Enugu Govt. approves multi-campus structure for ESUT

The Enugu State Government (ENSG) has approved a multi-campus structure for Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT).

A statement on Friday in Enugu by the Commissioner for Information, Mr Ogbuagu Anikwe, said the approval was in line with the visions of the founders of the institution.

Anikwe said that the institution which was hitherto situated in the state capital was originally meant to have specialist learning centres in each of the three senatorial zones.

The commissioner said Faculties of Science, Engineering and Technology at Agbani were in Enugu East Zone, while Education and Medical Sciences, Social Sciences and Agriculture would be relocated to Enugu West and Enugu North Zones.

“The Enugu State Executive Council has voted to return ESUT to its original multi-campus structure as established by the Chief Jim Nwobodo administration in 1980.

“Accordingly, three schools originally proposed for Enugu North Senatorial Zone – faculties of Medical Sciences, Agriculture, and Social Sciences – will be returned to the zone.

“The Faculty of Education will relocate to Enugu West and to be domiciled at the proposed University of Education, Ihe in Awgu Local Government Area,” he said.

He said that the Faculty of Medical Sciences would take advantage of the 400-bed specialist hospital currently under constructed at Igboano in Enugu North Zone.

He aid that the hospital when completed would serve as teaching facility for medical students.Council noted that relocating the school of medical sciences will decongest and take the pressure off the Enugu Park Lane Hospital which has been struggling for expansion since its conversion to a teaching hospital.

“N1.5billion was approved in the 2019 State Budget for construction of key facilities at Igboano Specialist Hospital/ESUT Teaching Hospital, including construction of access road and others.

“The government, however, voted to increase the budget to N2billion, following the decision on multi-campus structure for ESUT and additional facilities.

“These specialist centres will not only bring tertiary education closer to the grassroots but will facilitate rapid socio-economic development of all zones in Enugu State,” Anikwe said.

Enugu Govt approves further works on Int’l Conference Centre

…Okays extension works on road, court building projects

The administration of Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State, in furtherance of its concerted efforts to ensure the completion of the hitherto abandoned Enugu International Conference Centre, has approved the procurement and installation of external glass at the main auditorium of the edifice.

The administration also approved that the installation will be extended to the mini dome at the centre and extension works on the ongoing Court of Appeal building to accommodate the litigation/administrative office and basement.

Addressing newsmen on further outcome of the meeting of the State Executive Council (EXCO), the state Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Greg Nnaji, added that the council equally approved the extension of Ibagwa-Aka-Alor Agu road and additional erosion control works along Ngwo Adaba General Hospital, Ichi road and Ibagwa-Ichi-Unadu-Alor Agu road all in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area.

Engr. Nnaji disclosed that his ministry had installed street lights around the located areas of the International Conference Centre to provide security and “allow work at night”.

Also briefing newsmen, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Hon. Rita Mbah, stated that the council equally approved a free training of 200 youths in the state in film and creativity.

Hon. Mbah pointed out that the state government will sponsor the participation of the 200 youths in the training programme, which is being organized by the popular African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).

She added that the aim of the government’s involvement was to ensure that talented youths in creativity, who are interested in film industry, garner experience in the basic rudiments of movie making, acting, script writing and production, marketing, among others, to make them self-reliant.

The culture and tourism commissioner, who revealed that there is no qualification criteria required from any interested candidate to apply for the training, explained that the state government’s initiative is also targeted at giving the participants the opportunity to learn how to write proposals after training, to access part of the N500 million loan earmarked by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the creative industry.

According to her, “interested participants are requested to register without payment of fees with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism at the State Secretariat, Enugu”.

On the closure of Orie Emene Market and abattoir near the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu as well as the immediate removal of illegal structures encroaching on the land of the airport for the safety of air travelers and people residing around the airport, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Ogbuagu Anikwe, further explained that the council directed the Chairman of Enugu East Local Government Area to find a location site for the traders, immediately.

It would be recalled the EXCO in its earlier briefing yesterday, ordered the immediate closure of Orie Emene Market and abattoir near the airport and the immediate removal of all illegal structures encroaching on the land of the airport, following safety concerns raised by Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) on potential air hazards in and around the airport.

The council directed the Chairman of Enugu East Local Government Area to effect the immediate closure of the market”, explaining that “the State Executive Council had on 12th October, 2018 approved funds for relocation of the State Broadcast Mast on the approach of the runway to Okpatu Hill (Ugwu Rerenkwu) in Udi Local Government Area but the implementation of this project has been hampered by the disruptive activities of some youths in the community”.

It further directed the “immediate cessation of all hostilities against the project as any further interference will attract the full wrath of the Law given that the government has paid all the necessary compensation”.

According to the state government, “the Traditional Rulers of Okpatu communities and Town Union Leadership are hereby called upon to ensure full compliance with the above directives”.

Enugu State is truly in the hands of God. #amokelouis

I said it in another thread and I'm saying it here too, this is a stupid ass move by Ugwuanyi. Why not relocate all the facilities to Agbani

I know the excuse will be to use ESUT to spread development to all the senatorial zones but the argument to me is flawed. I believe if we think, we can find other ways to spread development. Resources is too scarce now for this jamboree. Nigeria is broke.

There are still much to do in Enugu state. Most parts of Enugu and Naukka urban still buy water, it's not a crime if Gburugburu becomes the first Governor in Nigeria to make sure that every street have pipe borne water at least once a week. I believe it's doable if we put our minds to it.

House rent in Enugu are quite expensive, do something about it. Even if it means flooding Enugu with Loma Linda type of low cost houses, the government should/can do it. Or see if there could be a PPP arrangement for low cost housing.

Look at our public school system, a sham with unqualified/unmotivated teachers. Our state government can fix it even if it means passing a law for a special salary structure for the teachers to attract top talent and also retraining. Education just like health can also attract the aid of international aid agencies.

A friend of mine heard Ugo Agballa talk about installing WiFi infrastructures in designated areas in the state during his 2007 guber campaign. I believe it's still possible, Ugwuanyi can roll out an IT plan for the state. He can make Enugu state the go to place for all the IT services for the SE/SS. With a good IT plan, he can attract top IT talents who are tired of staying in Lagos because of the traffic problems here.

Infact make I end here.

I apologise for my rant biko

Was watching NTA Newsline, and saw Hadi-Sirika at Ibadan airport to launch the refurbished terminal there.

He said something that reveals the plans these northern 'owners of Nigeria' have for Ndigbo and AIIA Enugu. He coldly said, '......what Kaduna is to the north...what also Enugu is to the east...as well as Benin to south-south....and to what Ibadan is to the west. We cannot grow bigger, and can't run faster than our brothers'!

You shouldn't read the above statement in isolation, but in the context of the plans to close and downgrade operations at AIIA, Enugu! I've said it before, that when GEJ and Senator Oduah upgraded operations at AIIA, Enugu; got Ethiopian to be serving the airport; and almost finished building the new int'l terminal at the airport.....Buhari and his relation Hadi-Sirika would have been watching proceedings with a rising wave of anger, jealousy and indignation! Hadi-Sirikas' statement above clearly shows their view as to who gets a working int'l airport and who doesn't is based on this stupid sharing formula (a formula that i don't even know how and why it became the norm) that everything should be shared equally between the north and the south. Apparently, some are forgetting that on the day of 'independence' in 1960, that there were two regions in the south as against one in the north....but slyly and while no one was paying attention, these northern muslim 'oeners of Nigeria' have made it such that things should now be shared equally between the north and the south.

Hadi-Sirikas' thinking (which got him and Buhari furious and determined to cut those 'nyamurees' to size) is that since Senator Oduah was giving Kano and Abuja new terminals in the north, she and GEJ had no business giving Lagos, Porth Harcourt as well as Enugu same, as this would now mean the north is being cheated when the tradition (please don't ask me how and when this tradition became accepted as the norm 'cos i don't know) is that things should be shared equally between the north and the south! This so called 'tradition' isn't even being fairly adhered to in many areas where you'll discover Alaigbo/Ndigbo are being shortchanged in politics, governance, spread of industries and spread of nation building institutions...but i digress!

From the time they took over, Buahri and Hadi-Sirika (his relative) must have been plotting how to bring AIIA Enugu down a peg or two! The fact Ndigbo would not have a int'l gateway in or out of their region and would then have to negotiate the deathtraps that are Nigerian roads (that are brimming with all manner of horrors and evil) just to travel in or out of their region...the fact they would have to endure all this doesn't register with Buhari and his relative; after all, the Igbos are a 'conquered people' and their region is 'second-class'.....ranked after those of the Yoruba and Fulani!

You do have to wonder how those naive, self-centred Igbos in that evil anti-Igbo party called APC, and those still shouting 'one Nigeria'...how they manage to sleep at night.

This is a bad news. RIP

Enugupikin

About 20 persons in Ukpabi Nimbo, an agrarian community in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State, were feared dead during an attack by Fulani herdsmen on Monday.

It was learnt that scores of armed cattle herdsmen, reportedly numbering more then a hundred, swooped on the sleepy community in the early hours of Monday.

Sources in the community disclosed that continuous gunshots were heard as the rampaging herdsmen moved to sack villagers from their homes.

Apart from guns, bows and arrows and machetes, or swords, were also wielded by the herdsmen, it was learnt.

Many of the villagers escaped to neighboring communities in the Uzo-Uwani area, but it was gathered that people in the nearby towns are also worried about possible attacks from the herdsmen.

A police source told our correspondent that, as of the time of filing this report, the corpses of five persons who died in the attack had been recovered.

Our correspondent learnt that the corpses, which were deposited at the morgue in Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, were recovered from farmlands.

There were indications that more bodies would be recovered, as our correspondent learnt that the combined team of police and military personnel, who moved into the community to repel the attack, were yet to get to all the affected areas.

Also, sources in the Ukpabi Nimbo community insist more than 20 of their kith and kin were killed before rescue could come.

However, Police Public Relations Officer, Enugu State Police Command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who informed to our correspondent that the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Nwodibo Ekechukwu, led other officers and men to the area, said the total number of casualties could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

Amaraizu, who spoke with our correspondent on the telephone, said the situation in the community had been brought under control.

“We moved in to ensure that the situation did not degenerate beyond control and right now everything is under control.

“The Commissioner of Police is there with other officers and men and the area is being secured.

“We can’t give the total number of casualties yet, it is when the operation is concluded that we will collate figures and give a definite number,” Amaraizu said.

Many members of the Ukpabi Nimbo community, who are mostly farmers, have their homes around their farmlands.

It was gathered that several houses, as well as farms and crops, were also destroyed by the herdsmen.

Our correspondent learnt that the herdsmen had previously fallen out with the villagers over their grazing activities in the community.

Sources in the community disclosed that the villagers had been resisting the use of their farmlands as grazing fields by the herdsmen.

It was equally learnt that the situation further degenerated after some herdsmen who operate in Ukpani Nimbo and other communities in the Uzo-Uwani area claimed that their cows were missing.

There were also claims by the herdsmen that some of their colleagues were killed in the area.

The villagers alleged that most of the herdsmen that were involved in Monday’s attack were ‘imported’ from Nasarawa State by other Fulani herdsmen who were already operating in Enugu.

Our correspondent gathered that, before the herdsmen struck on Monday, there was tension in Ukpabi Nimo and other communities in the Uzo-Uwani area over widespread rumour that about 500 herdsmen were mobilising to attack them.

It was learnt that the villagers, in anticipation of an imminent attack by herdsmen, had alerted the Enugu State Government, and the leadership of the Enugu State Police Command.

According to sources, the Chairman, Transition Committee, Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, Cornell Onwubuya, who was said to have informed the state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and the police commissioner, Nwodibo Ekechukwu, of the fears nursed by villagers, also met the leadership of the Hausa-Fulani community in the area over the matter.

Interestingly, the rumoured planned attack by 500 herdsmen was the subject of an emergency stakeholders meeting in the Uzo-Uwani area council during the weekend, hours before the herdsmen struck.

The meeting, reportedly, also deliberated on incessant herdsmen-related problems in the area, including several cases of murder, kidnappings and rape recorded in the recent past.

At the meeting, Onwubuya, chairman of the Uzo-Uwani local council, reportedly disclosed that some leaders of the Hausa-Fulani community had confirmed the rumoured plan by the herdsmen to launch an attack in the area.

Also at the said emergency stakeholders meeting, leaders of the Hausa-Fulani community in Enugu reportedly assured that they would take urgent steps to avert the planned attack.

However, the attack still went ahead, as planned, despite the prior notice given to the authorities, and the assurances given at the stakeholders meeting.

What is more important in the Enugu airport issue is whether the FG government's concerns are valid. Are these concerns in the interest of Ndi Enugu, Ndigbo and the entire Nigerians? The answer is YES.

Regardless of any perceived hidden agenda of the government, an abattoir in the vicinity of an airport would attract birds which are dangerous to aeroplanes. Telecommunication masts standing on the approach of airplanes are recipes for disaster. A market close to an airport is dangerous. An international airport without water supply is terribly dangerous. Buhari will win this argument anytime anywhere.

I was one of the excited Igbos that boarded Ethiopian airlines in the early days (9/2013) from Enugu to Addis Ababa, so the airport is very important to me as a person. But I also have to think safety.

I follow Enugu airport news almost daily. I don't believe Buhari has any intention to close the airport. His minister of aviation had respectfully visited Ugwuanyi several times in the past 18 months to find solutions to these salient issues. But unfortunately Ugwuanyi kept sleeping over the matter, until he suddenly woke up after the FG announced that it's set to close the airport. Ugwuanyi suddenly remembered he could use his executive order to shut down the market. That he could use the state's enforcement machinery to implement the enforcement of the removal of the masts.

It is instructive to hear the minister a few months ago confirm that five first class airlines including Delta, Emirates and British have indicated their interest to fly to Enugu. I can't believe a minister of a government that want to close an airport would reveal this. Air peace owned by our own Dr. Allen Onyema has since announced that Enugu will be their hub.

Again, the minister said they told Ugwuanyi that Ekulu river would solve the water problem, and appealed to him to facilitate piping the water while they (FG) extend the runway from the reclaimed lands, and fix the lights and others. What would it cost Enugu state government to pipe untreated water from Ekulu river to the airport? Considering the huge revenue a fully functional international airport would bring to Enugu state through different channels?

It is pathetic that ndibeanyi have gotten used to playing reactionary humiliating politics.

The airport has been in operation for decades! Is it just last year they discovered all these issues they're raising one after the other?

Hadi-Sirika was forced to visit the airport and the governor last year when members of the national assembly from the south-east complained about the poor state of infrastructure at the airport. What has been done since then to upgrade said infrastructure and operations at the airport? Why can't they do with Enugu and Owerri airports the same thing they did with Abuja and Kaduna airports about two years ago when they upgraded infrastructure at Kaduna airport and then transferred int'l flights there while they closed down Abuja airport and faced its runway squarely? Is it because Enugu is a 'second-class city' belonging to a 'second-class and conquered people' and hence doesn't deserve the same attention airports in Fulani and Yoruba regions get?

Of course i've always maintained part of the blame goes to our ineffectual elite that don't know how to fight our corner, hence giving Igbo haters like Buhari and his relative Hadi-Sirika the excuse to carry out their dark agenda against us! If Hadi-Sirika raised the issue of abattoir and mast last year, why is it that it's when talk of shutting down the airport and downgrading its status to a local airport surfaced that Ugwuanyi finaly did what he should have done days after that first visit last year? They now came up with a useless excuse of the youths preventing a whole state and federal gov't from relocating the mast....can you imagine? This is the same federal gov't that doesn't waste time in sending down battalions of soldiers to mow down protesting Igbo youth if they as much as say Biaf.... or refere......! Meanwhile the military that are equally impeding operations at the airport haven't moved same way they expect the market, abattoir and mast to move!

What do you have to say about Hadi-Sirikas statement that Ibadan is to the west.....as Benin is to the south-south...as Kaduna is to the north....and as Enugu is to the east...thereby downgrading AIIA Enugu to a second-tier airport? Forgetting that it's the only int'l gateway the Igbos/south-east have unlike the Yoruba that have Lagos and the Fulani that have Kano, Abuja and Kaduna. This wouldn't have been an issue if they didn't wickedly remove Igbo stake in Port Harcourt after the uncivil war, and we still saw the city the same way the Yoruba see Lagos and the Fulani see Kano, Kaduna and Abuja!

How about the new terminal at Enugu that work on it stopped as soon as Buhari took over, while those in Port Harcourt, Lagos, Kano and Abuja have either been finished and opened or are about to be? What excuse do you have to give on this one to defend your friend Buhari and his evil party?

Watching the video i attached, you will see where mention was made of the fact that the existing terminal is a glorified bus-stop and a disgrace to airports the world over! Facilities have been rundown and the entire airport has just been neglected....this is four years now into the administration of Buhari and APC! You posit that Igbos complaining about Buhari and APCs evil agenda against Ndigbo have no reason to....that we're crying wolf, and hence we should STFU! Basically beating a child and not expecting it to cry!

You see what i mean when i say Nigeria is holding Igbos down, while it unfairly and disproportionately favours other peoples and regions? Because we're in 'one Nigeria' we cannot now have a standard int'l gateway! Ethnic groups in countries like Rwanda, Ghana, Botswana and even the UAE are no better than Ndigbo....the only difference between them and us is that they're not trapped in a country with groups that hate their guts and who effectively enact policies to hold them down and stifle their progress!

AyakaDunukofia:

What is more important in the Enugu airport issue is whether the FG government's concerns are valid. Are these concerns in the interests of Ndi Enugu, Ndigbo and the entire Nigerians? The answer is YES.

Regardless of any perceived hidden agenda of the government, an abattoir in the vicinity of an airport would attracts birds which are dangerous to aeroplanes.

Thank you. I hate the fact that we cry "marginalised" every time.

Same here.
And funnily enough, you see some foolish Igbo boys on Nairaland saying that the Igbos don't need the government to succeed.
I find that comment very absurd.

Damn, this dude is so sound!

l read the post from the said Minister on the security concerns at the airport. Frankly, that wasn’t the first time such concerns have been tabled before the State Government, but the man at the helm decided not to be proactive. It’s disheartening to a discerning mind that the governor had to wait until this time to issue an executive order for a relocation of an ‘ordinary’ market and abattoir in a shared space with an acclaimed international airport......haba!

The SE could have had a fair hearing in the court of public opinion if the mundane governor had done all these before the said pronouncement by the minister. He could have come out and boastfully say: it’s the FG delay of not expanding the runway and upgrading facilities that is putting the airport under security concerns.

Over 20,000 youths jostle for Enugu State cleaning job – Coordinator

No fewer than 20,000 youths in Enugu State have applied for the state Cleaning and Beautification job, an initiative of Gov. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, says an official.

The Coordinator of Enugu Clean Team Project (ECTP), Rev. Fr. Michael Ogbu, told newsmen in Enugu on Friday that the application was for the additional 1,000 workers approved by Gov. Ugwuanyi to be taken in the project.

“After our announcement for recruitment of additional 1,000 staff, more than 20,000 persons applied with at least a school certificate.

“I can recall vividly that when we started the Enugu Clean Team Project, young people were reluctant to come for employment for the initial 1,000 workers in the project but now the story has changed,’’ Ogbu said.

ccording to him, apart from the procurement of new equipment to cover Enugu, Nsukka, 9th Mile Corner, Awgu and Oji River axis of the state, the employment of additional 1,000 staff will enhance the operational capacity of the project.

Ogbu also re-affirmed his commitment to meet the mandate given to him by the governor to make Enugu the cleanest city in Nigeria, a dream come true.

“ECTP management has put machinery in motion to ensure that Enugu State and Enugu city becomes the cleanest state and city in the country within the shortest possible time.

“I believe the governor and the state executive council are impressed with our performance and that is why we were graciously granted request to increase our staff strength with an additional 1,000 staff,’’ he said.

He however, appealed to motorists to drive slowly in the early hours of the day to avoid hitting staff who were on duty, adding that residents should desist from indiscriminate disposal of refuse.

Ogbu explained that part of the reasons why the governor established the organization was to provide employment to young people and discourage them from going into crime in addition to keeping the environment clean.

The ECTP Project covers road and street sweeping, drainage clearing and de-silting, green verge areas and trees trimming as well as maintenance of ornamental flowers and parks within the state.

This is a good development. With the cleaning of the cities and towns more trees, roundabouts need to be beautified...Roads Like Ogui road, Abakiliki road need trees in the meridian. Why can't the first picture (Ogui road, Enugu) be turned to the second (Rangers Avenue axis, Enugu)? This team should think out of the box to make the areas under their mandate fantastic, with creative designs.

They should also work on Park for recreation. I don't think there is any functional park at the moment. They can get a corporate organization to set out funds as part of their corporate community governance to maintain the parks. Zenith bank, Peace airline, Peace motors are some examples.

ENUGU: Tackling insecurity, providing infrastructure top agenda:

The first two administrations in Enugu State since 1999 were ran by Dr Chimaroke Nnamani and Mr. Sullivan Chime who had different styles of governance. Whereas the Nnamani administration performed more of human capital development with infrastructural provision, the Chime administration is being hailed today for its high performance in capital projects.

The serving Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi administration in the past four years combined both human resources and infrastructural development. However, going by the benchmark of governance in our clime, where infrastructural development is regarded more highly than human empowerment, the Ugwuanyi administration is being expected in the next four years to step up its capital projects execution.

I am happy the Enugu state government is taking NOTE of positive criticism. Ebony state and its capital Abakiliki should be a case study for the Enugu Ugwuanyi to have succeeded.

Fulani people are playing a high-stakes game.Don't be fooled by their trademark intrigues. Nobody said don't close and "fix" AIIA if they are sincere. We are even praying for them to do it as they have unnecessarily neglected every infrastructure in the SE region. We want them to set a runway reconstruction timetable period as they did for Abuja airport and other airports in Nigeria. They should also name a nearby airport closer to the Enugu destination as they insisted on Kaduna airport rather than Lagos airport to divert Abuja bound flights when they closed Abuja for repairs.

In the same spirit and manner which Hadi Sirika had persistently argued for the convenience of passengers to be taken into account when Kaduna airport was fixed before Abuja airport traffic was diverted there to allow for fixing of Abuja airport. The Federal Government should demonstrate sincerity and prepare Sam Mbakwe Intl airport Owerri or Asaba Intl airport to take diverted traffic from Enugu before the so called closure for "repairs'

Everyone knows the Fulani agenda aginst the Igbo in particular and Nigeria in general. So folks should not be surprised at their intrigues to close down Akanu Ibiam Intl. airport so that they can divert the traffic to Kano, Kaduna or Lagos.

Hear Hadi Sirika below making the case for diversion to Kaduna airport and NOT Lagos when Abuja airport is closed for repairs
