By Alao Abiodun Embattled Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo popularly known as Sunday Igboho has been in the eye of the storm since he was ‘arrested’ by the operatives of Brigade criminelle (Criminal Brigade) on July 19 in Cotonou. The Nation reports before Igboho’s arrest, his Ibadan home was raided by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), killing two of his aides and arresting 12 others during the operation. The 48-year-old agitator who narrowly escaped the bloody raid, was subsequently declared wanted for allegedly stockpiling arms to destabilise Nigeria under the pretext of Yoruba Nation. Igboho, after going underground for 19 days, was finally arrested in neighbouring Cotonou, Benin Republic, while trying to travel to Germany. He was arrested with his wife, Ropo, but the Cour De’appal De Cotonou ordered the release of the wife based in Germany saying there were no allegations against her. Since he was arrested, the legal battle to either extradite Igboho to Nigeria or hand him back his freedom has witnessed a series of dramatic twists and turns. One of Igboho’s lawyers, Yomi Aliyu SAN, had argued that Igboho cannot be extradited to Nigeria because of the extradition treaty of 1984 between Togo, Nigeria, Ghana, and Republic of Benin. But in the last judgment, the Cour De’appal De Cotonou ordered that Igboho should be kept in prison custody. https://thenationonlineng.net/timeline-igboho-spends-one-month-in-benin-republic-detention/ |
By Alao Abiodun Gospel Artiste Adeyinka Alaseyori has broken her silence on the viral Tope Alabi’s criticism of hit song ‘Oniduro Mi eseun o’. The Nation reports in a video making the rounds on social media, Tope Alabi said God isn’t her guarantor because He’s more than a guarantor. Tope Alabi’s comment elicited negative reactions from music lovers with the gospel singer trending across social media platforms. But the visibly happy Alaseyori on Sunday during an Instagram live monitored by The Nation, repeatedly sang her popular hit song titled ‘Oniduro Mi eseun o’ (my guarantor, I’m grateful). Alaseyori also sang other popular songs of Tope Alabi. While she did not make any direct comments on the viral criticism of Tope Alabi, Alaseyori praised her husband for being a gentleman. She thanked her fans for their numerous support, stating she has been cautioned not to make comments on the controversy. https://thenationonlineng.net/oniduromi-adeyinka-alaseyori-breaks-silence/

https://thenationonlineng.net/reporters-diary-my-covid-19-vaccine-experience/ By Alao Abiodun Arriving the C.M.S Primary Health Centre Bariga in Lagos around 9:30am last Friday, the atmosphere was calm, orderly and serene. "Only health workers, security agencies, the press, strategic leaders and other frontline workers are eligible to take part in the first phase of the ongoing vaccine rollout," announced the courteous healthcare matron. At the point of entry, I had to identify myself upon questioning by the security guards. After prompt introduction, I walked in and took a seat confidently knowing fully well I was qualified. The seats were arranged strategically at the centre for people to sit calmly and wait for their turn. The vaccination site was an open-air space. Elderly persons — 70+ and above — retired health workers, some others adorning their nose masks, were seated taking turns to go through the registration and capturing process. While I picked a seat, I developed sudden fear. I guess it was just a vaccine fright because I was about to get the first dose of the Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, which has generated series of controversies in some countries over its safety and efficacy in the past few weeks. But my fears were doused when I saw elderly persons ahead of me getting vaccinated and feeling rejuvenated afterwards. Also, my conversation with some persons at the centre, especially about those who've been vaccinated, rekindled calmness. I mustered to myself I should be okay. The first port of call was to get registered in the vaccine registration booklet with resemblance of NYSC book of life. Answering a couple of questions, all necessary details were rightly documented in the manual registration process before proceeding for the e-capturing process. Prior to this, I had initially registered through a portal created for self-registration but it appears to be invalid upon getting to the site. After the capturing process, which involves responding to questions such as personal details, photo capturing and scanning of the vaccine card issued by the health worker, the next port of call was to receive the vaccine. While the process was a seamless exercise that can be concluded in a jiffy, there were hitches at some point. The e-capturing tool experienced server problems. After about six hours of waiting, in-between, security agencies were prioritised for quick attention — the person administering it asked if I had any relevant or known allergies before taking the vaccine. At about 2:15pm, I received the vaccine. I was with the nurse for under two minutes, the nurse checked my vaccine card, swabbed my left arm, told me that afterward I needed to wait 10 minutes before leaving the arena, asked if I had any other questions and gave me the injection. Once you get the shot, you’ll be given a card that has the date you received the first shot, the scheduled date for the second shot and the type of vaccine that you received — Oxford AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine on it. Once 10 minutes passed, she asked how I was feeling and I told her I was great. So she said I was free to go Receiving the COVID-19 vaccine was a tremendous sense of relief especially amid the different speculations. I maintained calmness and tried to study my body's response to the jab throughout the rest of the day. I felt fine for the rest of the afternoon while I carried out my other activities of the day. Later in the evening, I felt this sudden dizziness. Advisedly, one is expected to take paracetamol to douse any form of pain. I also had a light feeling of discomfort, including headache and pains at the arm where I got the shot; afterwards I was relieved when I woke up Saturday morning. But the pain from the injection made my left arm heavy. I did not experience any adverse reaction. Getting vaccinated is the only reasonable measure of defense against this raging virus that upended nearly every facet of our lives -- and that of the rest of the world However, while I noticed there was a deficiency in terms of 'counseling' those to be vaccinated before the process, I strongly think there should also be provision for those who are hearing-impaired at the centres. At this point, there is a need to tell more COVID-19 vaccination stories as it could be a more powerful way of convincing some people to take the vaccine than just stating the facts. I look forward to getting my second shot in June! Alao Abiodun is a Journalist with The Nation Newspapers. Cc @Freiburger @R231 @Dominique @Sissy3

By Sam Omatseye https://thenationonlineng.net/hushpuppis-death/ It is Ramon Abbas he bears. Even that name puzzles. Some reports anglicise his first name as Raymond. But it is Hushpuppi we know, poetic, lyrical and even symbolic. Hush implies silent, furtive, conspiratorial, shadowy. Puppy, in this regard, means playful like a week-old dog. That makes him a sly dog. But then it has other origin stories. Some others date it back to the founding of New Orleans that gives the world Mahdi Gras, an unhinged carnival for pilgrims of pleasure. An immigrant woman invented a snack of a ball out of cornmeal and the city called it hushpuppy. Their own incarnation of akara. Even then, Abbas’ nickname is spelt ending with an i instead of a y. The one picture that has trended of late features him in a shirt sporting a familiar brand Fendi. But another brand had been stalking him like a forest cat, slinking, longsuffering and calculating. It was a brand as counterforce: FBI. Nabbed in Dubai but caught in the United States, the sojourn of a colorful conman comes to an end. Behind bars, he will wear neither Gucci nor LV, but an orange top that will, at best, say INMATE. Now he is no more Hushpuppi. He is now Abbas. He buried his real name in a casket of lies and deceit. He was reborn a glamour icon, one-named, abandoned home, and became a global Smart Alec. He was a man of means with no means of livelihood. He conquered cyberspace, dispossessed the gullible, stashed his global bank account, strutted the world, amassed dream cars, snored in palaces, dressed like a fop, preened like a peacock, seduced the young and befuddled the old. He became a role model to a lazy generation that lapped luxury without labour. When he was caught, the FBI buried Hushpuppi and rebirthed Abbas. But where is the real Abbas though? Can he recognise Ramon again? He cannot. Like Sophocles’ Antigone, he “neither dwells among men nor ghosts.” He is in a dazed world, a wraith. He died twice; he is born again a jailbird, his third life. He was reckless. Now he is a wreck. But Abbas is a tale for the moment, if in reverse. He was caught trying to denude a group of people in millions of dollars in palliatives in a time of pandemic. Abbas is a picture of avarice at a time of sacrifice. He was flaunting his shoes, cars, mansion, parties at a time when many hid behind homes, suffered in hospitals, coughed in misery, mourned or were mourned. He represented a heartless species when we were supposed to be our neighbours’ keepers, when many were suddenly whisked out of work. When his fellow country folks lost their jobs, and men of means contributed their millions and billions to the poor, Abbas was a show-off. The thing with Abbas was no lockdown could stop his party. His extravagance was online. The world was his audience. He flourished and frolicked in real time and space, but his fans joined him virtually. His was a Viewer’s paradise. The young gawped and gawked, followed him, and commented. When they cursed, they did it out of smouldering admiration. He had come to represent a generation of Nigerians who did not trust their parents or their bosses or their leaders. They followed their greed. They followed Hushpuppi. He was a priest of a new goddess: money. Abbas for them was a sort of escape. He had become the man who gamed the system and scored. All the stadia in the world applauded. They are like the character of the English novel Billy Liar, a young man who lived in his imagination where he had attained power, wealth and glory, although he had nothing other than living from paycheck to paycheck. Abbas embodied that escape for them. They lived in Hushpuppi. They wore his Fendi, lived in his palace, flew in his jet, caroused his women, or were his women, they sat in the driver’s seat of his Ferrari and Lamborghini and Rolls-Royce. Here fellow Nigerians had no chance to host Owambes. Weddings and birthdays and funerals have been pruned to parlors and backyards. It is a time for humility, and it was only proper that the man who countered it be caught and put away. These days no one has anywhere to go with Gucci shoes. No first class tickets to buy to London and take pictures for online vanity. No one has a chance to pile pockets with dollars and pounds to spray a celebrant. Those with big cars cannot drive them to anywhere for displays. No extravagances for the Mephistophelean or the harmless show man. The worst we can do is dress up at home, and flaunt it to our child or wife or husband, like Miss Havisham in Dickens’ Great Expectation who dressed every day for years in her wedding clothes and died in it without leaving her home. Those with special cars only warm their engines and drive around the neighbourhood. These times are revealing our material constipation. Abbas, the man of constipation, has now left the building, his bowels rumbling with faecal waste. Things are upside down. Those who see churches and mosques as avenues for amassing wealth are crowing that they want people together but they are tempting the Lord. It is possible that Abbas had some of these men of God praying for him, and he may be taking from this stolen money to feather the house of God. It is an irony we have people like this thriving when we hear men of God preaching. The point though is that this is an age where the Word of the Lord is trading places with the wealth of the Word. Quite a few churches give precedence to material splendor. It is a different kind of hypocrisy from a war-time play Mother Courage where Brecht says, “Whenever there’s a load of special virtues around, it means something stinks.” Abbas epitomises the Yahoo Boys, and his fall is their fall. It is a comeuppance for a tribe of desperadoes who have demonised technological genius. The new frontier of progress is also their front for fraud. It is not for nothing that he has been associated with some of our big-name politicians, even if they had nothing in common. He has had photo-ops with a few of them. If he were not Hushpuppi but merely Ramon Abbas, we might not have seen such pictures. But our politicians have one quality in common with him: impunity. Where leaders promise and turn back on their word, it is as bad a lie as a Hushpuppi popping up on a person’s email and asking for one piece of information and turning the email into an opportunity to stalk and destroy. They are the monitoring spirits of the internet. They get the person’s account and they empty it. We also see our politicians take away our money when others have nothing. Fraud is now familiar terrain of politicians. To be a politician is to seek avenue for self-service, not service to all. But the arrest of Abbas is hope, but not enough. It shows even the new frontier can be stalked and the crime encircled and ended. Our people are not doing well enough to catch those who are well-off by wrong means. A few have been caught. We want more. Abbas is caught today, and no one is hailing him. His audience is now jeering. He is like Jay Gatsby in Scot Fitzgerald’s novel. He acquires his fable of wealth to get back a woman, and buys a big mansion just like Hushpuppi. Every neighbour comes to his frequent parties but not the woman he craves. He eventually dies alone and poor. Everybody comes to his parties but no one goes to his funeral. Abbas is alone now. So is Hushpuppi. Abbas looks on as no one comes to Hushpuppi’s funeral. Hushpuppi’s frozen eyes look without seeing as Abbas goes behind bars.

Wike announces temporary lifting of lockdown From Rosemary Nwisi, Port Harcourt Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has announced the temporary lifting of the total lockdown on Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt Local Government Areas for two days only, with effect from Tuesday 12th May 2020. Governor Wike made the announcement in a State-Wide broadcast last night. He said that the total lockdown will be lifted on Tuesday 12th May, 2020 and Wednesday, 13th May, 2020. Governor Wike said the temporary lifting of the lockdown is for residents to restock foodstuffs and medicines to their homes. Governor Wike said that the lockdown will be reinstated on Thursday, 14th May, 2020. He said: “Consequently, we have given due consideration to the propositions on the way forward by well-meaning citizens of the State, and after a cautious review of the situation, decided to implement a partial relaxation of the lockdown measures, to enable residents to have some fresh air and replenish their foodstuffs and medicines. “To this end, I hereby announce the temporary lifting of the total lockdown on Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt Local Governments Areas for two days only, with effect from Tuesday 12th May 2020. All shops, supermarkets, and malls can open to the public for Tuesday and Wednesday, 12 and 13 May 2020. “Similarly, all hospitals and banks can also open and provide full services to the public. “While oil and gas companies are required to submit the list of their staff on essential duties to Government, note that there is no ban on the lifting of petroleum products from depots and other receptacles. “The total lockdown on Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt Local Government Areas will be reinstated on Thursday 14th May 2020 and remain until further notice.” Governor Wike said all other established restrictions under the Executive Orders on social distancing are still in force. He said: “Compulsory wearing of face mask or scarfs in vehicles and public places; Closure of all land, sea and air borders and entry routes into the State; and Closure of all open markets, including slaughters, hotels, guest houses, cinemas, bars and restaurants; and Ban on gathering, including public burials, weddings, and religious gathering of more than 50 persons. Once again, thank you for your cooperation and understanding. “Please note that our enemy is invisible. Stay at home, maintain social distancing, wash your hands regularly and stay safe. Read Also: Outrage over Wike’s demolition of multi-million naira hotels He said every measure the State Government has imposed was dictated by an assessment of the state’s situation, the trend of transmission and the conviction that it was the right thing to do in the circumstance. “As a Government, we are doing our utmost best, in the face of daunting challenges, to prevent COVID-19 from taking hold in Rivers State; to stop any possible community transmission of this disease before it is too late. “And we shall continue on this trajectory because the alternative would spell a greater disaster for our State and our people. “More so, when these are not arbitrary measures but fully prescribed and backed by the ordinary laws of our State, especially, Executive Orders numbers: 1 to 6. “So far, all our measures and actions are not arbitrary but fully prescribed, guided and backed by the ordinary laws of our State, especially Executive Order numbers 1 to 6, which apply equally to all persons throughout the State. As a Government, we are obliged to enforce our laws, and in the present circumstance, we have done so without fear or favour,” he said. He added: “We equally made it loud and clear that in the fight against COVI/D-19 there would be no sacred cows; no double standards, and no sentiments of any kind, whether political, ethnic, religious, status, emotional or otherwise. “In the last few days we have pursued with vigour and secured several convictions against those who intentional violated our COVID-19 containment laws in the same way others States are doing. “The forfeited trucks to be auctioned by the Deputy Sherriff were not confiscated arbitrarily by the State Government, but by the orders of our Courts. Governor Wike stated that the demolition of the two hotels in Eleme was done in line with extant laws. He said: “Similarly, we acted against the hotelier because, apart from using the facility to jeopardize the lives of our citizens in violation of the extant law, the owner audaciously unleashed thugs lead by the Eleme Local Government Youth Leader of the Peoples Democratic Party and inflicted severe injuries on our task-force members who went to enforce the law against the continued operation of the hotel. “As we speak, nobody knows the fate of the lives of most of the victims of that brazen and deadly attack given the severity of the head injuries they sustained. “And so, we’ve done no wrong as all our actions were taken in good faith and justified by, under and within the purview of the Executive Orders, which have neither been challenged nor set aside by any competent court of law. The Governor said he remains focused on protecting Rivers people. He said: “Therefore, while we welcome genuine criticisms directed towards strengthening our intervention measures; it is no use joining issues with uninformed critics and social media legal practitioners who, blinded and prodded by sheer politics, bias and hatred, have opted to demonized and paint our lawful and responsible actions in bad light. “Granted that we may not have totally achieved our targets, but we are convinced that, so far, the lockdown and the other measures have impacted greatly in containing and preventing the onslaught of the pandemic on Rivers State. “We therefore thank the entire people of Rivers State for the overwhelming understanding you have shown even as you continue to endure the pains of the restrictions on your wellbeing and fundamental freedoms.” https://thenationonlineng.net/just-in-wike-announces-temporary-lifting-of-lockdown/ lalastica mynd44

Down to the southwest region, the rising spate of insecurity in region birthed the "Operation Amotekun" and so far it has received widespread commendations from many and few backlash from those who brought in sentimental views. It therefore appears that this complementary security outfit which has fought its way through for survival upon the unveiling by the southwest governors, is set to replicate itself in other regions of the country and now the nation is set to witness an avalanche of "Operations" across the nation — Operation Obunigwe in the east, Operation Amotekun in the west and Operation Shege Ka Fasa in the North — directed towards tackling insecurity and criminal activities. One of the many question which keeps resonating in the mind of many is, who are those advising our dear Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu? Because it appears he is threading quietly on a very thorny path. When some unfriendly and obnoxious policies are made, it makes one to wonder if there was a wide and elaborate consultation/town hall meetings for popular acceptance of these policies. The recent policy made by the Lagos state government under under leadership of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to clampdown on Okadas, Opay's ORide, GOkada and some others with respect to some routes in Lagos is very much unfriendly and ill-timed. It makes one to wonder why the "ease of doing business" is under threat in a state regarded to be the model for other states. Those in support of the bill are of the opinion that it is necessary to curb and stem the tide of fake news which is doing more harm than good to the country. While on the other hand, those against the bill have stated that the passage of the bill into law will give room for dictatorial tendencies from the government and also a sort of crackdown on dissidents who air their views or opinions through these media. Many Nigerians perceive the ember months — September, October, November and December- to be synonymous with mysterious happenings. Within these four months, a fever, perhaps sort of anxiety, grips most Nigerians. Without doubt, the ‘ember’ months are always the busiest on roads for many reasons and the air of festivity within these periods makes everyone ecstatic. From the religious perspective, many people believe these tragic occurrences are caused by evil spirits associated with these months. They argue it is a season when prayers should be intensified to curtail the incidence of evil. While this fear for the ‘Ember months’ seems to be a natural phenomenon, it is important that we also pay attention to the dangers that have now been associated to what is now termed “the ember months”. Fire Outbreak – Fire is one of the major causes of accident during Ember months because the air becomes dryer, thus encouraging chain reaction of fire. Ember months usually come with gradual subsiding of the rains and encroachment of the Harmattan haze. These Harmattan hazes fuel fire outbreak in marketplaces, offices, worship centers, farms, bushes Accidents – In Nigeria, the ember months are known as a period of hectic activity on roads. People use this end of year period to engage in business and travel to visit loved ones living far away. According to the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC), a total of 5,181 Nigerians lost their lives in road traffic crashes (RTC) in 2018. Further analysis revealed that the top five causes of road accidents are: Speed violation Wrongful overtaking Dangerous driving Tyre burst Brake failure. Other factors that also cause road accidents during this period are: excessive speeding, overloading and impatient passengers making passive comments to the driver while driving. Many drivers place their safety at risk by overloading their vehicles. Kidnapping – Though insecurity and kidnapping are not new in Nigeria, there are always on the increase in during the ember months. Kidnapping has evolved into a lingering, pervasive security threat and fast-paced and multifaceted criminal enterprise. It is now perpetrated by diverse armed groups and criminal gangs operating across the country Young and old have been victims; others have had the gruesome experience of loosing loved ones to these kidnappers. Robbery and other criminal activities – Some of the most common types of robberies experienced in Nigeria are home robberies, car robberies and bank robberies. Today, armed robbery is not only one of the biggest threat in Nigeria, but also a social scourge Robberies can occur almost anywhere at any time, but tend to occur more often in anticipated settings and at expected times. All that is necessary is a motivated robber and an unwilling victim at the wrong place at the wrong time. Excessive alcohol intake and smoking – Alcohol is a major factor in many speed-related crashes. Sadly, manufacturers of alcoholic beverages have not been very supportive of anti-drink drive campaigns. Small-sized bottles of alcoholic drinks are being consumed by drivers without a thought for safety on the road. In some advanced nations such as the United Kingdom, members of the public have adequate information about the legal alcohol limits. Reckless driving of commercial vehicles – Some drivers are very reckless. They see themselves as the kings of the road. So, they park, stop and swerve the car indiscriminately. Funny enough, they involve themselves in a car race to know who is a faster driver. While doing this, they mistakenly hit pedestrians crossing, traders or even bystanders. This can result in grave injuries or even deaths. All these acts are very dangerous to road users and needs to be looked into if we want people to be safe. As it has done over the past several years, it is expected that the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) will once again embark upon its annual road safety campaign. In all that you do during this Ember months, remember to stay safe, be watchful and careful Source: https://thenationonlineng.net/six-dangers-to-watch-out-for-in-ember-months/
