Politics / Leaving The Fate Of Elections In The Hands Of Military, unconstitutional – APC by adonisNEW(m): 7:21pm On Feb 21, 2015
The All Progressives Congress Presidential
Campaign Organisation (APCPCO) has described
the idea of having military chiefs determine when
elections will hold as a mockery of democracy.
The APCPCO said this, Friday, in Abuja,
following Wednesday’s assertion to the Senate by
the chairman of the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru
Jega, that service chiefs would have to ratify the
March 28 date for the presidential election.
In a statement by the organisation’s Director,
Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, it
called on INEC to take cognisance of the courts’
ruling on the role of the military in elections and
the military’s own commitment of its readiness to
deploy troops for the 2015 elections.
“The idea of placing the fate of democracy in the
hands of the military is not only alien to the
Nigerian constitution; extant judicial
pronouncements have clearly stipulated that the
military has no duty to play in the conduct of
elections.
“We are not comfortable with any attempt to draft
the military into election function and are
reassured by the declaration by President
Jonathan that the elections would hold as
scheduled by INEC on March 28 and April 11.
“We have carefully studied positions made by the
INEC chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, on the
floor of the Senate on Wednesday and we want to
put it on record that we are not in any way
comfortable with the idea that service chiefs will
determine whether the March 28 date of the
presidential election is feasible or not.
“The concepts of democracy and the military are
never complementary, and to say that the military
will determine when an election will hold is
antithetical to the very idea of democracy. It is
akin to a coup against the people of Nigeria to
subject the fate of our democracy in the hands of
a few military service chiefs.
“For the avoidance of any doubts, the APC
presidential campaign organisation will not accept
any attempt to subvert the electoral processes of
democracy in the country.
“The Nigerian constitution is very clear about
how the electoral processes in the country should
be run and there is no single clause of the
constitution that makes the service chiefs to
preside over the conduct of elections.
“Furthermore, there are extant judicial
pronouncements specifically at two Courts of
Appeal, the recent being that on the Ekiti
governorship election that bars the military from
undertaking any role whatsoever in the conduct of
elections in the country. These are in addition to
a similar pronouncement by the Supreme Court.
“The only role that the constitution assigns to the
military is to protect the territorial integrity of the
country and not to determine if and when an
election should hold.
“As far as we are concerned at the APC
presidential campaign organisation, we are ready
for the elections on March 28 and April 11, and
INEC is ready as confirmed by Professor Jega
during the plenary of the Senate and Nigerians
are also ready for the election,” the statement
read in part.

Politics / NIS Urges Public To Disregard Money-for-job Offers by adonisNEW(m): 6:38pm On Feb 21, 2015
Mr David Parradang, the Comptroller-

urged Nigerians seeking employment into the service

saying they are scams.
This is contained in a statement signed by Mr

Abuja on Saturday.
The statement said that many criminal elements
were currently using fake websites and social media

Health / 9 Simple Ways To Prevent Cancer by adonisNEW(m): 7:42am On Feb 21, 2015
Well, if you have a healthy lifestyle, chances
are you probably won’t get the dreaded
cancer!
This is because “As many as 70% of known
causes of cancers are avoidable and related to
lifestyle,” says Thomas A. Sellers, PhD,
associate director for cancer prevention and
control at Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa.
Diet, exercise, and avoidance of tobacco
products are, of course, some of the first
precautions to be taken, but recent research
has uncovered many small, surprising ways
you can weave even more disease prevention
into your everyday life.
Here are a few things you can do to prevent
the chances of cancer:
1. Filter your tap water
When you filter your water, your chances of
being opened to chemicals that are very
dangerous to your hormones are very low. A
report from the President’s Cancer Panel on
how to reduce this exposure suggests that
home-filtered tap water is a safer than
bottled water, whose quality often is not
higher—and in some cases is worse. Always
store your water in stainless steel or glass to
avoid chemical contaminants that can
percolate from plastic bottles.
2. Stop topping your Car tank
the President’s Cancer Panel has mace it
known that pumping one last squirt of gas
into your car after the nozzle clicks off can
spill fuel and foil the pump’s vapor recovery
system, designed to keep toxic chemicals such
as cancer-causing benzene out of the air,
where they can come in contact with your
skin or get into your lungs.
3. Marinate meat first
Always allow your processed, charred, and
well-done meats to get absorbed in a sauce or
its flavoring. This is because the meats can
contain cancer-causing heterocyclic amines,
which form when meat is cooked at a very
high temperature. Note that the fact that a
meat is burnt does not mean it is totally
cooked. If possible, cut down on grilled meat,
but if not, make sure the meats are well-
seasoned before you proceed to cook them.
4. Caffeinated Cofees every day Goes a long
way
It has been made known that drinking 5 or
more cups of caffeinated coffee a day has a
40% decrease the risk of brain cancer,
compared to those who drank less. A 5-cup-
a-day coffee habit reduces risks of oral and
throat cancer almost as much.
5. Water down your risk
Drinking plenty of water and other liquids
may reduce the risk of bladder cancer by
diluting the concentration of cancer-causing
agents in urine and helping to flush them
through the bladder faster. Drink at least 8
cups of liquid a day, suggests the American
Cancer Society.
6. Burn off your risk
Moderate exercise such as walking 2 hours a
week cuts risk of breast cancer 18%. Regular
workouts may lower your risks by helping
you burn fat, which otherwise produces its
own estrogen, a known contributor to breast
cancer.
7. Head off cell phone risks
Always use earphones when you are on a
long call. Do not take a long call with your
ears stuck to your phone. This increases
Cancer risks. Use your cell phone only for
short calls or texts, or use a hands-free device
that keeps the phone—and the radio
frequency energy it emits—away from your
head.
8. Wear colors of clothes that can ‘prevent’
cancer
Choosing your outdoor outfit wisely may help
protect against skin cancer, say Spanish
scientists. In their research, blue and red
fabrics offered significantly better protection
against the sun’s UV rays than white and
yellow ones did. Also never forget to leave
your home without your hat.
9. Increase your calcium intake
Milk’s main claim to fame may also help
protect you from colon cancer. Those who
took calcium faithfully for 4 years had a 36%
reduction in the development of new
precancerous colon polyps 5 years after the
study had ended, revealed Dartmouth Medical
School researchers. (They tracked 822 people
who took either 1,200 mg of calcium every
day or a placebo.) Though the study was not
on milk itself, you can get the same amount of
calcium in three 8-ounce glasses of fat-free
milk, along with an 8-ounce serving of yogurt
or a 2- to 3-ounce serving of low-fat cheese
daily.

Many years ago a reputable doctor as LUTH warned me about things that I should and should not eat. Cold water was one of the things he told me is not good for health.
This counsel is important, the earlier we heed to them the better results we'd get.

Health / Dangers Of Drinking Cold Water by adonisNEW(m): 4:13pm On Feb 20, 2015
We all agree that nothing beats the sensation you get when you down a bottle of cold water or soda when you are hot. That chilling and refreshing sensation could akin to seeing a river in a desert.

As rewarding as cold water can be, in hot weathers like ours, experts say that it comes with serious health consequences. They warn that one may need to hands off drinking cold water regularly due to its negative impact on the heart and the digestive system.

Consultant nutritionist, Dr. Tosin Akinsanya, says even though the body cannot have too much of water, it complains when it has too much of cold water. According to the food and healthy living expert, cold water is at a temperature that contradicts the overall temperature within the body system.

Akinsanya says that normal body temperature of the body is between 34 and 37 oC while that of cold water is usually between zero and two degrees Celsius and this sudden change in temperature levels, which usually happens when we drink cold water, shocks the body, leading to chronic diseases in those who drink it over time.

“The body is made up of 70 per cent of warm water. Water is the most important fluid in the body because it is the medium blood uses. It is the medium which circulates nutrients around the body. If the 30 per cent we drink is against the normal temperature of the body, we see how hard it is for the body to make use of it. Cold water causes distress in the tissues and blood vessels.

“The body has to warm up the cold water you drink every time to an acceptable temperature before it can take it up for digestion, nutrient and blood circulation. That is why we advise people not, take drugs with cold water. The drugs will not digest on time; it means you won’t get the best of the drugs because the water did not dissolve on time.”

Family health physician and author of Ten Habits To Drop Right Now, Dr. Vasant Lad, adds that drinking cold water after a meal has adverse effects on the digestive system. Lad also warns against drinking cold water immediately before a meal.

For Dr. Lucia John, a major reason why we should ditch cold water for tepid or warm one is its effect on the heart. According to the healthy living expert, the heart labours more to restore blood circulation when we drink cold water that is not compatible with the body’s temperature.

She says, “When we drink cold water, juice, or any cold fluids, we create the basis for chronic heart diseases. Cold water has a clotting effect on the blood and other fluids in the body making it difficult for it to circulate.

“A body that cannot circulate its blood is like an uninviting swimming pool in which moss and bacteria grow. The blood may be thick, unable to flow properly to the extremities of the body, the hands and feet begin to feel numb and hurt, the toes begin to hurt, and the toenails lose their shine and may begin to decay. The heart labours to pump the blood throughout the body, and the lungs fight to keep up. The legs may swell and become dark, when blood cannot efficiently pump back up to the heart.

“When the blood is free from toxins and flowing freely and properly, we can then liken the blood to an inviting swimming pool, clear and clean. It generates happiness and perfect health, energy and creativity. This individual contributes maximum to the health and wellbeing of others in an innocent, natural way.”

Scientists have also solved the mystery behind the instantaneous headache brought on by a sip of an ice-cold drink.

According to the neurologists who analysed the result of a study, which involved 5,000 participants over a period of five years, cold water is not friendly to some sections of the brain.

The researchers found that sipping it causes an abrupt increase in blood flow to a major artery in the brain that is then followed by the familiar headache-like. The experts warn that over time this effect may shrink some receptors in the brain.

Knowing all this, we have a responsibility to put into our bodies, only drinks and foods that will enhance its proper functioning.

Akinsanya gives a final advice on the need to take regularly water at a normal temperature.

“The brain is fairly sensitive to temperature change, that is why it freezes when you drink cold water at first. This continuous seizure is not good for it. The brain is one of the relatively important organs in the body, and it needs to be working all the time. We should avoid anything that will make it freeze,” he adds.

To know the right temperature of water to drink, Akinsanya says, “Put one finger in your mouth and close it. The temperature of what you feel is the temperature of water or food that you eat most times. That is what the body is used to and that is what you should give it.”

Health / Scietists Say, Sugar Is Slowly Killingus by adonisNEW(m): 4:03pm On Feb 20, 2015
All of us like sweets – it’s a constant. But who could
thought that a pure pleasure is addictive and slowly
killing us all, according to scientists.
Scietists believe that our decline in health (obesity,
metabolic syndrome, heart diseases, diabetes, cancer)
over the past few decades is directly connected with
global increase in ingestion of fructose, sucrose,
HFCS and other substances.
Sugar is a sweet drug
Dr Lustic claims that sugar is an addictive toxin that
damages public health to the point that we now need
government intervention. It’s addictive, stimulating as
it does the release of feel-good hormone dopamine –
and the food industry knows it.
Manufactures benefit from people’s health
Food manufacturers pump it into everything from
‘low fat’ yoghurt to ready meals and breakfast cereal.
They do this to make food taste nicer. What is even
more bad is that such foods tend to have all the fibre
stripped out, and fibre can help to slow digestion,
regulate appetite, and reduce fat storage.
Damaging impacts on the body
Studies illustrate that large intakes of refined sugar
cause huge spikes in insulin which promote fat
storage. Over a period of time, this can lead to
insulin resistance and leptin resistance – leptin is the
hormone that sends signals to decrease your appetite.
Than means your body becomes more and more
inclined to store fat, whilst you remain hungry. But
that does not mean you should completely cut sugar
out of your diet. Just try to control the amount of
sweets you consume (don’t forget about other
sources of hidden sugars such as cereals, flavored
yogurts, salad dressing, ketchup etc.) and minimize it.
Be healthy, be strong!

Politics / Top 10 Jonathan's Electoral Promises by adonisNEW(m): 7:12pm On Feb 19, 2015
Few weeks are left before the
presidential elections in Nigeria. And it is a
period for candidates to assure Nigerians that
they deserve this position.
Incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan is
not an exclusion. Jonathan is in the limelight,
as his administration has been both criticized
and praised for performance in the office.
Still, what should Nigerians expect from from
the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and GEJ’s
second term? Specifically, what did President
Jonathan promise in the course of his
campaign?
1. To uncover failures of ex-leaders
Just at the very start, at the inauguration of
the Goodluck/Sambo 2015 Presidential
Campaign Organisation (PCO) , Jonathan
vowed to expose the failings of Nigeria’s
former leaders, and reinstate his
administration’s commitment to the national
interests.
“When we start campaigns, we will confront
them with what we have done as a
government, we will tell them what they did
not do when they were heads of state. Some
people want to still keep these children as shoe
cleaners, we must lift them up. Our children
should not be used as cannon folders. They
should be allowed to move forward to be
governors like us.”
2. To strengthen democracy
During the widely publicized Lagos campaign,
Jonathan promised to “dialogue” with
Nigerians, thus insisting that he is focused on
advancing democratic principles in Nigeria.
And to continue fighting corruption, which is
called by critics as one of the worst sins of
Jonathan’s administration.
“We are building institutions to fight
corruption.”
3. To rely on the youth
Same Lagos rally. Jonathan praises young
Nigerians adding that they will take the
country “to the moon”. According to the
President, it is time to give way to the
younger generation.
4. To keep Nigeria intact
Mid January the National Security Adviser
and Special Adviser to President Jonathan on
inter-party affairs held a Sensitization
Workshop on Non-Violence in Abuja.
GEJ dismissed one of the most popular pre-
election assertions that Nigeria will break up
after the polls.
Hardly a promise, but more like a non-
arguable assurance that the people should not
fear the historical event. At least, President
Jonathan seems to be confident that the base
created by his administration is steady to
avoid cracks.
“Nigeria will not end.”
5. To ensure completion of the started
projects
Country’s leader paid an unscheduled visit
to to the site of the second Niger bridge
project at the Onitsha-Asaba axis .
Jonathan explained that it is important for
him to follow the progress with such big
projects. Jonathan felt special responsibility
after hearing rumours that things were not
being done properly.
“I decided that I must visit the site of the
second Niger Bridge to know the level of work
there because some people have been saying all
sorts of things, so I said I must visit the site
before coming to pay courtesy call on His
Majesty. Work is in progress on the project.”
6. To improve healthcare services
It was the success of dealing with Ebola that
added credibility to this promise. Nigeria
became a good example of the African
country that had managed to contain the
deadly virus spread.
GEJ also attributed increase in life expectancy
to the performance of his administration and
said he would continue improving the level of
living.
“And the government I head will not rest on
its oars in improving all our health indices to
make sure that Nigerians not only live longer
lives, but that we live better quality lives.”
7. To bring Boko Haram to justice
Speaking during his his New Year nationwide
broadcast GEJ touched upon one of the most
painful issues for the nation: insurgency, that
has claimed thousands of lives.
“We will bring justice to the savage terrorists
known as Boko Haram. They will be defeated.”
8. To rescue Chibok girls
Not less painful matter of the school girls
abduction during April 14, 2014, raid in
Borno.
In the course of his presidential campaign in
the state capital Maiduguri, Jonathan
promised that the children would be soon
reunited with their families.
“Whatever it takes to do this and to ensure the
return of the Chibok girls we will do. “
9. To hand over office
The Presidential Media Chat was held
February 11 , after the announced by the
Independent National Electoral Commission
(INEC) about the elections postponement. The
scandalous decision generated many
reactions, with some alleging that Jonathan
plotted to stay longer in the office.
However, the President insisted that he was
not afraid to lose.
“If the elections are conducted and I lose, of
course, another president would be sworn in.”
10. To develop railway links
In one of his Facebook posts, President
Jonathan disclosed his further plans, if he gets
re-elected:
“Our plan, which we intend to bring to
fruition with your support, is to link every
commercial and administrative capital in
Nigeria by rail thereby bringing our people
closer. We must continue to strengthen the
bond of our union.”
Only time will show who will emerge the
winner of the forthcoming elections and if
Goodluck Jonathan will fulfill his electoral
promises, if chosen by Nigerians on March
28. Nigeria will decide, very soon!
