Subsidy report: Indicted persons face trial next week - AGF •As Jonathan, N/Assembly, judiciary brainstorm on new strategy on corruption

WORRIED by the seeming lack of results in the ongoing effort by his administration to tackle corruption in the country, President Goodluck Jonathan, on Monday, summoned an extra-ordinary meeting of the heads of the three branches of government to explore ways of evolving a more effective strategy to deal with the menace.

This is just as the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Mr Mohammed Adoke, disclosed that the prosecution of the indicted persons on the oil subsidy would begin as from next week.

At the meeting, which took place in his office in the Presidential Villa, Abuja were Vice-President Namadi Sambo; Senate President David Mark; Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal; Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Dahiru Musdapher; acting President of Court of Appeal, Honourable Dalhatu Adamu; Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba; House Leader, Mulikat Akande; Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator Anyim Pius Anyim; Head of Service, Alhaji Ibrahim Sali; Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi; chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr Ibrahim Lamorde; his counterpart in the Independent Corrupt Practices and Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Mr Ekpo Nta and the AGF, Mr Mohammed Adoke.

The chief judges of Anambra, Kaduna, Lagos states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), chairman of the Senate Committee on Drugs, Narcotics and Financial Crimes, Senator Victor Lar and his counterpart from the House of Representatives, Honourable Adams Jagaba, were also in attendance.

Briefing State House correspondents at the end of the meeting, Senator Ndoma-Egba noted that the president called the meeting because of his concern over the rate of corruption in the country and the need to deal with it decisively.

He said the president wanted the three branches of government to work together in the fight against corruption in the country.

According to him, "the president's initiative is unprecedented, getting the three arms of government to sit in one meeting and the subject matter of discussion was the issue of corruption and how the three arms could work together to stem the worrying incident of corruption in our polity.

"We discussed at length, got insight from each arm of government and we will meet again to review the issues that arose from today's meeting and on the way forward."

The Senate Leader added that "the president is obviously worried about the incidence of corruption and from discussions we had, all the arms of government are indeed worried about the incidence of corruption in our society."

He revealed that the meeting looked at the challenges the country was facing in the fight against corruption, some of which he observed, were constitutional.

"The National Assembly will take another look at these issues. The judiciary also gave its own insight into the constraints. All of these will be addressed. The issue of funding of the agencies, especially the EFCC and the ICPC was also discussed. All of these issues will be addressed," Senator Ndoma-Egba stressed.

Also speaking, the AGF said that government was coming out with a new strategy in the fight against corruption.

"Yes, we are coming out with a national strategy on the fight against corruption and that strategy will involve the three arms of government," he declared.

On the controversial report of the House of Representatives ad hoc committee which probed oil subsidy regime, Adoke pointed out that the issue was not discussed at the meeting but gave assurances that as soon as the EFCC finished its assignment, it would be followed by prosecutions of culpable individuals, saying "you will begin to see prosecution, probably in the next one week. We will begin to prosecute because the EFCC has gone very far."

While assuring that the issue would not be swept under the carpet, he explained that government wanted the anti-graft commission to do a thorough investigation of the matter.

"So, Nigerians should be rest assured that this is not an issue that will be swept under the carpet. We have gone this far because we want a proper and painstaking investigation done so that when we charge people to court there will be no lapses or loopholes for lawyers to explore," he said.
