Nairaland GeneralOgun Private School Owners Protest Over Multiple Levies..(photo) by adehab(op): 6:18pm On Jun 22, 2016
Private school owners in Ogun State on Wednesday protested over alleged multiple levies and charges by the state government.

Scores of the private schools owners under the aegis of National Associations of Proprietors of Private Schools, Ogun chapter, stormed the Nigeria Union of Journalists Secretariat, Oke Ilewo, Abeokuta protesting against the more than 150 per cent increase in the charges for the First School Leaving Certificate examination.
They said it has been increased from N500 to N2,000.

The protesters displayed placards with different inscriptions such as ‘Don’t kill private schools with multiple levies, dues and charges, the economic downturn affects us and the parents too’ ‘Do not destroy our educational system by destroying private schools’, ‘Private schools need government, if not let us be’, and ‘Do not kill our private schools with levies upon levies‘ among others.

The President of the association, Alhaji Rilwan Hassan, who spoke for the proprietors, said the government has also increased the fees for the Basic Education Certificate Examination by 50 per cent from N2,500 to N5,000.

He explained that there was disparity between fees and charges payable by the public and private schools to the state government on these two examinations.

He argued that these were affecting and killing the system of education in the state.

Hassan said that the association had written so many letters to the relevant authorities, including the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, to intervene in the situation but no response.

He said, “We have come to appeal through you and the general public to help appeal to His Excellency, the Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, to give respite over issues affecting us as owners of private schools and the parents who entrust their children in our hands, who are also tax payers.

“We want the government to reverse decisions on charges for BECE, FSLC, signage, tenement rate, renewal fees and multiple taxes.

“The disparity is what we say we don’t want, we are not saying there is no justification for the increment because of stationery, but for it to have been jacked up by 400 per cent, it is quite disheartening. We are not enjoying any benefit as private schools owners.

“We are assisting the government to employ staff into our schools and a lot of us are on loans. It is a social service we are rendering.”

Hassan said pupils from the private schools in the state have been doing well in the West African Examinations Council, where 55 private secondary schools were among the best performed schools, last year.

He said, “We are among the best 1,000 schools in WAEC last year, no single public school in Ogun State in the last WAEC is among the 1,000 and we have 55 private schools from Ogun State, that are among.”

On the issue of mushroom private schools in the state, he said the association had done a documentary on them, which it had submitted to the commissioner for education, for necessary action, but nothing has been done about it.

Reacting to the allegation, the State Commissioner for Education, Modupe Mujota, said the increments were necessary given the current economic reality in the country.

Mujota said the increments were not a routine exercise, adding that they have not been touched in the last four years.

She said, “The intention of the government was not to kill the schools adding that the decision was in line with the school fees being charged by the schools.”

SO THE NLC PRESIDENT IS ALSO LOOKING FOR GOVERNORSHIP TICKET AS THE FORMER NLC PRESIDENT BECAME THE GOVERNOR.

MAKE ALL OF U NA THEY USE NIGERIA CITIZEN THEY PLAY WHAT

BABA GOD IS WATCHING

ebosie11:
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed, national leader of the All Progressives Congress, took the unusual step Friday of intervening in the Nigeria Labour Congress protest by visiting the NLC leaders right in their Labour House in Abuja, to appeal for an end to the strike.

Tinubu, accompanied by some officials of the APC and Governor Rauf Aregbesola, said he came on behalf of his party, the Buhari government to appeal to the labour leaders to end the strike and return to the negotiating table.

In a move designed clearly to massage the ego of the labour leaders, since the strike was largely ignored in many parts of Nigeria, Tinubu urged Labour to employ anger management in resolving the disagreement over the fuel price increase.

Tinubu explained the reason for the fuel price increase and said it was done in the best interest of Nigeria as it would allow investors to come into Nigeria to build refineries.

He contrasted the policy to the step taken by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2012, when he set up SURE-P in 2012. The APC leader said what was sure of the SURE-P was corruption.

He said the Buhari administration would not follow the same path. He urged labour leaders to repose trust in the Buhari administration as it is one of integrity and honesty.

“This President is genuine. This decision was the only one left. Buhari has integrity and a character that is reliable”, Tinubu said.

Speaking further,he said....

“I cannot say we work from a distant, I cannot say I was  not a part of what is happening today. I can only say I noticed the communication gap".

"I cannot say you are the enemies of progress of the country, today we came in to appeal to you, and go back to history, we worked real hard to bringing  Nigeria on a progressive path".

“For me progressive governance is all we care about.
“Mr. President, the former president, our senators are here only to make clear that you are not the enemy and you will never be the enemy of what is progressive".

“Why should we continue, problems after problem, conflict after conflict?”

“Without your support, without your participate we would not have won this election".

In a response, Ayuba thanked Tinubu for his intervention and promised to take the appeal to the affiliates of the NLC. He said the NLC was not opposed to negotiation with government.

Nairaland General***the Federal Government Did Not Remove Any Subsidy*** by adehab(op): 1:25pm On May 17, 2016
[b]THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DID NOT REMOVE SUBSIDY BECAUSE THERE WAS NO SUBSIDY AT #86.5 PUMP PRICE OF FUEL
Before you go to protest against the removal of fuel subsidy by the Federal Government, be informed that the government did not remove any subsidy because there was no subsidy to be removed in the first place. So don't go and protest against what does not exist. Seek information and be informed. This is what the government has done. The government has simply stopped giving foreign exchange to fuel importers and has asked them to source for foreign exchange through secondary sources. Why has the pump price of fuel increased from #86.5 to between #135 and #145? This is specifically as a result of the difference between the official exchange rate and the informal (parallel) market exchange rate. This is the simple mathematics. The official exchange rate is #199 per dollar while the parallel market exchange rate is #320 per dollar. This represents and increase of 37% (320-199/320 100 = 37.8%). This reflected exactly in the new price of petrol as it increased from #86.5 to an average of #140 which is an increase of 38% (140 - 86.5/140 100 = 38%). There may be a gap in the dissemination of information to the public and it is totally regrettable and I am sure it will be taken care of, but I encourage Nigerians to seek the right information. I have always insisted that there was nothing like fuel subsidy and I stand by that. The Federal government cannot continue to be the sole source of foreign exchange for the importation of fuel in the face of falling price of crude resulting in the depletion of our foreign reserve. It is unsustainable and cannot satisfy the domestic consumption of fuel in Nigeria. Nigeria gets foreign currency from the sale of crude and the price of crude has fallen by over 70%. This means that the government no longer has enough dollars to give to fuel importers. A lay man should be able to understand this. With the competition that will set in from the open market, it is expected that the pump price of fuel will naturally crash with time.

In 1966, the first military coup was led by K Nzeogwu who was 29 years and countered by M. Mohammed 28, T. Danjuma 28, I. Babangida 25, J. Garba 23, Sani Abacha 23, and M. Yar'adua 23, and brought into power Y. Gowon 32, Ojukwu 33, Obasanjo 29, and Buhari 24!

Most of the military governors who governed the states under the successive military regimes were under 30 years.

Also, the brief democratic dispensation which interjected the military interregnums also saw some Senators and members of the House of Representatives, in particular, populated by persons under 30!

Under 30's were also not in short supply with appointments - we have examples of MT Mbu who became Nigeria's Foreign Affairs Minister at 23 and Pat Utomi who became a Federal Adviser at 27 and so on and so forth!

Why is it that this age bracket is today still writing JAMB?

Why is it that this age bracket today still 'sagg' their trousers?

Why is it that this age bracket is today still searching for jobs and not yet married?

Why is it that this age bracket is today no longer qualified to even be leaders of youth wings of political parties?

Why is it that this age bracket is today so docile?

Why is this age bracket today incapable of feeding itself?

Why is it that this age bracket is today barred from even aspiring to certain political offices?

Why is it that this age bracket is today incapacitated, unwilling, unable and incapable of asking questions?

Hmmmmm...

For some reason, Ms Onuoha has no understanding of how economics works.

1.She wants subsidy to continue.....when at the moment thanks to low oil prices....we do not have enough revenue....and as a result....we do not have money to pay subsidies.

2.And anyway...subsides are a waste of money. That was explained back in 2012. If Nigerians don't get it...na because they want awoof.

3.If you want to pay N40 for fuel....which Prof David West made clear back then....just that people have chosen to ignore that bit of his sentence....we have to improve refining capacity. Nigeria can refine less than 17 million liters of fuel daily. We need 43 million liters daily...which is why we are importing. Some experts even think we need as much as 70 million liters daily.Ms Onuoha better put pressure on PMB to build those promised three refineries.

4.Finally.....let us stop talking about old men.

The reason why old men like PMB, OBJ even Gowon keep coming back is because Nigerian youth refuse to take an active part in party politics. The old men run around....while the under 40's spend time on their tecno phones...and clubbing.
I dis agree with you.. The youth are ready to rule
Millions of youth are ready to represent individual constituency or state but the problem we have is "All so called leaders does not want to leave the Power for the youth" and even the youth u might have seen in any active part in party politics are either there children, grandchildren and Relatives.

Its all about MKM {Man Know Man}. Even when we youth stand to create a Active party for the Nation,

It is the national and state Executive of the youths that will be Bribe with billions from these old men then loose focus.

In every Political party, there is always a Youth Leader in local, state and national level

Nairaland GeneralFake Army Captain Harasses Policemen For Seizing Motorcycle..(Photo) by adehab(op):
A suspected fake army captain, George Edem, has been arrested in the Ikeja area of Lagos State after he allegedly tried to secure the release of an impounded motorcycle.

PUNCH Metro learnt that Edem, who walked into the office of the Lagos State Taskforce on Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit in Alausa on Tuesday, allegedly harassed policemen on duty and was ushered in to see the task force chairman.

Our correspondent gathered that during interrogation by the task force chairman, SP Yinka Egbeyemi, Edem produced an identity card which was discovered to be fake and he was thereafter arrested.

It was learnt that the suspect, who said he resided at Intelligent Quarters, Nigerian Army Cantonment, Ojo, claimed that he was attached to the cantonment before he was discovered to be an impersonator.

Speaking to the police, Edem said he had been impersonating an army captain for eight years, adding that poverty forced him into the act.

He said, “I collect money from people who have cases with the police and customs officials. I have been doing it for eight years. I have also been to some Divisonal Police Officers in Lagos. I came for the release of an impounded tricycle in the task force office.”

A police source at the task force said, “The fake army captain harassed both policemen and paramilitary officers at the task force office. He demanded to see the chairman as a matter of urgency.

“Nobody suspected him. He was eventually ushered in to see the chairman. It was while he was being questioned that he was found to be an engineer and not a military officer.”

The Public Affairs Officer of the task force, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the arrest.

He added that the matter had been reported to the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni.

He said, “The suspect came for the release of a motorcycle with chassis No MD2A18AZ3FMWSX that was impounded after contravening the state traffic law in the Oshodi area. The suspect has a fake identity card of the Nigerian Army.

“The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, has been briefed about the matter and he directed that Edem be charged to court.”

Politics*** Nigeria Will Be A Great Country *** by adehab(op): 6:59pm On Apr 21, 2016
[b]In recent years, I began collecting data about what people think of other countries. What do Egyptians think of China? What do Danes think of Brazil? What does Ghana think of Nigeria? And so on. By 2012, I had 240 billion data points – the raw entrails of one of the largest social surveys ever conducted. I then took some time out to scrutinize the data and glean why people prefer one country to another. “What I discovered,” Anholt told me in a recent interview, “was that out of all the reasons why people admire other countries, by a wide margin the primary reason was that they felt that that country was a good country.”

By “good country” Anholt does not mean a rich or a beautiful or a technologically advanced or a powerful country, but one that benefits the world. “It’s a stab at measuring what each country on Earth genuinely contributes to the rest of humanity,” Anholt says. “There are hundreds of thousands of indexes that measure the performance of countries in different ways, but this was, as far as I can tell, the first attempt to measure what impact they have outside their own borders.”

Anholt adjusted the measurements to reflect the size of a country’s economy. Otherwise the richest countries would have outranked the rest simply by virtue of their wealth. “I wanted to find out what countries contribute relative to their ability to contribute,” Anholt says. “The fact that Kenya, despite having a very small economy, can rank in the top thirty clearly shows that this isn’t about how rich you are. Being a good country is about engaging productively and collaboratively with other countries. It’s about behaving like a good neighbor.”

While it’s true that the countries lower down on the index tend to be poorer, Anholt says this is because necessity compels them to be somewhat inward-looking. “They are quite understandably focused on their own population, so they’re not contributing an enormous amount to the rest of the world,” he says. “But to be fair, those right at the bottom, in the region of 90 to 125, those are countries that are deliberately harming the planet and the rest of humanity.

My question is What do we Want?
Are our Leaders on the right track?
Instead of focusing on the growth of the nation, They keep on fight each other on Political issues.
When will our Nigeria leaders get thing right..

BusinessAfrica Richest Man Is Now Caught Up In The Panama Paper Scandal by adehab(op): 11:48am On Apr 09, 2016
The head of Africa’s largest cement producer, Aliko Dangote has built his substantial fortune upon solid foundations.

But these could be shaken following the Panama Papers leak, which involved the disclosure of 11.5 million confidential tax documents from Panamanian law firm Mossack Fonseca.

Dangote has become one of several high-profile Nigerians— including Senate President Bukola Saraki and disgraced former Delta state governor James Ibori—to be implicated in the leak, which exposed how the world’s rich and famous use offshore facilities and shell companies to hide their wealth. The use of offshore shell companies is not necessarily illegal but is often a tactic employed to avoid paying tax.

Ranked as Africa’s richest man by Forbes in 2015 and currently worth an estimated $17.3 billion, Dangote—the chief executive of the Dangote Group—has been closely linked to at least four offshore shell companies—and as many as 13 through his family and business associates—according to Nigeria’s Premium Times, a reporting partner of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists, which broke the leak.

According to Premium Times, Dangote along with his half-brother Sayyu Dantata, both bought shares in 2003 in Ovlas S.A., a shell company registered in the Seychelles. A company co-owned by Dangote and Dantata, MRS Oil and Gas Co. Limited, also bought shares in the Seychelles-based company at the same time. The trio ceased to be shareholders in Ovlas S.A. in 2006, according to the leaked Mossack Fonseca files, but it appears that the three simply sold the shares back to themselves. In 2009, Dangote finally ceased to be a shareholder, but apparently sold his shares to Dantata and MRS.

The trio reportedly repeated a similar practice by purchasing shares in another Seychelles-based company, Petrowest S.A., also in 2003, before apparently re-selling the shares to themselves in 2006. In a confusing turn of events, the shareholders filed to change the name of Ovlas S.A. to Petrowest S.A. in 2011. Dangote was also linked to two other shell companies based in Panama—SID Holdings Corp and Chalmers Shipping Inc—and another based in the Seychelles, Paseo Trading Ltd, according to the investigation.

The Dangote Group’s spokesman, Tony Chiejina, has rebuffed any links between the Nigerian billionaire and the companies. “I wish to state categorically that neither Aliko Dangote nor Dangote Industries Ltd has any form of relationship with these alleged four offshore companies [Paseo Trading Ltd, Petrowest S.A., SID Holdings Corp, Chalmers Shipping Inc],” said Chiejina. “The Group has four quoted companies on the Nigerian Stock Exchange and cannot afford to tarnish our reputation or conduct our business in an unethical manner given this profile.”

Despite such denials, however, the alleged links are likely to raise questions for Dangote, whose group is currently undertaking a $14 billion project to build an oil refinery in Lagos that has been touted as the solution to Nigeria’s fuel crisis.

Dangote was born in the northern Nigerian city of Kano and has previously expressed an interest in taking over English football club Arsenal. He is held in high regard in Nigeria and aided the government’s response to the Ebola virus, with his group donating $150 million in 2014 to stop the deadly virus spreading in the West African nation. Dangote has, however, previously faced scrutiny following the Swiss Leaks scandal of February 2015. A leak from HSBC’s Swiss subsidiary revealed that scores of high-profile world figures were operating secretive accounts with the bank to evade tax. Dangote was found to have opened an account with HSBC’s Swiss arm in 2003 and the account was registered to a company located in the British Virgin Islands, though it was never proven that Dangote used the account to evade tax.
