A former Soviet Army soldier who went missing in action in 1980 during the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan has been found alive almost 33 years after he was rescued by Afghan tribesmen.

Now living under the name of Sheikh Abdullah and working as a traditional healer in the Shindand district of Herat Province in western Afghanistan, former Soviet soldier Bakhredtin Khakimov was an ethnic Uzbek.

Khakimov was tracked down by a team from Warriors-Internationalists Affairs Committee, a nonprofit, Moscow-based organization that leads the search for the former Soviet Union's MIAs in Afghanistan.

"He received a heavy wound to the head in the course of a battle in (Shandand) district in September 1980 when he was picked up by local residents," the organization said in a statement posted on its website. "He now leads a seminomadic life with the people who sheltered him."

The organization said it made contact with the man two weeks ago and, while he had no identity papers, he was able to positively identify photos of other Soviets who served at the time.

"He could understand Russian a little bit, but spoke it poorly, although he remembers his Uzbek language," the organization said. "The effects of his wounds were clearly manifested: His hand trembles, and there is a visible tic in his shoulder."



The deputy head of the organization, Alexander Lavrentyev, told a news conference on Monday that Khakimov, originally from the city of Samarkand in Uzbekistan, was nursed back to health by a village elder. The elder was an herbal healer who taught him his trade, Lavrentyev said.

"He was just happy he survived," Lavrentyev was reported as saying by Russia's RIA news agency. Lavrentyev met with Khakimov in the city of Herat in late February,

Khakimov, who was found in Afghanistan after 33 years, as a young soldier.

The former soldier -- who married in Afghanistan but is now a childless widower -- was keen to meet his relatives. That's something the committee is working to arrange, Lavrentyev told reporters.

A chief of police in Ghor province, Dilwar Dilawar, told CNN Khakimov converted to Islam in 1993.

Local reports, however, conflict with the Russian version of events.

Local journalist Sharafudin Stanekzai, who spoke with Khakimov, told CNN that Khakimov separated from his unit after stealing a gun and then handed the weapon over to Mujahedeen Islamic guerrillas.

The Warriors-Internationalists Affairs Committee is working to track down 263 Soviet soldiers whose fates are unknown after the bloody nine-year campaign in Afghanistan. So far, it says it has tracked down 29 missing Soviet soldiers.

Lavrentyev said 22 chose to be repatriated to their homes while seven elected to stay in Afghanistan.

About 15,000 of the 600,000 Soviet soldiers who served in the near decade-long war were killed, according to figures cited by RIA from the Soviet General Staff.

Regarded as one of the last Cold War confrontations, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan on Christmas Eve 1979 to protect a Soviet-backed government against rebels armed and trained by Western and Islamic countries.

A 19-year-old boy, Felix Inia and his 16-year-old brother, Stanley are now cooling their heels at the headquarters of the Delta State Police Command, Asaba, for allegedly defiling their six-year-old stepsister, Precious Kankamor. The incident, which eventually led to the death of the victim, occurred at Ogbe-Ijoh community, Warri South Local Government Area of the state. The suspects were said to have had carnal knowledge of the minor by forcefully penetrating her, which led to severe injuries in the victim’s private part.

Besides the injuries sustained after the alleged sexual abuse, little Miss Precious later developed protruding stomach, leading to medical complications that eventually cut short the life of the victim. Investigation revealed that the suspects’ mother got married to the father of the deceased after her first marriage ended with the death of Mr. Inia. The now embattled mother moved into her new marriage with her teenage sons, who unsuspecting, had eyes on little Miss Precious immediately they stepped into their new home.

They allegedly carried out their ignoble mission last month when they were left with the victim at home while others had gone out for the day’s activities. According to a police source, the younger Inia, Stanley, allegedly lured his elder brother, Felix, into the act. “The younger brother said he sold the idea to his elder brother. He (Stanley) assured his brother that there was nothing to be afraid of and that he (Stanley) had been doing it with other children in the area,” the source told Daily Sun. Public Relations Officer of the command, ASP Famous Ajieh, confirmed the arrest of the suspects, adding that they would be charged to court as soon as investigation was concluded.

Ajieh said the command was also investigating four suspects who were arrested during a raid on suspected criminal hideouts in Kwale in which one Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and nine live cartridges were recovered. Besides, Ajieh stated that the command’s special patrol team code-named Dragon 11 also attached to Kwale axis, while on routine patrol, intercepted two men on motorcycle who had in their possession one brownie pistol with tempered breech number. According to him, one of the suspects, Chukwudi Nwafor has admitted ownership of the firearm, which he claimed he bought in Jos, adding, however, that the matter was still under investigation.

With this development, Nigeria appears to lead other countries where the church currently operates.

Founded by Nigerian-born gay, Rev. Rowland Jide Macaulay, House of Rainbow, which came to Nigeria in 2006, is “an inclusive and affirming religious community open and welcome to all people including sexual minorities and marginalised people, a monthly gathering of ‘people of faith’ for ‘prayer and praise’, which focuses on the person’s journey towards reconciliation of sexuality and spirituality.”

Macaulay, a trained lawyer and son of a reverend who owns a massive church in Lagos, is leading the comeback even though he remains in self-imposed exile in London, where sources said he currently enjoys lots of financial sponsorship for the movement.

Unlike in the pre-2008 when the church openly operated at Jakande Estate, Isolo, and Berger in Lagos, Macaulay, who is the backbone of the movement, is not secretive of the meeting places and time of the church in Nigeria, but has instituted a very stringent process to screen prospective members of coming to join the church.

It was learnt that aside Nigeria, the church has two groups each in Ghana and United Kingdom (UK).

“We now have new groups in Malawi and Ghana. There are currently three groups in Nigeria, two each in Ghana and the UK and one each in Malawi, Lesotho and Burundi. All these groups are managed by volunteers,who are appointed through a rigorous ‘Local Leader Application’ process.

“We currently have 12 appointed Local Leaders in 6 countries. Currently we have over 25 outstanding applications for local leaders including, but not limited to the following locations: France, Netherlands, Cote d’Ivoire. This has continued to strengthen the interest and work of House Of Rainbow particularly in Africa,” Macaulay

Leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria in Enugu State, Maj.-Gen. Josef Okoloagu (retd.), on Monday said no fewer than 1,000 Peoples Democratic Party members had defected to the ACN in the state.

Okoloagu stated this at a press briefing in Enugu.

He said the defection would further embolden the ACN to wrest power from the PDP in the 2015 general elections in the state.

According to him, the defection followed the merger of the opposition parties in the state.

The retired Army General said while the opposition parties planned the sacking of the PDP-led government at the federal level on the auspices of the All Progressives Congress, the ACN would root out the PDP at the state level.

He said, "The arrogant PDP in Enugu State has said so many times that there is no opposition party in this state. I did not want to join issues with them until the need arose.

"I want to let the public know that the opposition parties in the state have become even stronger than before.

"After the 2011 general elections, major opposition parties in the state went into a discussion and the outcome of the discussion is that all the opposition parties in this state have collapsed into the ACN.

"We felt that the only way we can contain the arrogance of the PDP is to come together. This new political alignment under the ACN has members of the Congress of Progressives Change, Labour Party and the majority of All Progressives Grand Alliance members."

Okoloagu added, "Interestingly too, thousands of PDP members in Enugu State have also registered as our members. The people I am talking about are even high-profile members. I don't want to mention names now, but you shall soon find out."

He noted that the opposition in the past failed to make any meaningful impact in the state because of the PDP rigging mechanism.

right hip that will require surgery, followed
by a recovery period .
The pop star’s website showed 21 dates
remaining on her “Born This Way Ball” tour
schedule. Fans who have already bought tickets
will receive a refund beginning Thursday.

Tuesday after experiencing difficulties on
Monday during her concert in Montreal. The
singer’s show is high energy with non-stop
dancing. She explained to fans on Twitter
that she’d hurt herself while performing

nights performance I could not walk and still
