omohayek: What idiocy! Who gave you the right to decide for others what they do with their money? Did you help them earn it? Envious, entitled morons like you in power are the real cause of Nigeria's woes. Thank You,it's like someone buying jewelry and telling the person to sell it for something he does not want |

Onyiridike: So Japan, USA and Germany are stupid for giving huge awards to renowed researchers?
The man who developed PCR (Scientist Mullis) was rewarded with $10,000 and his idea was sold for $300,000,000.
Our own Prof. A. J Nok of the Biochemistry department of ABU, Zaria was rewarded by Germany with £6,000, Japan with ¥3,000,000 among others for his work in trypanosiomiasis.
How many academics have been encouraged by Nigerian Govt and private organizations?
And you wonder why common Kenya is now challenging us? My main point is the out of place comparism between entertainment shows and academic awards for stellar Gpa,besides you mention researchers that have one way or another contributed to the society not just get high grades, there's a difference |

Onyiridike: I don't want to believe that you hate education. Probably, you could not make good grades in school and you now vent your anger on those who have achieved what you couldnot achieve.
Well a prize means a reward for hardwork. It serves to encourage others. If you can reward a model with millions simply because she is beautiful, how much are you supposed to reward a brilliant graduate who sacrificed a lot and put in so much time to achieve academic excellence.
The food you eat, the phone you are using, the house you live in, the drug you take, the medical treatment you receive, the television, your clothes, your cream, the pure water, the good roads, electricity, the money you spend, among others are products of education (science and technology).
How do you reward people who are making effort to improve our standard of living by generating ideas and concepts?
This your mind-set is why Nigeria will never move forward.
For your information, the money USA budget for scientific research is more than the budget of ALL African countries put together. However, in Nigeria, N14,000,000 will be given to 2-Face for performing say during independence while N20,000 is given to professors. You think that live is all about money? Did you design a drug with money or knowlege?
Does a doctor treat you with money or knowledge?
Do mechanical engineers design car with money or knowlege?
If all the scientist in the world refuse to work, 40% of the world will die in a matter of months even if you break world bank. See you are right educatsón needs to be valued more, but you cant compare a beauty pageant to awards for academic excellence, one ,the pageants rewards based on a more rigid analysis of more returns, the beauty pageant are for profit, and one away to get the best of candidatés for the pageant is the attractive prizes, award for education is either for CSR by private company or some sort of way of encouraging talents, but this is not the optimal way for people to value education, the best away is to know that your degree can give you capacity to capitalize on the opportunuity around you, those opportunuities should be the main driving force,so dont compare a beauty pageant to award for excellence, they are not the same category |
