You sess, we all need to stop putting terrible news out there everytime. In most advanced country especially in the Middle East. It's a crime for you to snap or record or have Copy of an accident scene in your device. It's big crime, for you're not in position to do that. So we shouldn't be a bearer of terrible and sad news everytime... Terrible and sad news happens everywhere in the world. Nigerians 🇳🇬 we're nt alone in this. Let's make use of our media in an healthy manner. Whether we like it or not, their is a significant mental breakdown It's causing us all. |

Ammonium nitrate: what is it and why is it so dangerous The Beruit port blast was caused by 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, which had been dangerously stored at the docks since, according to local media, they were impounded from the ship, the Rhosus, which had been allegedly abandoned by its owner in 2013. Here's an explainer on ammonium nitrate: Ammonium nitrate is an industrial chemical commonly used in fertilisers and as an explosive for quarrying and mining. It is an oxidiser considered relatively safe if uncontaminated and stored properly. But it is extremely dangerous if contaminated, mixed with fuel or stored unsafely. A large quantity of ammonium nitrate exposed to intense heat can trigger an explosion. Storing the chemical near large fuel tanks, in bulk in large quantities and in a poorly-ventilated facility could cause a massive blast. The larger the quantity, the more risk it will detonate. Ammonium nitrate: "explosion scaled down from a nuclear bomb" "On a scale, this explosion is scaled down from a nuclear bomb rather than up from a conventional bomb," said Roland Alford, managing director of Alford Technologies, a British company that specialises in disposal of explosive ordnance. "This is probably up there among the biggest non-nuclear explosions of all time." Colour of Beirut explosion Experts have noted the colour of the smoke and "mushroom cloud" seen in footage of Tuesday's blast as characteristic of ammonium nitrate explosions. "Video footage of the incident show initial white-grey smoke followed by an explosion that released a large cloud of red-brown smoke and a large white 'mushroom cloud'. These indicate that the gasses released are white ammonium nitrate fumes, toxic, red/brown nitrous oxide and water," said Stewart Walker from the school of Forensic, Environmental and Analytical Chemistry at Flinders University. "If you make ammonium nitrate explosive, you shouldn’t get that brown plume. That tells me the oxygen balance was not correct - so it wasn’t mixed as an explosive," he said. "The Beirut blast looks like an accident, unless it was arson." Past ammonium nitrate accidents Some of the world's deadliest industrial accidents were caused by ammonium nitrate explosions: * In 1921, an explosion of ammonium sulphate and nitrate fertiliser at the Oppau plant in Germany killed 565 people. * In 1947, a fire detonated around 2,300 tonnes of the chemical aboard a vessel in the U.S. port of Texas City, causing a tidal wave. At least 567 people were killed and more than 5,000 injured. * In Toulouse, France in 2001, an explosion at an ammonium nitrate depot killed 31 and injured 2,500. * Ammonium nitrate stored at a Texas fertiliser plant detonated in an explosion that killed 14 and injured about 200 in 2013. * In 2015, explosions at a warehouse storing ammonium nitrate and other chemicals in the Chinese port of Tianjin killed at least 116 people. * Andrea Sella, professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles, said of the Beirut blast: "The idea that such a quantity would have been left unattended for six years beggars belief, and was an accident waiting to happen." Use of ammonium nitrate in bombings Ammonium nitrate can be mixed with other substances to make a bomb. It was used in Irish Republican Army (IRA) bombings in London in the 1990s, the 1995 explosion that blew up a federal building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people, and the 2002 blasts in Bali nightclubs in which more than 200 died. Many of the homemade bombs that were used against U.S. troops in Afghanistan contained ammonium nitrate. Source https://en.as.com/en/2020/08/05/latest_news/1596643930_274970.html

AMSTERDAM — The Special Tribunal for Lebanon on Wednesday said it would postpone its verdict in the trial over the 2005 bombing that killed former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri to August 18, following the huge explosion in Beirut's port on Tuesday. The United Nations-backed court located outside The Hague, Netherlands, was due to give a verdict in the trial of four men who are accused in the deaths of Hariri and 21 others this Friday. The verdict has been delayed "out of respect for the countless victims of the devastating explosion that shook Beirut on 4 August, and the three-days of public mourning in Lebanon," the court's registry said in a statement. Before the explosion that rocked Beirut on Tuesday, the country had been bracing for the verdict in the case of the men charged with planning and arranging the bombing 15 years ago. The four defendants, who are not in custody and are being tried in absentia, are linked to Lebanon's Shia Islamist group Hezbollah. Three members of a gang who attempted to rob the branch of an old generation bank in Okeho, Oyo State were on Wednesday set ablaze by an angry mob. The robbers attacked the bank at about 3pm with a dynamite to gain access. It was however not yet clear if they succeeded in gaining access to the coffers. Oyo Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Gbenga Fadeyi informed the robbers were repelled by armed policemen deployed to counter them. According to him, the robbers were conveyed in an 18-seater bus to the bank. As soon as their attempt to rob the bank failed, he claimed they took to their heels but were pursued by policemen, local hunters and other concerned individuals. Speeding under pressure, Fadeyi, a Superintendent of Police, said, their bus summersaulted. He added a mob swooped and set the three of them ablaze. He described the incident as a failed robbery attempt, promising to give more details. But sources in the area said the robbers were ambushed and set ablaze by local hunters. Fadeyi said police were on the trail of other members of the gang who escaped. https://www.google.com/amp/s/thenationonlineng.net/three-robbers-set-ablaze-in-failed-oyo-bank-robbery/amp/

31 year old Chinese man, Zhang Yue has been stuck with a bizarre addiction, he can’t stop drinking liquid detergent. Originally from southwest China’s Chongqing city, Zhang said his addiction started in 2012. He said what initially began with a few sips later turned into an uncontrollable appetite for anything from dishwashing liquids to shampoos. Zhang’s obsession with consuming detergents has gained him an unusual fame but that has come with a cost. His habit, he said, has turned away women, making his love life unstable. Amazingly, medical checks on him has shown that he is healthy despite all the detergents he has consumed. Doctors say he could have a condition called pica, an eating disorder that is characterized by the desire to eat items with little or no nutritional value, including stones, sand, paint, and in this case, detergent. However, the disorder is rarely seen in adult men, and mostly affects children and pregnant women. Although hormonal changes and deficiencies are commonly attributed to explain the cravings, there has been no conclusive evidence to prove this. The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, says President Muhammadu Buhari is determined to bequeath a Nigeria that can provide plentiful opportunities to its people Odigie-Oyegun said this on Friday in Abuja on the occasion of the 77th birthday party organised in honour by the APC’s workers. The chairman appealed to Nigerians to support the efforts of the administration in building a solid foundation for a better tomorrow for all Nigerian youths. According to him, this is the last economic hardship Nigerians will go through after the right structure anchored on sound economic policies is put in place. “God in his wisdom has provided APC to the nation at this crucial time and in his wisdom gave us a man of strong will, iron determination, courage in the person of President Muhammadu Buhari. “ This is the last economic hardship this nation will ever go through. “He has decided that we will never ever again depend upon a single crop, so he is laying a very solid foundation for the take off of this nation such that all resources that God has endowed this nation with whether it is anything. “The Nigeria of tomorrow will be a Nigeria that produces, that can give employment to its youth, will be a nation that can provide plentiful opportunities for its people. “That is the Nigeria that President Muhammadu Buhari is building and my appeal is that we should all see ourselves as participants in this struggle, that we have sacrifices we have to make to ensure we get there,” he said. Going down memory lane, Odigie-Oyegun said the party at the beginning worked under very challenging condition to reach where it is today, He pledged readiness of the party to make life better for all the staff that weathered the storm with it . “I remember when we were just a few staff, when this baby needed rehabilitation, when we had no chairs, when members of the National Working Committee were making sacrifices to prepare for the election that has now become history in the country. “We have set up a committee to look into the working conditions of the staff of the national secretariat headed by the deputy national chairman south who has completed his assignment and we will have reasons to smile in the few months ahead.” He said they knew things were bad with the economy but did not know the extent to which they were bad. Speaking with newsmen afterward, the chairman responding to questions about his youthful look said life was a “lucky dip” and he got lucky. “Most importantly, I don’t do anything that will worry me or that will lead to threats. I have no political enemies. I believe that there is room for everybody, no particular individual is in your way. “My mother used to say don’t do anything that you want to see in the front page of the Daily Times, when it existed. Lead a simple life, try to succeed by trying to be the best, not by pulling anyone down.” He said his sojourn into politics was by accident and he had no regrets whatsoever and he would strive to make his mark. “No regrets joining politics whatsoever. It has been an era of service to the nation. I will do everything I can to influence events so that when time comes I will be on my deathbed with a smile on my face that this great coalition called the APC removed an incumbent government and finally we are now on the road and now addressing those issues that held this nation down.” Source:. http://dailypost.ng/2016/08/13/buhari-will-ensure-last-economic-hardship-nigeria-ever-experience-oyegun/

Popular Nollywood actress, Ireti Doyle, has waded into the incessant rape incidents in the country. The Ondo state-born says there is virtually no day that a rape case is not reported in the news in Nigeria and as such, serial rapists should have their manhood cut off if convicted. She told the Punch, “People tend to think that rape is on the increase but I don’t think so; I think it has always been a part of our society but you are hearing a lot more about it now because people are talking about it. That veil of secrecy has been removed and the more we talk about it, the more we blow the whistle against the offenders. Eventually I think we would get it right. We need to put stronger laws in place and enforce them and justice must be done. “In Nigeria, as in almost everywhere in the world, I do not think that rape cases are handled properly often times. What makes it worse for us in Nigeria is that in advanced countries, they have strict laws and most times, the law is enforced and justice is done. In Nigeria, we have laws in place but are they enforced as they should be? I don’t think so. But I am happy that there is a lot more conversation about it. “When you hear about a law that castrates rapists, you may think it is extreme but when you think of the ripple effect, the damage that rape causes not just to the victims but people around them, you might want to rethink. I think that the punishment should be hard especially for repeat offenders. Maybe if you are a first time offender, the law might give you room for rehabilitation but if you are a repeated offender, they should cut off your manhood,” the actress advocated.
