The end to the present strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be in sight as President Goodluck Jonathan has approved N400 billion for the infrastructural development of Nigerian universities.

The document to this effect is expected to be made available today at the meeting of the presidential committee on implementation of the NEEDS assessment in the universities with the leaders of the four university-based unions – the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The President of SSANU, Samson Ugwoke, made the revelation while addressing his union members at the SSANU National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held at the weekend at the University of Abuja.

Ugwoke, briefing the SSANU members on the activities of the NEEDS assesment implementation committee, led by Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam. He noted that the fund was different from the N100 billion Governor Suswam had raised from donor agencies and big companies to tackle the problems of Nigerian universities in 2013.

The labour leader said: “Let me give you a tip on what the NEEDS assessment committee is doing. The president has approved that within the next four years; N400 billion would be expended in infrastructural development of Nigerian universities, to transform the universities to international standard.

“N100 billion has already been raised by Suswam committee out of which 61 universities have been pencilled down, as contained in the NEEDS assessement committee. The N100 billion is expected to address needs of the universities in the areas which include re-furbishing and renovation of lecture theatres and lecture halls, re-furbishing and renovation of laboratories/libraries and the renovation of hostels.

“The second category is building of new hostels of international standard, self-contained rooms, the latest model in the world. That is the standard to be built in every university, and also the state-of-the-art laboratories as well as classrooms, lecture theatres and the halls.”

Ugwoke pointed out that the money had been shared and out of the N100 billion, N96 billion had been sent to universities.

He added: “The committee is meeting again on Monday, and by Monday (today), the document will be out. This time around, it is not only by giving university money, but it will be monitored to ensure that the money is used to transform the universities, to bail universities out of the present situation and developed to an international recognized university standard.”

An 'Official-Lie' released by the Public Relations Officer of the Oasis of All Universities, OAU, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju, stated that the online registration for harmattan semester courses begins February 6, while clearance at faculty and admmission offices holds between February 27 and March 2, adding that the orientation week for fresh students will start on Monday, March 5 and end on Sunday, March 11, the same date that the returning undergraduate and post-graduate students are expected to come into residence.
Lectures will commence fully for the harmattan semester 2011/2012 academic session on Monday, March 12, while normal online registration for courses will end on Wednessday, March 28, before matriculation ceremony on Thursday, March 29. Olanrewaju, therefore, advised candidates who made OAU, Ile-Ife, as their first and/or second choices and sat for its Post-UTME to check their names from the list of candidates admitted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on the OAU website (www.oauife.edu.ng) or (e-portal.oauife.edu.ng) and follow procedures for registration as laid out,

Why ASUU Won’t Call Off Strike – ASUU President The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has
said it is not going to suspend its ongoing strike as
speculated by government, unless its demands are
met. The Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai,
after a meeting with the various university vice-
chancellors in Abuja told reporters that ASUU would
call off its three-month strike on Monday, following
the cooperation and assurances she got from the
university dons . But ASUU President, Prof Ukachuchwu Awuzie
yesterday, in a telephone interview with LEADERSHIP
SUNDAY noted that, ASUU was not a member of
the Association of Vice Chancellors, and as such,
could not call off the action until government
implemented its agreements with ASUU. He stressed that the lecturers’ body, would not abide by the
Association’s call to end the strike. “It’s all government’s propaganda! ASUU won’t call
off its strike so long as government shies away from
the issue of effective funding of the universities”,
Awuzie said. The union leader who however expressed the union’s
appreciation to the Senate for its efforts, especially in
passing the bill for the extension of the retirement age
of lectures from 65 to 70, but which is awaiting the
president’s assent to become a law, said, “The year of
retirement is just one of our demands, the funding is the cardinal,” he stressed. On a positive note, Awuzie said, “Mr. President has
scheduled a meeting with ASUU on Monday, If
government accepts to implement our demand, that is
when we will think of calling off the strike. “Even at that, the National Executive Committee of
ASUU will have to meet and have series of meetings
to agree on when to call off the strike. “However, with the intervention of Mr. President, I
believe the solution will come faster than expected”
