Omoedeki:It is quite economical. There will be reduction in the price of the feeds as the fish continue to grow. The logic is that when the fish is small they tend to consume quality feeds which is quite costly but as times goes by there will be reduction in the cost of feeds. By the time they reach 3 and half month to four month, the cost per kg should not be more than 250 naira per kg |
dy4life:All things cannot be equal. All other things being equal, there is no fixed KG to attain within those month. However, if the seed is alright and you are able to manage your farm very well, then be expecting an AVERGAGE of 2.0 to 2.5KG in 6months. 6months is a very long period of time so getting 1KG plus is not only a waste of money but also a waste of time. 1KG fish is not a fish at all, it is called smallest here...small start from 1.2 to 1.3 KG....thus, 20/21/22 pieces of fish must weigh 25KG |
Ttalk:This is better. Not everybody understand abbreviation. However, comparisons of FCR among different species may be of little significance unless the feeds involved are of similar quality and suitability. |

Ttalk:Yes |
mercylicious:A month old fish should be able to pick 2mm local feeds also known as indomie size. Peradventure, they cannot pick it you can either continue with 1.2mm or 1.5mm because both has 56% and 48% respectively crude protein. Please, do not use 2mm coppens because it has 42% and 45% which is quite low considering their age. |
sosolid007:The kind of feed mills that I am talking about here does not float. Don't get me wrong, there are some local feeds that floats however research have shown that they do not produce the kind of result the sinkable local feeds produced. I have one feed mill here that does floating local feeds but at the creation of the feed mill, a lot of people patronize them but when they tried it and did not get result they had to switch back to sinkable local feeds. Of course, I found out why they did not get the same result like the sinkable local feeds, I learnt that most of the ingredient (soya, gnc, maize etc) go through boiling process before they are used to make the floating feeds. It all implies that all the nutritional value must have been extracted out to make the local floating feeds. To reduce wastage when using local sinkable feeds, you need to apply on a spot feeding method and take your time to feed them gently and stop when you know that they have reached their saturation point. |
@sosolid007: You are welcome. 25 x 40 should be able to accommodate 1000 pieces of fish but I will advise you to under stock rather than over stock. Every one is clamoring for change and as such change has indeed happened in this country so also change has happened in grow out catfish production, it is no longer changing to local feeds at 1 and half month, it is now between 25- 27 days maximum. You only need to feed your fingerlings with 0.5mm, 0.8mm and 1.2mm before switching to local feeds which start from 2mm (indomie size). I have used both feeds in the past but I still prefer coppens to Ziggler any time any day. You don't need to get any tanks. You only need to channel the water using pipes to each of the pond from the borehole. You don't need to get any filter for the borehole. As regards hatching, Robonski will attend to that for you. I don't make feeds but you can easily do local feeds at any nearest feedmills |
Jwhizzy:I wonder |
Chikote:You can say that again but there is no way I can prove that to you. Just told u what I did. Daughter listen to music that I downloaded on it. |
adaweezy:Same here. You won't believe that I didn't use it for a day. I gave it to my two year old daughter as a toy |

edan15:There is a solution to your problem. check my handle and contact me through Whatsapp. I will give you the stuff free of charge. It's traditional though. Before calling me sca.m, check my input so far on nairaland. Thanks. |
@jcross19: next time, just report the post. I just did that now and it has been removed. Choose Rule 8. It will go offline immediately. Please edit the post you quote. Thanks, |
very funny |
Unsad:Fat? Did I hear you say Fat? You will be the only one carrying him |
Ttalk:If you have access to flow through, you can pump water on them. I will advise you to do two things: 1) Never overfeed them in the evening. Just give them little feed. They tend to be more active in the morning than in the evening. 2) Feed them before 5PM so that the feed can digest on time |
korel9:You didn't offend me. Just one of those things. |
robonski15:Well said. You are welcome, my brother. |
korel9:What is that suppose to mean? What confirmation do you want? You think I just came here to write what I don't know about |
There are two additional ways in which you can treat your fish if you observe that they are dying. 1) Get bitter leaf (ewuro), it should be as many as possible. Put little water inside the leaf and squeezed it very well (gbo dada) in such a way that all the vitality will be extracted during squeezing. After which you are to drain the water in the pond, leave little water to cover their body and pour the squizzed water into the pond. You are to leave them for 12 hours before feeding 2) Another one is to get formalin (can be purchase from any store that sells chemical for weeds), you will mix with water depending on how big your pond is, you then sprinkle it inside your pond. PLEASE note you don't need to drain your water before applying but, make sure water does not enter and water does not go out. You are to feed them after 12 hours. No matter the nature of their sickness, it will flush out the disease. |
Greatest OSUities. Congrats bro. |

It is close to 537,600 but the bank is still going to charge VAT as a standard procedure |
saddek04:The numbers stocked cannot give you the total weight or tonnes however, what they eat can do so. For example if what you stocked in respective of the total numbers eat 3 tonnes of feeds which is 3000KG then, be expecting 2300KG or 2.3 tonnes. The remaining 700KG will be waste. It may or may not be up to 700KG, all depends on how smart you can feed. |
rainycash:250k |
WhoBeThisMan:Price varies. Price is high in Lagos compare to Ogun state where the price is relatively low. Melange should not be more than 400 Naira per kg |
Darvel:Still available |
Mayany:Yes, they eat themselves. You can drain the water every month. |
Mayany:You need to change water once in a week if you are using a stagnant method. You can be pumping water at least three times in a week. This will help them to digest the feed on time thereby helping them boosting their eating habit. To reduce mortality rate, immediately you notice that two dropped(dead) and float in your pond, and you also notice that some of them hang on the water, you need to drain the water and treat them with salt and wood ash. Feed them after 48 hours. |
saddek04:I rear my fish for 6months. I start using finisher when they are 4 and half months to reduce cost. However, I don't advise anyone to use local fish. I will rather reduce the FM % to minimal than use local fish. You can't compare processed and imported stuff with enough additive with what they source for locally. Some of the local fish people use can make u vomit if you smell it. It's just so disgusting unless of course you can get those small fish ; we call it yoyo in Yoruba language (sorry, i no sabi d english name) |
