TravelRe: You want to COME TO AMERICA - Do You REALLY Know America? by 9icegee: 4:55pm On Oct 06, 2013
manny4life: I did not even know where to start from because of the information you put out there is blatantly false. For instance on the lease part, he won't be able to get a lease simply because he doesn't have a SSN to sign a new contract/lease contract. His option is to rent a room which is usually between $500-650 monthly everything included. There's nothing conservative about it, a girl friend of mine has rented a room out here in Springfield VA for $550. Go to Craigslist.com and get information, please STOP misinforming people.

As for the part of fancy phone, fancy furniture and fancy nonsense, I can see the reason why you hate America so much, I'm disliking it as well, but you and I tend to have different reasons. My friend, people like me have what we call budget, it's called financial discipline: spending less than you have. Why buy a Samsung Galaxy when other phones perform the same function? If I want clothes, I go to JCPenney for their sale, and few times at Macy's. What's with the rubbish of "fancy furniture"? It all makes sense why you hate America, YOU'RE BROKE.

Let me tell you something, in my house, the brown leather sectional I've had for 3years + is getting weak because friends and family sleep on it and and the leather on two part of seats are kinda breaking/chipping off.

Solution to the weakness of the spring: http://www.walmart.com/ip/As-Seen-on-TV-Furniture-Fix-Interlocking-Panels/16609877 The link is supporting panels I saw on As Seen on TV, it supports the couch, according to the ad, even a Sumo wrestler of 700lbs can bounce on your couch. I have no plans on replacing it, I said I will remove the leather covering and return it back to the store and see if my warranty covers a new leather, if not, I will buy a new leather covering or the slip-on cover. Total cost---> $150 or less. Do I plan on replacing my entire sectional that cost $1800 when I bought it on sale, HELL TO THE Bleep NO, and yes, after more than 3yrs, it's still looks decent. If I can take pictures, you will see for yourself.

You know when last I replaced my TV ? About 4 years ago, I still have flat screen from back then, 37inch to be precise. Have I been longing for the Samsung Internet TV with 3D, fvck yeah, do i really need it, hell no...Granted I augmented it with my xbox, blu-ray player, surround sound system, etc... That's it. Bros, according to all you have written, you seriously need financial discipline. I'd advice you get it. Anyone who can't live within their means and come here to write nonsense should please stay back.
if there's sometin wrong wit some1 i tink its u. Did u even understand wot emeka wrote? U just wake up and start mentioning stuffs u own (which we cant even say 4sure u're telling de truth). Who asked u all thosehuh My! Some ppl's comprehension is awesome!!
TravelRe: You want to COME TO AMERICA - Do You REALLY Know America? by 9icegee: 6:34am On Oct 06, 2013
InvertedHammer: Now you are talking. Don't let people like ozo emeka talk you out of pursuing better life for yourself. Remember in life there are 2 categories of people: People who see a cup of water as half-empty and others that see it as half-full. Be optimistic.

USA is the shiznit! Simple as that. With USA passport you don't need visa to most countries of the world. Try beating that. I was in Guangzhou
last year. While most Nigerian business men were having their passports scrutinized by the hotel they intended to lodge in, I breezed in like
a royalty with my USA passport without any delay. Other countries that matter respect USA. And you want to listen to ozo emeka? Laughs.
Heck if any country wahala me, I will run to the nearest USA embassy and will be offered full protection. Try running to Nigeria Embassy anywhere.

Two days ago, I flew back into Cali from Houston where I went to chill for a week to relieve stress.

Last night I left Grand Havana in Beverly Hills, drove through 101 FRWY heading south and drove past downtown Los Angeles.
Boy or boy. This is the place to be my brother.

I get paid bi-weekly and have never had to deal with salary in arrears. Government in Nigeria sometimes owe more than 2 months salaries in arrears. How can one plan his/her life around that shenanigan?

The funny thing is that no matter how busy things get in USA, I enjoy it. It beats being idle. I guess that explains why I get bored after 1 week in Nigeria. If you drive through Central District Abuja at night,it has that eerie feelings to it. No night life. NEPA does not help matter either. I chill at Transcorp most of the time and go to Cubana, Central Park or few other places in FCT to wind down. It gets old after few days. Now throw the fear of Boko in the midst, you have boredom waiting to happen.

Lagos is a no go area. Too dirty and noisy. I pretty much stay in doors in that city because if you don't jam trouble, trouble will jam you.

My brother, come "away" to broaden your horizon. After all na our people talk am say "waka waka na im sabi pass gray hair". The exposure is unquantifiable.
u r really inverted!! Its only ignorant ppl like tht guy asking u 4help (believing TV and ready to kill to travel abroad) and posting his e-mail address tht'l fall 4ur scam. I pity him! Go ahead and rip him off! Mayb after de experienc he'l be more enlightened (tho i strongly doubt he will)

manny4life: He was asking if it was realistic or not, if he wants Masters in Computer Security, then let him come. He has saved for tuition, fees, books, feeding, transportation... Everything else. At least if it doesn't work out, he earned his Masters and can get better job in Naija.
so is it realistic to leave a well paid job (a job tht can fund his vacations to US every year if he wants and if he uses his money wisely) for de unrealities of a different place? Wot happens ever his masters, supposing, it doesnt turn out de way he expected? He returns to nigeria and his job will be waiting 4him, righthuh I tinks he should be wiser dan just throw everytin in without an escape plan

adeaugustus: Am sorry to bust your bubble but you don't know what you're saying. Cost of living is directly proportional to average income in all US cities.
i guess if there's a bursting here its u thts bursted buddy. Wot am trying to imply is this, u can still live in less costly cities comfortably and the money u earn used more appropriately, dan wanting to feel among, like hey i live in new york! and most of ur earnings r gone in bills. Feel me now?
TravelRe: You want to COME TO AMERICA - Do You REALLY Know America? by 9icegee: 5:19pm On Oct 05, 2013
Jeezy: Ok. So, somebody in my office wants to resign from a N300,000 per month job, go and study Computer Security in the US (saved up the tuition and rent- about $30,000), get a job after his Masters using his post-study work visa, HOPE that his employer will file for his work permit, and earn an estimated $50,000 a year (estimate based on current vacancies in that field).

For the Nigerians in the US, does the above plan sound realistic? Is there a remote chance that this might be a good plan? What are the odds?

We all come to crossroads in life where we have to decide on which way to go. This decision can make or ruin a person's life. Help this 'somebody in my office' make a wise, informed decision. undecided
did i hear u say resignhuh U wanna resign from a 300K job to go face unrealities in another man's land? Y doesnt tht ur friend rather use his savings to make little travels abroad, get a job there FIRST, den think of moving over? He should be careful else he'l lose both ways
TravelRe: You want to COME TO AMERICA - Do You REALLY Know America? by 9icegee: 5:02pm On Oct 05, 2013
Originalsly: See misconception? This is the very thing this thread is trying to address. Hmmm...$10/hr...40hr/wk = $400/wk times 4 wks =$1600 /month. He doesn't see $400 deduction in taxes but brings out the calculator and carries on...1600 times ehmmm...160...hmmm....N256000 per month which is CATEGORICALLY way better than a graduate working for N80000 in Nigeria. He then transposes the standard of living such a salary would bring in Nigeria to the US and there fore concludes that such a person is wayyy better off....so off he goes to get a visa. The purpose of this thread to let people like him be informed that e.g New York City...it's $1200/month for a two bedroom apartment...if you are lucky. ..let's not mention other expenses. With this information...he would now be able to make a more informed decision and avoid unnecessary hardships. Now is this discouraging him from migrating?..that's what this thread is all about.
lol u made me laugh pretty hard!! Exactly de same tots i had wen i read tht. How wud u expect him to include tax wen they dont pay tax in nigeria (i mean compared to de taxing system abroad)? Thts y they just cant comprehend de essence of this thread. My colleague, a british, works in nigeria but had since moved from britain to south africa. Ask me y? He's running away from 40% deductions in his salary just for tax! I hope tht guy tht wrote this removes his calculato again and start pressing so he can grap wot tht means

Billyonaire: I do not particularly like the way that the OP's admonition has been misinterpreted.

His aim was for people to be aware of what to expect from culture shock to fiscal malapropisms.

I was born without a spoon in Nigeria, brought up by parents who barely travelled outside my State but ventured into Lagos NOT America armed with a degree then struggled the way up, now I own properties in the best places in Lagos by hard work, fear of poverty and focus. Going to America is good BUT what am saying is. YOU CAN MAKE IT RIGHT HERE. STAY AWAY FROM OTHER PEOPLE'S COUNTRY AND WORK ON YOUR GODDAMN COUNTRY.

I planned to buy a home in US but I changed my mind. Nigeria needs me and my sacrifice.

AMERICANS sweated tears and blood to make their countries work, we all should stop finding quick bucks and work on our country.

You do not need to travel to be rich, ask Dangote and the rest of the top dogs, you need focus and a plan.

FULL STOP!
its one thing those with narrow mind set will never get, no matter how u preach it my brother. They all believe american streets r lined with dollars

Don't mind the guy, it's a silly comparison, you don't earn #1500 per hour in Nigeria do you?
its not a silly comparison. Take a guy tht works in an oil company. He makes more dan 1500 naira an hour. But tell me, wil he be very comfortabl to buy a bottl of water at tht rate? No! The OP was trying 2show u tht in some cities in US cost of living and surviving is so bloody high. Y cant u guys just c some things EXACTLY DE WAY IT IShuh

chiboy1928: Do you wonder while americans and the british come to nigeria to invest example they don't pay tax here in nigeria as much as they pay in they own country and they have a lot of chances compare to wen they are back home so u see dat the opportunity they have and they come to our country make a lot of money because they see the opportunity we don't see!!!
thts one thing nigerians dont just know. De whites folks r running from their heavy tax system to nigeria, we nigerians r singing and crying out loud to go overseers. I wonder if they ever sit down with white guys and get a good gist of how life is like in some countries overseers. I doubt hey do

god_of_music: I've been following this thread with a wise mind-set, I read what the OP has written and I got the cents, authomatically this man has contributed to my life and I am not gonna forget what I have learnt from him so far.

@Moderators He wasn't trying to insult anybody,he was only quoting them with words that seems insultive to the understanding of we the third world countries as 'they' call it.

I just want the wise ones here to take the cents from the OP's Post and add to your account. Trust me, it's gonna multiply and probably make you Rich.

“Most people do not listen with the
intent to understand; they listen with
the intent to reply.
#WORD cool
point of correction pls. One, he de OP sure sounded insultive and has since corrected himself. Two, pls 'Third World Countries' is outta use. Now its DEVELOPED and DEVELOPING countries ok?
FoodRe: Cooking With Gas Or Kerosene, Which Is Cheaper (economical)? by 9icegee: 12:24pm On Oct 04, 2013
temnob25: Gas is better. Cos it's economical, cleaner, but could be dangerous if not careful!
there is absolutly no danger at all in using gas! Unless u're using old and leaking cylinders or cookers. Buy ur gas cooker. Get good regulators. Fix dem properly. Keep ur cylinder outside. Connect de hose inside. Simple. Where's de danger there? Kerosine stoves r rather filled wit so much danger u'l lose sleep just mentioning dem. Do u wanna talk about de poisonous soots it produces? Or de danger of kerosine explosion wen trying to 'blow it off'? De negative hygiene environment it'l surely turn ur kitchen into? I can go on and on (i dont wanna mention de time u'l have to wait 4de stove to warm up befor it now heats up wotever u put on it, by den, wotever was on a gas must'v been ready to be eaten, tho they were placed on de 'fire' at de same time. Try making water for garri on stove and gas. By de time ur water on stove boils, i must'v finished eating my garri meal i made on gas, probably done de dishes too)

Or is it ART students who r doing these EXCHANGEShuh Cos i can never believ a science student wil share in this conversions! SWG 1: he is not, some type of stove with special wick is cheaper than gas. i ve used both and compared even some stoves to other stoves
i was refering to him saying 12.5kg cooks 4 just a week in 11 ppl's household. Even if he runs a restaurant thts a lie! Well of cos unless he's using a gas burner tht leakes off de whole thing. But even with tht, it still wont be considered accurate (i hope am replying de right quote cos i said 'stop deceiving ppl' twice.
