F1 Visa approved!

Deficit = $10,194

GTA = $9,168

Tuition = waived

Sponsor = uncle

VO: how did you know about this school?

Me: I searched online through Princeton review, webinar and usnews (vo cuts and asked another question)

VO: why did you choose this school?

Me: (straight to the answer) because of Prof Bleep research project, I do a similar work at bleep research laboratory, he his researching on nanotechnology based biosensor that can detect cancer, oxidative stress etc... I also carry out oxidative stress assay, antioxidant assay and phytochemical analysis (vo nods head and cuts me)

VO: so you’d be working with this person (while looking at my I-20)

Me: (I thought she was referring to my international affairs officer from my school, so I explained) that’s the immigration officer (I made a mistake and corrected myself immediately) sorry, he’s the international affairs officer, yes i’d be working with professor bleep.

VO: what would you be doing? (For my GA)

Me: I’d be teaching laboratory classes, doing grading and assessment.

VO: where did you finish your study?

Me: Federal university of Technology Akure.

VO: what did you do after you finished?

Me: went for my nysc in 2016, worked at Nigerian Export Promotion council after I started working where I am currently.

VO: who would be sponsoring you?

Me: my uncle, Engr...

VO: do you have a statement?

Me: passed.

VO: (did a calculation) and said I’d be approving your visa and passed me the white paper.

It’s God’s favor and grace, if you can fast and pray please do, even though we get close to God at the times of our need, it teaches us a lesson how faithful God can be when we are always in his presence.

Note: please, in the face of all pink papers, every other person have their peculiar case, the place is not so tensed but be prepared and keep smiling.

Thanks to Debbie (your own is sorted already), Nerdychukz, Maximum frequency shawarma and Ayodeji, I wish you all on the USA student visa trend success.

Congratulations man

Don't get discouraged. Although, your test scores are on the low side, you can still get admissions to a good number of good masters programmes in engineering. Try applying to Prairie View A&M University in Texas. I'm very positive that you will get admitted. Upon getting to the school, you can then apply for graduate assistantship. A good number of folks I know doing their masters in engineering there have a graduate assistantship

Is it possible to get the graduate assistantship just before you begin your program? Or its something you look forward to having in your second year

Sincerely speaking, a score of 280 on the GRE and 76 on TOEFL is quite low as most schools typically list a minimum GRE score of 300 and TOEFL score of 79. However, if you have other things on your application to put your case forward, it will help. A more realistic option will be to get the admission first and then work towards getting a graduate assistantship. Also, for engineering, most schools reserve funding for PhD programmes and most times do not offer funding for masters programmes.

Hi Timotee, I plan on studying environmental engineering in the US. Do you mean there are limited fundings/scholarships for engineering at the MSc level?

Gosh! Finally got to the page 396 of this thread and boy, am I glad I did?

I looked back at the two questions I asked here and it's hard not to feel embarrassed. I mean, all of the answers were just lying everywhere on the thread. grin

I literally feel like I know most of you already by following your stories from the days of your GRE and TOEFL, your test days, expectations, disappointments, your acceptance in various schools, visa interviews and how you're coping in the country of study. Like I already said, I am very glad for the experience.

I am writing the GRE in October, and I haven't read jack. I will start classes on Monday that'll run six weeks for the GRE and four weeks for the TOEFL (all done together). I already went through the materials I got from B.Y Mafit and I don't know how to feel - confused? scared? worried? I don't know.

Please, I need as much encouragement as possible. If there are other people who are applying for Fall 2019 who haven't written the GRE yet, please say something as I'd need as much motivation as possible. In fact, let's motivate each other.

My profile:
Undergraduate GPA: 4.11/5
Course studied: Mass Communication
Intended course for Fall 2019: Advertising
GRE: -
TOEFL: -

I can't wait to give my testimony on here also.

P.S. If there is anyone going for an Advertising course in any US school, please holler. I'm yet to see anybody who is currently studying or wants to study Adverstising in the US (both here and the USA visa thread). All I see are tons of STEM courses and few communication courses.

Holler, I plan writing the GRE by October too. #fall 2019.

They were tougher than what is in the Manhattan 8-book series. Only Magoosh's Quants and verbal sections were comparable. Never had issues with TC and SE, so was always using ETS Big Book RC compilation with timing to improve RCs - it worked like magic, those practice questions were of the same level as the real test itself.

Cheers.

Nairaland / General / Re: 5 Types Of Friends That Would Ruin Your Finances - Avoid Them!!! by ace1995(m): 10:25am On May 18, 2018
Did anyone click on the link? He was talking about a book(3k) on how to make money on fiverr. Abeg is it real or na scam?
Dpredictor:
You may or may not have realized it yet, but the people you surround yourself with maybe subtly shaping the decisions you make with your money, and unfortunately, the outcome is often less favourable.

I showed two friends this material that I have used to make money online, one wanted to buy, and the other friend convinced him not to, claiming that it was a scam. A few months later, the one who discouraged the other came back and bought. He started making money, and that was how the other missed out.

There are friends you shouldn't keep; these kinda friends are gonna ruin you, and you won't even know. I will list them out so that you can verify if you have such friends around you.

Beware of these five types of people who can harm your finances:

1. Enemies of Progress

You will also recognize them by their comments on any wonderful topic that would help others. They are lazy and don't want to work hard, so they want everyone to miss the same opportunity that they miss.

The moment you drop any wonderful idea, you would hear things like "it won't work", "scam", "I have tried it before and it didn't work".

Such negative attitude will eventually rub off on you, and you will equally follow suit. The end result is that you remain comfortable in your condition and fail to push forward.

Identifying a person's negative characteristics early on puts you in a better position to protect your finances from people who can harm your finances. Be aware of how your friends may be affecting your money decisions, so you can better protect your finances.

2. Stingy Hands

Stingy Hands are people who, instead of thinking of money as a tool, see it as something to be conserved at all costs, even if it means alienating their friends.

Most of us may have experienced this multiple times, usually in situations where a bill is split and you'll be surprised to find that you need to pay more than expected.

What's worse is that these people do not value your friendship and would be willing to lose you as a friend, rather than spend their money.

3. Wasters

These type of people will castigate you for buying materials that would improve your finances. They are happy when you spend the whole day with your money drinking and enjoying at parties.

They may frequently borrow small amounts of money from you and expect you to pick up the tab if you invite them to go out somewhere.

It becomes worse when you may find yourself granting even bigger favours such as letting them use your ATM card to make a large purchase on the condition that they pay you back.

They pay you small amounts at first, but eventually, you'll find yourself chasing them down for the money.

4. Shopaholics

Shopaholics can be dangerous friends to have when you're trying to get out of debt or are aiming to save more. These people find the idea of letting cash sit in a bank account unthinkable.

If you spend some time with them at a mall, they'll soon guilt you into buying something you don't really need.

However, not all shopaholics have the intention to exhaust your resources and they could be oblivious to the idea. It just so happens that they have enough resources to live their lifestyle.

On the other hand, it doesn't mean you should be tempted to adopt their habits.

5. Braggarts

Braggarts are known for putting a lot of effort into letting everyone know how successful they are with their finances, which is rather off-putting.

They constantly tell you how great they're doing financially and it may cause you to question the choices you're making with your money.

It becomes more difficult when you're roughly the same age, as you find yourself starting to make comparisons between their progress and your own.

Life is a single race, so whatever you know would improve your finances, go ahead and do it. Forget about what people say. That it didn't work for them doesn't mean it won't work for you.

This material has helped people improve their finances, make sure you check it out using the link below;
