Politics / Naira Falls Most In 5 Years To 187 by adrelanine: 7:43am On Dec 18, 2014
The naira fell by four per cent against the dollar to 187.05 at
the interbank foreign exchange market on Wednesday. This is
the highest fall in five years on a closing basis, according to
analysts.
Foreign exchange market dealers linked the development to
the Central Bank of Nigeria’s announcement that its
Wednesday’s auction at the Retail Dutch Auction System
window was the last for the year.
It was learnt that traders and importers, who could not
access the RDAS window, rushed to the interbank forex
market to place their demand.
This, dealers said, led to huge demand for the greenback at
the interbank market, forcing the interbank rate to close at
187.05, down from 180.50 on Tuesday.
The CBN, however, said the official window of the foreign-
exchange auctions would reopen on January 5, 2015.
Analysts said the central bank might need to defend the naira
at the interbank market regularly till the end of the year to
minimise pressure on the naira.
“Banks may start selling their stock of dollars at high premium
since the greenback is no longer available at the RDAS
window till next year,” the Head, Investment Research,
Afrinvest, a research and business advisory firm, Mr. Ayodeji
Ebo, said.
“The CBN will need to keep intervening at the interbank
market to keep the naira-dollar exchange rate stable for that
period,” he added.
A currency strategist at Ecobank Nigeria, Mr. Kunle Ezun, said,
“If the rate remains at this level tomorrow, we expect the
central bank to intervene in the interbank market with sales of
dollars.”
Meanwhile, the Brent crude oil price closed at $62.36 a barrel
on Wednesday.

Politics / FG To Privatise Railways, inland Waterways ,6 Others By 2015 by adrelanine: 7:28am On Dec 18, 2014
Mr. Benjamin Dikki, the Director General of the bureau,
disclosed this during the end year workshop of the Commerce
and Industry Correspondence Association of Nigeria (CICAN)
in Lagos, saying “Government is riding on the success story of
the previously privatised Public Enterprises, PEs, such as
banking, power, telecom, marine, steel sectors of the economy,
etc.
According to him “Today, the banking and finance sector is
the most developed sector in Nigeria, efficiently and effectively
responsible for implementing all government’s economic and
financial policies under the regulation of the Central Bank of
Nigeria, CBN
‘The reform of the telecom sector remains the most
successful in terms of its impact on the economy. For
example, Nigeria’s tele-density has been raised from 450,000
telephone lines in 2001 to over 134.5 million as at September,
2014; today, telecom contributions to the GDP is now 8.53 per
cent , compared to less than 3 percent in 2001.”
Still stressing on the benefits of the reforms and privatisation,
he said “Eleme Petrochemical Company has been revitalised
and producing at over 99 percent capacity and has been
consistently paying over N4, 000.00 as dividend per share.
Cement companies have been revived, expanded and made
profitable, etc.”
Dikki, stated that to sustain the gains of past reforms and
privatisation and enhance the enabling environment for private
capital participation in the Nigerian economy, BPE has
prepared eight critical bills targeted for passage into law.
The bills are roads authority bill, railway bill, port and habour
bill, inland water ways bills; Roads fund bill; National
transport commission bill, federal competition and consumer
protection bill as well as postal bill.
Additionally, Dikki said that besides these bills, the bureau is
working with the relevant ministries to reform Sports, Tourism,
Health and Housing sectors of the country by reviewing the
policy, legal and regulatory frameworks for these sectors.
In her presentation, Dr. Gloria Elemo Director General, Federal
Institute of Research Oshodi (FIIRO, said that research and
development are a very potent benefit of research to economic
development is the transformation substitution
industrialization to export oriented industrialisation.
According to Elemo, it is on record that whereas Research and
Development, R& D investments in most European Union, EU
and some Asian countries lies between 1.5 percent and three
percent of the GDP, most developing countries invest much
less than one percent of GDP in R& D accounting for a meager
0.11 percent of GDP. The R& D investments in Nigeria only
accounts for 0.01 percent of global expenditure on R& D.
Consequently, Nigeria ranked 94 out of 134 nations in the
global competitiveness index in 2010 and has no university
ranked in the world’s top 500.

Crime / I Killed My Boss Because I Needed 150,000 Naira For Dubai Trip-motor Boy by adrelanine: 6:55am On Dec 15, 2014
A look at 32 year-old Sani Saidu , will never pass him for a betrayer, let alone a killer , owing to his quiet disposition and soft wayof speaking. But his disposition has only proved to be deceptive after all , as he is currently cooling his heels at the Lagos State Criminal Investigations Department,SCID, Yaba , Lagos, over a case of alleged murder. The Gombe state born suspect allegedly stabbed one Mr Shittu Aremu, driver of a truck to death while accompanying him to Port Harcourt, Rivers state, destination of the 40,000 litre of petroleum product .

The late Aremu whose age was put around56 years, was a driver to S.K Transport Service Nigeria Limited . He reportedly loaded the truck with plate number AGL 368 XA with aviation fuel worth N5.5 million and consequently left Lagos for Port Harcourt on November 13, 2014, to discharge the product.

But before leaving Lagos State, he was said to have invited Saidu to work with himas his motor boy, with a promise to pay him an undisclosed amount at the end of the trip. But little did he realize that the invitation would end his life.

The first sign that signalled an unpalatable situation for the truck driver, followed difficulty by his employee to reach him on his mobile phone, two days after he embarked on the journey.

Further checks from the tracking device on the truck reportedly showed that the truck had been diverted from its original route to somewhere around Mutum Biu, in Taraba state.

Suspecting that the driver had a sinister motive up his sleeve ,the company reportedly lodged a complaint at the State Criminal Investigation Department SCID, Yaba, where detectives swung into action by travelling to Taraba state. Fortunately for them, the truck was recovered at the Taraba state Police Command, with only Saidu, the motorboy.

l stabbed him, threw him out of the truck Preliminary investigation as gathered , revealed that Saidu allegedly murdered the truck driver before diverting the truck to the northern part of the country.

In this interview, Saidu gave a graphic description of how he stabbed his master with a knife and threw him out of the truck, before taking over the steering..

Asked what made him carry out such dastardly act, Saidu replied : “ I killed Mr Aremu because I wanted to sell the aviation fuel and use the money to travel to Dubai on a business trip”Narrating how he snuffed life out of Aremuwhom he fondly called baba Oyo, , Saidu said: “ A day after we left Lagos, at about 6pm, the company called baba Oyo and instructed him to park at Umunede, Delta state for security reason and that he should proceed on the journey the following day.

While there , I bought a knife without him knowing and tied it with a rope on my leg. Very early the third day, baba Oyo started the ignition to continue the journey. As he was about to move, I told him that one of the tyres had developed a fault. I came out of the vehicle and pretended to be checking the tyres. I went to his side of the truck, bent down as if checking the tyres and in the process, I brought out my knife. But as I raised my hand to stab him, he held my hand and we started struggling, in the process of which the knife cut me on the index finger. I succeeded in stabbing him first on the lap and blood started gushing out. Again, I stabbed him again in the stomach, leaving the knife in there. By then he was too weak to shout.

Thereafter, I pushed him out of the vehicle and mounted the driver’s seat and zoomed off.

Diverts truck to the north

My intention was to take the aviation fuel to Taraba state and sell it at the black market. When I got to Adamawa state, I sold four drums , at the rate of N28,000 perdrum. On reaching Katsina Ala, the truck developed a fault and I ended up spendingN57,000 to fix it. I continued the journey but on reaching Mutum Biu, I was stopped by some soldiers who were on a joint operation with the Police, at a check point. They demanded for the way bill and I showed them.

But one of the policemen asked where the plate number was and I brought it out from where I kept it. I had earlier removed it because the company’s number was inscribed on it. When the policemen dialled the telephone number, they discovered that the vehicle was supposed to be heading for Port Harcourt. When they asked what it was doing at Taraba, I could not provide a ready answer and I was subsequently apprehended.

”I wanted to raise 150,000The father of five whose family resides in Adamawa state further disclosed that “ I did what I did in order to raise N150,000 fora ticket to Dubai. A friend of mine who lives in Kano usually travels to Dubai to buy handsets and sell in Kano. He told me he would take me down if I could raise N150,000. That was why I did what I did. But with the look of things, it is obvious that I am in a big trouble and may never come out of from it for the rest of my life”, he stated remorsefully.

Information at Crime Guard’s disposal revealed that operatives at the SCID would be leaving Lagos for Umunede in Delta state, to inspect the spot where the suspect claimed to have thrown Aremu’s body, with a view to ascertaining whether he is alive or not.

Police sources however hinted that the driver’s seat of the recovered truck was stained with blood, adding that at the end of investigation, the suspect would be charged to court for murder and stealing.

Education / LASU Crises:congress Suspends ASUU Excos by adrelanine: 6:44am On Dec 15, 2014
FRESH crisis is brewing at the Lagos State University, LASU,
as the general congress of the Academic Staff Union of
Universities, ASUU, of the institution, weekend, suspended its
union’s executive members led by Mr. Adekunle Idris for lack
of focus and poor leadership style.
The decision which was arrived after an extensive deliberation
by the congress subsequently, announced the establishment of
an interim executive led by Asokere Ayodele to take charge of
the union’s affairs until a properly constituted executive for the
union is put in place.
The congress also directed that a five-man investigative panel
be constituted to probe activities of the suspended ASUU-
LASU executives.
Asokere, along with two others, Afobuno Sunday and Rasaq
Adewale Olowu conveyed the congress’ decisions at a media
briefing at the weekend. They said that the union’s emergency
congress held on Thursday, December 11, 2014 had in
attendance about 150 academic staff out of the 450 staff who
are active on campus at the period of the congress.
According to Asokere, the congress was well-attended going
by records of the past attendance, adding that available
records of members’ attendance at previous congresses
showed that the number of attendees was normally between
50 and 100.
The interim chairman said that the notice of the exco’s
suspension was being communicated to the various groups
affected by the decision including the ASUU Lagos, the ASUU
national, the LASU management and the suspended
executives.
“At a well-attended congress meeting of the union, we
reviewed the events unfolding within the union in the last 21
months under the regime of Mr. Adekunle Idris-led exco. After
extensive deliberations, it was decided that since the Idris–led
excos has lost focus and has displayed gross incapability to
hold the union as one, leading to its balkanization, the exco is
hereby suspended.

Crime / Housemaid Abduct Bosses's Two Kids by adrelanine: 6:43am On Dec 09, 2014
housemaid, identified simply as Juliet, has allegedly
abducted the two children of her bosses who live on Gateway
Crescent in the Magodo, Isheri area of Lagos State.
The 24-year-old housemaid was said to have fled home with
the kids –Rafael (3), and 15-month-old Michael– who are
nephews of a Nollywood actress, Kate Henshaw, on Sunday
evening after their parents went out around 6pm.
Our correspondent gathered that the kids’ mother, Mrs.
Onajite Esharegharan, and her husband, Elvis, had decided to
go for a shopping on the fateful day in celebration of the
latter’s birthday.
It was learnt that the couple had instructed Juliet, who hails
from Osun State, to lull the kids to sleep before they left
home.
PUNCH Metro further learnt that Juliet, the children, their
grandmother and her nurse ─ who also lives in the house ─
were in the sitting room watching television, when the
generator went off. It was said that the elderly woman and
the nurse decided to retire to their respective rooms, while
Juliet went upstairs with the children.
It was when the couple came back home that the household
discovered that the housemaid had sneaked out with the
children.
It was gathered that Onajite secured the service of the fleeing
housemaid last Tuesday through a sale portal, OLX , where a
visitor, identified simply as Omolade, advertised .
Omolade had allegedly posted a number on the website for
those who were interested in a “humble” housemaid to apply
─ an advertisement to which Onajite responded. It was learnt
that Omolade eventually took Juliet to Onajite’s office.
Our correspondent visited the couple at the Unity Estate,
Ojodu, where Onajite’s aunt lives.
Onajite said, “After we came back from the church, the
children looked tired and I told Juliet to take Michael to bed
while I went to do my hair. He had not slept when I came
back. That day (Sunday) was my husband’s birthday and we
decided to have a couple’s outing. We told her to take the
children to bed immediately because they were very tired.
“We got back home at 9pm. It was Abigail, the nurse, that
opened the door for us. When we entered, everywhere was
quiet and that was when my husband became suspicious
because usually, our children would have run from upstairs to
say welcome.
“She probably deceived the kids that she was taking them to
their mum. Her telephone line and that of Omolade have been
switched off since yesterday (Sunday). We lodged complaints
at the Isheri Police Station and the Department of State
Service. The police said it was beyond their capacity, but the
DSS promised to track the housemaid down.”
Elvis, a businessman, said, “We just hope nothing is going to
happen to them. We do not have any specific suspicion as to
where she took them to.”
Onajite’s aunt, Mrs. Tina Obajuwana, said she was amazed by
the housemaid’s action despite her calm look.
“When she was introduced to me on Saturday, I thought she
would be a good woman. She looked gentle and hardly could
anyone think she is evil,” she said.
In a post on a news portal, Nairaland, Henshaw urged
members of the public to provide the family with information
that could help in locating the children.
The post read in part, “Please help spread the news. My
nephews (Rafael and Michael) have been missing since
yesterday. These boys have been kidnapped! Lord locate them
and bring them home safe and sound. Their parents left them
at home briefly with the housemaid, grandmother and a nurse.
The maid ran away with the children when the grandmother
and the nurse went to bed. When the parents returned home,
the children and maid were gone.”
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu,
confirmed the incident, adding that efforts were on to rescue
the victims.
He said, “There are efforts to rescue the children and
apprehend the fleeing maid. Members of the public are
encouraged to give information that will lead to the rescue of
the kids and reunite them with their parents.”

Education / 48 Bag First Class From UNILORIN by adrelanine: 5:51am On Oct 14, 2014
The authorities of the University of Ilorin, Kwara State say they are producing 48 First Class graduates and 106 PhD holders in this year’s convocation.

The university’s Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, Mr. Kunle Akogun, stated this in a statement obtained by our correspondent on Monday.

According to him, the first class holders are part of the 5, 421 graduands for the institution’s 30th convocation.

He added that 1,190 would be graduating with Second Class Upper degree, while another 2,814 would be graduating with Second Class Lower degree.

The ceremonies are for between October 20 and 23.

Meanwhile, a member of the just concluded National Conference, Mr. John Dara, has called for the expansion of infrastructure and admission capacity in the nation’s universities.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event where the West African Students’ Union honoured him with the Kwameh Nkrumah award on Monday, Dara also said there was the need to encourage more private sector participation in tertiary institutions’ ownership in the country.

The move, according to him, will help to address the wide gap admission gap in the country.

He said, “We need to keep expanding the existing tertiary institutions and we need to allow more universities, especially through private initiatives. Private initiatives can substantially boost the quality of education. People may see private initiatives to mean profit-driven university system. No! The investors in the most privately owned universities across the world are not expecting profit.

“We have enough wealthy people that can invest in university. There is no reason why we cannot have, for instance, a Dangote University and a Mike Adeniuga University in Ijebu Ode. Let us encourage private universities to build more universities so that we will give our children the opportunity to be their best.”

He urged public universities to explore other funding platforms, such as private-public partnership in order not to depend solely on the government for their funding.

Dara also canvassed the need for the restoration of the glorious yesteryear of Nigerian tertiary institutions.

“In fact, while there are indications that things are improving, we are far from where we ought to be. I long for a time when our universities will be centres of excellence again. Take, for instance, there is no reason why the University of Ibadan cannot regain her position as a global centre of excellence in medical science; why the University of Lagos cannot regain her position as a leading centre for management studies.

“Formerly UNILAG was a trail-blazer in Environmental Science, the same with Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. People like us want to see a situation where when they talk about the global top 50, they will mention two Nigerian universities or more among them. Then we know that we have made tremendous progress
