*JUST IN* *FEDERAL GOVERNMENT APPROVES 15.89 BILLION FOR ASUU* *FG/ASUU TO MEET ON MONDAY* Varsities may reopen soon, with the Federal Government making concessions to the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The concessions will be tabled before the union’s leaders on Monday at a meeting to be convened by Labour and Employment Minister Chris Ngige. The Minister has reached out to the ASUU leadership for the “robust feedback session” with the hope that the union will return to the negotiation table. Varsity lecturers on November 4, last year, began a strike to push the implementation of the 2017 Memorandum of Action. The Memorandum was a follow-up to the 2009 FG-ASUU Agreement. ASUU National President Biodun Ogunyemi attributed the strike to “the insincerity of government in meeting our demands”. The demands are: payment of shortfall in salaries of universities; waiver/ government fiat to set up Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company; (NUPEMCO); revitalisation funds for varsities; and payment of earned academic allowances for lecturers, senior staff and other workers. But on Monday, the Federal Government succeeded in addressing the demands of the lecturers and other unions. “One of the conditions met by the Federal Government was the release of N15.89billion to universities on New Year’s Eve( Monday) for the payment of shortfall in salaries of universities,” a source told The Nation. “The cash is expected to hit the account of all the institutions on or before the close of work today (Wednesday),” he added, pleading not to be named. “The government has also set aside N20billion as revitalisation funds for varsities. The National Universities Commission( NUC) has been directed to work out the modalities for allocating the funds to all institutions. “On the demand for the setting up of Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company ( NUPEMCO), the government has directed the National Pension Commission (NUPEMCO) to issue a licence for the company’s take-off. “Funds have also been set aside for Earned Academic allowances for lecturers, senior staff and other workers.” Replying a question, the source added: “This agreement was inherited by the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, but despite the lean resources available to the government as a result of the fall in oil prices, we have done our best to meet ASUU demands.” Ngige said: “We have gone far in considering the demands of the lecturers. We have substantially met the conditions. “I am meeting with ASUU leaders on Monday where all steps taken by the government will be tabled before them. This is a responsive and transparent government, we have done our best to meet the conditions. “In fact, officials from the Ministry of Budget and National Planning will be at the next meeting with ASUU leadership where they will be briefed on facts and figures. “We are hopeful that the actions taken by the government will be acceptable to ASUU for our schools to reopen.” ASUU Chairman in the Southwest Zone Dr. Deji Omole denied knowledge of any updates on the union’s negotiation with the Federal Government. Omole, who is also the Chairman, University of Ibadan chapter , told The Nation that the government was yet to call another meeting in the ongoing negotiation since over two weeks ago. He said the negotiating committee was awaiting announcement of a new date for talks. Source The Nation Newspaper |

I was very saddened when I learnt of the departure of Former President and Commander-In-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, Alhaji Shehu Aliyu Usman. Shehu Shagari Shehu Shagari Our departed former President who had the rare opportunity of ruling Nigeria during the Second Republic, was indeed a man of honour, dignity and character. He was a very considerate, accessible, objective, selfless and kind man. I had the rare privilege of meeting him when I was a Counsel to the Federal Government in Justices Ayo Irikefe enquiry into an alleged 2.8 billion pounds diverted from the central bank of England into a private account in Midland Bank in England. What stands this epitome of decency and integrity out is his vaunting patriotism, open door policy, simplicity, humility and his love for education. The people of old Ondo State which included the present Ekiti State will forever remain grateful to the departed hero (Shagari), the Second Republic Senate Leader, late Dr. Olusola Saraki and the then Chairman of the ruling National Party of Nigeria (NPN), the late Chief Augustus Meredith Adisa Akinloye, who accepted my request to hold a rally in Ado-Ekiti on Saturday, 11th of October 1980 where the Federal Government announced the citing of a Federal University of Technology in Ado-Ekiti to begin academic work in October 1981. This announcement gingered the then Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin-led UPN Government in the then bigger Ondo State to hastily announce the establishment of a university in Ado-Ekiti. The university was to have eight campuses in Ado-Ekiti, Ikere, Owo and other towns in Ondo State. The political gymnastics that ensued between NPN and UPN led to the transfer of the university of technology meant for Ado-Ekiti to Akure; and the transfer of the Federal Polytechnic at Akure to Ado-Ekiti. The departed Alhaji Sagari was therefore responsible for the three higher institutions which now exist in Ondo and Ekiti States. His name will remain indelible in the hearts of the fair minded members of the two states. By his death, Nigeria has lost a rare gem and an irreplaceable hero, who stood and fought for the good of the majority. Our consolation is that he led a good life and above all, he left his indelible foot prints on the sands of times. He was undoubtedly a great man, a worthy and an exemplary example of what a leader should be. I commiserate with President Muhammadu Buhari, the Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III and the entire Shagari family of Sokoto over the death of this thoroughly distinguished citizen who played his part very well. While wishing him a most-deserved rest, I pray that the Almighty Allah will grant theShagaris and the people of Nigeria the grace and the equanimity to bear the irreparable loss. His humanitarian services and the many lives he touched while on planet earth will surely stand him in good stead before the Almighty, the Maker of All Things. May I therefore humbly suggest that the Federal Government should consider naming the Federal University of Technology Akure after this illustrious son of Nigeria. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2018/12/tribute-to-shehu-shagari-name-federal-university-of-technology-akure-after-shagari/amp/

Happy New Year 2019: Reporters will be the guests of honour at the New Year’s Eve party in New York’s Times Square on Monday, in what organizers said was a celebration of press freedom after an unusually deadly year for journalists at US news outlets. Happy New Year 2019: As we bid adieu to 2018, celebrations around the world have already begun to usher in 2019. In Auckland, New Zealand’s biggest city, tens of thousands gathered around Sky Tower as fireworks exploded from the top of the 328-meter (1,076-foot) structure. Across the southern hemisphere nation, thousands took to beaches and streets, becoming the first major nation in the world to usher in 2019. Reporters will be the guests of honour at the New Year’s Eve party in New York’s Times Square on Monday, in what organizers said was a celebration of press freedom after an unusually deadly year for journalists at US news outlets, Reuters reported. On the other hand, France is deploying more than 1,47,000 security forces nationwide to gird for New Year’s Eve unrest as yellow vest protesters prepare to join the public revelry. New Year’s Day, which according to the Gregorian calendar falls on January 1, is one of the most popular occasions across the globe and people irrespective of religion, caste and creed celebrate it in their own ways VIDEO . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g9JQAcWKnCs https://www.google.com/amp/s/indianexpress.com/article/world/happy-new-year-2019-live-updates-journalists-to-lead-celebrations-at-new-yorks-times-square-5516929/lite/ Lalasticlala Seun Marpol Mynd44 Dominique Ishilove Semid4lyfe Obinoscopy |

Yuletide Power Outage: Obaseki Describes BEDC's Excuse as Flimsy, Unacceptable …Appeals to Buhari to revoke operational licence of power firm Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has again decried the gross inefficiency of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) in providing stable electricity for residents of the state, who will celebrate Christmas and the New Year festivities in darkness. Obaseki said Edo people deserve a better service provider than BEDC, more so, considering the fact that Edo State is host to Azura Power plant which generates over 700MW of electricity to the national grid. "At a time families should be enjoying uninterrupted electricity supply as they celebrate Christmas and New Year in the state, BEDC is again unable to live up to the minimum expectation of providing electricity. "No excuse is good enough for the abysmal failure of BEDC and we appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to without delay, revoke the operational licence of BEDC and rescue Edo people and residents from the crappy service being delivered to our people who are harassed weekly by BEDC to pay for electricity that it did not supply," Obaseki said. He lamented that "Forcing electricity consumers to pay for services they did not enjoy with estimated bills is tantamount to corruption, which the Buhari-led government is committed to nipping in the bud." Obaseki wondered why Nigerians in Borno and Kaduna states are celebrating uninterrupted power supply yet, Edo people are in unending darkness. The governor, further said that much as he is not a believer in conspiracy theories, he is however constrained to believe that BEDC is on a mission to sabotage the developmental efforts of his administration. "There can be no better time to enjoy electricity than during the Christmas holiday and only an enemy of progress will make Edo people spend the holidays in darkness," the governor emphasised. He expressed his regrets over the unnecessary sufferings associated with celebrating the holiday period in BEDC-induced darkness and assured that his administration will continue to work for better deals across all sectors of the state.
