Biggysmalls919: why should the coming of walmart be problem to this country? If the ibos or igbos don‘t want a walmart store and prefer to be selling those fake products in the south east, let ohaneze come out and speak for them. As for the rest of us walmart is highly welcome because we need jobs and mega modern stores to beautify our cities!listen 2 urself, u peasant! So what u call jobs is pushin troleys, scrubing floor and washing toilets rather than owning ur business? I put it 2 u dat u r a lowlife peasant wit a slave mentality! 2 Likes |

OmanIman: 1st it was Shoprite, then Spar and anothr Shoprite in abj!Nw Walmart?Haba dis shld stop!Govt shld encourage local enterpreneurs.Makes me feel all we'll ever do in dis country is jus to "Consume" till thy kingdom come!V sad!Enof of dis "Super Stores"! They are just retailing and not manufacturing anything so how are they a threat. I rather think the competition is welcome as they will up the ante in terms of product and service delivery as they purchase locally made goods and products. |

londoner: Walmart will cater for the emerging middle classes.. Are you not aware of how the high street shops are closing down daily across UK?? Large Tesco and Asda stores are sqeezing them out. In my area, lots of local shops have been replaced by Ladbrokes, W. Hill and payday loan shops. To underestimate the future effects of the foreign big shops will be a typical Nigerian myopia. |

Walmart tenure is limited, people are rushing there now just because its their 1st time of this kind of shopping experience, soon they will all realize that you can get cheaper and better quality products inside open markets. an electric cooker i bought costly in Shoprite takes 3hrs to boil hot water!! SMH!!! |

MacLovington: . I am aware of that, but you still have neighbourhood shops. I am not saying there will be no losses. You will also notice that shops like Tesco etc, also source from small businesses. All these superstore do not just stock own brand. Like I said we still have markets in the UK, I have not heard of markets closing down. There are many things you just can not get from Tesco or Sainsbury. I know that when I shop for food for example, I will buy some things from larger stores and some from local stores. Even sometimes, when an item ca be purchased from a larger chain, they rarely compete on price. The way Igbo businessmen and women are, they will adapt in a way that is to their advantage. Even if Walmart decides to stock local ingredients they will be supplied by local producers will they not? |

There are changes everywhere in the world; communities are moving from jungle description to civilization and Nigeria cannot be different. I remember advising a staff of mine who was busy buying 'Danfo' in Lagos to start thinking ahead of acquiring 'Danfo' and key in into the innovation (buying of stateoftheart luxury buses to replace Danfos and Molues) the Lagos State was introducing. To my greatest surprise, he told me that such dream will NEVER work. This happened around 1998, but today Fashola has proved him wrong. Sometime ago, I advised a cybercafe operator in Abuja to look beyond running a cybercafe because I foresaw a situation whereby everybody will have very cheap access to internet and cybercafe will be absolutely unpopular. That time has come. Each time I entered NIPOST I shake my head. If the management was proactive, they would have seen from afar that internet was going to sweep them into history and would have planned to be relevant today. Proactive: that is the solution. There is always a way out of any murky situation. I will advise the Igbos traders to form a formidable association, employ a futurist who can counsel them appositely. I am of the opinion that they can still find their niche in Nigerian market if they are willing to 'wake up' to reality and of course, make relevance in other countries. Days of deceits are over. Let's jettison jungle mentality. |

I have lived in many small towns in the united states and have witnessed first hand what big stores like walmart and HEB does to small locally owned retail business. Its a job killer. |
