Certification And Training Adverts / Re: Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) In Nigeria by accospace: 1:23pm On Jun 05, 2009
Akenzua, very well said. I am not averse to Open Source. You argue that business owners can always get access to the source code, and can always get qualified hands to modify it to their needs. I think from an economic point of view that makes sense, as long as the qualified hands remain visible in the picture to adapt the software to customers’ requirements and provide the less-expensive maintenance support, etc , because Spacely was right when he said businesses need someone else to heap the blame on when things go awry. And things do.

We both know the risks Open Source are easily exposed to(liability for intellectual property infringement, no guarantee of quality or fitness, etc). What SAP, for example, brings to bear is the 37 years of tried and tested expertise and global best practices in various industries and the big players can afford it and are comfortable with that. The attractive smaller and middle market is open playground to all comers – SAP and its competitors, Open source vendors too.

I can consider tested and reliable open-source solutions as dictated by opportunities out there. We might even do business one of these days (lol), who knows?

Cheers.

Akenzua II, you are right. ERP in Nigeria should be booming. And it is picking up in reality. Serious businesses with an eye on the bottom-line realize there is always a need for an ERP system in place. But what you miss is that there are ERP solutions targeted as at small and growing businesses as well –Any self-respecting ERP software provider has some offering or the other for that market niche. You don't necessarily have to be a multinational or a bank to implement an ERP solution anymore. I appreciate the fact that it does not come cheap really, but the point is with proper planning and financing, smaller and growing businesses too can run their ERP systems. They should view it as an investment which will bring in the returns.

Business Intelligence is like painting on a building, the icing on the cake. Get the foundation firm and structure in place first before you even go that route. Most Western companies have demand for BI because they had since sorted out the challenges of fundamental business processes which most Nigerian businesses still grapple with. For us here, BI is for the not-too-distant future. Learn it now if you want, though, it will come in handy.

Cheers.

Certification And Training Adverts / Re: Who Knows About SAP And ERP? by accospace: 5:21pm On Nov 21, 2008
Nice definitions by the SAP-informed. Wikipaedia, and other Google-related links will provide additional information.

The decision to pick up a career in SAP consulting is best not taken rashly; there are quite a number of factors to consider. Some of these have already been mentioned by the SAP consultants on this thread.

I am also personally interested in the growth of SAP in Nigeria, most of the implementations around here have been global roll-outs from parent companies, and that explains why the Shells, the Totals, the BATs, the P&Gs, the Nestles, etc ( the list is not limited to the names mentioned) all run their processes on SAP. It's been a challenge with local implementations - a number of which i've been involved - the usual Nigerian issues are there to contend with, but we'd get there, i believe. At the last count, i have been involved in 6 local SAP implementations one way or the other, and the list is growing.

It so happens that I am an SAP certified techno-functional consultant (Basis, SBO) based here in Naija, and been at it for over 3 years. I can be reached at accospace@ymail.com/08028371642 .

Cheers everyone.

Well, the likes of gofestac has about said it all in terms of what SAP is and all that, but the fact is SAP is still somewhat novel in Nigeria. You'd be surprised some IT professionals have not even heard anything about it before. Additional details can be gleaned by doing a thorough search in Google.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Re: Arsenal Fan Thread: For Gunners Only by accospace: 3:58pm On Nov 18, 2008
Maybe it's about time we had a change of guard at the Emirates?
There's something not just quite right about the Arsenal team for the past few seasons,
The stuff we put on display at the moment is not Champions stuff at all, no team with character gives away games easily the way Arsenal does it, Fulham, Hull, Stoke, Spurs, Villa, and-only-God-knows-who's-doing-it-next, Something like this ain't gonna happen at Stamford or at the other half of Manchester (the real one, i mean), or at Anfield. You don't win trophies with such inconsistencies. Maybe, i'm wrong, maybe AW has other reasons for being in the EPL or CL other than winning.
Methinks the mentality has got to change, the current philosophy has yet to yield much in terms of results. Mind you, I'm all for style a la Arsene Wenger, (and i don't mind seeing 16 passes strung together to get a goal) but this is got to be balanced with some steel in the team. Maybe it's high time AW did something differently; it's high time Arsenal bounced back, and i don't care who gets that done - AW or someone else as long as the job gets done.
Who wants to be a fan when you can be a winning fan?
I rest my case.
