Liverpool are trying to lure James Milner to Anfield by telling him he could be the next Steven Gerrard.

FIFA has confirmed that goal-line technology will be used at next summer’s World Cup in Brazil.

The governing body of world football has already licensed two systems – Hawkeye and Goalref – but has now invited other providers to submit tenders.

Goal-line technology was employed for the first time at last year’s Club World Cup in Japan but FIFA will now roll it out during this summer’s Confederations Cup, as well as the 2014 World Cup.

FIFA said in a statement: “After a successful implementation of Goal-Line Technology (GLT) at the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan in December 2012, FIFA has decided to use GLT at the FIFA Confederations Cup Brazil 2013 and 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.

“The aim is to use GLT in order to support the match officials and to install a system in all stadia, pending the successful installation, and pre-mat“With different technologies on the market, FIFA has launched a tender today, setting out the technical requirements for the two forthcoming competitions in Brazil.”

HawkEye involves the use of cameras, while GoalRef is a more scientific system, involving a low-frequency magnetic field surrounding the goal and an electronic circuit in the ball, with goal confirmation being transmitted in a fraction of a second to a watch worn by the referee.

A FIFA decision on the preferred provider is due to be made in early April.

Roberto Mancini has claimed that he is currently “the best manager in England” despite Manchester City trailing Manchester United by 12 points as they attempt to retain the championship. Napoli face the prospect of heavy sanctions after the Italian football federation (FIGC) confirmed that it is investigating allegations of match-fixing at the club.

Former goalkeeper Matteo Gianello, now a free agent, has been accused of attempting to fix the outcome of Napoli’s Serie A match at Sampdoria in 2010, with defenders Gianluca Grava and Paolo Cannavaro standing accused of failing to report the incident having been approached.

Napoli have also been deferred as the club involved at the time, and could face a points deduction.

“The FIGC can confirm that, following an investigation by the public prosecutor of Naples, the federal prosecutor will open disciplinary proceedings in relation to the Sampdoria-Napoli match of May 16, 2010,” reads a statement on the federation’s official website.

“Matteo Gianello, Napoli’s former player, and Silvio Giusti, Napoli’s former coach, are accused of violating Article 7 (sections 1, 2 and 5) of the sporting code of justice. “Between them, they are accused of attempting to alter the outcome of the match to secure a victory for Sampdoria in exchange for money.

“[They are] also accused of having approached colleagues Paolo Cannavaro and Gianluca Grava, from whom they received a refusal.

“But Cannavaro and Grava stand accused of violating Article 7 (section 7), in failing to disclose the approach to the federal prosecutor.”

John Obi Mikel wants Chelsea to bypass their habitual winter struggle and maintain their role as the Premier League pacesetters when they face Manchester United on Sunday.
