Science/Technology / Young And Self-taught Engineering Whiz From Sierra Leone, Wows MIT Experts by adisalago(m): 2:43pm On Nov 21, 2012

At the age of 13, a boy living in Sierra Leone created batteries and generators using materials he picked up around the house or from trash bins. Now, he’s wowing experts in the U.S.
Kelvin Doe, now 16, became the youngest person in history to be invited to the “Visiting Practitioner’s Program” at MIT, according to CNN.

Doe, a completely self-taught engineer, manages his own fully-staffed community radio station in Sierra Leone where he broadcasts news and plays music under the moniker ‘DJ Focus.’ The radio station is powered by a generator created from a deteriorating voltage stabilizer, which he found in the trash, while a simple antenna lets his neighbourhood listen in.

“They call me DJ Focus because I believe if you focus, you can do an invention perfectly,” Doe said in a video produced by @radical.media for their THNKR YouTube channel.

Among those inventions is a battery that he created to light up homes in his neighbourhood. “The lights will come on once in a week, and the rest of the month, dark,” Doe told interviewers.

It took several attempts before Doe finally had a working prototype for the battery — a combination of soda, acid and metal, wrapped together by tape.

MIT discovered Doe during Innovate Salone, a national high school innovation challenge held in Sierra Leone by an international organization called Global Minimum. Doctoral student David Sengeh recognized his skills right away.

“It’s very inspirational,” Sengeh said in the video. “He created a generator because he needed it.”

Before attending Innovate Salone this year, Doe had never been more than 10 miles from home. With Sengeh’s help, in September he journeyed to New York for the 2012 World Maker Faire, where he sat on a “Meet the Young Makers” panel with four American inventors.

Doe’s fame only promises to grow from here. Soon he will be a resident practitioner with the International Development Initiative at MIT and a guest presenter at Harvard School of Engineering, where he’ll gain even more practical knowledge to help his community.

“Whatever things I’ve learned here, I will share it with my friends, colleagues and loved ones,” Doe said.

Watch the video above from THNKR, which, as part of a biweekly series on young prodigies, details Doe’s incredible story.

This is extremely bad for a nation as big as Nigeria; a nation of more that 150 million people! To think that this is the best federal govt could offer this nation is a big slap on the faces of Nigerians that value quality. But what do you expect when many of our national agencies are run by morons that are usually called 'experts' by the Nigerian media!

Politics / Nigeria: Africa's Failed Asset - Sanusi Lamido Sanusi's Response by adisalago(m): 1:48pm On Feb 09, 2011
Please if you write a silly book,

don't invite Sanusi Lamido Sanusi to make a presentation. ,

I guess Olaniwun Ajayi has learnt from this.

Sanusi faults Olaniwun Ajayi on Northern domination

The Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi,

surprised guests present at the Muson Centre for the launching of the

book of Sir Olaniwun Ajayi at the Muson Centre in Lagos .

The book titled:

" Nigeria, Africa's Failed Asset" attracted many important dignitaries, intellectuals and some governors. The argument by discussants centered on whether or not the colonial masters laid the foundation for the problems Nigeria is currently facing.

Many argued that the British loved the North and that was why it gave more than 50 percent of the National Assembly seats to the North at independence.

Sanusi, however, stole the show when he spoke. His speech was anchored on the plank that the British and Nigerian rulers are responsible for the state of the situation Nigeria finds itself today.

Below is his unedited speech.

"Let me start by saying that I am Fulani (laughter). My grandfather was an Emir and therefore, I represent all that has been talked about this afternoon. Sir Ajayi has written a book. And like all Nigerians of his generation, he has written in the language of his generation.

"My grandfather was a Northerner, I am a Nigerian. The problem with this country is that in 2009, we speak in the language of 1953. Sir Olaniwun can be forgiven for the way he spoke, but I cannot forgive people of my generation speaking in that language.

"Let us go into this issue because there are so many myths that are being bandied around. Before colonialism, there was nothing like Northern Nigeria . Before the Sokoto Jihad, there was nothing like the Sokoto caliphate. The man from Kano regard himself as bakane. The man from Zaria was bazazzage. The man from Katsina was bakatsine. The kingdoms were at war with each other. They were Hausas, they were Muslims, they were killing each other.

"The Yoruba were Ijebu, Owo, Ijesha, Akoko, Egba. When did they become one? When did the North become one? You have the Sokoto Caliphate that brought every person from Adamawa to Sokoto and said it is one kingdom. They now said it was a Muslim North.

"The Colonialists came, put that together and said it is now called the Northern Nigeria .

Do you know what happened? Our grand fathers were able to transform to being Northerners. We have not been able to transform to being Nigerians. The fault is ours.

Tell me, how many governors has South West produced after Awolowo that are role models of leadership? How many governors has the East produced like Nnamdi Azikiwe that can be role models of leadership? How Many governors in the Niger Delta are role models of leadership? Tell me. There is no evidence statistically that any part of this country has produced good leaders.

You talk about Babangida and the economy. Who were the people in charge of the economy during Babangida era? Olu Falae, Kalu Idika Kalu. What state are they from in the North?

"We started the banking reform; the first thing I heard was that in Urobo land, that there will be a curse of the ancestors. I said they (ancestors) would not answer. They said why? I said how many factories did Ibru build in Urobo land? So, why will the ancestors of the Urobo people support her?

"We talk ethnicity when it pleases us. It is hypocrisy. You said elections were rigged in 1959, Obasanjo and Maurice Iwu rigged election in 2007. Was it a Southern thing? It was not. "The problem is: everywhere in this country, there is one Hausa, Ibo, Yoruba and Itshekiri man whose concern is how to get his hands on the pile and how much he can steal.

Whether it is in the military or in the civilian government, they sit down, they eat together. In fact, the constitution says there must be a minister from every state.

"So, anybody that is still preaching that the problem of Nigeria is Yoruba or Hausa or Fulani, he does not love Nigeria . The problem with Nigeria is that a group of people from each and every ethnic tribe is very selfish. The poverty that is found in Maiduguri is even worse than any poverty that you find in any part of the South.

The British came for 60 years and Sir Ajayi talked about few numbers of graduates in the North (two at independence) . What he did not say was that there was a documented policy of the British when they came that the Northerner should not be educated. It was documented. It was British colonial policy. I have the document. I have published articles on it. That if you educate the Northerner you will produce progressive Muslim intellectuals of the type we have in Egypt

and India. So, do not educate them. It was documented. And you say they love us (North).

"I have spent the better part of my life to fight and Dr. (Reuben) Abati knows me. Yes, my grandfather was an Emir. Why was I in the pro-democracy movement fighting for June 12? Is (Moshood) Abiola from Kano ? Why am I a founding director of the Kudirat Initiative for Nigerian Development (KIND)?

"There are good Yoruba people, good Igbo people, good Fulani people, good Nigerians and there are bad people everywhere. That is the truth. "Stop talking about dividing Nigeria because we are not the most populous country in the world. We have all the resources that make it easy to make one united great Nigeria . It is better if we are united than to divide it.

"Every time you talk about division, when you restructure, do you know what will happen? In Delta Area, the people in Warri will say Agbor, you don't have oil. When was the Niger Delta constructed as a political entity? Ten years ago, the Itshekiris were fighting the Urobos. Isn't that what was happening? Now they have become Niger Delta because they have found oil. After, it will be, if you do not have oil in your village then you cannot share our resources.

"There is no country in the world where resources are found in everybody's hamlet. But people have leaders and they said if you have this geography and if we are one state, then we have a responsibility for making sure that the people who belong to this country have a good nature.

"So, why don't you talk about; we don't have infrastructure, we don't have education, we don't have health. We are still talking about Fulani. Is it the Fulani cattle rearer or is anybody saying there is no poverty among the Fulani?", he said.

This is a great message to our generation.

Are we truly ready to develop and unite Nigeria?

This is a good news as some of us that live abroad will finally have a beautifully designed glossy magazine that promotes Nigeria tourism that we can show to our non-Nigerian friends, I recently subscribed for a copy and I cant wait to have it next week. TV/Movies / Which Is Best : ? Nta, Hitv Or Ait? by adisalago(m): 11:34pm On Nov 13, 2009
Best picture = Hitv, Ait Nta
Best sound = Hitv, Ait Nta
Best programming = Hitv, Ait Nta
Best everything = HITV

NTA is officially the most useless TV station have ever seen. For God sake, that station is made up of incompetent and staff with outdated journalism knowledge and ideas. Their engineers know nothing in broadcasting operations. NTA is a disgrace outside Nigeria, How I wish Sky could take them off their platform in UK!
Politics / Re: Nigerian Newspapers Are Waste Of Money by adisalago(m): 11:23pm On Nov 13, 2009
I think good and real journalism is gradually fading in Nigeria and this is largely due to the fact that there's not quality check or control in our media set up. Imagine 99% of our dailies have poor structure/layout and most annoyingly, they are poorly printed. Has anyone noticed the "colour riot" in some of these dailies? Sometimes one will require help form the specsavers to go through just a page! Even the London Metro which is free for everyone is printed with full colour and pictures, compared to some newspapers back home that will require u taking painkillers for headache after reading them. I think they need to be more concerned about quality and not quantity.
Politics / Halliburton And Corruption In Nigeria: What Do You Guys Think? by adisalago(m): 5:59pm On Apr 21, 2009
The recent development as per the bribery allegation of Nigeria's top political officer holders (past & present) by Halliburton has raised some questions about the activities and effectiveness of EFCC amongst the Nigerians both at home and abroad. The allegation which was made at the US court indicted Gen. Obasanjo, Atiku Abubakar, M.D Yusuff, Obaseki and others as the main beneficiaries of the 180m Dollars paid by Halliburton as a bribe so as to be able to be awarded the multi-billion dollars NLNG Plant projects. This is a big slap on the face of Nigeria and the people championing the move to rebrand Nigeria.

No wonder we don't have electricity, good roads, good hospitals and other necessary and most important amenities in Nigeria. Imagine these so-called leaders have been collecting huge amount of money as bribes from multinational corporations, inflate the contract worth and collided with them to evade corporate tax for their own benefits. When are we going to revolt against all these criminals parading themselves as "leaders"?

A rash of private jets amid want

MONEY talks. In Nigeria, it actually shouts.

Especially in the lives and lifestyles of those who have it in abundance. While the economic crisis takes its toll on Nigerians, the taste of Nigerian rich men for luxury is anything but waning. While the stock market is down and people's savings have been wiped out, a few Nigerians are still living life to the fullest, flying around in private jets. Money, indeed talks. While it has said goodbye to mostly poor Nigerians, it is screaming "watch me do wonders" in the pockets of a few.

While the market for many products is shrinking, private jet manufacturers and dealers have found a ready market in Nigeria. Indeed, Bombadier and Hawker Beechcraft Corporation, both jet manufacturers, have never had it so good.

Overflying the Nigerian airspace today are some of the best and, of course, most expensive private jets these companies have on offer.

Ironically, just as there are more commercial airlines today than ever, making commuting easier for all even without having to own a private plane, never has there been as many private jets as there are now.

"Nowhere in Africa, not even in South Africa is there the number of private jets as we have now available," said an aviation expert

And the international community has taken an interest not only in the taste of Nigerians for these private jets but the source of the money for their purchase.

Late last year, a Challenger 500 landed at the Luton Airport in England. Its sole passenger was a former presidential aide renowned for his closeness to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and still wielding considerable influence in the Umaru Musa Yar'Adua administration. That not being his first visit to England in that craft and yet another one which is known to regularly convey his wife and children to any place in the world from their base in South Africa, the British authorities picked him up and questioned him on his business deals and source of his wealth. The investigation indeed, is still going on.

In the last one year, the number of private jets bought by Nigerians has more than doubled.

Specifically, at least five Hawker 900 XP, a luxurious wonder in the air have been bought. Each, according to an official of the Hawker Beechcraft Corporation, cost $14.9 million. Another five 800 XP at the cost of $13 million each have been purchased. Two brand new Hawker 4000, which Dan Keady of Hawker Corporation confirmed, is about $21 million each, are already in Nigeria too. One belongs to a banker and the second one belongs to an oil company.

The Guardian learnt that Femi Otedola, who has just been named by FORBES magazine as one of the world's richest men may have purchased a Challenger Global 5000. This aircraft, with a Rolls Royce engine, has a luxurious seating for 14 passengers and an interior that merits the description "palace in the air." It reportedly costs about $51 million. Aliko Dangote who had preceded him on that list of the world's richest is said to have purchased a Challenger Global Express. Indeed, the Express also with a Rolls Royce engine and manufactured in 2008 was listed for $58 million in December. They are not alone. Bankers, oil industry chieftains, wheelers, dealers and even church leaders like David Oyedepo of Living Faith Church, the late Gabriel Oduyemi of Bethel Church and Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God are in the jet set.

Another rich businessman from the North, reportedly a member of the Dantata trading family, is believed to have his Gulfstrem G550 on the way to join an already ample fleet. This luxury aircraft has a seating capacity for 19 passengers and the seating areas are divided into three, with a separate dinning area. An oil company, is believed to own four Hawker planes while a fifth is due soon.

There are several other rich Nigerians like one Dr. Kashim who has two aircraft, including a Hawker 600 and a Learjet.

Business mogul, Mike Adenuga of Globacom, and another rich young man, a banker reputed to be the richest in the sector, owning the majority of his bank's shares, have already placed orders for Falcon 7X. A purchase contract sighted by The Guardian showed that the total purchase price of this plane is $49.5 million. At the contract signing, one of the buyers paid $10.9 million. Second payment was $2 million, third would be $4 million and fourth payment is $8 million. A fifth payment of $12.2 million will be made six months to delivery, while another $12.4 million represents final payment due at delivery "plus economic price adjustment." Adenuga currently owns a Challenger 604, Same as Oyedepo and Joseph Arumemi-Johnson of Arik Air.

An interesting dimension however to this jet craze is that most of the planes owned by Nigerians are registered in South Africa.

Indeed, an openly-discussed topic in the South African Aviation sector is the number of aircraft registered in that country but belonging to Nigerians and, of course, the source of the money.

"If it is the Nigerian petro-dollars, then the Saudis and the Kuwaitis must be wondering if they know the meaning of the good life, "a South African engineer said.

While unravelling the rationale behind the registration of most of the planes in South Africa and not Nigeria, The Guardian learnt that any plane registered on 5N, call sign for a Nigerian-registered plane, hardly gets good money value back. So, apart from possible concealment of ownership identity, good valuation is also one major reason the planes are registered in South Africa and not in Nigeria.

This is why across the nation's airports and private hangars the registration numbers on the jets are ZS - PPH, ZS - SGV, ZS-B0V, ZS-PTP, ZS-BOT (believed to belong to a former governor from the South West), ZS-S0V, ZS-SAH, ZS-PCT, ZS-PKY and so on. ZS is the call sign of South Africa. ZS-BOV and ZS-SOV are believed to be owned by the same person. Of course, there are some with Nigerian registration numbers like N2208L belonging to a bank or its chief executive and 3B-MGT believed to have been leased by another bank.

But another worry in the aviation circle is that not only are the planes registered in South Africa, the owners ensure that almost all the pilots, technicians, engineers and crew are also from South Africa. "Many of them who had Nigerian crew have sacked them "a source told The Guardian. Why? "Maybe the owners feel more secure with foreign crew. But such a large number of foreigners in our airspace undermine national security, not to mention the unemployment problem it creates for indigenous aviation experts," he said.

In recent times, there have been complaints all over the country about the life-style of chief executives of banks and corporate bodies who own a fairly high proportion of the jets in Nigeria.

The questions being asked especially of publicly quoted companies are: Are the aircraft part of the quoted companies' assets? Who authorised the purchase? The board or the shareholders? And could this luxurious lifestyle be a contributing factor to the plunge in the value of people's investments? Would it not be necessary to cut costs, win investors' confidence by cutting down on such things as private jets?

"When you add the cost of all these jets to the cost of their daily maintenance, you are likely to get enough to boost the nation's comatose manufacturing sector or agriculture and generate employment," said Toyin Sonola, an international lawyer and economist.

But the argument of some of the jet owners is that the aircraft is a business tool. "It is not necessarily a status symbol or evidence of ostentatious living, "said. "If you are in our kind of business, with a busy schedule across the world, you would recognise the need for the jet."

This notwithstanding, not a few Nigerians believe that the billions of naira humming in the airspace could be put to better use on ground in agriculture and infrastructural development.

Why cant the Nollywood use pacesetter series to do their movies instead of the useless storyline they re now using?
