We should actually establish more institutions to churn out more medical graduates (across all sub-fields) for export. Greater remittances, more avenues to learn new techniques and grasp knowledge. I betoken that more japa folks will return within a decade, with their return, they come with a higher skill-set and experience.

The Philippines, India, Nepal and Indonesia do this. We should do the same. India even has ease of work visas as part of any trade agreement it wants to sign with another country.

Within a decade.... Hahaha. Very funny. Try 2 to 3 decades.
Oh and they're not coming to serve Nigerians, they're coming to get money from rich people living in Nigeria who never had much of a problem to begin with.

Tell me how that solves the problem of 95 percent of Nigerians exactly

With project funds I can agree but just monthly salaries and allowances, that's overblown!

It's the how much money goes into the pocket monthly that matters, not the technical salary. Nigerians don't care what anything technically is, and we shouldn't. Looting is all it is

If you pay 500k more, USA will pay 5000 dollars more, and then devalue your currency to $1= 2500naira.
Thats what we are dealing with now, Nigerians will study Medicine even if it came with a loan
We are not people to shy away from such.

People send their children to study medicine in russia, Ukraine and other countries that are cheap. Only a rel few wealthy ones go the usa route.

Currency losing value is lot more complex than just usa waking up and DDD declaring the naira devalued because of medicine.

Sir, this is not a solution you've offered.
Nigerians studied medicine in this country long before the past decade of japa.
They studied and thrived here.
So, let's solve the problems we created instead of creating even more problems for ourselves.

Nigerian doctors aren't after the best payment in the world, that's not why they're leaving. If a fresh out of school Doctor earns 500k, and they're to earn 700k as residents they will stay. Many will. It's that simple.

It's a matter of deciding if Nigerian lives are worth paying someone 500k to save. Your leaders don't think so. Don't join them in normalizing their rubbish. They have money to afford any health problem, we don't. Let's pay those who are willing to stick with us.

Mind you, even with that 500k, the doctors will still be underpaid and overworked. But many of them will stay and ride it out, and stick with their people.
It's like you people don't understand how bad it feels to leave your own people to go and be an economic slave to white people who have more doctors per person already than we can ever dream of. You think kemi, and aisha and kenneth are just eager to go and do that. Just pay them and let's stop making them villains while those who are far less educated earn millions for the job of changing national anthem

A country of clueless people being governed by clueless people. What do you expect.
Your children are running away with heavy hearts.
You think they want to leave?
Do you know how many will gladly return if conditions improved even a fair bit?
A base salaries of 500k alone will increase retention rate. Give them a car and pathway to a house, nearly half of those leaving will consider staying.

Go further and actually employ more doctors and improve training and conditions in facilities... Problem solved.

Noooooo, let's dream up all the ways not to solve the problem whilst pretending we know what we're doing

Nigeria is being exploited by UK,USA and Canada by poaching their best healthcare workers.(UK Medicine admissions fell by 12% this year)

They let Nigeria train them(for relatively free) only for them to hire them for peanuts into their own system.

How does the USA,UK and Canada prevent this happening to them ?

They saddle all graduates with huge loans.......give or take 350 thousand dollars.

So that when you graduate, you will be forced to work in the USA, if you desire to pay back that loan.

If you decide to go work somewhere else, you will never be able to pay back that loan.(They devalue the currency of the home country)

If Nigerian government wants to stop this, they need to saddle all those courses that are high brain-drain prone with huge loans.

Give every doctor a 10 million Naira loan, payable only to his tuition and then give them a job where 1 million Naira is forgiven every year or 500k every year. Only award them certificates as doctors after the loans are paid in full or on completion of a mandatory 10 years of working in a government hospital. Salaries have to be competitive and realistic. No doctor should earn less than a senator.

This will deter a lot of health workers from going abroad the next day after graduating.

They won't take the loans. You'll have when less doctors.

They don't saddle doctors with loans as a way of retaining them. That's smooth brained thinking. Everyone has loans in the usa. Everyone.

Their doctors stay because that's where they get paid the most.

Nigerians won't take the loans, they'll send their children away from your broken country. You'll end up with even less doctors.

Stop trying to solve problems backwards.
Ordinary 500k base salary is enough to increase retention rate in this country. Yet you're here talking of saddling them with loans.
Same kind of thinking as your smooth-brain leaders

Health / Re: 67% Of Nigerian Doctors Practice In UK, NHS Will Struggle If They Leave–minister by abdsamad(m): 11:36pm On Aug 14
Hemanwel:
For Nigeria to have more medical professionals - doctors in particular - the government should establish a system where they will sponsor first degree best graduating students in Life Science courses, who still aspire to become medical doctors but don't have the financial capability to study the course. It is going to be a long-term plan that will benefit the country immensely. Of course, it will come with the condition that, after the study, they MUST practice here.

Our medical training is already subsidized.
Stop trying to solve problems from top down. You want to force people to stay rather than fix why they're leaving.
Health / Re: 67% Of Nigerian Doctors Practice In UK, NHS Will Struggle If They Leave–minister by abdsamad(m): 11:32pm On Aug 14
SmartPolician:

I think what Nigeria needs is to allow health workers who finished from public institutions to leave Nigeria after practicing in Nigeria for at least 5 years.

However, they have to pay the Nigerian government an annual support fee of $5k for 5 years. This will go into funding more schools of health across the country, improving their research, improving the working conditions of health workers who still work in Nigeria and increasing the number of such schools across the country. It's a 50-50 deal.

They have to pay how?
As per they didn't pay school fees while studying in Nigeria or you'll follow them to the uk to arrest them for not paying your money.

Also, people miss one important thing. You can't replace people after five years and expect things to work. Nobody will go into residency training. The consultants are too underpaid to care about teaching anybody. The senior registrars used to care but they're all doing residency to make enough to leave.

So what happens to the new ones coming in? 3/4 already plan to leave so they're barely paying attention. The rest may go into residency but there's nobody to actually teach them.

The workload will be hell, and they'll change their minds about staying after 2 or 3 years on the job.

In summary, you'll be losing your best doctors so that you can use the money to train the worst ones. Congratulations!

From his pocket? Or which one is donate again

Thank you o.

If he can afford two billion, the question is how.
If it's government money, he didn't donate it, it's an allocation.

We are the ones who allow these people to get away with nonsense.
It's like saying a Doctor donated a kidney to a patient after surgery, when all he did was to get paid to take kidney from one patient and put it in another.

Rugaria:

The way the states purse has been handed over to the governors in Nigeria is undemocratic. A governor/president in Nigeria can wake up one morning and order his finance minister/commissioner to transfer all monies in the state coffers into his account or that of his girlfriend and nothing will happen, apart from the EFCC using that to blackmail the governor into supporting the president in power. This is wrong in all fronts. In almost all the states of the federation, this has led to situations where tenures of the governors are characterized with basically looting of the states funds without doing anything to help the people.. The Rivers State governor woke up one morning and bought brand new SUVs for all political office holders in the state, just to look like a father Christmas! Billions wasted on a set of people who are already rich beyond measure. There should be a very strong monitoring system to checkmate these excesses. It's not their personal purse. The federal legislature should enact a law making it mandatory for every executive expense to be veted by a non partisan anti corruption body created by say the judiciary/NBA, NOT the executive.

It should also be made impeachable if a governor is found neck deep in such pratices.. Again, I think it's time we remove blanket immunity for executive office holders in Nigeria! It's not working! It's counter productive here. Maybe, it's working for other democracies, but the opposite is the case here. Governors and presidents should be forced to answer to cases of corruption and extra judicial killings while in power! A special process that allows for indictments before prosecutions should be created in order to avoid the whole idea being abused by political opponents. Ordinary people with sensitive information should have the constitutional abilities to activate this process. This is necessary because as it's today, both the judiciary and the legislature can easily be bought over by an overzealous executive to blunt any investigations, only for the chief executive to then proceed to loot and plunder under the cover of an amarphous immunity clause. The shameful display of opulence in the midst of want is wrong..

Well said.
I just don't see how we'll acheive this.
Something drastic needs to be done, just don't know what.
Demonstrations will be stopped as we saw during endsars.

I thought about how we got here and using that as a roadmap to exiting this cycle of doom. Our best and most brilliant people, the ones who are humble and intelligent go into professions like law and medicine etc. Where do the dummies and "average" ones go? Politics.

These are people who have nothing else going for them so they have to steal. So how do we change the narrative and start to put the qualified and moral ones in public offices?

Is the solution a political movement that is bred among the young working class. A merit based movement that aims to gather the ones who have a passion to get involved but don't know how cos everything seems doomy and gloomy.

It's a drunkman's fantasy, I know. I just wish we can do more than complain online. We're all complaining online. Why can't we start to organize our thinking and doing solutions
