Nairaland / General / Father's Day 2024: Origin, History And Everything You Should Know About This Day by Abaga001: 11:23am On May 06
Father’s Day, marking Sunday, June 16, 2024, is approaching fast! Delve into inspiring quotes for your card, explore delightful recipes, and discover engaging activities to celebrate. Uncover the touching tale behind the creation of Father’s Day, a story filled with significance and emotion.

Why We Celebrate Father’s Day

Father’s Day is a special occasion dedicated to celebrating and honoring the invaluable contributions of men who have embraced the vital role of fatherhood. It’s a day to express gratitude towards fathers and father figures, including uncles and grandfathers, for the sacrifices they make, their commitment to nurturing and guiding children, and their unwavering devotion to their families.

When is Father’s Day?

Father’s Day is observed every year on the third Sunday of June in various countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, India, and several others globally.

2025- Sunday, June 15

2026- Sunday, June 21

2027- Sunday, June 20

Many countries celebrate this holiday at other times of the year. In Australia, for example, Father’s Day is held on the first Sunday of September; in Norway, Sweden, and Finland, on the second Sunday in November; and in some Catholic countries, on March 19 (St. Joseph’s Day).

Who “Invented” Father’s Day?

Much like the origins of Mother’s Day, the history of Father’s Day in America extends far beyond just cards and gifts.

The inaugural Father’s Day observance took place in Fairmont, West Virginia, on July 5, 1908, following a devastating mining accident that claimed the lives of hundreds of men.

Forum Games / Former Eyimba FC Coach, Ex-heartland FC Player… Meet Super Eagles New Coach Fini by Abaga001: 12:56pm On Apr 30
Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, has appointed former Enyimba FC coach Finidi George as their new head coach, succeeding Portuguese manager Jose Peseiro.

George, a former Champions League winner with Ajax in 1995, served as an assistant to Peseiro for the past 20 months, including during the Africa Cup of Nations final where Nigeria lost to Ivory Coast.

He initially took charge on an interim basis for two friendlies in March, leading the team to a victory over Ghana and a loss to Mali.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed George’s appointment, citing his extensive experience and understanding of the team and local players.

George, a member of Nigeria’s Class of 1994, faces the immediate challenge of guiding the Super Eagles in crucial FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin.

His goal is to strike a balance between the team’s formidable defense and its need to create scoring opportunities, given the wealth of attacking talent at his disposal.

“We knew had been with the team for a while, he understands the team and the players and it would have been foolish to bring someone from outside with no time to prepare them for the qualifiers,” the source said.

Education / 2024 UTME Results: Over 1.4m Scored Below 200, Only 8k Got 300 And Above by Abaga001: 8:25am On Apr 30
The 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results show a few notable trends.

In this report, Crispng.com examines the trends.

Firstly, out of the total 1,940,000 candidates who sat for the exam, 94.97% had their results released, indicating a high level of completion and compliance.

However, a significant proportion, 3.33%, had their results withheld, suggesting potential issues with these candidates’ performances or adherence to examination protocols.

In terms of performance, the distribution of scores is quite telling. Only a minuscule fraction, 0.5%, achieved scores of 300 and above, highlighting the rigorous standards of the examination.

Similarly, while 4.2% managed scores of 250 and above, a substantial 76% scored below 200, indicating a considerable portion of candidates may need additional support or resources to improve their academic performance.

The fact that 24% scored 200 and above signifies a decent portion of candidates meeting or surpassing the minimum threshold for academic competence.

Education / Yahaya Bello: What To Know About American International School Attended By Ex-ko by Abaga001: 1:16pm On Apr 29
Ola Olukoyede, head of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), revealed that ex-Kogi governor Yahaya Bello withdrew $720,000 from state funds for his child’s school fees at American International School, Abuja (AISA) ahead of his tenure’s end.

The transaction, conducted through a bureau de change, occurred as Bello anticipated leaving office. Olukoyede emphasized the impropriety of a governor siphoning public funds for personal use, particularly in a financially struggling state like Kogi.

He clarified that he inherited the investigation and did not instigate it.

EFCC agents attempted to apprehend Bello over an alleged N80 billion fraud, prompting a standoff at his Abuja residence. Governor Usman Ododo’s visit coincided with the EFCC’s operation, leading to Bello’s reported rescue and subsequent declaration as wanted by the anti-graft agency.

The Nigeria Immigration Service also placed him on a watchlist. The EFCC accused Bello, alongside others, of diverting N80.2 billion from Kogi’s government funds.

“A sitting governor, because he knew he was leaving office, moved money directly from the government to bureau de change and used it to pay his child’s school fee in advance,” the EFCC boss said.

“Over $720,000 in anticipation that he was going to leave the government house. In a poor state like Kogi, you want me to close my eyes under the guise of ‘I’m being used’. Used by who? At this stage of my life.”

Here are some key things to know about AISA:

TV/Movies / Full List: Multichoice Increases Dstv, Gotv Subscription Prices… See New Rates by Abaga001: 10:36am On Apr 25
MultiChoice Nigeria is set to raise prices across its DStv packages for the third consecutive year, beginning May 1, 2024.

This move follows similar increases in 2022 and 2023, when subscribers increased by 16.3% to 18.6%, citing economic hardships as a primary reason, with the company justifying the hike as necessary to maintain quality services in the face of challenging economic conditions.

“Due to the various economic challenges impacting our business operations, we have had to review the price of our packages to continue delighting our customers with great entertainment, anytime and anywhere.

“MultiChoice acknowledges the difficult economic climate and thus kept the increase at the lowest possible point whilst ensuring sustainability and provision of quality services.”

However, this year’s new subscription fees were communicated to customers via an email titled “Price Adjustment on DStv and GOtv Packages” on Wednesday, April 24, 2024. Below is an excerpt from the email message that subscribers received.
