When recently Salamuden Mohammed Adisa arrived at the university town of Nsukka in Enugu State, many wrote him off as one of those herbalists around. But under a very short time, the 25-year-old Oyo State-born herbalist, who goes with the cognomen, Baba (old man) has proved himself a different medicine man.
Under the period he came to Nsukka he has treated over 100 patients of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) even as he revealed that most of the carriers were students and teenagers.

Adisa, who is widely traveled in the West African region, said because he has spent many years in Ivory Coast, people now call him Baba Cote De Ivoire, “that is the name I am popular with in many countries in West Africa”.
Adisa who claimed that he can cure fibroid in only two months advised that the sickness is better treated traditionally.

He said it was not something that orthodox medicine has advantage over, insisting that with herbal medicine, a fibroid patient discharges the fibroid through the anus; the mouth (vomiting), urine or the skin pores thorough sweating.
Adisa who is currently in Nsukka on a two-month-long trade fair disclosed that the records he gathered so far in the university town showed that students and teenagers are most vulnerable group to STD infection.
He spoke to Daily Sun on his competence in the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and fibroid. Excerpts:

Inheritance
I can’t remember learning the treatment I do. I grew up and saw myself treating people. I inherited it from my grandfather; my grandfather inherited it from his ancestors. The treatment of STD is hereditary in our family. I was very close to my grandfather when he was alive. I used to enter the thick forest with him in search of herbs, roots and leaves. In the family, even though I have other senior brothers, they call me Baba - father.

Too many students have STD here
Our experience here is that teenagers are the most affected group. From our interviews, most of them are students. In very rare cases, even infants can have the infection. They can contract it from a mother who has the infection. I remember that I treated a very small girl in Ile Ife. Since I arrived at Nsukka, I have treated about 100 patients; 75 per cent of them are very young people. If a female approaches me for treatment I will first find out if she is married. If the person is married, I will insist on her bringing her husband without which, I will not treat her. I advise those who are intending to marry to go for test not only for AIDS, but for other sexually transmitted diseases. Our problem here is that many patients that come to us have no money to pay for their treatment. I do not treat AIDS.

I treat fibroid in two months
Orthodox medical practitioners treat fibroid by operation. This is not necessary. The medicine I use for treating fibroid are in both liquid and powdered form. When the patient takes them, she can pass out the fibroid through the anus, the mouth (vomiting), urinary passage or the pores of the skin (sweating). By the grace of God I can boast that I can treat the disease in two months. I bet anybody who cares. I believe seriously in the efficacy of traditional medicine. They are very natural and have no side effect except when taken in over-dose. I am a member of the National Association of Nigeria Traditional Medicine Practitioners.

Botanic garden
Unrestricted deforestation has made it imperative for every serious traditional medicine practitioner to establish a botanical garden. We inherited the practice of going into the forest to fish out the herb and roots we need from among other plants. Entering into the jungle can be a very hazardous expedition. At times, we meet wild beasts that are hostile. At other times, one can stumble on poisonous snakes. By the grace of God, I have embarked on a botanical garden project where all the plants used in the treatment of STD can be conveniently obtained. It is an expensive and long term venture, government should assist in this regard by funding private botanical gardens and establishing public ones where our members can go and collect materials at subsidized cost. There is no doubt that investment on traditional medicine will save foreign exchange, promote importation of indigenous medicine and create employment opportunities.

It came down in torrents, pouring forth from the heavens with undisguised ferocity. Accompanied by lightning and strong, howling winds, the rain forcefully pounded the streets and clanged furiously on rooftops. It came with low visibility, forcing many a motorist to quickly pull their vehicles over by the roadside. And within minutes, traffic on Lagos roads became paralyzed, with floods taking over both major and minor streets across the state.

Last Friday’s rains, like the ones before, caused major gridlocks in Lagos and some other states across the country. The downpour did even more. Many homes across the state became unwilling hosts to flood created by rainwater, with residents scurrying to rearrange household furniture to save them from the rampaging flood.

The rains, as earlier predicted by experts, are here again. And if the forecast of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) is anything to go by, then the state is in for some unpleasant times.
According to the agency, the degree of rainfall in 2011 falls between 300 and 1100 millimetres in the Northern part of Nigeria while it fluctuates between 1200 and 2700 in the South. What the frightening figures simply connote is that the rains of this year will be quite heavy and ferocious, especially in the South, unlike in the previous years.

In a coastal state like Lagos, the forecast portends that the state will witness more rain-induced crisis this year than it did in previous years. It means that the state will, most likely, experience more flooding this year, with millions of residents suffering displacement and other ills associated with flooding.
The scary NIMET forecast has since been giving the state government sufficient cause for concern. Only last year, flooding in parts of the state resulted in the displacement of thousands of residents. Property, roads and other infrastructure worth billions of naira were also destroyed in the flooding that disrupted commercial activities in the state. Little wonder that the government has raised the alarm that this year’s flooding might surpass last year’s, advising residents of flood-prone parts of the state to start considering relocating.
The government has, however, assured residents that it will strive hard to minimise the likely consequences of the flooding, saying it has started working out modalities to save residents from its effects.

General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the state government is aware of the likely effects of the rains this year and would not be caught napping. In his words, the state government, under the leadership of Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) is working hard on the forecast and taking the battle against flooding more seriously. He said residents would not pass through what they underwent last year during the rainy season.

In the peak of the rainy season last year, the Ogun River overran its banks, spilling its brownish waters into homes and streets across many Lagos communities. Many communities across several local government areas in the state were sacked by the rampaging flood which cut off many communities from other parts of the state, forcing millions of residents to flee their homes. The state government had to relocate many of the displaced people, housing some at the relief camps hastily constructed by the state government.

Osanyintolu put the number of displaced persons housed at the Agbowa Relief Camp at 1,600. Those taken to the camp, he said, were those severely affected during the period the surge of Ogun River devastated several communities in the North-Eastern part of Lagos. Besides those gravely affected, he noted that the state government equally catered to the needs of those mildly affected. And now that the rainy season has come again, Osanyintolu said the government is determined that the rains will not lead to the loss of lives and property as witnessed last year.

Said Osanyintolu: “Flood is the main natural disaster Lagos metropolis is susceptible to. And the state has fine-tuned this early warning system, intensified sensitization campaign against flood disaster and taken multi-pronged approaches to contain its imminent crisis. We are simply looking towards the future with an agenda to ensure safety of lives and properties.”

To further assure residents that the state is leaving no stone unturned in its determination to ensure that residents are saved the agony associated with prolonged flooding, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Drainage Service in the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Muhydeen Akinsanya, an engineer, recently addressed journalists on the issue.
Akinsanya spoke in the presence of his Transportation, Information and Strategy and Environmental Services counterparts, Mr. Seyi Coker, Mrs. Ranti Odutola and Dr. Titilayo Anibaba respectively. The officials said Lagos residents must constantly be proactive in ensuring that the state is not overrun by flood this rainy season.

Akinsanya said every resident must ensure that water channels are constantly rid of solid wastes. He also named 10 communities which he described as disaster zones in the state. They include Ikosi-Ketu, Mile 12, Agiliti, Thomas Laniyan Estate, Owode-Onirin, Agboyi-Ketu, Owode Elede, Maidan and Isheri North scheme. He said the communities are susceptible to flooding between June and September.
“To avoid major disasters, the state government urges residents of the communities to move to higher grounds within the months of June to mid September and October to January because the capacity of most canals is not likely to contain the volume of runoff expected from the rainfall, thereby culminating in the crisis of flooding with immediate and remote consequences,” he said.

He asserted that water channels in the state have been cleared, even as he asserted that government would continue to pursue its regular maintenance schedule. But he appealed to residents to desist from building structures atop drainages.
On the perpetual flooding of some parts of the state, especially from Gbagada to Tin Can Island, including many areas along the stretch of Oworonshoki –Apapa Expressway, Akinsanya regretted that the federal government has for long neglected its responsibilities on that road.

He lamented that people living in places such as Mile 2, Rainbow, Ijeshatedo, Ilasamaja, Ewu-Tuntun and Itire areas would likely face the same difficult situation this year.
The permanent secretary said those living along riverbanks and other flood-prone areas should promptly alert the relevant authorities whenever they notice a high rise in the water level. Those that could be contacted, he said, include Engr. Bade Adebowale on 08056145481, Engr. L.A. Alafia on 08023151082 and Engr. K.O. Ogunsiji on 08023298197.

“People should be very vigilant and raise the alarm in case of high rise in water level, and ensure that they immediately vacate the water path in case of heavy flooding. They should put the safety of lives before anything else. The state government will not relent in the enlightenment of the public on their duties while its efforts will be geared towards proper operation and maintenance of storm water related infrastructure,” he said.

Akinsanya noted that some parts of the state hitherto notorious for flood have since overcome the menace owing to the efforts of the state government.
“In terms of key performance indicators, close to 70 percent of the state wetland has been drained and the degree of flooding reduced drastically as well as a 100 percent reduction in fatalities due to the menace,” he said. He observed that there has been a significant reduction in the number of Lagos residents who experience knee-deep flooding in their communities, saying the figure has reduced from five to two million in the last four years. An effective de-flooding programme put in place by the government, he says, has been responsible for the reduction.

“The government also created the Emergency Flood Abatement Gang (EFAG) to provide emergency services to flood related distress in Lagos State. EFAG undertakes the construction, re-construction or rehabilitation of drains, culverts, manholes including covers, inspection chambers and conduit drains where necessary. All these efforts have produced the desired results,” he noted.
Permanent Secretary in the office of Environment, Dr. Titilayo Anibaba, said the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) is well equipped to clear refuse wherever it is generated in the state. She said the agency would continue to sensitize Lagos residents to dispose of refuse in designated areas so that flooding would be diametrically reduced in Lagos this year.

“We will continue to educate Lagosians to ensure that wastes are properly disposed of at the designated points. This will assist the waste management agency a lot in carting away such refuse. The patronage of illegal cartwheel operators often results in the dumping of refuse in the wrong places,” she noted.
While contributing to the forum, Mr. Seyi Coker said Governor Fashola has pledged that his administration would do all it can to save Lagos residents from the plague of humanitarian crises that usually arise from flooding.
He advised motorists to continually maintain their vehicles and ensure that they remain in good shape all through the year. “There is a need for all year maintenance of the vehicles that ply the roads, especially the brake system, the lights, the wipers and the tyres to prevent fatalities,” he said. Politics / Mass Defection Looms In Ondo Pdp by Afanna1: 4:45am On Jun 08, 2011
BY DAYO JOHNSON
AKURE—THERE are fears of defection in the troubled Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, members in Ondo State to Labour Party, LP, and  Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN.

Vanguard gathered that two chieftains of the party, Col Tunde Awodeyi (Rtd) and the former finance commissioner, Chief Tayo Alasoadura and their supporters are billed to decamp  soon.

The defection may not be unconnected with the lingering crisis and the woeful performance of the PDP in the state in recent times.

Plans have been concluded to receive Awodeyi and his supporters from Ose council areas of the state by Governor Olusegun Mimiko while the leaders of ACN are to receive Chief Alasoadura and his supporters.

Chief Alasoadura is to contest the 2012 governorship election under the ACN.

Also, some failed members of the state House of Assembly are equally billed to defect to the two parties.  Some of them include Thompsom Atikase of the PDP who would be moving to ACN while Kunle Odidi of the ruling LP is moving also to the ACN.

Speaking on the planned defection of the PDP chieftains and their supporters, Prof Olu Agbi blamed it on the leadership style of former governor, Dr. Olusegun Agagu and Dr. Tayo Dairo.

In a statement, the Publicity secretary, Prince Mike Omogbehin, said the loss of five elections in a row was enough to discourage the members and supporters of the party.

“As you are already aware that the leaders and stakeholders of our party held a meeting where decisions were taken and these decisions include the suspension of Dr Agagu and Dairo with the dissolution of the State Executive.” Committee, SEC, and replacing it with the interim of management committee”.

In other places both Dairo and Agagu would have stepped aside in the interest of the party6 but both of them were both positioning themselves for higher offices. Also, under the Dairo led SEC the State Secretary, Barrister Sola Oludipe and the Women leader, Lady Folake Akinjoko resigned to contest elections and to the bewilderment of all members of PDP in the , they simply walked back to the Executive to assume their positions as if we were in a banana republic.

The police in Ughelli, Delta State, have arrested Pastor Emmanuel of African Church, Evwreni Branch and a foreigner for abducting a three-year-old child. The pastor whose name was given as Emmanuel Abuvo and his Cameroonian cohort conspired and abducted the child from her school premises pretending to be her parents.

The three-year-old baby girl was allegedly abducted from her school, Marvel International Schools, Ughelli, last Wednesday and kept in captivity for four days
The police from the area immediately swung into action with the local vigilance group following a tip-off that a pastor of the African Church and his Cameroonian cohort abducted the three-old-baby and were hiding her in an uncompleted building at Evwreni village in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state

According to a source, they noticed unusual noise and movements within an uncompleted building at Evwreni near the church that was being pastored by Pastor Emmanuel Abuvo, one of the kidnap suspects, so they immediately contacted the police at Ughelli and the vigilance group since they were more familiar with the terrain.
Continuing, he said luck ran out on the unsuspecting pastor who was arrested within the premises of the uncompleted building by the police who laid ambush while he made frantic effort to escape.

The source, who pleaded anonymity further stated that immediately the pastor was arrested he started making useful confession that led to the arrest of his cohort. He said through the information given by the pastor to the police, the police were able to accost his alleged accomplice, a Cameroonian, Mr. Stephen Williams, who was at the time waiting for the N4 million ransom they had earlier agreed on with the parent of the abducted child, Mr. Ugbara.

The foreign kidnap suspect, Williams, who spoke with Daily Sun admitted committing the crime.
He said, “my name is Stephen Williams. I am 20 years of age and I am from Duala, Cameroon. I have been working in Nigeria for four years as a watch day with the Riverland Hotels, Ughelli. I have nothing to hide anymore. I kidnapped the baby on the instruction of my friend, Pastor Emmanuel Abuvo who promised to give me plenty of money and it was him, the pastor, who came to carry myself and the baby on his motorcycle to Evwreni near his church. We demanded N4 million as ransom before the release of the baby. Of a truth, this is my first time of committing crime and I was lured into it by the pastor. I have been beaten half dead and if I am let go, I shall never ever involve myself in any crime again, big or small.”

A police source who spoke on grounds of anonymity at the A Division, Ughelli, confirmed the incident and said the parents of the baby girl, Mr. and Mrs. Ugbara had earlier on Tuesday, June 1, reported the kidnapping/missing of their child at Marvel International School, Ughelli.Confirming the arrest of the kidnappers, the police added that they would be charged to court as soon as investigation into the matter was completed.

Woman, three kids escape from kidnappers
On May 27, 2011 · In Crime Alert ,  Story by  Evelyn Usman

It was drama weekend, at Ogombo Ajah area of Lagos, when three men suddenly ran out of a Hyundai Tucson jeep and scampered in different directions, without anyone pursuing them. Few minutes after that, the reason for their action was discovered. They were kidnappers who had abducted a woman and her four children around Ajah. They were reportedly taking their victims to an unknown hideout when they stumbled on policemen at a check point along Epe.

Apparently thinking the policemen had gotten wind of their misdemeanor, they fled, leaving their victims inside the operational Jeep with registration number r DE 751 LSD .

Having waited for sometime without seeing any of the abductors, the abducted woman identified as Mrs Falodun, out of fear, reportedly lowered the tinted glass before opening the car from outside. Confused about the whereabout of her abductors, she reportedly jumped out of the car with her children of ages 12, 9 and 6 and made for the check point where she narrated her ordeal to the policemen.

When the vehicle was searched, the policemen and victims were startled at the recovery of nine magazines loaded with two 240 rounds of 7.62mm caliber ammunition, sixteen rounds of .9mm caliber ammunition, including chains with padlocks

However , investigation, according to the Lagos State Police Command, had begun to ascertain the true owner of the jeep. So far, Crime Alert gathered that no one had come to claim its ownership at the State Criminal Investigation Department where detectives were said to have been on the trail of the kidnappers.
Politics / Two Nigerians Nabbed For Fraud In Ghana by Afanna1: 8:13pm On Jun 04, 2011

The duo are alleged to have swindled victims by claiming to be the US Ambassador to Ghana

Two Nigerians, John Ugboma, 45, and Peter Efiemaya, 39,have been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

They are accused of impersonating the US Ambassador to Ghana on the Internet and attempting to defraud US citizens and other nationals of amounts ranging between $1,500 and $15,000.

The suspects, both residents of Nungua in Accra, were alleged to have sent emails to the victims claiming that $4.5 million had been lodged in their names and that the money was being kept in a security vault in Ghana.

They were arrested when one of the emails they sent to their victims mistakenly went in the mail address of the US Ambassador himself, who quickly alerted the police.

According to Prosper Agblor, the Director General of the CID, following that false representation, the suspects told the victims that they could use their position to influence the Ghanaian authorities to release the money to them and demanded they needed amounts ranging between $1,500 and $15,000 to facilitate the release of the funds.

He said that after thorough investigations by the police, they were arrested when they attempted to defraud another victim at a popular spot in Accra.

A third accomplice, whose name was given only as Obanla, managed to escape and an intensive search had been mounted for his arrest, Agblor added.
