her, she should not divorce him. For the
unbelieving husband is made holy
because of his wife, and the unbelieving
wife is made holy because of her
husband. Otherwise your children would

her out of his house, or if the latter man
dies, who took her to be his wife, then
her former husband, who sent her away,

shall not bring sin upon the land that the
Lord your God is giving you for an
inheritance.
He who finds a wife finds a good thing
and obtains favor from the Lord.
And if she divorces her husband and
marries another, she commits adultery.”
However, let each one of you love his
wife as himself, and let the wife see that
she respects her husband.

hardness of heart Moses allowed you to
divorce your wives, but from the
beginning it was not so.
But I say to you that everyone who
divorces his wife, except on the ground of
sexual immorality, makes her commit
adultery, and whoever marries a divorced
woman commits adultery.
“It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his
wife, let him give her a certificate of
divorce.’ But I say to you that everyone
who divorces his wife, except on the
ground of sexual immorality, makes her
commit adultery, and whoever marries a
divorced woman commits adultery.
Wives, submit to your own husbands, as
to the Lord. For the husband is the head
of the wife even as Christ is the head of
the church, his body, and is himself its
Savior. Now as the church submits to
Christ, so also wives should submit in
everything to their husbands. Husbands,
love your wives, as Christ loved the
church and gave himself up for her, that
he might sanctify her, having cleansed her

certificate of divorce and to send her

Now when Jesus had finished these
sayings, he went away from Galilee and
entered the region of Judea beyond the
Jordan. And large crowds followed him,
and he healed them there. And Pharisees

“Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any
cause?” He answered, “Have you not read
that he who created them from the
beginning made them male and female,
and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his

Or do you not know, brothers—for I am
speaking to those who know the law—
that the law is binding on a person only as
long as he lives? For a married woman is
bound by law to her husband while he
lives, but if her husband dies she is
released from the law of marriage.
Accordingly, she will be called an
adulteress if she lives with another man
while her husband is alive. But if her
husband dies, she is free from that law,
and if she marries another man she is not
an adulteress.
And Pharisees came up to him and tested
him by asking, “Is it lawful to divorce
one's wife for any cause?” He answered,
“Have you not read that he who created
them from the beginning made them
male and female, and said, ‘Therefore a
man shall leave his father and his mother

The saying is trustworthy: If anyone
aspires to the office of overseer, he
desires a noble task. Therefore an
overseer must be above reproach, the
husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-
controlled, respectable, hospitable, able
to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but
gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of
money. He must manage his own
household well, with all dignity keeping
his children submissive, for if someone
does not know how to manage his own
household, how will he care for God's
church?

They shall not marry a widow or a
divorced woman, but only virgins of the
offspring of the house of Israel, or a
widow who is the widow of a priest.
“Now these are the rules that you shall
set before them. When you buy a Hebrew
slave, he shall serve six years, and in the
seventh he shall go out free, for nothing.
If he comes in single, he shall go out
single; if he comes in married, then his
wife shall go out with him. If his master
gives him a wife and she bears him sons

my master, my wife, and my children; I
will not go out free,’
Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to
be free. Are you free from a wife? Do not

not sinned, and if a betrothed woman
marries, she has not sinned. Yet those
who marry will have worldly troubles, and
I would spare you that.
