PoliticsIn 2021, FG Engaged US Firm To Recover Illicit Funds ‘Linked’ To Atiku by abc115(op): 9:21pm On Sep 23, 2022
The federal government, in 2021, engaged the services of a US firm to recover illicit funds allegedly traced to the account of Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The firm was also contracted to retrieve such funds from the accounts of Ayodele Fayose, former Ekiti governor, and Musiliu Obanikoro, a former senator.

In a memo marked HAGF/AABIOLA/USA/2021/VOL.1/1 — and dated May 31, 2021 — Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation (AGF), engaged Akib Abiola as the lead recovery agent to recover the funds on behalf of the federal government.

In the letter of engagement, Malami said the stolen assets are currently under forfeiture proceedings.

“Following the proposal submitted by Mr. Akib Abiola. (hereinafter “Lead Recovery Agent”) vide letter dated 9 March and 6 May 2021 respectively, please be informed that the federal government of Nigeria has engaged you to recover the funds traced to the accounts located in the United States of America and belonging to the individuals listed in paragraph 2 of this engagement letter (hereinafter illicit funds),” the letter reads.

“The scope of the engagement is for the recovery of the illicit funds traced to Mr. Atiku Abubakar, Mr. Ayo Fayose, And Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro in the United States of America.”

Abiola was given the responsibility of “instituting an action severally or jointly against Atiku Abubakar, his family and associates towards recovering the stolen assets due to the FGN from the proceeds of crime currently under a forfeiture proceeding at the United States”.

Other responsibilities include “identifying and providing information to the undersigned (Malami) about any assets subject or likely to be subject to forfeiture proceedings in the United States of America, limited to Mr. Ayo Fayose (former governor of Ekiti States) and Mr. Musiliu Obanikoro (former minister of state for defence and former High commissioner to Ghana)”.

The lead recovery agent was also mandated to negotiate settlements, sign letters, and agreements, and work in collaboration with the AGF for the purpose of recovering the funds.

The AGF noted that “where lead recovery agent and its partner solicitors 1dentifies any other assets (financial or otherwise) which may be pursued as a recovery prospect, it shall bring such information to the attention of the undersigned (Malami) for express approval before proceeding with any legal processes towards the recovery and repatriation of such asset”.

FIVE PERCENT LEGAL FEES

According to the AGF, the lead recovery agent is entitled to a “success fee” amounting to five percent of “actual recoveries made and remitted to the designated accounts” of the federal government.

“This fee shall be paid in respect of cash recovery within sixty (60) days of the collective receipt of same by the federal government of Nigeria,” the letter reads.

“The aforesaid success fee shall be deemed to cover all the expenses incurred by the lead recovery agent and any agents or associates contracted by your firm in the course of its engagement. For the avoidance of doubt, the federal government of Nigeria will not enter separate terms of engagement with such agents, associates, attorneys or sub-contractors.”

Bola Tinubu, Presidential candidate of the All progressives congress
Share
Bola Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2023 general election, is expected to succeed incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) has said in a new country report.

The EIU said in 2019 that Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), would win that year’s election. In 2015, it predicted victory for Muhammadu Buhari of the APC.

In its latest report ahead of the next year’s presidential election, it said the chances of Atiku in winning the poll would be significantly affected by the current internal wrangling in the PDP and the growing popularity of Peter Obi, the candidate of Labour Party (LP), in the South-East, which is traditionally the powerhouse of the PDP.

Tinubu, a former governor of Lagos State, defeated several APC leaders to emerge the party’s presidential candidate in May.

Most of his opponents stepped down for him just before the commencement of the primary election, while other aspirants including Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo went ahead to test their popularity with Tinubu, but lost.

However, in recent months, Tinubu’s choice of Kashim Shettima, a former governor of Borno State and a fellow Muslim, as his running mate has continued to generate controversy in the APC and across the country ahead of next year’s election.

Social media video from Russia's land borders with several countries shows long lines of traffic trying to leave the country on the day after President Vladimir Putin announced a "partial mobilization."

There were queues at border crossings into Kazakhstan, Georgia and Mongolia. One video showed dozens of vehicles lining up at the Zemo Larsi/Verkhny Lars checkpoint on the Georgia-Russia border overnight Wednesday. That line appears to have grown longer Thursday. One video showed a long queue stretching into the mountains behind the crossing, with a man commenting that it was five to six kilometers long.

Another posted Thursday showed long lines at the Khaykhta crossing into Mongolia.

One man spoke over video recorded at the Troitsk crossing into Kazakhstan, where dozens of cars were lined up Thursday morning. "This is Troitsk, queues of trucks and passenger vehicles ... you can't see the start or the end of this queue ... everyone, everyone is fleeing Russia, all sorts."

A senior Kazakh official, Maulen Ashimbaev, had said Kazakhstan could not restrict the entry of Russian citizens into the country, Russian state news agency RIA Novosti reported earlier Thursday. But Ashimbaev, the speaker of the upper house of the Kazakh parliament, said that in order to obtain a residence permit, applicants must have a set of documents that comply with the law.

It is difficult to compare the current flow of traffic to the average in the absence of official data.

Flights from Russia to countries that do not require visas continue to be very busy and frequently sold out. A search on the Aviasales website showed there were no seats available on Moscow-Istanbul one-way economy flights until Sunday — with the lowest price almost $2,900.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Thursday dismissed reports of airports crowded with people trying to leave Russia following the announcement, calling it "exaggeration" and "fake news."

PoliticsLagos State Consumer Protection Agency - _A Cut Above The Rest by abc115(op): 1:36am On Sep 19, 2022
*COPIED and _SHARED!_*

*Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency - _A Cut Above The Rest!_*

*Indeed, Lagos is _working!_*

On Thursday September 8th, 2022, I strolled into the Ikeja City Mall, situated along Obafemi Awolowo Way (Alausa) Ikeja-Lagos, with the intention of getting myself an earpiece.

I browsed various stores but immediately I saw "Slot", home to phones, computers and various communication tools, I felt comfortable, believing I would get what I went for.

In no time, I settled for a bone conduction headphone with a ₦30,000.00 price tag, and promptly paid. I took the item home, charged it, and forgot about it.

The next day, I decided to call my wife and gleefully intimate her about my newly acquired gadgetry only for her to tell me she could not hear me. I turned the headphone over and tried to see if I did not do something right. I read the Manual again and saw I did everything right. Still, the item did not work.

The next day, Friday, September 9th, at about 1pm, I went back to Slot and complained about my experience. The workers took the piece, tested it and came to the same conclusion. They, too, could not hear themselves.
They told me I had two choices. Either I picked another item of the same make, or settle for another headphone with a commensurate price tag.

I explained that I live in Abuja, and would not settle for the same product. What if I get back to base and it malfunctions again? The Store Manager, a lady, responded they have offices there (in Abuja), and that those ones would always attend to me should I experience the same problem. I was dumbstruck. I could not believe she actually uttered that statement. In effect, I have no other business other than spending my precious time visiting Slot office(s) and repeatedly complaining about a bad product? I also did not want any other product they had on offer in their shop and therefore requested a refund. The Store Manager was vehement and kept saying Slot maintains a "No Refunds" policy, insisting I picked another item.

This is where it gets Interesting. Unbeknownst to me and everyone around, a gentleman in a simple light-blue kaftan, worn over navy-blue loafers, and looking dapper with his fitting eyewear, had been listening to my back and forth with the Store Manager. He asked me to narrate what happened and I did. He said there's nothing like "No Refunds'' policy and that Consumers must always get value for the products they procure.
He introduced himself as Mr Afolabi Solebo, the General Manager (GM) of Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA), and insisted I must be reimbursed the full amount paid.

The Store Manager told him that would not be possible and Mr Solebo (now turned my Rescuer-in-Chief), maintained that if the refund was not effected, he would seal the Store. The workers thought he was joking. Even I, the Main Act in the midst of all the drama, could not believe what was unfurling before my eyes.

The GM kept maintaining his position and the Store Manager started making frantic calls for the next 40 minutes; shuffling in and out the store, offering no solution. She urged me to speak with her boss on the phone at some point, but Mr Solebo insisted I should not speak with anyone. He said companies could get away with the 'No Refunds' nonsense elsewhere in Nigeria, but not in Lagos, where he is operating under the mandate given his Agency by the indefatigable Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

90 minutes went by, and still no answer.

The GM called on his team to come seal up the place. In a jiffy, some 8 personnel (with one holding a chain) appeared from nowhere. I was gobsmacked! How they managed to get to the scene within such a short space of time, was quite astonishing!!!

Mr Solebo sought everyone's attention, introduced himself, and apprised them of what happened; noting that Consumers indeed have rights and must always insist on getting value for their money. He politely informed them that the place was in the process of being sealed.
Customers started moving out of the store and the Store Manager kept running helter-skelter, pleading with Mr Solebo, whilst at the same time, trying to inform her boss(es) via the phone, about the fact that the LASCOPA GM was not joking!

To cut a long story short, the Ikeja City Hall Manager waded in, spoke on the phone with the Slot Management, and a truce was reached. He got the company to agree that my refund would be effected within 24 hours (as opposed to the 48 hours they had offered after much pressure).

My Rescuer-in-Chief was not done. He insisted Slot must give an undertaking to that effect, to which the hitherto recalcitrant Store Manager eventually yielded; scribbling the same behind my purchase receipt.

Within a space of 2 hrs, I got an alert and my money was refunded fully! I promptly called Mr Solebo and thanked him profusely. (He had earlier told me to let him know if the refund was not done within the time frame spelt out in the undertaking the company gave).

My point in writing this piece is two-fold. First, to let Consumers know they can insist on their rights whenever they feel they are being shafted by companies they patronise, or perchance, they are not getting value for items purchased. They should try and live by the creed of Arnold Palmer, the charismatic American golfer (September 10, 1929 - September 25, 2016), who enjoined people to: "Always make a total effort, even when the odds are against you".

Also, I want to give kudos to the LASCOPA Team under the able leadership of Mr Afolabi Solebo. His resolve and stoic stance (for more than 2 and a half hours), in insisting that the right thing must be done, is stuff true leaders, who know their onions, could only make manifest.

In conclusion, I remember the words of a renowned English Essayist, Samuel Johnson (September 18, 1709 - December 13, 1784); "If your determination is fixed, I do not counsel you to despair. Few things are impossible with diligence and skill. Great works are performed not by strength, but perseverance". Also, in one of the treatises put out by another popular English writer and Religious Thinker, William Penn (October 14, 1644 - July 30, 1718); "Patience and Diligence, like Faith, remove mountains"

For me, two quotes above, summarise the Essential Afolabi Solebo and his dedicated LASCOPA Team.

Indeed, Lagos is working.

Other States should take a cue.

PoliticsBode George: PDP May Lose 2023 Elections by abc115(op): 1:53am On Sep 16, 2022
Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Deputy National Chairman Chief Olabode George has warned that the opposition party may lose next year’s presidential election to crisis.

He said the way and manner the protracted leadership crisis is resolved will determine the fate of the platform in 2023 polls.

George, warned that PDP may be polarised and fragmented into the Northern Peoples Democratic Party (NPDP) and Southern Peoples Democratic Party (SPDP), if the national chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, does not resign.

He said:”Let me declare categorically that the positions of presidential candidate and national chairman cannot come from the same zone.”

George, a Naval Commodore, spoke with reporters in Lagos on the consequence of politics of exclusion and inequality in the party.

Accompanied by his wife, Rolly, Senator Kofoworola Akerele-Bucknor and other party chieftains, the party elder advised Ayu to honour his promise to step down, if the presidential candidate emerges from the North.

He lamented that PDP has violated the principle of inclusion because the candidate, chairman and the campaign director are from the North.

George said it is desirable that the position of the national chairman should come to the Southwest to give the region a sense of inclusion, belonging, equity and justice.

To the party elder, PDP is facing a ‘clear and present danger’ that might thwart the window of opportunity for winning.
He said flawed personal interests are being sustained at the expense of party unity and cohesion.

According to him: ”We should not allow any sentiment – ethnic or religious to divide us. Unfortunately, with what we are presently witnessing, our party may lose the next presidential election if we continue to disregard or fail to address the feeling and grievances of ‘alienation’ being presently experienced by the entire Southern population of this great country. If this issue is dismissed, we cannot expect votes from them.

”We should be seen to pursue noble causes and not ethnic agenda. Ethnic groups in this country are at the precipice of collapse. It has never been this bad historically and Nigerians are waiting for us to change the situation of things for the better.

”Until this party returns to the founding fathers’ principles of unity, with equity, fairness and justice being the pedestal for any political decision taken in this party; and ensuring broad-mindedness to accommodate the concerns of all zones in this country PDP becomes vulnerable to disaster in the 2023 elections. Unless we are united, with equity, fairness and justice, our party may be fragmented before 2023.

”In May this year, we elected our presidential candidate in the person of HE. Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, setting aside the principle of rotation as enshrined in the constitution of our party in the interest of peace and unity of our party. Today, we are in a situation in which our National Chairman is from the same zone as our presidential candidate.

”Some people are insisting that there is nothing wrong with this present arrangement. Some have argued that this happened during Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration, where the candidate and the national chairman were from the same zone.

”Let the truth be told, there are remarkable differences in the scenario then and now. Then we had the leader of the party who was then a sitting president from the South and the candidate was from the North.

”In addition, the National Chairman, Dr Ahmadu Ali, was then on his way out. Today we have no sitting President from our party in Aso Villa so, that argument falls flat. We need to stop playing games and being zombified.”

I really feel pity for BAT. I wonder how his urchins sleep at night knowing that bad news awaits them each morning from now till Feb 25. It's such a bad time to be a BATist.
When they listen to the news, they keep hearing about Obi & patriotic Nigerians who want to take back their country.
To make matters worse, northerners are teaching the so called sophisticated master strategist practical lessons in Politics 101.
The only thing left for him is to minimize his losses by reducing the number of bullion vans he intends to deploy for election financing, vote buying, crowd renting & campaigns.
He was banking on northern governors like Ganduje,El Rufai etc & other heavy weight politicians across the country to support him without knowing that most of them are only out for a share of his loots while acting like they care about his lifelong ambition.
Even rigging will be highly minizeed because of BVAS.
The thought of engaging in vote buying is equally a risky proposition judging by the Osun election experience where people collect the money & vote their preferred candidate hence the slogan " vote wisely" .
With Atiku dominating in the NW & NE while the OBIdient movement resonates among the grassroots in the SE,SS, most parts of NC, christains & a reasonable number of muslims in the NW,NE as well as a large number of SW voters, where is Tinubu hoping to get the numbers from to make his dream a reality.
Stop crying and wailing...this is Happiness thread and positive energy...
