Ndi Enugu, I am not saying Anambra is paradise but we are spoilt with credible candidates for governorship across all parties. Now, for Enugu who had very few qualified candidates you have to stay on your governor to do his job....Your one party state is Also counterproductive.

No they think everything starts and ends in pdp.

Anambra practices multi party politics that's why you see there Apga, pdp, ypp and the rest.

The issue of Rochas is different! The guy was voted in initially on the platform of APGA, but no sooner had he been sworn in, he shamelessly ported over to APC (a coven of witches with a anti-Igbo agenda and headed by a crass, vindictive, islamofascist bigot)! We can all see today how Buhari regards Ndigbo and how the south-east has been relegated to a second-tier region...to wait in line until the core muslim north and south-west have first been appeased with either funds, projects or appointments! Rochas has seen all this yet he still goes ahead to assault our sensibilities with stupid talk of how Ndigbo don't know how to play politics just because we refused to support that nepotistic bigot in Aso Rock!

It's clear as daylight that Rochas has no qualms throwing Ndigbo under the bus just to ingratiate himself with his Fulani masters in the hope they will deem him anti-Igbo enough to entrust with the presidency....that's whenever they agree to let go of it!

If Rochas had remained in APGA, or crossed over to any other party but APC, he would have been judged less harshly and been regarded same way as the Ugwuanyi and Ikpeazu you compared him to.

Should a state just become multi party just for the heck of it? Anambra have just been lucky with good leaders under the APGA platform and the developments we have seen is never because it's a multi party state. As much as i think Enugu needs to up their ante, i don't think being multi party will bring any form of positives.

I think there's a certain charm in leaving those valleys and hills surrounding Enugu undeveloped.

Besides, our estate developers haven't developed the level of taste and refinement required to recreate those tranquil suburban settings depicted in the pic you posted. If you open up these virgin lands to our local real-estate developers they will just recreate the type of estates you see springing up in cities like Onitsha, Owerri and Enugu: no sidewalks; little or no trees adoring the streets; no open spaces with well-tended lawns, shrubs, flowers and trees that are designated for parks; no central sewage disposal system; etc.

The Centenary City in Enugu has bucked the trend a bit, but it's taking forever to finish!

A drive around part of Enugu.

Things i noticed which anyone close to the Governor or Commissioner concerned could help bring to their notice:

1- Most of the traffic lights are dead.

2- Some of the street lights are leaning over like the Tower of Pisa and are in imminent danger of total collapse.

3- Some areas (mostly in the busy commercial areas) are having a bit of overgrown vegetation which needs trimming, and the roads swept of
that red Enugu dust/sediment.

4- The streets in the busy commercial areas have too many signs mounted willy-nilly. There should be some kind of organisation and to
the mounting of signs.

5- The face of Governor Ugwuanyi is EVERWHERE! It's almost like a personality cult, and doesn't speak well of him as people may think he has
an ego problem and messianic complex.

Besides the few hiccups listed above, everything else looks ok! And the gov't has tried in maintaining Enugu environment the way it has done thus far!

GBAM! Governor Ugwuanyi has indeed tried to at least maintain Enugu as a very decent city in Nigeria. Yes, he does have people sweeping the streets, although he could do A LOT better. But at least he tries to sweep the streets unlike some Governors in SE that don't even know there is a thing called street sweeping and beautification of the environment with trees and flowers.

However, most importantly, if other state governments have been known to build airports (runways, terminal buildings equipment etc), i think Governor Ugwuanyi should embark on a second runway project for the Akanu Ibiam International airport as a LEGACY PROJECT to be completed within his second term in office. It is clear that this Fulani Federal Government will NEVER do anything positive for Igboland talk-more of upgrading the airport.

A second runway will finally put to rest the continued plot by some northern Jihadists to close down AIIA, Enugu under the guise of perpetually "fixing" the runway. Once the second runway is completed by the Enugu State government, then the FAAN can start using it and perpetually begin their snail speed "fixing" of the present runway, relocation of the aviation fuel dump & classrooms away from the Main runway and completion of the taxiways at the airport.

There is enough land in the northern end of the airport for a 3KM by 60 Meters second runway.

Five issues had been identified that would affect the successful expansion of the airport and the future second runway proposed for the airport. These issues are labeled A,B,C,D and E in the satellite image below.

A: Illegal and now abandoned classroom built by Nigerian Airforce Enugu very close to the main runway

B: The settlement on the northeast aspect of the airport which will prevent a second runway project if it's not relocated.

C: The suddenly growing construction of new settlement on the northwest aspect of the airport, which will frustrate a second runway

D: A Duplex recently built by a powerful ex-military man well within the safety distance upon completion of Taxiway to Runway 08

E: Eke-Orie Market Emene believed to have abattoir that can cause bird strike for incoming plane.

The Nigerian government always seems negligent in its duties. They make basic tasks seem complex. But ultimately, it's down to the populace. It's obvious, the government isn't do those little things, like maintaining street corners, building pavements, installing proper drainage systems, so they can pocket the money. But if the people don't say or do anything, instead choosing to stand and cheer, whenever a governor builds a road (as if they deserve praise for doing their job) , then that's what they're going to get.

The governors should fear the populace, since they're there to serve them. Unlike what pertains in Nigeria, where the governors, the moment they're sworn in, are treated like fiefdoms.

CJ', what you suggest is a brilliant idea but you forget AIIA Enugu is presently 'owned' by the federal gov't and hence under the control of Buhari and his relative Hadi-Sirika! Now do you think they will sit by and allow such a good idea see the light of day? I don't think so, and i have good reason for saying so!

Presently we can see the way they're playing us like football and taking us for fools! Every now and again when Igbo elite and politicians grumble about the bad situation of AIIA, they pretend they're swinging into action by either sending down the minister of aviation or head of FAAN to come visit Ugwuanyi and the airport and they start to reel out a list of problems that's preventing them from fixing the runway, maintaining the old terminal or recommencing works on the new terminal.....it's never their fault but always someone else! Now when Ugwuanyi swings into action and resolves the issues they raised, there's no followup from them...they don't swing into action and start work. Everything dies down and is forgotten until we start complaining again like Osita Chidoka has just done (scroll up to see what he said on the issue)! Recall there wasn't this much drama and blowing of turenchi when they woke up one morning and announced they will fix Abuja airport runway....and as a consequence, also fix up the airport in Kaduna nicely to be able to take diverted int'l flights! They just gave a date, found the money and got on with it!

Another pointer to the fact they won't allow Ugwuanyi touch 'their airport' can be seen in how they listed a number of int'l airports for concessioning and left out AIIA! They listed the ones in Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja and Kano, while saying others (second tier airports i guess) will be listed for a second phase! This is a ploy to hold down AIIA with their shi't administering and devil-may-care attitude (hopefully reducing its status to little more than a local airstrip) while they use 'federal might' to attract the best concessionaires with deep pockets to handle their own dear airports, pump in money, and hopefully bring them up to world standard! After they've had this head-start, they will now release a AIIA (that at this point would probably be on life-support) and sit by smugly to see just what those 'nyamurees' will do to bring it back to life!

Finally, i think we're expecting more than Ugwuanyi can give if we expect him to be proactive and visionary enough to build a second runway for AIIA Enugu (whether with state funds or PPP)! I just don't see him being able to pull it off! Now if it had been someone like a Umahi for instance, then i'd say maybe there's a chance of it happening! smiley

Closure of Enugu International Airport Imminent

It has been confirmed from reliable sources that the Fulani plot to permanently close down the Akanu Ibiam International airport Enugu under pretext of "fixing" one thing or another has advanced into implementation stage. Recall that the same people less than two months ago demanded the removal of a radio mast and closure of Orie Emene market as condition for them not to close the airport. These conditions were swiftly implemented by the state government.Which they public acknowledged the state government and said the closure of the airport was no longer on their "to do" list. But, those commendable actions by the state government turned out they merely delayed but did not persuade the Fulani regime we are suffering under from relenting in their effort to find a reason to permanently shut down the only International airport in Southeast region of the country.

Every appeal to temporarily upgrade Sam Mbakwe International Airport Owerri to take diverted Enugu international flights for the convenience of the southeast passengers have fallen on deaf ears.Recall that when Abuja airport was closed for about 3 months two years ago, Kaduna airport was temporarily upgraded to take Abuja diverted flight for the convenience of the passengers.

Today, Hadi Sirika sent his hit squad to Government House Enugu to inform the Governor about their decision to close down the airport and again rob the southeast region of any international airport within the zone. We appeal to our good citizens and leaders of thought to remain vigilant as we observe their plot and strategy to economical strangle southeast zone.

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has finally shut down Akanu Indian International Airport Enugu.

The Airport was shut down 2300 hours (12 midnight Friday).
However, a concession was given to Ethiopian Airline flight to land on Saturday because it was a pre-scheduled international flight before the decision to shut the airport.

The airline had argued that the cost of conveying passengers from Port-Harcourt International airport to Enugu by road and providing accommodation for them would be too heavy on the airline, and therefore should be allowed to drop the passengers at Enugu since the flight was scheduled before announcement to shut down the airport.

FAAN had on Saturday August 17 announced it’s intention to close down the runway of Akanu Ibiam International Airport on Saturday, August 24, to effect maintenance that will enhance safety operations.

Henrietta Yakubu, the General Manager, Corporate Affairs of FAAN, dropped the hint in a press statement in Lagos.

“This move is aimed at resolving the existing Safety/Security concerns to flight operations,” she said.

She stressed that the date of the re opening will be communicated in due course.

Despite a passionate letter written to President Muhammad Bihari by governors of South East states to weight in and pressure FAAN to postpone the shutdown pending when alternative arrangements were made, the Federal Government went ahead with the shutdown.

Upon Closure of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, the FAAN pledged that they will divert flights to Port Harcourt and pronounce a firm re-opening date for the airport.

After more than 2 weeks of closure, the FAAN has denied Ethiopian Airline access to land Enugu passengers in Port Harcourt International airport. Instead they told the airline to inform such passengers that they will be flown to Kano, Abuja or Lagos!

To expose their true intention of closing down the airport was merely to kill it, they have neither started any repairs at the airport nor stated how long the so called "Repairs" will take.

This is just for those who gullibly believed that the FG closed down Enugu International airport for "Repairs" and that convenience of the passengers would be taken into consideration by flying them to Port Harcourt or Asaba International airports.

It should be very clear by now to all doubting Thomases that the intention was to close down the airport indefinitely and they won't bother themselves to do any so called repairs they claimed as excuse to close the only international airport in the Southeast region.

The Enugu state Governor and indeed the Southeast Governors should impress upon the Federal Minister for Aviation,NCAA and FAAN to make a true pronouncement of the firm date for reopening of the airport.

Also the Ethiopian airlines should not be forced to transfer all their Enugu passengers to Kano, Abuja or Lagos flights by denying them landing access to Port Harcourt International airport. Enugu bound passengers should be flown to Port Harcourt Intl. as stated before closure of the Akanu Ibiam International airport. Or flown to Asaba International airport which is the nearest international airport to Enugu and has a brand new 3.5 KM runway, taxiway and modern facilities of international standards as recently certified by NCAA , FAAN and even Hadi Sirika himself.

December Reopening Not Realistic – Source
There are strong indications that the December 2019 date for reopening of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu State, may not be feasible.

Investigations by The Guardian revealed that more than two weeks after the airport was shut to traffic to make way for the repair of its runway and general rehabilitation, work is yet to commence even as there is no budget to that effect.

It was further gathered that even the contracts outlined were yet to be awarded as a result of the Federal Government’s inability to decide, which construction firm (between Julius Berger and PW) was suited for the job, scope of work to be embarked upon, and the road repairs in the zone aimed at cushioning the effect of the closure. The airport was closed on August 24.

The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sarika, told reporters after his meeting with southeast governors, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and other stakeholders in Enugu, last weekend, that the airport’s runway would be rehabilitated and extended, damaged tarmac rebuilt, and new landing equipment with night landing facility installed, but failed to disclose the contract sum and who among the contractors had been awarded the job.

Southeast governors on their own did not hide their preference for Julius Berger following alleged poor job earlier done on the runway by PW.

A competent source in the Aviation Ministry told The Guardian that funding may delay the work as about N6.5b is needed to rehabilitate and expand the runway alone, while another N1.5b will be required to fix the runway lights and bring it to international standard.

The source added that while the runway would be expanded from three kilometres to about 3.6 kilometres, the fencing of the airport to enhance security may take an additional N100m.

The source further disclosed that the delay in the takeoff of works was compounded by the level of disrepair on alternative routes suggested by the Federal Government for air users in the zone to get to Owerri, Asaba and Port Harcourt airports.

The alternative routes in the South East, which, would serve as palliatives to the airport’s closure are completely impassable, without immediate intervention, they would not serve that purpose.

Already governors of the zone have written to the Ministry of Works and Housing alerting on the dangers posed by the alternative routes and called for immediate responses.

The letter written on September 5, was signed by the Director-General of Southeast Governors’ Forum, Prof. Simeon Ortuanya.

It had highlighted the current state of the roads, frustrations that users face and called for emergency repairs.

Meanwhile, governors of the zone have inaugurated a Project Supervision and Implementation Committee to oversee the palliative measures suggested by the federal government. The committee led by Chris Okoye, Commissioners of works from the five states; Prof. Fred Eze representing Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and Archbishop Fred Ede, representing the clergy.

When asked to explain why there's still no sign of commencement of works at AIIA, the new explanation Hadi-Sirika has dreamt up now is that heavy machinery don't need to be rolled out as soon as the airport is closed...that rehabilitation of the airport has commenced in other ways! You couldn't make it up!

I remember when they were doing the runway at Abuja airport, they transferred int'l flights to the hurriedly refurbished Kaduna airport. Why can't they divert int'l flights meant for AIIA Enugu to either Asaba or Owerri airports? They also gave a firm timeframe, announced the contractor for the job, and gave the cost of the job to be done. None of this has been done in the case of AIIA Enugu!

I just laugh at gullible 'one Nigeria' Igbos who think the Fulani see them as equals in a fair and just Nigeria!

God bless you Sir!

I actually laugh at those clamouring for the airport to be closed down because they believe those Fulanis will truly build anything there.

Fulanis are ONLY interested in upgrading Kano, Kaduna, Katsina and Sokoto airports.

If they had their way, they would even close Lagos and divert the traffic to Kaduna. They have tried in futility to make Kaduna a functional international airport and failed. That is why they are bent on destroying Enugu because Hadi Sirika says Kaduna is to the north what Enugu is to the East.So he didn't understand why Enugu should have a functional international airport, if Kaduna couldn't. While he conveniently forgot that they have Kano International in their zone, while the southeast zone doesn't even have any at all! Kano international airport is the reason why Kaduna cannot have a viable international airport operation.
