Novak Djokovic won his 15th Grandslam title after the sounding victory over Rafael Nadal at the Rod Laver Arena in the finals of the 2019 Australian Open. Djokovic won dominating in straight sets, 6-3 6-2 6-3. This is Djokovic 7th title in Melbourne - a record, as he past Roger Federer and Roy Emerson. This final happens to be among the one below expectations. Happened in 1999 when Andre Agassi was played out of the lawn by Pete Sampras in Wimbledon. 2008 French Open final saw Rafa Nadal ease past Roger Federer in straight sets. Today, Rafael Nadal was at the wrong end of one such final as Djokovic produced a domineering masterclass and simply blew his Spanish opponent away. Fans expecting another epic between the two titans were disappointed as it turns to be a one-sided match. The marker was set right at the beginning as the Serbian took the first set in less than 30 minutes. Rafael Nadal managed to win just 1 out of the 21 receiving points as he conceded the first set, 6-3. Djokovic was unrelenting and didn't give Rafael the chance to find his feet. He served with precision and broke the Spaniard's serve twice in the 2nd set to win it 6-2. At that point, he had made 4 unforced errors to Rafael's 18. The pressure was telling on the 17-time Grandslam winner and for once, a comeback is not likely. Djokovic went from strength to strength and was so assured that he was generous enough to praise a rare moment of brilliance from his besieged opponent during one of the points. The script was not different for the 3rd set as the World No.1 broke his opponent's serve early and with that his spirit. He capitalized on that break with his precise service game to see the end of the match. Source: https://www.adekkatv.com/2019/01/novak-djokovic-demolishes-rafael-nadal.html |
A total number of 62,000 applicants yesterday sat for qualifying and aptitude test to teach in secondary schools across the 23 local government areas of Kaduna state. Alhaji Ja'faru Sani, the state Commisioner for Education, Science and Technology, said in a statement that “out of the number, the State Government will recruit only 7,600 qualified teachers that will teach in the state’s public secondary schools. “Today in this centre and many other centres across the state, the applicants were writing the aptitude test to be considered for the teaching positions. “We had to do the screening in phases because we earlier envisaged a manageable number but ended up with more than 60,000 applicants seeking to join the teaching service of the state government. “Because of logistics and the need to have a conducive environment for the examination, we decided to stagger the screening exercise, starting with over 30,000 HND, B.Ed., B.sc, Masters and Ph.D holders. “The over 31,000 NCE holders will be invited for the examination at no distant time.” Alhaji Sani further said that “the recruitment was part of the current administration’s efforts to address the problem of teacher quality in public schools.” He noted that the goal of the present administration was to achieve better education service delivery for all by 2030. Once again, I am culling most of the following directly from my newspaper column this week. My head is buzzing…with politics. I am trying to put together something for this week and all I can think of is politics. Politics, the process of electing those that take the major decisions in our lives and shape our world, rules the world. So, it is imperative we all get involved in one form or the other, so as to impact our environment and make a difference to our world. There was a time when I wanted to be Chairman of the Nigeria Football Association. I thought it was a simple process and that merit and a great vision would be the essential requirements. So, I indicated an interest and prepared myself well to contest the elections. The day before the elections, I was invited by one of the more elderly members of the 13-man board appointed, as was the practice then by government, for a private conversation where he told me that most of the board members had been directed by an administrator in the sports ministry to adopt a particular member of the board as the Chairman. I wondered why I was not also invited to the meeting and informed, and I insisted that the laid down process for electing the chairman from amongst us should still take place for record purposes. We went through the process, and it was apparent from the result of the votes that he was right and I was naïve. My vote was the only one I received. Even my best friend who was also a member of the board did not vote for me. A few years down the line I was part of another election process, a convoluted one this time, with electoral guidelines that were deliberately crafted to confuse the electorate and then produce a Chairman pre-determined again by the ministry of sports. I was shockingly disqualified from further participation after winning the South West zonal elections in Ibadan. The reason given was that I was ineligible to conquest because I was not the government nominee and had not been directly involved in football administration for two years prior to the elections. It was preposterous. I was founder The Ambassadors FC,that had been actively participating in the FA Cup in Oyo State since 1983. That made me the most qualified of all participants based on the single criteria for which I was disqualified after winning my zonal elections. Of course, it was a deliberate effort to disallow me from getting to the main elections in Abuja where I could have upturned the applecart. So, I had to be stopped in my zone in Ibadan. The drama of what took place during the election in Ibadan is another story that would remain with me forever, a masterclass of disloyalty and the fragility of Morals in a fight with Money! I almost collapsed when many of my retired-player-colleagues from Shooting Stars FC, who had gone around the South West zone with me canvassing support for my candidacy, suddenly, lined up behind my co-contestant, a woman unknown to football at any level at the time, who (I learned later) had offered them an irresistible financial gratification of fifty thousand naira each to mortgage their conscience and sell their friendship. With the ‘Option A4’ open-ballot process adopted by the sports ministry for the elections, they had accepted the money without realizing that the elections would be conducted by open voting! Till this day, some of those my colleagues are still been haunted by the shame of their open display of treachery and dishonesty that day. I was still undaunted. I had two more attempts at football association elections. I pulled out in Kano from contesting against Ibrahim Galadima when I saw how the system had been completed hijacked by the sports ministry to get rid of the hard-fighting man and to install a preferred candidate of the puppeteer controlling the strings of sports in the country at the time. I was offered to step down from the race for the Chairmanship and to contest instead for the Chairmanship of the League Board. I declined the offers and left the scene of the elections. I counted my losses went straight to Wasimi Orile, in Ogun State, and laid the foundation of an academy, a secondary school that has now become a true and expanding laboratory of learning and research in the combination of sports and education for young children. Surprisingly, I attempted one more time when I thought the field would be free and fair. I had the bitterest lesson of all to learn from the experience. This time I was to be halted in my own State in one of the most shocking and shameful experiences in my life. Having secured the assurances of my State government to back me for the elections, the same State raised another candidate to use the platform initially allocated to me, to vie for the same Chairmanship of the NFA. That would be my last attempt in the politics of Nigerian Football. After that, I raised the ante of my dreams. I wanted to make a point that it was time a Black person became President of the governing body for world football, FIFA, something that had not happened before in the long history of the organization. The football world needed a paradigm shift from the old established and corrupt ways to something new and different….a new kind of leadership and leaders. That my ambition did not leave the tarmac. It was halted prematurely by the competing ambition of a few other Nigerians in power that also saw the same opportunities and legitimately chose other options to fulfill their own ambitions. So, my lofty dreams have been cut short several times, and I have been left in the lurch to clutch at the resultant straws and to lick my wounds. Through it all, I have always counted my successes as stepping stones to something bigger, better and more significant in the future. That future is here. It has been almost three years since my FIFA project. I have been serving education, youth, community, health and sports until less than a year ago when the bells of politics started to toll again in my head. The words of Nelson Mandela started to ring loudly in my ears with a persistent headache that would only abate whenever I reacted to the call that: ‘Sport has the power to change the world’. Definitely, the evidence is everywhere that there is an ongoing global cultural and economic ‘war’ of civilizations between the West and China/South East Asia. It is apparent that after 600 years of been enslaved and used as pawns the Black person is again designed to be left out of the ‘future’ wars just ahead. I have been studying the works and words of some of the great heroes of the Black race through the Centuries of our enslavement. I believe that we stand on the precipice of a seismic, global economic and cultural event, and along with it beckons an opportunity the Black person must seize to make a move to get out of the vortex of poverty, hunger, underdevelopment, disease, disrespect, discrimination and oppression as a result of the way the world order is constructed presently. The Black Race must not try to play science and technological ‘catch up’ with the rest of the competing civilisations through the usually prescribed indices for development in the world, but must identify and utilize cultural and other tools that it has cheaply and in abundance, even now, to create its own new ways to global emancipation, and to earn respect that will make it an equal partner and participant in the evolving new world order. That’s why I am drawn into the politics of Ogun State so passionately, because it will all start there. Believe me, the road to Oke Mosanis a mission that will involve and impact the entire Black race and Africa, and make Ogun State (and Nigeria, by extension) the epicenter of a new Black consciousness and Civilisation in the world. The elements, I am convinced, have taken control. For those who can recall, watch out for the re-enactment of the ‘Miracle of Darman’in 1989 in the unfolding political game in Ogun State in 2019! People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the Nigeria's main opposition Party has said that, it has suspended its election campaigns for 72 hours following the suspension of chief justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen by President Muhammadu Buhari. “we are suspending our campaign for 72 hours,” Uche Secondus, the PDP national Chairman said. “It is our hope that President Buhari will listen to the voice of all lovers of democracy the world over and restore democracy in Nigeria immediately and without qualifications.” The suspended CJN,Onnoghen is facing a six-count charge of non-declaration of assets when he became the chief justice of Nigeria. President Buhari said the allegations against Onnoghen were “grievous enough”. President Buhari said in an address yesterday that “security agencies have since then traced other suspicious transactions running into millions of dollars to the CJN’s personal accounts.” Recall that, it was reported on ADEKKA TV yesterday, about Onnoghen’s suspension which was immediately followed by the swearing in of Ibrahim Tanko Muhammed as the acting chief justice of Nigeria. Secondus was silent on the allegations versus Onnoghen, he further stated that, Buhari’s action was in defiance to the Constitution and an “attack on democracy”. The Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, has expressed confidence that President Muhammadu Buhari will receive a landslide victory in South-West in the February 16 presidential election. Governor Ajimobi said that, Buhari’s all-around impressive achievement throughout the country since coming on board was enough reason for the people to vote for him for a second term. Governor Abiola Ajimobi who happens to be the Oyo South Senatorial Candidate for All Progressives Congress (APC), in the General Election, announced this during a meeting with 67 interest groups in the state, in company with the APC Party Chairman in the State, Chief Akin Oke, and the governorship candidate of APC, Chief Adebayo Adelabu. Among these were Christian and Muslim bodies, Artistes, traders’ associations, youth groups, drivers’ unions, market and food sellers associations and independent broadcasters. Governor Ajimobi said, “Buhari is not a match for other candidates in the presidential race. This election will indicate if Nigerians really want progress or retrogression. You cannot compare a lion with a cat, although they are both in the cat family. “It will be an election between light and darkness; an election between pig and cattle egret. It is an election between integrity and corruption. After 16 years of looting, they have come back like nothing has happened. “They abandoned the most important road in the entire Southwest, if not the country, Lagos-Ibadan expressway for 16 years, Buhari came and started fixing it. He started the light trail rail project along the same axis and it is almost completed. “I trust our people. They are the most sophisticated when it comes to politics, so they have made up their minds. They will vote Buhari and he will record a landslide victory in the Southwest. We will reciprocate these kind gestures. “Our unemployed youths are getting N30,000 monthly under the N-Power programme, the Trader Moni is addressing the needs of the ordinary traders, the school feeding programme is feeding millions of pupils across the country every day. “When we governors could not pay salaries as and when due, he bailed us out on several occasions without discrimination. How can we leave a man with such altruistic gestures and follow those who put us in a mess." He also use the opportunity to woo support for all APC candidates in the coming election, including the party’s governorship candidate, whom he portrayed as the most efficient, effective, capable and brilliant among those jostling to succeed him. It has been discovered with a new study that, simple blood test could predict if a patient will develop Alzheimer's disease up to 16 years before symptoms begin. Through measuring changes in the levels of a protein in the blood, called neurofilament light chain (NfL), researchers believe any rise in levels of the protein could be an early sign of the disease, in accordance with the study published Monday in the journal Nature Medicine. NfL is a "marker in the blood which gives an indication of nerve cell loss in the brain," explained lead researcher Mathias Jucker, professor of cell biology of neurological diseases at the German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases. ''The more neurofilament you have in the blood, the more brain damage you have," he said. There is still no effective treatment for Alzheimer's, but Jucker thinks the new blood test will be "very important for clinical studies." He belief the test will allow researchers to monitor the effectiveness of new treatments prior to the time when people will start to experience the symptoms, by measuring how levels of the protein are affected. "Alzheimer's disease starts at least a decade, maybe even 20 years, before we have any symptoms," said Jucker, who is also a board director at the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research at the University of Tübingen. Presently, their is no test doctors can use to conclusively ascertain whether someone will get Alzheimer's disease and there are a lot of unknowns about its cause. A commonly believed theory is that, the disease is driven by the production and deposition of beta-amyloid plaques between neurons in the brain. WhatsApp, the messaging App which have nothing less than 1.5 billion Users is limiting all its members to forwarding any single message up to five times in an effort to stop the spread of false information on the platform. The policy by the Facebook-owned business had already been introduced in India, six months ago. The move is due to a number of mob lynchings that were blamed on fake reports being spread through WhatsApp service. Previously, Whatsapp users are free to forward messages up to 20 times. This new update to the app's rules was announced yesterday in Jakarta, Indonesia. The firm told the reporters about its decision following "carefully" evaluating the results of its half-year-long test in the country. "The forward limit significantly reduced forwarded messages around the world," Victoria Grand, Vice President for Policy and Communications said. "This will help keep WhatsApp focused on private messaging with close contacts. The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government delegate met Monday evening following the ongoing strike. The meeting began on Monday evening, around 5pm, in attendance is Dr. Chris Ngige, the minister of Labour and Employment as well as a delegation of the striking lecturers. The Strike was embarked upon by the Public Universities Lecturer on November 4, 2018. Earlier on, before the commencement of the meeting, ASUU gave the condition that, to call off the Strike, FG should releases N50 billion to demonstrate its commitment to the revitalisation of the universities. The Academic Staff Union of Universities said that, the strike will continue unless they get satisfactory with their demand on revitalization from the Federal Government. Speaking after the meeting with the FG at the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment which lasted about four hours, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, the ASUU National president, told reporters that the meeting ended with grey areas yet to be resolved. He reported that, “We have not suspended the strike, the discussion will continue at a later date. We are going back to our members for further consultation. FG gave us reaction to our proposals but there were still grey areas that we are trying to sort out", “Before the strike can be suspended, the most critical area that FG must address is revitalization. It is central to our academic work, unless that area is addressed, our members will still have issues. We are not demanding for N50bn, we are saying that the minimum that FG can release to reactivate revitalization fund is N50bn". Dr. Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, said that the FG had made substantial commitment to ASUU demands and will meet the leadership again when they were ready. Dr. Chris further said that, although he had expected a marathon session with ASUU because President Muhammadu Buhari had ordered him to ensure that all issues relating to the strike were resolved, the meeting ended early. His statement goes thus; “We did not take a long time than we anticipated. We have other commitments but the important thing is that we have made substantial progress. We have reached some agreements in seven areas. Most of the issues have been resolved but ASUU will need to consult its members and come with what they think". DIALOGUIST SCRIPT 03 An adage says "If you cannot be a Pen that writes someone joy, then you should be Eraser that cleans someone sorrow". Merely looking at this paradoxical statement, it looks like a joke, but it is not. When you happens to be someone that people seek help and support from, either in monetary or in any other means, try as much as possible to help those people. If you don't have the ability or capacity to help them, but to lead them to where they could get it, my brother, please do so. Because you might even need them also in future, it may not even be you, but your children or relations. Try as much as possible to do Good always. Someone may ask for monetary assistance from you, but in otherwise, you can deem it fit that rendering that assistance to such person is not that helpful to him/her, but the best thing is to empower him/her to have a job. Yes, that will be better. If you can help someone to have or get job, you're helping other while still helping yourself too, because the person you helped will also helps others too, the burden will be off your head little by little, and through this, we'll be gradually developing. This kind of idea is commonly found in Hausa tribe in this country. They use to help themselves wherever they meet. Lets put this in a Practical form, starting from the Rich ones, in your Capacity and Ability, kindly help Five people to be financially independent, then tell each of them to help different five people, I can confidently tell you that through this, the rate of poverty will be eliminated, hardly we could find a beggar among us. If every millionaire and billionaire of our country can do this, I bet it, Nigeria will be Heaven on Earth. However, how could this happen without love. Love encompasses everything. Without love in this country, the idea will be difficult to function. In a nutshell, I implore everyone that is capable of helping people, not to be stingy in sharing their wealth to make our community better, to make Nigeria better entirely. A high court in federal capital territory today, discharged the suit filed by Ladi Adebutu to antagonized the nomination of Buruji Kashamu as the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the gateway State. Senator Buruji Kashamu, is the senator currently representing Ogun East and Adebutu had been at loggerheads over the governorship ticket of the PDP in the state. In the lawsuit, Adebutu requested that, the court should declare him the authentic candidate of the party for the March 2 governorship Election. Ajoke Adepoju, the presiding judge, while delivering the judgement, said that, the case filed by Adebutu cannot be maintained to declare him the governorship candidate of the PDP. Ajoke Adepoju said that, Even though, Adebutu was nominated by the national working committee (NWC) of the party, the primary election where he emerged as candidate was conducted in violation of a subsisting court judgment. Judge Adepoju held that the PDP national working committee acted in bad faith by flouting a subsisting judgment of a federal high court which was delivered by Ibrahim Buba. The judge added that the judgment was binding on the party and must be respected to protect the sanctity of court in the interest of the rule of law. The judge said the national working committee cannot not conduct a valid primary election without the Ogun state chapter of the party until the judgment of the federal high court has been set aside by a higher court. Adepoju dismissed the suit in its entirety, citing the need for sanctity and judgments of courts to be protected by parties or individuals. With the judgment, Senator Kashamu and the candidates that emerged through the primary election which was conducted by the Adebayo Dayo-led faction remain the party’s flag-bearers for the approaching election. Recall that, yesterday,it was reported on Adekka TV, about the call by Senator Kashamu, to his supporters to work with Adebutu in the interest of the party and await the Court judgement. The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council (PDP-PCCO) yesterday, brought to notice over the alleged secret execution of political opponents in Kogi State. The organisation reported that, no fewer than three members of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), were executed on Friday. Austin Okai Usman, the Spokesman of PDP-PCCO in Kogi State in a statement entitled: “Kogi State Is Under Siege”, reported: “Nigerians may recall that January 6 2019, this council uncovered a plot by the outgoing accidental Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Adoza Bello and his agents to roll out an elaborate agenda to roll out calculated violence in the state targeted at members of the opposition". “Not only was this revelation made to the world and selected foreign missions, the council noted that the project will be bankrolled by the state government". “Whereas agents of the government screamed blue murder and employed all the outdated tricks to cover up their plot to endanger Nigeria’s democracy, the events of the last 3 days has clearly validated our intelligence report". “It is for this reason that the attention of the highest echelon of the Nigeria Armed Forces, the Department of State Services and the Nigeria Police Force is drawn to the fact that on the last count, paid agents of the Kogi State Governor, provided with full security and supervised by a member of the cabinet of the outgoing governor, Yahaya Bello have summarily executed three (3) members of the opposition especially the Social Democratic Party (SDP) by gunshot". “We note that this operation lasted for at least 2 hours 3 minutes starting from 1:30am on January 11 2019". “While this ‘point and kill’ operation went on, every access members of the opposition had to security agents were either interrupted or cut off. Members of the opposition who could phone local police formations were ignored as the phone calls rang out". Source: https://www.adekkatv.com/2019/01/pdp-raised-alarm-over-secret-executions.html |
President Emmanuel Macron yesterday kicked off a three-month national debate he hopes can quell the "yellow vest" unrest with a letter to the French in which he promise to listen to new ideas but stuck to his core economic reform agenda. Macron's incentive comes after nine weeks of protests by the "yellow vests" -- which was named after the high-visibility jackets they wear. The disparate anti-government uprising has wreaked mayhem in Paris and French cities, shaken the economy and challenged his authority. "For me, there is no banned issue. We won't agree on everything, which is normal in a democracy. But at least we'll show we're a people which is not afraid of talking, exchanging, debating," this was written by Macron in the letter published by his office. However, President Macron said that, he will remain faithful to his campaign manifesto, and appeared to rule out rolling back some of the pro-business economic reforms, such as scrapping a wealth tax, which have earned him the nickname "president of the rich". The Manchester City Coach, Pep Guardiola reported that, Manchester City “are not going to pay £100m for a holding midfielder” such as Rúben Neves of Wolves or any other similar footballer to provide competition for Fernandinho. City are at home to Wolves in the evening today, with the champions not likely to strengthen in defensive midfield regardless of Guardiola’s wish to add a second specialist in the position. Although, Fernandinho will turn 34 years old by the end of the season, Guardiola reported that, City do not presently have the finance to buy a replacement. When the media put to him that Rúben Neves might be the type required, Guardiola replied that: “He is an excellent player but there are many clubs in the world, many holding midfielders in the world, and most of them can play here. That’s not the point". “Most of them are under contracts. A month ago, I started reading – ‘Rúben Neves, £100m’. That is not going to happen, we are not going to pay £100m for a holding midfielder. Of course, in all departments in the club, we have in every position four or five or six options – depending on age, what we believe and, of course, the price". “The most expensive one was Riyhad [Mahrez, £60m last summer] and he earns far away from what the top teams pay. Our wage bill for the players is eighth or ninth or 10th in Europe, so there are eight or nine clubs where the wages are higher than Manchester City pay". “We try to be stable in everything. When we spent a lot [two summers ago] – it was because the team was old – it was an average 30-31 years old and that’s why we did it. But we cannot do it every season. We have a limit and cannot spend more so that’s why we need to be careful with the players and try next season to see what we can do to improve". Buruji Kasamu, the senator representing Ogun East at the Senate, says he has not withdrawn from the Ogun State governorship election holding on March 2, refuted the earlier media reports. Kasamu reported that, he remained the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State and encouraged his supporters to discountenance the report that he had withdrawn from the race. Speaking with journalists in Lagos yesterday, Kasamu said, “I have never issued any statement that I stepped down for Adebutu. What I said was we should all join hands and work together for the victory of the party. If the court rules that Ladi is the candidate eventually, I will work for him and if the court upholds my victory, I expect him to work for me. But the most important thing is that we should all work together for the victory of the PDP". He further reported that, that was why the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had maintained that he was the governorship candidate of the party in the state. Kasamu said the statement he issued on Wednesday was contorted, adding he did not proclaim that he had withdrawn from the race. The Academic Staff Union of Universities yesterday reported that, the ongoing strike will not be called off unless the Federal Government fully implemented all the offers made to ASUU after their last meeting. ASUU said that,it is usual behavior of the Federal Government to find it difficult to implement ASUU demands, stating that, unless they see actions and evidences of Federal Government commitment, the strike will continue. Prof.Biodun Ogunyemi refuted the claim in Lagos yesterday, that an agreement was already reached with the Federal Government. Read the full statement of ASUU National chairman during the interview in Lagos yesterday with reporters. "Our members said they want to see evidence of satisfactory implementation of all they have proposed before the strike can be called off". “As for the proposal, it can be disaggregated. There are items there that require implementation. If they are setting up a committee on state universities, and they actually do, it is not something we need to agree on. It is about action". “If they have implemented it, it is off the list. If the government says it will pay a shortfall of salaries on a certain date, and the date comes and they release the money, it is also implementation. There is no agreement on the matter". “On the revitalisation fund, we presented to the government that five tranches of N220bn each were outstanding. The government has not said it will release one, even if it is spread over a period of one year. There is no agreement on that. What they are offering is not even up to one tranche". “Last year, they promised to release the fund but they did not till November when the strike began. Long story short, our members are saying they do not want promises again, what they want is action, implementation or disbursement of funds. The government must act in a way to convince the union that agreement has not been set aside; to show that government has not set aside the agreement, they should release one tranche". Prof.Ogunyemi further stated that, ASUU members should await further developments on the strike as Strike continues.
