Democrats just flipped another Republican congressional seat in Maine. Another heartache for the racist pig and his blind followers. By the time the final counts in California comes in, the Democrats would have gained about 40 congressional seats and some clowns here are saying that's not a Blue Wave. Can't wait till January when the new Congress is sworn in to see the demented old bigot lose what's left of his sanity. |

I think she should be given one more chance because she worked hard and she was a successful Speaker before. The main disadvantage to her is that she's 78 year old. ONE more term as a Speaker and the Democrats can look for new leader. |

The press is not suppose to like any president because they are the Fourth Estate and Trump constant lies and demagoguery has to be pointed out. Appleyard: More babel. Anybody who claim to be a scholar can come forward to give his own thought on any word or phrase, but such independent definitions doesn't denigrate from the fact that the word or phrase concerned has its natural meaning to begin with.
Just as someone can define a knife to be a tool for cutting through food items, another scholar can come forward to define it as a tool used in killing people during a fight. While that is true, does it mean that the purpose of using a knife is strictly for killing? This is the mindset of the scholars you quoted, and also the idiotic postulations the Kid president of France was trying to pass on to the US president, and I find that very stupid and unintelligent.
Macron fails to know that when a word or phrase has a compound meaning, you cannot use it exclusively or try to make it an absolute. Let that sink in.
While Patriotism has been around for 150 years before the use of nationalism, the latter's original meaning naturally correlate with that of Patriotism. Nationalism came into popularity in the early 19th century, and it originally means strong devotion and loyalty to one's country.
It was not until the 20th century when matters of political sovereignty and battle for self-determination takes central stage that some scholars started introducing different conceptual definitions to the original meaning of the term nationalism. But it never denies the fact that it shares same original idea with Patriotism.
Therefore, the assumption that fighting for the right of one's country is radical nationalism is, I must say, sheer fallacy, baseless and puerile.
You forget to mention that the Macron you are talking about is the president of a country that thinks its language and culture is better than all others. I guess you know nothing about the French policy of Association and the Policy of Assimilation used by colonial France on Africa. All colonial rule are rooted under the principles of radical nationalism, if we are to go by that term.
France and Britain are grandpatrons of nationalism, but i guess you don't know that because, when liberals are involved, nationalism can only mean "white nationalism", especially where Trump is the object of discussion. Pathetic thinking.
Every nation on earth has a presumably notion of nationalism, whether you like it or not. The Germans will forever see themselves as the most innovative people on earth, the British think they live a way of life that is unrivaled anywhere in the world, while the Jews think they are the most perculial set of people on the planet, even as the United States thinks its democracy and way of life trumps all others in the world, and so will do anything necessary to project the American dream even to the shores of other nations. All these are driven by Nationalistic ideas interwoven in Patriotism.
So for Macron to attempt lecturing the leader of another country about nationalism, when himself preside over one of the world's most nationalistic countries, makes him a hypocrite, or simply because he doesn't understand a jot of what the two terms actually meant from their original usage.
You can take that to the bank. Garbage as usual from a racist pig Pom Pom waiving cheerleader. Trump called himself a Nationalist and every decent American knows that's a subliminal message to the Klans , Aryan members, White Nationalists , Storm Troopers and other vile degenerates that supports him. You can write your junk all you want on Nairaland, the Bottom line is you do not matter when the rubber meets the road. |

wirinet: Egocentricity is indeed a huge mental disease. You have world leaders, writers, scientists and intellectuals define the difference between nationalism and patriotism, citing the dangers of nationalism, and someone who has no achievement in his life will term them ignorant. Are you even qualified to wipe the ground Macron walks on?
Here are other definition of Nationalism by other intellectual greats; “Nationalism is not to be confused with patriotism. Both words are normally used in so vague a way that any definition is liable to be challenged, but one must draw a distinction between them, since two different and even opposing ideas are involved. By ‘patriotism’ I mean devotion to a particular place and a particular way of life, which one believes to be the best in the world but has no wish to force on other people. Patriotism is of its nature defensive, both militarily and culturally. Nationalism, on the other hand, is inseparable from the desire for power. The abiding purpose of every nationalist is to secure more power and more prestige, not for himself but for the nation or other unit in which he has chosen to sink his own individuality.” ― George Orwell
Nationalism is an infantile disease. It is the measles of mankind.- Albert Einstein Read more at: https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/albert_einstein_107012
Patriotism is when love of your own people comes first; nationalism, when hate for people other than your own comes first. - Charles de Gaulle Read more at: https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/charles_de_gaulle_111702
even Merriam-Webster dictionary quoted by obixcel makes a distinction between Patriotism and Nationalism;
These two words may have shared a distinct sense in the 19th century, but they appear to have grown apart since. Or rather, it would be more accurate to say that only nationalism has grown apart, since the meaning of patriotism has remained largely unchanged. There are still obvious areas of overlap: we define patriotism as “love for or devotion to one’s country” and nationalism in part as “loyalty and devotion to a nation.” But the definition of nationalism also includes “exalting one nation above all others and placing primary emphasis on promotion of its culture and interests as opposed to those of other nations or supranational groups.” This exclusionary aspect is not shared by patriotism. -https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/patriotism-vs-nationalism
Trump himself acknowledged the negative connotation of the word nationalism when he described himself as a nationalist;
I understand that IPOB are Nationalists, that is why hatred of others take precedence to love of themselves. It makes no difference what Trump a*s lickers on Nairaland says, every decent and rational Americans know he's a White Nationalist and him confirming it by calling himself a Nationalist surprises no rational American. The bootlickers here can spout their Basura but when the chips are down, not single one of them counts. |

And I must say I unequivocally agree with all you said concerning sub saharan African countries especially Nigeria. You see until I left Nigeria I never really knew how bad, I mean rotten things were. In Nigeria people are so used to suffering that they have come to accept it as a way of life, like that is how things are meant to be. We lack even the most basic of amenities. We suffer miserably without any respite in the horizon.
