House owners and residents at Archibong Ika Str( In-betwen Crutech n Unical), off Eneobong Ave have lived there in peace until the Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. James Epoke ordered hoodlums to destroy houses in that area on 14 n 15th of july.

The men who destroyed the houses according to residents and eye witnesses were numbered about 50, comprising of some security men in UNICAL & some area boys.
When the Clan head of Efut Abasi Uwanse was question abt d unprecedented event, he said that there was a disagreement btw UNICAL autorithies and the Efuts kingdom which is the landlord comunity. The disagreement was that the Efut have tresspased into the land the av already sold to UNICAL. Which the Efut nation denied that allegation and the case was taken to court and a final resolution was made stating the boundary betwen Unical & Efuts. And this happen during the tenure of Prof. Bassey Asuquo as UNICAL Vice Chancellor.

But to the greatest suprise of the residents, on the 14th of july at about 7pm some men numbering about 50 came into the area n start demolishing houses and shooting of gun sparodically into the air without any notice and also the next day at about 7am the was gun shots in the area n massive destruction of people's houses. Acording to the people whose house have been destroyed; 'the men came into our house and first thing collect our cell phone and then start breaking our houses until the Chiefs and youths of the community gathered and approached them and they said that the order is from the VC of UNICAL, Prof. James Epoke.

It can be recalled that on August last year this same VC Prof. Epoke gave a deadline for skul fees payment to students & that whoever do not pay b4 dat the stipulated deadline will no longer be a student in UNICAL. Irrespective of the student's academic level. This caused a serious riot in skul that led to massive destruction of properties in the skul. The VC was quoted as saying 'Education is not for the poor'. But to the greatest surprise of students, the VC two weeks after his election bought a very expensive car for her daughters birthday celebration. And his teenage son is now cruising with assorted models of jeeps.
