Politics / Rivers Re-run Election: Who Wins This Battle Tomorrow Amaechi Or Wike? by adgorwell: 4:53pm On Dec 09, 2016
On Saturday, December 10, 2016 Rivers state citizens will vote those who will occupy the State and National Assembly seats that were declared vacant by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The election is not really a contest between candidates nor a contest of ideas, but a contest between two power centres with well-defined spheres of influence battling for the soul of the state. One force is seeking a return itself to the old order, the other is simply trying to re-assert and perpectuate itself hence leading to an equilibrium.

Simply put, we have or are seeing a contest between two familiar foes in Rivers politics- Rt. Hon Rotimi Amaechi, the state’s immediate past Governor and Chief Nyelsom Wike, the present Governor of the state.

Politics / A New Way Of Fighting Corruption by adgorwell: 5:41pm On Dec 07, 2016
It just occurred to me that there is a new way of fighting corruption in Nigeria. Trust me, you don’t need technology, like former President Jonathan sought to fight it. We also do not need to create more institutions like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) or send a bill to establish an Anti-Corruption Court to the National Assembly. These ways are too cumbersome and expensive!

It takes a look at Nigeria-US from historical perspectives and makes forecasts for the future of the relationship between the two countries in the light of the four issues identified: trade and investments, security, military cooperation and entrenching democracy in Nigeria.

Politics / This Thing We Call Power! by adgorwell: 6:48pm On Sep 16, 2016
Whenever I hear people talk of power, they use it as a child will play with the toy. Power to them means nothing other just occupying political offices or positions. How much about power we know nothing about. Power is one of the most notoriously ambiguous concepts in political science to define yet the most ubiquitous!

Politics / Budget Padding: Who Should Investigate The National Assembly? by adgorwell: 5:38pm On Aug 02, 2016
As to whether the DSS has the power to investigate the issue, Femi Falana said: “Since the padding of the national budget is a straight forward case of economic crime which is not concerned with the internal security of the nation the SSS should not play into the soiled hands of the criminal suspects in the House of Representatives as they may later turn round to challenge the legal validity of any criminal charge arising from a faulty investigation report.” (The Punch, 31 July, 2016).

While we agree with the Human Right Activist that the question of budget padding is not a security issue so must not involve the DSS, we must be conscious of the key words “economic crime” which Falana used. Since the 1999 Constitution appear to be largely silent on who should “investigate” the National Assembly on matters of this nature not covered by “parliamentary immunity” and if we agree that budget padding is an “economic crime” can the agency responsible for prosecuting “economic crime” the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) then be invited to do its job?

Politics / On Pdp's Social Media "Toxic Comments" by adgorwell: 6:27pm On Jul 22, 2016
Like many other human inventions, the internet-especially in the advent of the social media-suffer from avoidable challenges. Social media was used to quash a coup in Turkey. It has been responsible for bringing down governments both elected and unelected.
Noticing the extent of damage social media done to its image, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) recently took to its Twitter account to “apologize” to Nigerians of its past role in spreading “toxic comments” among Nigerians. The statement reads (from its verified handle @PDPNigeria):

“We have noticed, with a growing sense of dismay, the level of toxicity that pervades the political space with respect to discussions on national issues,” the PDP said. “We accept responsibility and apologize for whatever role we have played in reaching this level of toxicity.”

The statement continued: “This toxicity, some of which finds expression in discussions across social media platforms, has reached the level where bridges are being burnt, personal relationships are being strained and an unnecessary tension fills what should ordinarily be patriotic and enlightening conversations on how to move the nation forward…”

On reading this first on The Punch, I had to conclude there must have been a mix up somewhere. I was honestly expecting something like a rebuttal from the party with the traditional claim that its account has been hacked. The news of hackers attacking social media accounts of eminent Nigerians has been frequent in recent times. On at least two occasions, the party has suspended its twitter account. The Wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari has also made a public claim dissociating herself from a controversial tweet calling a sitting Governor a “dog” saying her account had been hacked.

Politics / Turkey Coup And Nigeria's Politics by adgorwell: 6:12pm On Jul 20, 2016
There are striking similarities between Turkey and Nigeria. Both countries have past experiences of military rule. While Turkey can boast of nationalist soldiers like Mustafa Kemal Atatürk who will shun all tribal sentiments and institute strong economic reforms; Nigeria has had to battle with corrupt and power-hungry generals whose only mandate is gratifying their inordinate desires. To buttress this point, there have been several rumours of a possible military coup in Nigeria in recent time. From the sections these are coming, one can see the “patriotism” in those hailing the imaginary coup. Perhaps the media and the opposition need to learn how to and how not to play politics in Nigeria using Turkey example because military coups are no longer fashionable, as the Turkish recent experience clearly show.

Politics / Dino Melaye Is Out Of Order by adgorwell: 8:20am On Jul 16, 2016
I immediately went online to seek confirmation, and alas, Dino did issue the threat. At the point, my empathy for the Senator (if he is not properly so-called) changed to sympathy. Senator Dino Melaye (APC – Kogi West) reportedly said in his remarks about the ongoing forgery trial of the senate rules involving Saraki and Ekweremandu that the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami, must be brought before the Senate to be thoroughly grilled and humiliated for charging the Senate leadership with forgery in court. Melaye reportedly issued threats, including impeaching the President (which he will later deny). The climax of the meeting was when it was Senator Remi Tinubu’s turn to speak. How dare Remi, a woman and a wife for that matter speak where Dino is talking? He is probably used to his wife keeping quiet while he is speaking so Remi’s audacity was too much for Dino to bear. She has to be giving some ‘home trainings’, so must Dino be thinking after he said and I quote “I will beat you up on this floor and nothing will happen…”

Politics / We Need To Scrap The Nigerian Senate by adgorwell: 4:23pm On Jun 09, 2016
Arguably the most criticized institution since the emergence of the Buhari administration has been the National Assembly, specifically, the Senate its upper chamber. A group, Citizens United for Peace and Stability (CUPS), has called on Nigerians to #OccupyNASS . Some more ambitious elements within this group went gone as far as calling for the scrapping of the Senate altogether.

Politics / Who Really Want To Kill Buhari? by adgorwell: 9:04pm On Jun 02, 2016
Earlier this year, the fiery Enugu Catholic priest and Founder, Adoration Ministry, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, alleged that there were plans by unnamed people to assassinate President Muhammadu Buhari. According to the clergyman, many people were plotting to kill the President because of what he described as his campaign against corruption, saying, “I am not a sycophant, but I want to tell you that so far, God is happy and he, who God has blessed, no one can curse. Many people are planning to kill Buhari – there are many plans on how to eliminate his life so that corruption will continue, so that embezzlement will continue.”

When Mbaka made this statement, the so-called NDA that threatened to assassinate Buhari was still in incubation. They were waiting to see whether some of their paymasters, like Sambo Dasuki will be granted a leave to travel abroad for “medical treatments” or granted bail on his present corruption charges. The question some of us ask ourselves is whether Dasuki comes from Niger-Delta that these ones are avenging!

Politics / Dispassionate Look At President's Buhari's One Year In Office by adgorwell: 6:02pm On May 31, 2016
Buhari’s first year in office as a democratically elected president is sure to come under intense reviews like his predecessors, but if he will get “fair” reviews is another matter altogether. In a period where one’s political perspective(s) is largely coloured by one’s religion or ethnic origin, scientific analyses of a presidential administration can be truly challenging.

Before we proceed, let us be quick to admit that this present writer was a volunteer for the Buhari’s campaign in 2015 and has no regret whatsoever on his decision. We are aware some people have stopped reading this article by our frank admission, but unperturbed we remain.

Let us also make it known to those who bother to continue reading our article that we, as much as possible, will take objective look at all the issues involved, our temptation(s) to be biased notwithstanding!

Politics / Why We Must All Oppose The Fuel Price Hike! by adgorwell: 5:42pm On May 19, 2016
If my understanding of the word is still relevant, my commonsense understanding of the term simply means reduction or elimination of government control or regulation in a particular industry, usually enacted to create more competition within the industry. If then it is true that government is deregulating the downstream sector of the economy, we then expect that bodies like the Petroleum Products Prices Regulatory Agency (PPPRA) and related bodies, whose existence would have become redundant would have been abolished by now. The fact that the same body, PPPRA, now fixed the price at N145 per liter of petrol tells me a lot about the so-called deregulation the government is pursuing!

Politics / Why We Must Not Allow Religion To Divide Us! by adgorwell: 6:37pm On May 05, 2016
Instead of worship, what we have is warship. The leader is seen as a reincarnation of “God” or something. The leader tells the followers what to do and they accept without question(s). Only the leader’s interpretation(s) of the Holy Books are acceptable. The rivalry between Sheik Gumi and Sheik el-Zakzaky, both preaching Islam but of different traditions, with the former being Sunni and the latter being Shiite, is legendary. Both men’s supporters are reported to have clashed on several occasions in Kaduna.

One will wonder why anyone will want to fight for God. If God is so big or massive, who are His creatures to fight for Him? I imagine a situation where a school bully beats up my four-year old cousin and comes home to report for me to come to his aid. This is normal because my boy can be powerless to deal with the bully. Let us look at another case where I was slapped by a bus conductor at the commercial motor park only for me to get home to “report” to my four-year old boy to fight for me. That sounds absurd isn’t it? This is the case with anyone “fighting” for God.

Politics / Femi Aribisala, PDP Attack Dog, Must Read This by adgorwell: 9:00am On Apr 24, 2016
It is now over a year since Nigerians made history proving to the world again that peaceful transition was, in fact, possible in Africa. The election having been won and lost, it appears that some people still feels the scars of the pains of defeat as though it happened yesterday. One of such persons is a political commentator, Femi Aribisala.

Notice I used called him a political “commentator”, not an “analyst”, as he wants many of his readers to believe he is. In other to be seen as a being scientific in his write-ups, he sometimes taught us “How to Lose Presidential Elections Four Times” not minding the fact that he will later tell us “Why Buhari Will Never be President of Nigeria”. As funny as the premises on which some of his arguments were based, he had those who based their “analyses” on many of his unscientific conclusions.

Nigeria’s two main political parties, the All Progressives’ Congress (APC) and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have no official views either in their manifestoes or any other document regarding climate change at least during the 2015 presidential campaigns. Politics / If Donald Trump Becomes US President by adgorwell: 8:15pm On Mar 31, 2016
All these notwithstanding, should Donald Trump win come November, then some things are involved. First, like I posted on Twitter some days ago, we should start preparing “boys quarters” in my small village in Kwara to cater for the influx of deportees, many of whom have left us many years ago. Second, and more seriously, the boundaries in American politics would have been shifted by wide margin. And lastly, a Trump win will only strengthen the arguments that there are really no “rules” of engagement as far as politics is concerned making many political theorists to look for new jobs!
