PoliticsEmbarrassing Video: Anti-buhari Protesters Don't Even Know Why They're Proesting by 9jaroof(op): 5:47pm On Feb 26, 2015
This is such an embarrassing thing to watch. Nigerians who went to protest against Buhari at Chattam House today didn't even know why they were there. One was asked, "why are you here?" she said "I don't know" and later said "I'm not against anyone" but you see her carrying an anti-Buhari placard. Most of them didn't even know what they were protesting about. If they were paid to be there, then whoever paid them should demand their money back. Too shameful.

PoliticsFadesola Adedayo: Jonathan Must Go by 9jaroof(op): 1:05am On Feb 25, 2015
For the sake of every Nigerian, Jonathan must go. The vast majority of the population, which is not part of the political elite, might think that the decision doesn’t concern them–“wetin concern me, nah me one do election?”; but in fact it concerns them more than any one else. When a ship is sinking, it is the 1st class cabin members who get the rowing boats – everyone else is left to sink.

PoliticsOkonjo-iweala: Nigeria Lacks Institutions, Systems & Processes To Prevent Corrup by 9jaroof(op): 10:11am On Feb 18, 2015
Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said on Tuesday that corruption persisted in the country because Nigeria lacked the institutions, systems and processes to prevent it.

Okonjo-Iweala made this known when she spoke on the Topic: Preventing Leakages in the Nigerian Economy at the Catholic Caritas Foundation Forum in Abuja.

According to her, the absence of the relevant systems and institutions that will help check corruption has created opportunities for people to engage in the act.

“This thing has been with us and we must crack it. This is not something that started in this country today; but it is something that we must crack.

Fundamentally, we have to ask ourselves, why has this continued to be a problem; I am convinced that it is because we constantly look at the symptoms and not the cause of the disease.

The cause of the disease is we don’t have in place the institutions, the systems and the processes to block and prevent it in the first place.

That’s the only difference between us and the people abroad,” she said.

The minister also stated that people would be compelled to do the right thing always if the appropriate systems were in place to block and prevent corruption.

She urged youths in the country to ask the relevant questions that would help tackle corruption in the country.

This is so important now because of technology and I am a total fan of the use of technology and electronic platforms to block the leakages in this country…We must use them the way they are being used in other countries.”

Okonjo-Iweala said that the introduction of the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMS) had helped to reduce physical movement of cash to make payments and curb corruption.

She said that the Integrated Personnel Payment System had also helped government to remove ghost workers from the system and save money in the process.

“We have been able to weed out about 62,893 ghost workers till date saving N208.7 billion and we have not finished in the system. That is addressing the root cause,” she said.

The minister revealed that the names of the persons found to be involved in the act had been sent to the ICPC for further action.

In addition, she stated that through the electronic wallet system introduced by the Ministry of Agriculture, government had been able to reduce corruption in fertilizer distribution in the country.

According to her, 10.5 million farmers have been registered under the system with more than 6 million being able to access the product personally.

This, she said, had contributed to increased food production.

The minister said that with the creation of the Pension Transmission Administration Department as demanded by law, issues with old pension were being handled systematically

She said that 14 people were presently on trial for various pension scams in the country.

Commenting on the outcome of the forensic audit on the alleged $20 billion missing oil money, the ministry had written to the NNPC asking it to remit the amount as directed by the auditors.

PoliticsPDP Plots Fresh Poll Shift, APC Senators Allege by 9jaroof(op): 9:34am On Feb 18, 2015
Members of the opposition All Progressives Congress in the Senate, on Tuesday, raised alarm of a fresh plot by the Peoples Democratic Party to postpone the forthcoming general elections slated for March 28 and April 11.

http://naijaroof.com/2015/02/18/pdp-plots-fres…enators-allege/ ‎
http://naijaroof.com/2015/02/18/pdp-plots-fres…enators-allege/ ‎

The senators, who walked out of the plenary to address the National Assembly correspondents in the Senate, alleged that the Presidency in collaboration with the ruling PDP were planning to arm-twist the electoral umpire in the country to canvass fresh postponement using the card reader as an excuse.

Their reaction followed the submission of the Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma-Egba, while moving a motion for the summoning of the Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, over the planned use of the card reader for the election.

Ndoma-Egba had argued that the use of card readers would contravene Section 52 of the Electoral Act which prohibits the use of electronic device during election.

But the senators, led by their leader, Senator George Akume, insisted at the news conference that anything short of conducting the elections as scheduled, and using the card reader to avoid rigging, might lead to a civil war.

They argued that since the card reader was just meant for the accreditation of the voters, its usage would not constitute a breach of the electoral act as postulated by the senate leader.

The opposition senators alleged that the PDP leadership having failed to use the security challenges and poor collection of Permanent Voter Cards as excuses to postpone the polls again, had started a fresh plot by hiding under the card reader usage.

Akume said, “Elections must be held as rescheduled, it is important that the Independent National Electoral Commission must do this in order to avoid unpleasant consequences.

“Nigeria is a huge and complex society, culturally, structurally, and all hands must be on the deck to avoid the Somalia experience. There would be too many warlords in this country should we fail to do what is right.

“Nigerians deserve the best. Card readers will add value to the conduct of the elections; we are talking about free and fair elections. Time has passed when people carry ballot boxes and papers to their respective rooms, thumb-print and bring them for counting the following day.

“The whole world is watching this country. We have become a laughing stock, we are becoming a banana republic.

“We are even more patriotic than those who are in government. We want elections and card readers must be applied, they must be used, otherwise, the elections can never be free and fair.

“If a country like Ghana can get it right, using the card reader, why can’t the giant of Africa do it? If Sierra Leone can do it, even Liberia, why can’t Nigeria do it? We are waiting for INEC to do it, INEC must use it.

“Card readers are a must to ensure free, credible and acceptable elections. To do otherwise, won’t be acceptable.”

The opposition senators further alleged that the APC representatives, former Heads of State and the former Chief Justices who attended the National Council of State meeting where the issue of election postponement was discussed, strongly opposed the idea.

Akume said, “From the records, we know that all the former Heads of State supported the holding of the election as scheduled. Former Chief Justices, those who know the law also supported the holding of the elections.

“But INEC later said the elections could not hold on the flimsy grounds that the service chiefs said they could not provide security. Security for what?

“We have over 774 local government areas in this country and serious security breaches in the North-East are registered in only 14 local governments and therefore, there was no reasonable grounds to shift the elections.

“We recall that in 1999, there was no election in Bayelsa during the first round of voting, elections were later held.

“Under normal circumstances, we believe the situation is also normal now, these affected areas should have been isolated for the purpose of holding elections at a later date but this was not to be.

“We are all learned people, educated people to know that elections have been held in Columbia, which is perpetually at war with itself, elections have been held in Egypt, in Afghanistan, in Iraq, in Syria, in Pakistan, in Mali, Tunisia and other countries.

“Nigeria cannot be an exception. The reason was lack of adequate distribution of PVCs, later, it turned to be inability to provide security cover and we wonder that the multi-national force that has been assembled to fight Boko Haram is just 7,000, including the Nigerian troops and we have a troop level of over 100,000 in this country.

“Why is it not possible to hold elections with adequate security cover for those who are supposed to do their jobs constitutionally? We believe that there is serious manipulation and a deliberate attempt to undermine and to manipulate the democratic institutions and structures.”

PoliticsI Won’t Islamise Nigeria, Buhari Tells Christian Leaders by 9jaroof(op): 7:58am On Feb 12, 2015
The Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has told Christian clerics that he will not Islamise the nation.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday, Buhari said this during a meeting with Catholic bishops at the Pope John Paul Centre in Abuja.

Buhari said he would always put Nigeria first if elected into office, adding that when he ruled Nigeria between December 1983 and August 1985, he did not impose Islam on any individual.

He said having served in the military, he had been posted to several parts of the country and served alongside people of different religions and tribes.

He said the Peoples Democratic Party had succeeded in misrepresenting him to the Christian community because they could not sell their candidate.

He said, “I would like to solemnly declare that in spite of what our detractors say, I am not a religious fanatic of any sort and I have never been. In all my life, I have never supported extremism of any kind, and nowhere in my record of service to this nation can this false toga political opponents have tried so hard to put on me, be substantiated. Indeed, it is very unfortunate and I feel extremely sad that I have to give this type of assurance.

“My background is in the army, and there is no doubt that the military is the most integrated pan-Nigerian institution. And even today, the military is one of the institutions that represents the pride of our nation’s possibilities in unity.

“Compatriots from every corner of this country come together, work and live together, entrust their lives to each other and integrate their families. It is a military where many of my dearest friends from all faith and parts of the country, lost their lives defending the unity of our nation. That was the military I served in, and in that military it was impossible to be a bigot.”

He said in governance, competence should always come before religion and that was why as head of state, he appointed 11 Christians as governors out of the 19 states.

He said religion comes from personal conviction and should never be used to gain political advantage.

He noted that his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, was not only a lawyer but a senior pastor.

He said, “For me, the issue of religion is, and should always, be a matter of personal conviction. This personal conviction approach to religion has defined my work and interactions all my life, including my tenure in office as military Head of State.

“The religion of all those I worked with was never a factor in their progress or in what happened to them. All that mattered then, and should still matter today, are competence, integrity and readiness to be fair to all.

“I was recently informed that we had a balanced cabinet with key positions such as Finance, Energy and Defence occupied by Christians. In addition, 11 of the 19 governors I appointed were Christians. My most memorable recollections of subordinate service was under Christian bosses, the finest our country had then, and among the most respected today. Indeed one of the best appraisals I received in the course of my military career was from General T.Y Danjuma.”
