You don't get the point, do you? The question was: "Can one be good without God?" I believe in God and yes, people can be good without God. I gave you an example of the Gates' contribution to humanity without believing in any god. You don't need any religion to be good, its a choice you make. I met a French girl sometimes back that spend most her summer break in refuge camps in Africa and Asia as a volunteer to help teach and cater for displaced kids. I asked her one day about her believe in a god and she told me she doesn't believe in any god. I asked her her reason, she told me never had about any god until she was 11 years old and she didn't bother learning about it. Is she a good person? From the little months I spent with her, I believe she is one of the best person I have met in my life time. I even aspire to be like her in selfless service, I believe in God and she doesn't. Does she need a god to be good? NO.

This exactly what Christians don't agree. Even though religion encourages people to be good, people can be good for different reason without God. You make a mockery of yourself and religion when you try to force these things on people.

i hear all that bros but the question was IS IT POSSIBLE TO BE GOOD WITHOUT GOD, and the answer is YES IT IS POSSIBLE TO BE GOOD WITHOUT GOD, never mind the motivation. just because a person believes in God does not make them morally superior to someone who doesnt believe in God, in fact you will find out that the ones who believe in God are the most evil. so the ability to be good or bad has nothing to do with your belief in God. if you were a wicked person before you found God-more than likely you will be a wicked christian. if you were a nice person before you found God then more than likely you will be a nice christian. it is not your belief in God that changes your character, it is your absolute dedication to God that changes your character.

I don't read motives, i think God does that. Something is not necessarily or always God. People help others for many motives, for nothing, for the future, to feel good, to score points, for show off, for marriage, for past deeds, many things. You will hardly find help for nothing, and even when you do, what makes that help/good better than others?

However, you need to knowledge that such goodness is actually selfishness as an earlier poster has rightly pointed. Consider a man who feeds and houses the homeless because he feels it's the right thing to do, and a man who does the same because he believes the government will pay him a million dollars for doing it. Who do you think is inherently good between the two?

To ensure people do good things is sort of why religion was created in the first place. I for one don’t think people need “God” in their lives to live morally, but a lot of people do.It helps instill people with a sense of good, and for that it’s appropriate. However, to think that without "God" we would have no morals is obviously not true. As long as the "God" ideology and fear of "hell fire" is helping to put many of people in check,It's all good.

Religion is waning now,we need another form of mind control to maintain a balanced society.

A frnd of My Dad who is a Religion Philosopher was arguing with my Dad n some of their frnds that being an Atheist does not mean"anything goes"- infact, quite the opposite. What do you think? Can Morality be Independent of GOD? Can people who don't believe in GOD still be as"Good" as those who do? What govern your own decision about whether and how to act Ethically?

I personally gather that many people believe that Atheism implies Nihilism- that rejecting GOD means rejecting Morality. A person who denies GOD, they reason must be, if not actively Evil, at least indifferent to considerations of Right n Wrong.

Now to my questions Nairalander's.
(1) Where does Morality come from?
(2) What guides your thinking about how to act?
(3) Do you choose to act Morally mostly because of the promise of Reward or the threat of Punishment- from GOD or from some other Authority. Do you agree contrary to what some believe, living your life ethically is even more important if you are an Atheist, since if you do something Morally Reprehensible there is no God to forgive you, and the only value your life has is the Choices you make?
