I'm not saying God didn't promise them. The bone of contention here is that the land didn't belong to the Israelites first. Abraham moved there won't lot and that was how isaac too got settled there and they had Jacob and Esau. Where's Ur? From where did they go down into slavery in Egypt. They didn't settle in Egypt, God punished Israel for their sins by bringing famine upon their land, Joseph was already sold by his brothers into slavery there, when famine came he was already a Governor in Egypt. Joseph and all his brothers died in Egypt, along with the Pharaoh of their time. Canaan is actually originally not theirs but God gave it to them, when they came back from slavery led by Moses, they fought wars and claimed Canaan and a lot of other land. Read Joshua 13 an you'll see that even the lands of Lebanon, Jordan, Sinai part of Egypt, Damascus in Syria all was given to Israel. God asked them to kill everything there and claim the land. So Israel never had any settlement in Egypt, they only went there for food, then due to their evil ways slavery before they eventually came out. Egypt to Israel by foot is just forty days but they spent 40 years in the forest of Sinai due to their unbelief and complains.
