The House of Representatives on Tuesday intervened in the raging controversy over the refusal of the Nigerian Law School to call a graduate, Amasa Firdaus, to the Bar.
According to Punchng, the House directed its Committees on Justice and Judiciary to investigate the matter and make appropriate recommendations to the floor. .

The resolution followed a motion moved by a member from Kano State, Mr. Abubakar Danburam-Nuhu. He had faulted the Law School on the grounds that it infringed on the fundamental rights of Firdaus. .

The University of Ilorin graduate was due to be called to the Bar on December 12. However, the Law School stopped her after she insisted on wearing the Hijab. On its part, the school insisted she must adorn a wig, the conventional head cover worn by lawyers. .

Firdaus had been quoted as saying that she opted to wear the Islamic head scarf to challenge the status quo. On Tuesday, Danburam-Nuhu, while arguing his motion, told the House that under Section 38 of the 1999 Constitution, Firdaus was entitled to dress the way she liked. .

“The section supersedes any provision by any government agency or institution”, he stated. He said the wig or the dress code of lawyers was borrowed from the West, adding that Nigeria must not impose it on its citizens because it came from the West. .

Danburam-Nuhu claimed that in the UK and some African countries, including Kenya, graduates were allowed to use the Hijab during graduation or other similar ceremonies.

For allegedly shooting and killing a bread seller, the Ondo State Police Command has said it has arrested a security guard of the NNPC Petrol Station at Shagari Village junction in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Femi Joseph who disclosed the arrest of the man, Jonah Sunday, said the suspect committed the crime last Wednesday evening and was immediately arrested by the men of the command.

Joseph said the command had begun investigation into the incident.
“The information reached us at about 9.30pm on Wednesday that the suspect killed somebody bedside the filling station. We were made to know that the suspect was shooting into the air. We don’t know the reason for that, may be he was suspecting something.

But unfortunately as he was shooting, the bullets hit one of the people selling bread beside the filling station,” he said.

Joseph said the victim was quickly rushed to the hospital where he gave up the ghost, noting that it was the family of the victim that reported the case at the police station.

A tragic support worker accidentally took her own life in a “misguided” attempt to stop her troubled boyfriend from self-harming. Corinne Hayes, 23, feared Brian Marshall was about to commit suicide when she sent a message saying:
Quote
“If you are going to do it, so am I – meet you on the other side”.

Coroner Joanne Kearsley said she believed the text was part of a “very misguided attempt” for Mr Marshall, 33, to seek help for his mental health problems. She also ruled the 23-year-old did not intend to kill herself.

Corinne was found hanged at his apartment in Oldham, Greater Manchester in June last year, the day before she was due to attend Parklife music festival. Her inquest heard the couple started a relationship in September last year, which soon sparked concerns from her relatives.

On June 9, Corinne attended Mr Marshall’s flat where she discovered he had thrown a party without inviting her. The inquest heard the pair argued and the party came to an abrupt end before the couple left the flat and went separate ways.

Messages read out at the hearing showed the row continued over text message with Corinne telling Mr Marshall in one exchange:
“If you are going to do something I couldn’t hack it. I couldn’t live without you.”
Another said: “What about your kids, what about your nan? I am going to have to tell her everything, I can’t deal with this.”


Det Insp Kenny Blain told the hearing police received a call from Mr Marshall who reported finding Corinne in his flat while he was with two friends in the early hours on June 10. He said Corrine had been drinking with a friend the previous evening before she arrived at the 33-year-old’s flat where they instantly began to argue.

He told the inquest:
“It appeared that Brian had got into her head and had made her very upset and distressed.”

Around two hours before Corinne’s body was found, she sent a text to Mr Marshall which read:
“I tell you what, if you are going to do it, so am I. Meet you on the other side.”

Det Insp Blain added:
“I believe that Brian may have expressed a wish to harm himself that night.”

Mr Marshall has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act and did not attend the inquest. His two friends, who were initially declared suspects following Corinne’s death, were later cleared of any wrongdoing.

Recording a conclusion of misadventure, coroner Joanne Kearsley said;
“Corrine had so much to live for. She had clearly got herself into a relationship with Brian Marshall who she clearly loved.
“There were some concerns about that relationship and his behaviour on June 10. I do accept that Corrine had been out drinking with a friend and Brian had not wanted her to go to the party that evening.
“When she did go round it caused a bit of an altercation and there comes a point where they both leave the property.
“Corrine stays within that area and Brian stays away from the property – I do not believe he was in the property when the incident occurred."

The museum tweeted that “Da Vinci’s Salvator Mundi is coming to #LouvreAbuDhabi,” which was confirmed by Christie’s, the auction house that handled the sale of the painting. Christie’s declined to say whether the museum bought the painting.

The New York Times reported Saudi Prince Bader bin Abdullah bin Mohammed bin Farhan al-Saud purchased the painting at the Nov. 15 auction.

The painting, the title of which means “Savior of the World” in English, was the most expensive painting ever sold at auction. The previous record was Pablo Picasso’s Les Femmes d’Alger, which sold for $179 million.

The Louvre Abu Dhabi, which is affiliated with the Paris original, opened in November, costing more than $1.3 billion to construct. It has more than 600 artworks in its permanent collection.

Miss Debby Oluwatimilehin Akinsola is a 25-year-old Nigerian student, who can speak the 11 official languages of South Africa— isiZulu, Setswana, Ndebele, Isixhosa, Sesotho, Tsonga/Xangani, Afrikaans, English, Sepedi, Venda and Swati.

Akinsola told newsmen in Pretoria, South Africa, yesterday, that she was born in her hometown, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.

According to her, “in 2002, my parents moved to Botswana. There, we stayed in locations known locally as Metsimotlhabe in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana.

Debby-Akinsola said;
“We were the only Nigerians there and most locals could not speak English. We used hands gesture to interact and communicate. As a child then, I started speaking Setswana, the Botswana language.”

Akinsola said the turning point in her ability to speak the languages was when her family moved to South Africa in February 2010.

She said: “I had just finished secondary school then. My family stayed in Soweto and the popular language was Zulu. In the shops, barbers shop, markets, churches and taxi drivers, everybody spoke the Zulu language.

“As I started school there, it took me one year and a few months to learn and speak the 11 languages in South Africa. I can also speak and write the Yoruba language fluently.”

Akinsola later read Business Management at the University of Pretoria and presently, she is studying professional diploma at the Chartered Institute of Secretaries.

According to her, her fluency in the languages earned her the role of an interpreter at her local church.

Her words: “In our local church in Pretoria, Apostolic Faith Church, I am the interpreter of the General Overseer (GO).

“The GO speaks Zulu and any local language and I interpret in English to the congregation.”

Akinsola said she and her senior brother, Samuel, a computer expert, are the only children from their parents.

‘I want to marry a Nigerian’, she said.
She added that “the last time I visited Ibadan was in 2008. My parents are now missionaries based in South Africa. I will like to marry a Nigerian. I want my children to know my language and culture.

“My dream is to become a board member in a firm after getting my professional certificate.”

Halima Salihu, an Abuja-based businesswoman, has approached a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) sitting at Maitama, Abuja, seeking the dissolution of her marriage to her husband, John Nouhayin, on the grounds of desertion.

The petitioner informed the court, presided over by Justice Peter Affen, that she got married to the respondent on June 16, 2014 at the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) marriage registry and were issued with a marriage certificate.

According to her, her husband left their Kubwa, Abuja residence on July 27, 2014 without telling her anything, only for her to later discover that some of his belongings were no longer in the house.

She said;
“My Lord, we got married on the 16th of June, 2014 at AMAC marriage registry. We were given a marriage certificate that day. We moved in together as husband and wife after the marriage.

“On the 27th of July, 2014, he left the house at Kubwa without saying anything to me. I waited throughout that day. His line (telephone) was not going through.

“I later found out that some of his belongings were no longer in the house,” the petitioner told the court.

She informed that she contacted her husband’s family to tell them the issue on ground but the response they gave was unsatisfactory.

The petitioner added that it was then she contacted her uncle and told him what was happening.

“My uncle met with his family who told him that he had travelled out of the country and that he was no longer interested in the marriage. I still waited hoping that he would change his mind and come back.

“But up till now, he has not come back. That is why I brought the matter before my Lord,” the petitioner told the court.

She, therefore, pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage.

Counsel for the husband, Abubakar Muhammed, told the court that he did not want to cross-examine the plaintiff.

He stated that based on the instruction of his client, all the wife said in her petition before the court was true.

According to the counsel, “based on the instruction of my client, the respondent confirmed that all she claimed in her petition is true and he has no objection to the petition.”


Muhammed then urged the court to grant the relief sought by the petitioner.

Meanwhile, Justice Affen has directed parties in the matter to file their written addresses within seven days from Wednesday, November 29, 2017.

He, therefore, adjourned the case till Tuesday, December 5, 2017 for adoption of final addresses.

Odilinye Rita, a teacher at Starlight Seconday School, Ogidi, Anambra State, has been beaten to death by the parents of one Okafor Chinaza, a 14-year-old student she flogged. .

According to journalist Eze Amadi, the incident happened on Wednesday, 29th of November, 2017. Chinaza was allegedly flogged by Rita for not sweeping the class according to the roster.

According to fellow classmates, when the teacher questioned Chinaza on why she didn't sweep, she responded with insults. She then told her to kneel down, but she refused, prompting the teacher to annoyingly flog her.

The student later ran home and returned with her mom and uncle. According to the proprietress: "I was in my office with one of my teachers when she came in. I pleaded with them to allow the school look into the issue with diplomacy, as revenge won't yield needed result. She accepted to forget and forgive as I promised her that we will handle the case."

However, as the parents were leaving, they saw the teacher coming back from the private teachers meeting she had gone to. The mother was said to have rushed her with the stick she came with.

After a while, the teacher collapsed and was rushed to Iyi-Enu Hospital, Ogidi, where the doctor confirmed her dead. Currently, the parents and the student are being held at the police in Ogidi police station.

The Nigerian Artist who seem to be in love with the baby said he get heartbroken when he cries.

The baby, which he welcomed with her new baby mama and manager, Jada Pollock few weeks ago seems to be receiving much love from his dad.
