Governor Gabriel Suswan, Benue State and Governor Martin Elechi, Ebonyi State

JOHNSON BABAJIDE was at the scene of the perennial border dispute between two communities in Benue and Ebonyi states. He reports that implementation of the National Boundary Commission’s (NBC’s) reports on the disputed border between communities in the states remains only solution to their incessant crisis that often claims lives.

THE perennial crisis rocking the people of Agila in Ado Local Government Area of Benue State and their neighbours at Ngbo community of Ohukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State may take a long time before it is resolved.
The two bordered communities, according to investigation by Sunday Tribune, have been at loggerheads for almost a century, even as sources said that the crisis was daily assuming a dangerous dimension.

Following the occasional conflict between the bordered communities, the National Boundary Commission (NBC) in 2000, it was gathered, dabbled into the crisis, but the commission’s attempt at resolving the boundary dispute was allegedly disrupted by Ngbo people in Eboyin State.

In a report entitled, “An Update Report on Benue/Ebonyi Interstate Boundary” presented at the bilateral interstate boundary meeting at Abakaliki in Ebonyi State in March 2008, it was revealed that many Ezza, Izzi, Ngbo and Ishieke people of Ebonyi came to the disputed land of Agila in Benue State because of its agricultural potentials, thus making the part of Benue State losing huge farmland to Ebonyi State.

The report noted that in an attempt to find a solution to the boundary dispute, the colonial administration set the boundary and adjusted it several times, especially in the 1930s to favour the Ibos, alleging that while the other border communities respected the boundary, Agila/Ngbo people had been indifferent to it.

In the last two months, fighting had erupted in the disputed areas twice. In May this year, it was gathered that the Ngbo people invaded the Agila community and hoisted a flag of the defunct Biafra on the land as a part of celebration of the burial of the Biafran warlord, Late Odumegwu Ojukwu.

Okpe Attah, who narrated the constant invasion, noted that the invaders destroyed farm crops belonging to the Agila people, alleging that heavily armed militia from Ngbo who had camped overnight at St Peters Catholic Church in Agila launched a surprise attack early in the morning which left many inhabitants of the town injured.

According to Okpe Attah, the distance between Ngbo community and Agila in Benue State is about eight kilometers, noting that since both communities are predominant farmers, “the Ngbo people always trespass on our land with ease and most cases lay claim to the land belonging to us here.”

Similar incursion by the Ngbo community was said to have been the cause of the renewed hostility last Monday, which according to Attah, left two people dead, adding that the perennial land dispute between the neighbouring communities had defiled resolution.

It was gathered that crisis erupted at the early hours of last Tuesday when the Ngbo community allegedly deployed mercenaries in Agila with the aim of fomenting trouble.

According to Attah, farmers of Ai-Nedu community had gone to carry out their routine farming activities on the day only to run into an ambush mounted by the invaders who matched through Ogilolo community dressed in military camouflage and armed with sophisticated weapons.

“The farmers fled on sighting the men but the mercenaries caught up with one Oche Adayi, a father of four and beheaded him,” adding that the deceased was in the farm with other two people who raised the alarm after the Ngbo people caught up with Adayi and macheted him to death. It was also alleged that the mercenaries sacked other communities shooting sporadically which forced many residents into the bush.

The district head of Agila, Chief Otokpa Egwutube, who traced the crisis to 1920, said that the level of devastation his people had suffered over the period of the repeated attacks was unimaginable.

According to him, ‘the constant attacks have eaten deep into the soico-economic and cultural lives of my people, as I am talking to you now, many of my people cannot live as normal human beings because it has affected them in so many ways. We live in constant fear of the invaders, because nobody knows when it is his/her next invasion.

“As it is now, our children cannot go to school, neither could our women go to the market nor farmers engage in their farming activities because of the constant fear that there could be an attack.”

The traditional ruler called on both the governments of states concerned as well as the Federal Government to promptly intervene in the crisis by completing the re-beaconing started by the National Boundary Commission, stating that security operatives should also be deployed in the disputed area to protect the NBC men as well as the inhabitants there.

He blamed the crisis on the Ngbo community, who he said worked against peaceful settlement of the crisis.

The Benue State Special Adviser on Security, Mr. Basil Kwembe, who led the state delegates to the affected area, appealed for calm among the people of the warring communities and assured that the state government would surely take appropriate steps to bring lasting solution to the crisis.

The caretaker chairman of Ado Local Government Area, Hon. Bernard Ochepa, expressed worry over the repeated attacks on the Agila people.

He disclosed that the latest attack claimed one life, while many houses were burnt, noting that the socio-economic and cultural activities of the people of the area had been grinded to a halt.

Ochepa urged the Benue State government to liaise with the Federal Government to effect the recommendations of the report presented at Ebonyi in 2008, saying parts of the recommendations include; the need for demarcation and documentations in line with the boundary adjustment legal notice of 1954 as well as the need for the authority concerned to have a permanent post at the border areas.

Among the recommendations are; the need to develop the border corridor by providing link roads and other social amenities at the border communities, encouraging trans-border cooperation, especially at Agila/Ngbo end, giving equal treatment to the people living at the border communities, holding frequent peace meetings between the border communities, while the two communities should respect the buffer zone.

At the time Sunday Tribune visited the area, stern looking police men were seen maintaining peace and order.

The deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Benue State command, Mr. Ejike Alaribe, ASP, who spoke on phone, also confirmed that only one person lost his life during the fighting, adding that the Benue State Police Commissioner, Mr. Christopher Katso, personally directed the Area Commander in charge of Otukpo to move to the troubled communities to ensure that peace was restored there.

Bother not the poster as you can see he is a bigoted tribalistic man.

From the right source it has been proven that the attack was done by fulani herds men,
they are puting on our nigeria military uniform and weapon. after the investigation few of them
was caught and others run away.

Idoma elders has sent an information to Benue state Governor and sultan of sokoto.
this event took place when David mark(an Idoma man) told northern elders to stop boko boys else boko menace has the ability to divide nigeria.

after this speech they attacked his people trying to make it look Igbo. lastly they fail because the two village elders gathered, and found out
this is the hand work of their enemy hausa/fulani.

They attack idoma today make it to look ebonyi if nothing is done next they will attack ebonyi and make it look idoma.
but all is well for God has made open their secrets.

My personal warning to whichever tribe associates with hausa/fulani "you are making yourself an enemy of us all" and an enemy of our peace.
and this also has repercussion afterall.

Ten persons were reported killed and property worth millions of naira destroyed as Fulani herdsmen yesterday attacked some villages in Gwer-West Local Government of Benue State.
An eyewitness, Solomon Igbo, told The Nation that the herdsmen stormed the villages about 10am when the victims were in church, torching their homes after shooting sporadically.
Communities affected were Tsechile, Mbahungwa and Mbachwa in Mbakpa-Sengev district where more than 100 houses were destroyed.
Some residents were shot dead as they attempted to escape.

Another eyewitness said the invaders were armed with sophisticated weapons and dressed like Chadians, speaking Hausa.
The traditional rural of Gwer-west(Ter-Tyoshin), Chief Daniel Abomtse, said that they received information about the plan by the Fulani herdsmen to invade their village two days ago and they alerted security agencies.
Police spokesman Ejike Alaribe said information on the incident was still sketchy, “but our men are on ground to stop further destruction of life and property.”

the idoma's have shown since time immemorial that they are a peaceful people and very accomodating in every respect. there is no folktales or legend that suggested that the idoma people have been involved in any type of war before, be it tribal or religious. being the minority in benue state and sandwiched between major ethnic groups like ibos to the south it is only logical and it have been proven time again that the ebonyians are the aggressors.

thank God their grand scheme to include southern benue into the biafra did not materialize to make idomas their line of defence.

i served in ishiagu in ebonyi state and can tell u first hand the level of clannishment that exist amongs even same community.
the average ibo man is selfish and can pull his neighbor down at the slightest hint of percieved prosperity than theirs.

You can see the headless Igbo folks running all over the forum again suggesting Fulani people.LMAO!! Is it like the crap and lies was imprinted in your brains by default from birth.Simply ask how come Gov.Suswan(Benue) is meeting gov.Elechi(Ebonyi)? For what reason, if i may ask?Usually the governor of the affected state would have focused on the Fulani elders if truly the trouble around the area was Fulani issue. What we hear is about land and not cattles. It is about people owning and counter claims of ownership of a place. This is not part of a Fulani lifestyle or crisis related issue.Since only grazing and farmers bring such conflicts with the Fulanis. Here we are talking about someone hijacking lands and killing a father of four over land matters.Dressed in fatique and attacking from a region predominantly occupied by Biafrans.
Igbos should learn to state the obvious and the least you can do is keep yourself clean and not try to stain or accuse someone else falsely. You have being penciled as the culprits and instead of doing a soul search. You are trying implement your usual propaganda and conspiracy theory to deny matters and if it mean blaming another people,so be it.How selfish and idiotic. Are you folks perfect or saints? You should be ashamed of yourselves.
Lastly the Yorubas are a civilized people and represent a people with great achievement in any sphere of life. They are not slaves, neither are they bounded by any shackles with the north. They are free people with consideration and sound reasoning, which the Igbo will choose to pocket and act like some hateful soul always. The yorubas do not and in many cases have proved they are capable of breaking free of the military, single party dominance and influence of a single entity with the views a nd input of her people. That can not be said about the Igbos.Especially where selling and buying is involved undecided undecided undecided undecided undecided

I thought i was the only one that noticed that one-sidedness of the article. It seems the writer of the news article just gave us the one side of the story as it concersn the Idomas. He spoke to Mr Attah from Benue but never made an attempt to hear the other side of the story from the Ebonyi folks. I don't know the history of this land dispute and i won't take sides. But let our media people learn to be professional in their assessment of events.

I won't be surprised if this thread makes the frontpage despite it's ethnic coloration.

Reading all this craps you put up there made me to qualify you to be in the class of odualsoldier and you are not far from been one of tribune reporter.I wouldn't like to drag all yoruba's into this but i am tempted to do so why because the news paper that brought this junk news is a yoruba news paper, the unprofessional journalist who wrote this article is a core yoruba man.Now my question to yoruba's is what is their obsession with Igbo's? What happen to the adage that said, one don't have to judge issue between two people with one man testimony.I am totally against any form of intimidation or oppressing the minority,it will be unwise of any one who claim to be educated not to see pure bias in this poor journalism.I will disregard this news until i hear from the Ebonyi people.
