The sum of 300 million naira has been distributed as loans among 6,000 traders across the 33 Local Government Areas of Oyo State with no interest. During the event at the Lekan Salami Stadium Adamasingba in Ibadan, the Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, said that the initiative was part of his administration’s stomach infrastructure. The scheme is to boost economic activities among traders in the state. It is a partnership between the State Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria. Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade and Investment, Mr Isiaka Kolawole, said that the scheme is aimed at boosting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), and better grant small businesses access to funds. With a stronger capital base, the interest—free loans is expected to transform their businesses and bring about more economic growth in Oyo State. Unibenstudent:Imagine such outrageous amount wen workers are suffering? CHANGE is HERE!!! |
Vice President of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Issa Aremu, has expressed concern over non payment of workers salaries by 22 state governments in the country; A situation he described as unacceptable. In a statement he issued in Kaduna on Thursday, Aremu described the development as a wage theft, wage robbery and economic crime. The NLC Vice President explained that the same governors who had failed to pay workers their salaries for more than three months, were able to mobilise funds to pay their delegates during the just concluded party primary elections across the states. He therefore called on the governors of the affected states go to the same place they got they money to pay delegates and settle the workers’ salaries without further delay. “We see that delay in payment of salaries as wage theft, wage robbery. It is actually an economic crime because Nigeria Labour law says thou shall pay the worker as at when due. In fact by 22nd of every month you must have paid the workers fully. “We never heard of any delegate being owed a single penny during the primary elections, but they cannot get money to pay the workers. In fact, some of the delegates even bought new cars and properties after the primaries because they money they got in just few days is much more than what workers earn in many months”. The NLC Vice President further noted that it was time for the Federal Government to review upward the national minimum wage in order to reflect with emerging economic challenges and also warned against any attempt by government to further impoverish the Nigerian workers with reduction in pay or loss of jobs on account of the recently announced austerity measure by the Federal government. He also noted that the $65 per barrel of crude oil as captured in the 2015 budget confirmed that Nigeria is an oil dependent economy contrary to the claim of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy that the budget is projected on a non oil revenue basis. Instead, the union believed that sustainable budgets were the ones based on revenue arising from real sector of the economy such as domestic manufacturing and exportation of finished goods. Mr Aremu said the National Assembly, while debating the budget proposal, should put policies that will grow the real sectors of the economy and also ensure that the Central Bank of Nigeria lowers the interest rate and stop the free fall of the Naira which will undermine purchasing power of the working people. He also asked the National Assembly to make sure the budget captured practical measures on reducing cost of governance which must start with drastic reduction of pay and allowances of the Executive and Legislature. The National Coordinator of the House-to-House Political Education Initiative, Kunle Ehinlanwo, who is a son of a former PDP senator, made this known to newsmen at a press briefing in Abuja. The group cited Jonathan’s poor performance and inability to check corruption among political and office holders for its decision. The House-to-House campaign group, which in 2011 helped push Goodluck Jonathan into power, today turned its back on him and threw its weight behind his main challenger, Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress (APC). House-to-House Campaign Organization Dumps President Jonathan, Adopts Buhari For Change The group cited Jonathan’s poor performance and inability to check corruption among political and office holders for its decision. The National Coordinator of the House-to-House Political Education Initiative, Kunle Ehinlanwo, who is a son of a former PDP senator, made this known to newsmen at a press briefing in Abuja. He said that the initial idea of the organization was to support the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan in the belief that continuity would better secure Nigeria’s democracy considering its current stage onthe democratic ladder. Upon deeper review and careful analysis of the situation in the country, he explained, his group had come up unconvinced with the performance of the Jonathan administration. “We have consequently decided to throw our support in favour of General Muhammadu Buhari, the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who we are convinced is a better man for the challenging job,” he said. Ehinlanwo declared that the House-to-House Initiative will henceforth campaign vigorously to canvass massive votes for the election of General Buhari and his running mate, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, ahead of the next general election across the 36 states of the Federation, the FCT and the 774 Local Government areas in 2015. He explained: “For the record, our organization is engineered and powered by concerned citizens and patriotic volunteers throughout Nigeria to achieve these common objectives. We are concerned about the future of this great nation buffeted by bad leadership and we believe the time for a collective action towards a purposeful and responsible government which shares the wishes and aspirations of distressed Nigerians is now. We have therefore taken the bull by the horn to do honest bit in the quest for change.” He revealed the aims and objectives of the organization, among others, to be: (1) To mobilize Nigerians, particularly the youths, to ensure victory for General Muhammadu Buhari and Prof. Yemi Osinbajo in the presidential election. (2) To properly educate Nigerians on the imperatives of electing the APC presidential flag bearer in the 2015 presidential election to achieve a lasting progressive CHANGE. (3) To assiduously canvass the election of General Muhammadu Buhari and indeed a necessity to right the debilitating condition in our nation today, thereby ensuring justice, peace, unity and prosperity among the Nigerians people. (4) To work in harmony with the National Leadership of the APC and all other organizations, including socio-economic, political and volunteer formations to propagate the ideals of a new era of possibilities. Ehinlawon dismissed the challenge posed by the incumbency factor in Nigerian politics, saying that APC would triumph because the Nigerian people can see beyond the antics of the rudderless Jonathan administration, particularly the desperate quest for power that can be observed in its actions and activities in recent times. He stressed that Nigerians earnestly yearn for change and that it is becoming very clear that no amount of intimidation or corruption of the electoral process will change that tide. The voices of the people will be heard, loud and clear, via their massive votes at the election, he said.

The All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State has counseled Governor Ayodele Fayose to always follow legal steps in the governance and financial management of the state. In a statement issued on Monday in Ado-Ekiti, the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, Taiwo Olatubosun, said the governor breached the constitution by presenting budget to only seven of the 26-member House of Assembly. He recalled that the seven members of PDP in the Assembly had earlier sat to illegally confirm commissioner-nominees and also approved the dissolution and reconstitution of the local governments, among others. In a swift reaction, Fayose has counseled the APC to bring back its 19 “runaway lawmakers” to the State, saying, “No individual, group or political party can hold the State to ransom.” He stated that three unnamed APC lawmakers were present at the sitting on Monday when he made the budget presentation. Olatunbosun maintained that the “Monday illegal sitting with a full house of thugs was a new dimension to the constitutional breaches and lawlessness by the Executive. “We never knew that Ekiti people could be brought to this low record in decency and respect for the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by herding thugs to the hallowed chamber of the House of Assembly to join seven members to present state budget. “The standard practice is for the governor to present the state budget to members in full session while the public sit at the gallery to watch proceedings. But in this instance, thugs intermingled with the lawmakers in a plenary in such a way that you cannot differentiate a lawmaker from a thug.” The APC spokesman tasked journalists to be professional in their duties to save democracy. “This is time for activism in journalism. Reporters must begin to ask questions on the abnormality and breaches of the constitution in governance process.” Olatubosun, who called the attention of Nigerians and lovers of democracy around the world to the reign of impunity in Ekiti State, urged all organs and agencies of government responsible for budget processing not to get themselves involved in any financial transactions based on the “illegal budget”. He stated that all actions on the budget and transactions involving the features of the budget were illegal until “it is legally presented to a legally constituted House of Assembly composed of 19 members of APC and their seven colleagues in PDP.” He also called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and Independent Corrupt Practices Commission to beam their lights on government financial transactions in Ekiti State in the face of mindless plot to defraud Ekiti people through illegal conduct in the financial management of public funds. But reacting through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Fayose said it was shameful and wicked for the APC and its leaders to think that they can hold the entire people of Ekiti down just because they lost power. Olayinka, who warned the APC lawmakers of the consequences of losing their seats should they continue to abdicate their legislative duties, added that, “by the rule of the House of Assembly, each member must attend the House sittings for 168 days in a year.” Stating that the sitting of the House in which the 2015 budget was presented was lawful, he advised the APC to approach the court if it had any genuine complain to make. Olayinka said, “Today is December 15 and the APC lawmakers know that 2015 Budget must be presented as provided by the 1999 Constitution. Yet, some of the APC lawmakers refused to report in the House of Assembly, except three of them, who are interested in the progress and development of the State. “The reality is that we are not in the Ekiti of 2007 where the APC (then ACN) lawmakers made presentation of the 2008 budget by the then Governor, Segun Oni, almost impossible. “The business of government in Ekiti State will not wait for the APC and their retrogressive lawmakers, and the party leaders must know this and advise the former Speaker, Adewale Omirin and his runaway lawmakers to return to Ekiti.” |
Olaolu Ayoola, displaying the drone he built. | credits: Femi Makinde Osun State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori, watched in admiration how a drone built by a corps member posted to Osun State took off and carried out surveillance of the parade ground at the Permanent Orientation Camp of the National Youth Service Corps on Monday. The corps member, Olaolu Ayoola, a graduate of Computer Science/Engineering of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, stole the show with his invention during the closing ceremony of the orientation course for the 2014 batch ‘C’ of corps members deployed in the state. The drone, which soldiers and other security agents present at the event, described as a good invention, flew for about 10 minutes before it landed. The device is fixed with surveillance camera, and can stay in the air for 20 minutes and is capable of flying up for 500 meters. The device with remote control has 2.4G radio transmitter and carried out live recording of the event which was monitored on a black berry phone. Ayoola told our correspondent in an interview that his love for aeronautics drove him into engaging in the device. Apart for military use, Ayoola said that the drone could also be used by politicians to hoist their flags and could also be used to monitor activities on large farms. He said, “This type of drone, if fully developed, could be used by farmers. You can deploy it to fly round a farm of about 20 hectares and you will monitor what is going on on the farm right from where the remote control is. “It can be used to monitor traffic situation and in case of flooding, the drone can monitor the area. “I spent over N20,000.00 to build this but I can do something with a bigger capacity and which will stay for more hours in the air if fund is available.” The deputy governor who said she was impressed with the drone said the corps member should assembly youths anywhere he was posted to serve and teach them how to do this kind of invention. The State Coordinator, Mr. Abada Okpiroro, also commended the corps member for the drone. |
