he Acting National Chairman of the the Peoples Democratic Party, Chief Uche Secondus, has said the party has resolved that its presidential candidate for the 2019 general elections will come from the northern part of the country. He also said the former ruling party would not repeat the “mistakes” it made in 2015. Secondus stated this in Abuja on Wednesday while receiving the report of the PDP Post-Election Review Committee. The committee is chaired by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu. Secondus said the report of the committee would be implemented, but quickly added that the report would be sent to all the caucuses of the party for approval. He said, “We the members of the party and the National Working Committee have revolved that our presidential candidate for 2019 general elections will come from the North. “We won’t make the mistakes we made in the past. We are going to move the party forward and all our members should know that we have resolved to respect the constitution of the party. “We will also abide by zoning and all organs of the party are to be carried along in deciding or debating the reports of this committee.” Secondus called on the members of the ruling party and its leadership, the All Progressives Congress, to take the nation’s interest into their hearts. Presenting the reports of the committee, Ekweremadu urged the party to implement its recommendations. He said it would be wrong for the party to dump the reports as it was done to other reports submitted to the party in the past. He added, “This is not the first time our party has set up a committee, and this is not the first time it will be receiving a report of this magnitude. “The problem, which is also one of the cardinal reasons we found ourselves in this sad state, is that virtually all the reports – great ideas, stringent efforts, and sacrifices by our party men and women – were never implemented, but rather abandoned to gather dust.” Among many key recommendations, the committee proposed a nationwide biometric membership registration to align the party records with modern technology and further boost the integrity of its membership records as a precursor to other reforms that had been recommended. It further recommended that the party should henceforth be self-funding, relying on membership registration and enforcement of dues and levies as its primary sources of income at all levels in line with the PDP Constitution. This, the committee argued, was with a view to ending the prevailing situation where those who “pay the piper dictate the tune”. Ekweremadu said his committee had also recommended that the role of party leader, which has no basis in the constitution of the PDP, should henceforth be discontinued at all levels. This is to strengthen the structure of the party at all levels.
