robosky02: Nigeria vs Cameroon: How Super Falcons tamed Lionnesses in long-running rivalry
The two African giants first met way back in 1998 and their historic clashes have been frequently greeted with harvest of goals.
1). The story of the fixture harks back to October 27, 1998. Les Lionnes were mere upstarts, with just two international games under their belt, a 3-2 spanking of Banyana Banyana of South Africa before bowing 3-2 to the Black Queens of Ghana. Cameroon lost 6-0 to the Florence Omagbemi-led Falcons in the first semi-final of the championship played in Abeokuta. This happened to be their biggest defeat in the hands of the west African side.
2) Two years later on November 18, 2000, Nigeria thwarted the Cameroonians’ ambition of a revenge mission as goals from Mercy Akide, Maureen Mmadu and Yusuf Olaitan in the Falcons’ 3-0 victory threw them out of the competition in South Africa despite their impressive 4-1 win against Morocco in their opening game.
The 2002 edition was a recess for both sides as they did not meet (due to Cameroon’s ouster in the earlier stages).
3) On September 22, 2004, revenge was in the air as Les Lionnes were desperate to notch up their first win against the African champions. South Africa was the battle ground this time around as the Falcons were held to a 2-2 draw. It looked like Nigeria was going to run riot against them following Perpetua Nkwocha’s 9th minute strike. Before the applause died down, Stephanie Mekongo had pulled her side on level terms before Francoise Bella’s goal ensured they shared the spoils with the Falcons after Vera Okolo had put them a goal up. Both sides met again in the final on October 3, 2004 with four goals from Nkwocha and a strike from Vera Okolo gave Nigeria a 5-0 victory for her third diadem.
4) The next episode in this storied rivalry was on November 7, 2006 in Warri where the Falcons, again, froze Cameroon 5-0 in the semi-final game. Cynthia Uwak’s 33rd minute strike opened the flood gates of goals before Nkwocha netted a treble with Effioanwan Ekpo sealing the whitewash with an awe-inspiring finish.
AWC meetings: Ten games: seven wins for Nigeria (1998, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2010,2012,2014), two draws (2004, 2008) & one win for Cameroon (2012)
AWC Final meetings: Nigeria 5-0 Cameroon (2004), Nigeria 2-0 Cameroon (2014)
5) November 28, 2008 Cameroon grew in confidence and were staunch when they met Nigeria two years after – though it was an unfamiliar terrain as they had to battle for the bronze medal in another episode at Equatorial Guinea on November 28, 2008. It was the first time the Super Falcons missed out of a place in the final after being stunned by the hosts courtesy of Genoveve Anonma's 58th minute effort. Les Lionnes on their own part were denied of a place in their second final as they got dazed in the last four outing against South Africa with Noko Matlou scoring a hattrick.
In the game to determine the third best team at the Estadio Internacional in Malabo, Maureen Eke gave Nigeria the lead before Onguene Aboudi forced the game into extra time with a classy finish. After 120 minutes stood at 1-1, Falcons edged past the Lionesses 4-3 via the penalty spot lottery.
6) November 11, 2010 Nigeria thumped Cameroon 5-1 at the Sinaba Stadium, Daveyton, South Africa on November 11, 2010 with the Lionesses’ nemesis, Nkwocha bagging another treble while Helen Ukaonu and Desire Oparanozie completed the rout. The central African nation got their consolation goal courtesy of Grace Ngock.
7) The 2012 edition of the African Women Championship witnessed another double-header between both sides. Nigeria ran out 2-1 winners against Cameroon on October 29, 2012 with strikes from Nkwocha and Onyinyechi Ohadugha erasing Patience Manie’s penalty goal.
After a failed bid by both teams to make the final, Cameroon challenged Nigeria for the bronze medal at the Nuevo Estadio de Malabo on November 11, 2012. The Falcons put in a less-than-convincing performance in the history of the meetings between the two teams and got punished by Gaelle Enganamouit’s 31st minute goal. That was their only defeat to their arch rivals.
. October 25, 2014
Nigeria avenged their defeat two years later by winning their seventh title after spanking Cameroon 2-0 on October 25, 2014 in the final played at the Sam Nujoma Stadium in Windhoek. This time, it was Oparanozie's free kick that opened the scoring before new kid on the block Asisat Oshoala tapped in to secure the lead and ensure the Super Falcons emerged victorious once more in this long-running football rivalry.
9) 3 December 2016.
The Super Falcons of Nigeria once again defeated the Cameroonian 1-0 at the finals of the 2016 finals played at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Omnisports Stadium in Yaoundé right before their fans. Though they put up a strong fight.
However a Goal from Oparanozie gave Nigeria the needed victory to hand over the title to Nigeria again .as it ended Nigeria 1-0 Cameroon.
10) 26 November 2018
Cameroon’s revenge mission against Nigeria’s Super Falcons at the 2018 Africa Women Cup of Nations failed to materialise as they fell 4-2 in a penalty shoot-out at the Accra Sports Stadium in Ghana. Full time scores were 0-0, after both sides battled to a stalemate in a game Cameroon showed more hunger to win. But for the tight Super Falcons defence marshalled by captain Onome Ebi and the good saves made by Oluehi Tochukwu in goal, the Cameroonians would have had their day. However, in the ensuing shoot-out, they couldn’t cope with the mastery of the Nigerian penalty takers. Tochokwuch made a good save and Cameroonians missed target. In the end it was again victy for Nigeria 4-2 on penalties.
The year 2020 was another year of recess for both team as the tournament did not hold no thanks to COVID-19.
11) 14th July 2022
Will see a return of the rivalry between the super falcons of Nigeria and the indomitable lionesses of Cameroon. Will the super falcons continue their dominance or like the South Africans can the lionesses pull up a surprise.?
We'll wait and see. Thanks for the info brr i started watching super falcon and super eagles in 2000. |
