PoliticsEkiti Factional Lawmakers Jerk Up Budget by ABDamola(op): 6:40pm On Dec 31, 2014
The Peoples Democratic Party caucus of the Ekiti State House of Assembly on Wednesday passed into law the 2015 budget in a closed-door session, after jerking it up by about N166 million.

Governor Ayodele Fayose had on December 15 presented a N80.774 billion 2015 budget titled, “Budget of Reality” to the Assembly amid tight security.

But the Assembly after chasing out journalists from covering the plenary presided over by the factional leader, Dele Olugbemi, on Wednesday increased the budget to N80.94 billion.

Olugbemi who briefed journalists after the closed-door session said the increase was for the Assembly to carry out renovation in the Assembly.

He added that the lawmakers ensured that all the three arms of government, Executive, Judiciary and the Legislature were well represented in the budget proposal.

Journalists and other members of the public were chased out after the leader of Government Business, Samuel Ajibola, raised an objection, describing the sitting as a special one that needed to be held in closed-door.

“We are not flouting the laws if we ask non-members to walk out,” Ajibola said.

At this point, the Sergeant-at-arms and other internal security of the Assembly ordered those affected, including journalists to take their leave.

Justifying the action, Olugbemi while addressing newsmen said the House can design the kind of sitting it desired, depending on the circumstance.

Olugbemi said the House of Assembly’s committee on Appropriation did a thorough job, saying this is the first time the budgetary estimate submitted at the Assembly would be increased since 2011.

“The appropriation bill has now become a law. We decided to increase the budget estimate to prove that we are independent.”

Meanwhile, the embattled Speaker, Dr. Adewale Omirin, and other 18 lawmakers of the All Progressives Congress have described the passage of the budget as illegal and an exercise in futility.

Omirin, in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Wole Olujobi, described the sitting as “one in the series of comic tales by farcical politicians holding the reins of governance in Ekiti State.

He recalled that the seven PDP lawmakers had been suspended at a sitting two weeks ago in Ado-Ekiti where resolutions on the autonomy for the local governments among others were reached and sent to the National Assembly as Ekiti State contributions to the ongoing constitution amendment.

“It is sad‎ that Governor Ayodele Fayose has turned Ekiti State House of Assembly to a safari park where the macho posturing of misguided adults in G7 is being masterfully manipulated by this accomplished choreographer of political sophistry.

“In the sitting they themselves knew was illegal, they chased away print and electronic reporters that got wind of their plan to sit. They held the illegal meeting with no in-house correspondents in attendance as they were also chased out.”

Omirin insisted that APC members would continue to apply laws in whatever they do, stressing that what APC members swore to protect at inauguration is the sanctity of the Nigerian constitution.

“As far as the constitution of Nigeria is concerned, the ‘Assembly’ led by Olugbemi is an illegal body that has no place in law. APC lawmakers shall continue in the path of constitutionality for our errant and misguided colleagues to know that it is only through law, truth and honour that we can take Ekiti State to the heights that will be a pride to all our people,” Omirin said.

However, Olugbemi maintained that the sitting was legal, urging the APC lawmakers to face the reality.

Olugbemi, in a statement by his media aide, Mr Femi Iroko, said, “We sat in the hallowed chamber of the Ekiti State House of Assembly and received the bill from the duly elected governor of the state and worked on the bill in the constitutionally-designated venue for the sittings of an honourable house. Let Omirin tell the world where he and his co-travellers sat to take their wild decisions.

“Legislative matters are serious matters and not what a disgruntled set of people would go and sit in the parlour of a godfather and take decisions that can never be binding. Omirin and his group are free to call a family meeting for Aisegba-Ekiti and think they are not deluding themselves.”

PoliticsOAU Students To Jonathan: Fulfil Your Promise Or We Work Against You In 2015 by ABDamola(op): 11:26am On Dec 29, 2014
The leadership of the Students’ Union of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife has asked President Goodluck Jonathan to deliver on his promise to the students as regards reduction of their increased school fees among other demands or stand a chance of being voted out of office during the general elections in 2015.

According to the students, “We in OAU may have no other option but to mobilize our rank and file against the Jonathan/Sambo second term campaign if these demands are not met immediately.”

This was contained in a statement made available to our correspondent on Sunday, 28th December, 2014 and signed by the Student Union President, Ibikunle Isaac and the Secretary, Bamidele Oludare.

This is coming exactly a month after President Jonathan was on OAU campus for a summit organised by the traditional and political leaders in the southwest where Jonathan was endorsed for a second term of office.

Hundreds of students of the institution had thronged the Oduduwa Hall, the venue of the summit armed with placards to protest what they described as rots in the education system while accusing President Jonathan of not doing enough in the education sector.

During the protest, President Jonathan who is the visitor to the university was said to had promised the student union leaders to look into their demands as they presented him with a protest letter.

According to the statement, “exigency and need for accountability demand that we remind Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan of his promise to the Great Ife Community as well as Nigerian Students at large.

“Nigerian students historically have permanently occupied the position of the conscience of the nation as well as the voice of the downtrodden. This rich history we in Africa’s most beautiful campus have taken upon ourselves to defend. In the spirit of this we wish to remind the first citizen of our Great Nation, President Jonathan of his promise to us on our University campus on 28th November, 2014 which marked his purposeful visit to our campus.

“The leadership of the students’ Union on the above date, submitted a protest letter to the president containing the following demands among others; That our hiked fees be reversed to status quo and embargo be placed on increment in other federal institutions.

“That the welfare conditions of students be improved vis a vis construction and equipping of qualitative hostel buildings, lecture theatres, laboratories etc.

“That the federal government follow the UNESCO 26 percent budgetary allocation to education as such, that education be properly funded by the government as hike in fees have become the culture of Nigerian tertiary institutions at all levels to fund themselves.

“Today, Sunday, 28th December, 2014, marks one full month of the President’s visit to our campus. Your Excellency sir, we believe that our demands are the least that can be done by your government as far as education is concerned.

“We are not oblivious of the stressful demands of governance as well as efforts being made towards securing your second term in office. However, we as the conscience of the nation and the leaders of today consider meeting these few demands of ours as practically exigent national needs that could even have effect on your second term bid.

“Despite the six months of our life given to ASUU struggle in 2013, many of us have had course to stay home for some 2 or 3 more months in 2014 due to struggles against hike in fees. We in OAU may have no other option but to mobilize our rank and file against the Jonathan/Sambo second term campaign if these demands are not met immediately.”

PoliticsDeclare What You Left In Treasury, Fayose Tells Fayemi by ABDamola(op): 6:08pm On Dec 28, 2014
Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has challenged his predecessor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, to declare what he left in the treasury after his four year tenure ended on October 16, 2014.

He was reacting to comments made by Fayemi on Ondo State-based radio station, ADABA 88.9 FM, on Friday.

Fayemi had refuted Fayose’s claim that he (Fayose) left N10. 4 billion in the government coffers shortly after he was impeached from office in October 2006.

He disclosed that available records showed that Fayose left N3.5 billion and a lot of contractor obligations behind after his dramatic ouster from power in 2006.

Fayemi also revealed that actual cost of the new Government House otherwise known as the Ayoba Villa was N2.1 billion, adding that it was lower than other newly-constructed Government Houses in other states.

But Fayose, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, said since Fayemi had admitted that Fayose left N3.5 billion in the State treasury when he left office in 2006 and not N10.4 billion as claimed by Fayose, he should also be honest enough to tell the whole world how much he left in the treasury.

Olayinka said, “It is funny that Fayemi is embarking on campaign six months after he was defeated in the entire 16 local councils in the State, including his own local council.

“In as much as we do not want to join issues with Fayemi, because we know that he is still in psychological pain and trauma, having lost the opportunity of occupying the aristocratic N3.3 billion Oke Ayoba Government House that he used borrowed fund to build, we must tell him that he should desist from his life of one day, one lie, because Ekiti people can no longer be deceived by his tales.

“It is funny that Fayemi lied to Ekiti people before he assumed office; claiming to be friend of President Barrack Obama, lied for four years as governor and he is still lying, six months after Ekiti people chased him out of office with their votes.”

Olayinka said Fayemi’s claim that he had paid all contractors, including the one handling Ado-Iworoko-Ifaki road was illogical.

“If Fayemi had paid the contractor handling Ado-Iworoko-Ifaki road as he claimed, why was the troubled spot in front of the State Hospital not fixed? And why didn’t Fayemi himself arrest the contractor for refusing to move to site?

“It is on record that apart from debt of over N86 billion, with which Fayemi mortgaged Ekiti State till year 2020, August and September salaries of workers were left unpaid, four months deductions for workers Cooperative Societies and Union Dues were not remitted while pension and gratuity were not paid.”

Olayinka restated that as at the time Fayemi was leaving, Ekiti State Government was indebted to the tune of N86 billion.

He concluded that Fayose will not be distracted by the ranting of Fayemi and his party.
