5The Blind NASCAR driver

On January 29, 2011, Mark Anthony Riccobono took the wheel of a Ford Escape and drove solo around the Daytona International Speedway, something that's not unusual except for one thing: Riccobono is blind.

Two technologies make it possible: DriveGrip, that consists of two gloves that send vibrations over the knuckles to tell the driver how much to turn the wheel, and SpeedStrip, a cushion down the back and legs of the driver which tell them how much to accelerate.

With only 10 percent of normal vision at age 5, Riccobono continued to lose vision throughout his life. But now, as part of a program from the National Federation of the Blind, he's working to demonstrate that blind people can adjust to society and drive safely with the aid of new technology. "It's going to be a lot of work to convince them that we can actually pilot a vehicle that is much more complex and has much more risk. Now we have to convince society that this demonstration is not just a stunt. It's real. It's dynamic research that's doing great things," said Mark.

4.The Blind Architect

Christopher Downey is an architect, planner, and consultant who lost his sight in 2008 after a tumor wrapped around his optic nerve. How was it possible to keep working as an architect? He works with a blind computer scientist who has devised a way to print online maps through a tactile printer. Today, he is dedicated to creating more helpful and enriching environments for the blind and visually impaired, and he also helps in crafting design processes that are more responsive to the needs of blind clients and end-users.

3.The Blind Photographer

Pete Eckert was trained in sculpture and industrial design. He had always been a visual person and planned to study architecture at Yale, but then he started to lose his sight because of a condition called retinitis pigmentosa. Amazingly enough, he embraced photography even more after becoming blind, shooting ethereal double exposures and vivid light paintings with his Mamiyaflex TLR. He visualizes the image he wants to create in his mind and uses his senses of sound, touch, and memory to make a photograph. "I am a visual person. I just can't see," he says. (Source)

2.Blind painter

John Bramblitt lost his vision in 2001 when he was 30 years old due to complications from epilepsy. At first, John says he lost hope and was in a deep depression, but then he found an outlet: painting. Since John can't see colors, he has developed a process whereby he paints by touch. According to the artist, the colors feel different to him: white is thick and black is a little runny, so when he needs gray, he mixes the two until the texture is right. His art has been sold in over twenty countries and he has appeared internationally in print, TV, and radio. His work has received much recognition, including the "Most Inspirational Video of 2008" from YouTube and three Presidential Service Awards for his innovative art workshops.

I got this online!! It caught ma attention, and I really appreciated these people's abilities..so I decided to share. 1.The Blind Surfer
Derek Rabelo isn't your average surfer. Far from it, since Derek was born with congenital glaucoma. However, that didn't stop the 20-year-old Brazilian from learning to surf when he was just three years old.

"With God, everything is possible," he says, and religion does play a big role in his life: his church helped take him to Hawaii last winter, where the surf community took Rabelo under its wing. Relying on four out of five senses, Rabelo is the protagonist of the upcoming documentary "Beyond Sight." If Derek's example doesn't put trivial complaints like high tides or sideshore winds into perspective, not a lot of other stories will....!

Family / List Of Things You Need To Teach Your Child(ren) At Early Age! by adrelanine: 1:18pm On Oct 03, 2014

Here is a list of things you need to teach your Child(ren) at early age: #‎Message‬
1: Warn your Girl Child Never to sit on anyone's laps no matter the situation including uncles.
2: Avoid Getting Dressed in front of your child once he/she is 2 years old. Learn to excuse them or yourself.
3. Never allow any adult refer to your child as 'my wife' or 'my husband'
4. Whenever your child goes out to play with friends make sure you look for a way to find out what kind of play they do, because young people now sexually abuse themselves.
5. Never force your child to visit any adult he or she is not comfortable with and also be observant if your child becomes too fond of a particular adult.
6. Once a very lively child suddenly becomes withdrawn you may need to patiently ask lots of questions from your child.
7. Carefully educate your grown ups about the right values of sex . If you don't, the society will teach them the wrong values.
8: It is always advisable you go through any new Material like cartoons you just bought for them before they start seeing it themselves.
9. Ensure you activate parental controls on your cable networks and advice your friends especially those your child(ren) visit(s) often.
10. Teach your 3 year olds how to wash their private parts properly and warn them never to allow anyone touch those areas and that includes you (remember, charity begins from home and with you).
11: Blacklist some materials/associates you think could threaten the sanity of your child (this includes music, movies and even friends and families).
12. Let your child(ren) understand the value of standing out of the
crowd.
13: Once your child complains about a particular person, don't keep quiet about it. Take up the case and show them you can defend them.
Remember, we are either parents or parents-to-be.
PLEASE TAKE NOTE!!!!!!!

Education / New Born Baby Rescued Alive From Toilet Pipes!!{see Shocking pix} by adrelanine: 6:49am On Sep 30, 2014
Pictures have emerged showing the moment a newborn baby was rescued after she was found stuffed in a pipe leading away from a university bathroom.

The mother, a student at Linyi University in Shandong province in eastern China, is believed to have given birth to the child over a toilet on Sunday.

The baby girl, who police suspect was flushed down the lavatory, was luckily found when students heard crying coming from a 20 centimetre-wide pipe leading away from the bathroom.

Fire services were called and the newborn was eventually located wedged in a section of piping between the third and fourth floor of the university building.

Firefighters rescued the baby using an angle grinder to cut the pipe and push the child up to colleagues on the floor above.

The baby, who survived the ordeal, was then taken to hospital for checks.

Fire Brigade spokesman Tao Fang said: ‘It was impossible to get the baby out from above.

‘We used an angle grinder to break open the pipeline on the third floor and we could then push the child up to colleagues on the fourth floor where she was handed to medics who were waiting to take her to hospital.’
Police have tracked down the mother and are deciding whether or not to press charges.

The incident sparked outcry on Chinese social media, with one person writing on Weibo: ‘I find the image of a young woman giving birth in the loo, cleaning herself up and then going back to her room to carry on studying a particularly worrying one and a sign of the sort of throwaway society that we live in now days.’

9.Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome or Accelerated Aging
This is extremely rare – 1 in 4 million births – and those suffering from Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome age at an extremely rapid pace. It's not known why this occurs and unfortunately there is no cure. Children born with this affliction rarely live longer than 13 years old and often die of a heart attack.

10.“Tree Man” Disease – Epidermodysplasia Verruciformis
A person that is suffering from this health problem isn't turning into a plant. Actually, this very rare condition is caused by a sensitivity to human papillomaviruses (HPVs) that cause an abundance of warts, which look and feel like tree bark.

Dede Kosawa was an Indonesian man who lived with this condition for 20 years and was nicknamed the Tree Man. If he would get them cut off, they would quickly return. In 2008, doctors from the US began treating Dede. He reportedly made a lot of progress but was never able to fully rid himself of the affliction

5.Hyperthymestia – People Who Can Remember Everything
Marilu wins every marital argument

The opposite problem of #4 is called Hypermthymestia, and is an extremely rare condition where people seem to be able to remember every detail about nearly every moment in their life. If you give them a date, they will tell you the day of the week it was, the weather, what they were wearing, and other mundane details as if it were yesterday. There are only 6 known cases of this problem, one of which is celebrity Marilu Henner, star of the 1970s show Taxi.

6.Synesthesia – Incongruous Sensations
It's been described by someone who has it as “sensory interplay.” Synesthesia causes people to see, taste, or even smell things that would normally not have these properties (like music or numbers). This has been an advantage to sommelier Jaime Smith, who sees shapes and colors when he smells something. Another woman, Taria Camerino is a chef who uses her synesthesia to create “flavor profiles” of emotions like satisfaction or discontent. Synesthesia affects 1 in 27 people

7.Methemoglobinemia – The Blue Fugate Family of Kentucky
Martin Fugate wasn't sad, but he was blue when he arrived in Trouble Creek in 1920. This was caused by methemoglobinemia, a condition which restricts the flow of oxygen around the body, causing the azure pallor (but are usually fine otherwise).

Fugate married Elizabeth Smith, who wasn't blue but carried the recessive gene. Four of seven children were blue, and due to the remoteness of their village and societal norms which allowed them to marry cousins, their children ended up having dozens of offspring with the condition. The family's story is written about here in more detail:http://www.indiana.edu/~oso/lessons/Blues/TheBlues.htm

8.Congenital Hypertrichosis – Human Werewolf Syndrome
Congenital Hypertrichosis is the medical term for having an overly hairy body. It's been nicknamed “human werewolf syndrome” even though it has nothing to do with the moon and the people aren't lycanthropes. Its reported to affect only 50 people in the world. The condition has no cure, but is surely traumatic for many; in the 19th and 20th century people with this condition were delegated to being circus sideshow performers. However, one young boy, Pruthviraj Patil, who lives in Mumbai, is reportedly happy, healthy, and popular at school.

1.Priapism – Persistent Erection
This is one boner that's not particularly fun and in fact is downright dangerous. A priapism is defined as an erection that lasts more than 4 hours (and you're not working on a porn movie). There are many things that can cause a priapism, including leukemia, sickle cell anemia, and even the bite from a black widow spider. It can also occur due to an injury. One 22-year-old man from Dublin recently endured a priapism that lasted for SEVEN WEEKS due to a bicycle accident. (Kids, listen to what the Viagra commercial says: if it persists for more than 4 hours, call a doctor, as you could die!)

2.Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD)
Kim Ramsey has 100 orgasms a day (not by choice).

This is another condition that sounds sexy, but also isn't very much fun. Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD) was first diagnosed in 2001 and is a very rare condition that affects primarily women, but men can get it too.

It is not known what causes it, but it has been brought about by injury and is also linked to anxiety and depression. Some women can experience hundreds of orgasms daily, others feel like they're constantly on the edge. All of them experience a great amount of pain and personal embarrassment. In 2012, two women were reported to have killed themselves and there is currently no completely effective treatment.

3.Face Blindness or Prospagnosia
Have you ever looked at someone and thought you recognized them but can't place it?
Probably. But what about looking at someone and not recognized them, even if they were your own mother?

That's what happens to people who suffer from Prospagnoisa, or Face Blindness. This occurs in some form in 1 out of every 50 people and some people do not even realize they have it (until they get slapped in the face). Do you have prosopagnosia? Take this test to see!

4.Anterograde Amnesia – Teenager Can't Remember The Day Before
Because of a lack of oxygen during birth, Ricky Dean from Taunton, England has an unusual condition where he cannot remember things that happened to him the day before.

Much like the movie Memento, he cannot remember who he is, who his friends are, or even that he's supposed to brush his teeth. Fortunately, his loving parents take good care of him (he's 19 now) and he wears an iPhone around his neck, which contains reminders and helps him navigate the world. “He's a compassionate, thoughtful young chap and we're very proud of him,” his mother was quoted as saying. Education / 10 Female Unilorin Medical Students Get Daily Trust Scholarship by adrelanine: 6:05pm On Sep 29, 2014
A new set of 10 female medical students of the University of Ilorin have joined the list of beneficiaries of the scholarship scheme instituted by Media Trust Limited, publishers of the Daily Trust, Weekly Trust, Sunday Trust and Aminiya.

The new beneficiaries were presented with their cheques at a ceremony held at the College of Health Sciences last Wednesday (September 24, 2014).

Under the medical scholarship scheme instituted by the company seven years ago, 10 female students from three benefitting universities in the three geo-political zones of Northern Nigeria are selected annually and awarded scholarship to the tune of N100, 000 until the completion of their medical training.

Other benefitting universities are the University of Maiduguri (North-East Zone), Usman Dan Fodiyo University, Sokoto (North-West Zone). The University of Ilorin is selected from the North-Central Zone.

The Provost, College of Health Sciences, University of Ilorin, Prof. Wahab Johnson, described the initiative of Media Trust as a laudable one, which would go a long way in encouraging the female students and elevating them to be at par with their male counterparts.

Prof. Johnson said, “It was a pleasant information to note that you have aptly selected the so-called weaker sex, they are no longer weak anyway. I think your philosophy of wanting to encourage or elevate the other gender to get to class with the male gender is a laudable one. I want to pray that this association with us will not be something that would fritter away in the shortest possible time. I also want to pray that whatever you are doing in terms of community service, I understand it is not only this state you are extending this to, God in his infinite mercy will replace wherever it is coming from.”

The Provost noted that “it is not easy for a profit-making company to do this kind of thing. Media Trust is not the only media organisation but it is noteworthy that you are probably the only one that has identified this area of community service”.

Prof. Johnson called for more areas of support from the company in terms of building hostels and improving the infrastructures of the college.

Presenting the cheques to the beneficiaries on behalf of Media Trust, the company's Administrative/Legal Officer, Mr. Umar Ibrahim, explained that the gesture was part of the organisation's corporate social responsibility (CSR) aimed at encouraging the students to do more in the society. He said that the medical profession is the life-centre of any society.

The Deans of the Faculties of Basic Medical Sciences and Clinical Science, Prof. A. A. Akande and Prof. O.T Adedoyin, respectively, were on ground to receive the Media Trust team, which included its Senior Advert Executive, Mallam Idris Abubakar and its Kwara State Correspondent, Mr. Abdullateef Aliyu.

Education / China Construct Mobile phone sidewalks For Phone Addicts!! by adrelanine: 11:07pm On Sep 22, 2014
Smartphone addicts who never look up have been relegated to a special sidewalk lane in Chongqing, where China's first mobile phone-only sidewalk was recently installed in a bid to cut down on accidents.
Smartphone-wielding pedestrians are a bane of modern society--these distracted texters have been blamed for everything from inconveniencing others with their slow pace to causing accidents.
To reduce smartphone-caused accidents, Chongqing installed a mobile phone-only sidewalk along a portion of Yangren Street.
Despite the city's good intentions, the mobile phone-only sidewalk has generated criticism and ridicule with some saying that the design only encourages bad habits and will likely cause more accidents.
