The African Democratic Congress, ADC, has attributed its poor performance in Saturday’s by-elections to widespread violence, vote buying, and irregularities allegedly perpetrated under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress, APC.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the exercise was marred by incidents that undermined the credibility of the polls.
The ADC alleged that in some states, about 300 armed thugs were arrested on election day, while several polling units were cancelled due to ballot box snatching and voter intimidation.
It also cited reports of vote buying, including the arrest of a suspect with N25.9 million in Kaduna and cases where election officials were implicated in inducements.
The party further expressed concern over the failure of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, in some states and questioned the competence and sincerity of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
“These by-elections are a dress rehearsal for 2027. If violence, vote buying, intimidation, and collusion with security forces become the new normal, Nigerians and the international community must brace themselves,” the statement read.

While LP was fighting hard in the law court to ensure that its candidates in the Saturday election are uploaded in the INEC Portal, the National Leader of LP, Peter Obi had already lost hope and had started campaigning for ADC candidates due to what he termed “unavailability of LP Candidates”. What a terrible shameless leader! A hopeless leader can never give anyone else hope.
Today, LP had won in court and court had directed INEC to upload all LP Candidates with immediate effect.
The All Progressives Congress has dismissed claims that a Canadian court labelled the party a terrorist organisation.
In a statement issued on Friday, APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, clarified that the court made no pronouncement on terrorism in its ruling.
This follows reports by some media outlets on Thursday (excluding The PUNCH) alleging that the Canadian court had declared both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party as terrorist organisations.
APC called on its members, supporters, and Nigerians at large to disregard the reports, describing them as false and misleading.
President Tinubu has launched a platform offering a support package for staff members, both academic and non-academic, at tertiary institutions. This initiative provides an interest-free loan of up to 10 million naira, with a repayment period of up to five years, including a one-year grace period before payments begin.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasizes that the TISSF exemplifies the Renewed Hope initiative in action. He further stated that it reflects President Tinubu's dedication to education and his support for all its aspects.
We think that the President and his team-and we just exchanged with him- have worked hard to stabilise the economy and you cannot improve an economy unless it’s stable, so he has to be given the credit for the stability of the economy.
The reforms have been in the right direction, what is needed next is growth, we now need to grow the economy and we need to put in a social safety net, so that people who are feeling the pinch of the reforms can also have some support to be able to weather the hardship.
So that’s the next step. How do we build a social safety net to help Nigerians cushion the hardship they are feeling and then how do we grow the economy so we can create more jobs and put more money in people’s pockets, these are issues that we discussed with Mr. President.

The Federal Government, De-Sadal Nigeria Limited, and China Liancai Petroleum Investment Holdings Limited are set to commence the construction of a $60 bn gas and 4,000-kilometre high-speed rail project in Nigeria.
This was disclosed when the consortium presented proof of funds to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, alongside the Ministers of Transportation, Sa’idu Alkali and State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, among others, in Abuja on Tuesday.
Chief Executive Officer of De-Sadal Nigeria Limited, Samuel Uko, who spoke on behalf of the consortium, said the first phase of the project would cover four major cities in Nigeria, which are Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Port Harcourt.
“Today, with our partners, I have just presented the official approval form for the project. The fund is coming from the Asian Development Investment Bank. And it is to cover the first phase of the project that cuts across four major cities in Nigeria.
“The rail line is from Lagos to Abuja, to Kano, and from Abuja to Port Harcourt. So this is a very great work that the government have done. The federal government of Nigeria, through the ICRC, approved the outline business case. And the next step now was for us to submit the approval form to the government, which we have just done. So I believe in the shortest possible time, Nigeria will start enjoying a high-speed rail in Nigeria.”
While speaking on the amount involved, he said a total of $60bn had been approved for the project.
“Today, $60 billion approval fund has just been submitted to the government through our financial and technical partners. The first phase of the project is $55 billion. So the fund is ready, and the country is ready to move forward with this project, ” he added.
On the timeline for the completion of the project when started, Uko said, “Well, the 1,600 kilometres that covers the four major cities of the country will take us 36 months to build. But we won’t wait until the 36th month. For instance, from Lagos to Lokoja, we will cut across about six states. But when we get to the second, third state, the people from the first two states will start enjoying the speed train.
He explained that the project would also involve gas development to meet the power needs of the rail network. “The raw material for power is gas. So we have to develop the gas aspect to be able to access more gas to power the high-speed rail project,” he said.
Speaking, the SGF said the submitted proof of funds would undergo scrutiny.
“We want to establish the real amount of money that is available. We don’t doubt them, but that is the normal procedure that the government takes when huge sums of money are involved in such transactions.
“This is a country that is business friendly especially under the administration of President Bola Tinubu,” he stated.
Minister of Transportation, Sa’idu Alkali, said the project aligns with the ministry’s mandate to provide safe, secure, and affordable transportation.
He said, “We have submitted the outline business case to ICRC. They have approved it. This is a step towards preparing the full business case to be submitted to ICRC before we take it to the Federal Executive Council,” he said.
