Nairaland / General / Commercial Drivers And Ncdc Protocol by Africanman123(m): 10:45am On Jul 25, 2020
[img][/img][img][/img][img][/img][img][/img][img][/img]
The Nigerian Union Of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) was registered as a trade union in 1978, members includes drivers, taxi cabs, buses, tricycles, bikes, trailers and lorries, unknown to many, NURTW creates about 1.8million employment nationwide and several thousands of indirect employment, these includes vehicle mechanics, spare part dealers etc which all heavily dependent on NURTW members patronage. It should be noted that government generates money from NURTW through issuance of hackney permit, drivers licence, vehicle plate number etc
With covid 19 pandemic ravaging our planet and the urgent steps taken by Nigeria Centre For Disease Control (NCDC) by putting out to the public safety protocols that we must all adhere to, if we must limit the spread of coronavirus, christened Covid 19, when Federal and state government decided the ease the lockdown, the major palpable fear in some quarters is how the popular Lagos bus drivers and conductors will comply with Presidential Task Force (PTF) and NCDC safety protocols; after the lockdown, the guidelines from Lagos state government for commercial and private vehicles includes – All commuters must wear a nose cover, washing of hands with soap under running water, use of alcohol based sanitizers before and after each trip, commercial vehicles should not exceed 60% of their capacity, physical distances to be obeyed at parks and in the buses, no standing by commuters in buses and switching off of Air-Conditioning system.

Surprisingly and effectively the NURTW rose to the demand of the times and rallied her members to conform to the new normal, on embarking on any trip in any of the parks or bus stations, commercial drivers ensures that nobody enters the bus without a nose cover and they ensured that social distance is observed in the vehicle by taking only 60% of bus capacity; arguably majority of the commercials drivers complied to avert arrest from security personnel not necessarily because they are deliberately protecting themselves or commuters from possible infection, whatever the intention, NURTW ensured that members complied to limit the further spread of coronavirus in the state.
Some very organised members of NURTW like operators of Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) and Lagos bus services limited, effectively complied to the NCDC protocols without struggle, this was effective because The Lagos state government did take some relevant steps as way of managing movement of people in the state with emphases on days selected markets can open for operations, the guidelines for market and shopping malls initiated by Lagos state government as part of efforts to curb the spread of coronavirus pandemic. The breakdown emphasises that food and farm produce sellers would be allowed to open from 9.00am to 3.00pm Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays of every week, this strategy is welcomed as an effective crowd control mechanism which makes it easier for NURTW members to commute people from and to different location easier, however, when the government totally ease the lockdown the story surely will be different.

One cannot deny that at dawn in some Lagos routes, these commercial drivers sets new rules for themselves by exceeding instructed vehicle capacity and flouting social distance protocol, these drivers do this under different cover ensuring that their union do not apprehend them and with tactic connivance of some security personnel they enjoy easy ride at night. It will be unfair to put the blame solely on the laps of few misguided NURTW members and their allies in the police force, rather we should blame majority of Lagosians who know and see the dangers of covid 19 yet willfully commute in overcrowded vehicles knowing the inherent dangers in doing so .

The duo of Mr Frederic Oladeinde, commissioner of Transport, Lagos and Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya Ayinde (MC Oluomo), the president of Lagos chapter of NURTW must be commended for collectively exerting required energy and sanitization of members of NURTW, knowing that the more the commercial drivers and commuters obey the NCDC protocol, the more the fight against the spread of corona virus is achieved, while we commend them so far, it also imperative to draw their attention to these few persons who if not called to order will jeopardise the good efforts NURTW is putting into the fight against coronavirus.

Politics / Fayose Clandestinely Destroying The PDP, Adewale Insists by Africanman123(m): 10:36pm On Apr 06, 2017
Chairman, Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Otunba Segun Adewale has reassured the party leaders and members of his commitment and loyalty to the party not minding his distractors including the Ekiti state governor, Ayodele Fayose.
In a press release made available to our correspondent, Adewale denied any relationship with the All Progressive Congress (APC) as a political party or any of its leaders including former Ekiti state Governor Kayode Fayemi.
“My attention has been brought to a spurious claim in a fainted publication (Wazobia Reporters), purporting that I, Otunba Segun Adewale (Aeroland) is plotting to unseat the governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, in order to install former governor, Kayode Fayemi, by 'bribing' Supreme Court judges with a N150 million. Ordinarily, I would not have dignified such porous reasoning feigned as publication with a response, as the entire public can verify or vouch that I will never partake in questionable conducts, more else, engage in what is not only against the Nigeria constitution but foully against humanity.
May I again dismiss abundantly the claims in the said publication, which are not only entirely false, but show the writers lack sense to even think as human beings. It shows clearly the editor needs proper tutelage on the profession.
Contrary to the fictitious publication, which was carved in a vendetta scheme against me for rightly exposing Governor Fayose on his romance with All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership, I must emphasize that I do not know Kayode Fayemi nor have I met him.
More so, it betrays any sensible logic that I will pay my way into the APC to contest a senatorial seat as false claimed in the fainted publication, considering the hardship brought on Nigerians by the party.”
According to him, he has been a party faithful since 2007. "I joined the PDP since 2007 and I have remained faithful to our party's ideologies. In 2011, I contested the Federal House of Representative seat, despite winning grassroots support, the result was manipulated but I remain a committed party man.
"Again in 2015, I contested Lagos West Senatorial seat, won in 7 out of the 10 LGAs for the PDP. Again those that are bent on subverting the will of the people manipulated the whole process yet I remained resolute. In all these, I had the option of bowing to those that made Fayemi but I refused without any apology.
"I am an unrepentant believer in the ideology of the PDP especially under the current leadership of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as the National Chairman. I refused to leave the party when it was very easy to do so as an unrecognized member. It is therefore laughable, incredible and ridiculous when I read Governor Fayose's sponsored news report insinuating that I am involved with the APC undemocratic plot to remove him from office. Governor Fayose should rather face real governance in Ekiti and stop playing childish politics".
In addition, Adewale accused Governor Fayose of being afraid of his own shadow and living on the assumption that others are as unfaithful to the Party as himself. He said the Governor is desperately seeking to evade explaining his unholy relationship with the leadership of the APC in the southwest. "Is it not worrisome that a Governor and leader in our party speak from both sides of the mouth on issues that relate to the ruling party? At one point, the Governor Fayose is busy abusing the President Muhammadu Buhari, alleging former Governor Fayemi of corruption but at the same time praising Asiwaju Bola Tinubu who was instrumental to the election of both men into office at every opportunity."
Adewale insisted that the PDP in the southwest must be returned to the people where it truly belongs just as the National Chairman; Senator Ali Modu Sherrif has saved the party from its enemies at the national level. “It is an aberration for a sitting PDP governor of a state, Ayodele Fayose, to be acting a mole in a party that got him into office, a glaring case of biting the fingers that fed him".
"His open romances with leaders of the ruling party like Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun, visiting Governor Akeredolu of Ondo and praising Asiwaju Bola Tinubu are major discouragements that dampen the morale of our members. A supposed leader of our party in the southwest but sells out on values and proposition of our party for his selfish personal interests. Whoever dares stand against his attempt to destroy the party is immediately under the attack of his propaganda machinery to the detriment of the party”.
The Ekiti state born successful business man and a known philanthropist said it is within his right to aspire to any political position including the highest position in Ekiti state on the platform of the PDP. "I will answer the call of my people when the time is ripe notwithstanding the ongoing efforts by my detractors. Governor Fayose and his lost sheep cannot stop the will of God and good people of Ekiti state."

Health / Medical Facts 101: Drinking Too Much Water Rapidly Can Kill You! by Africanman123(m): 11:12am On Jan 05, 2017
Source: www.doctorshub.com.ng

Death is lurking around every corner. Like, seriously. And while most of us may proudly feel a sense of accomplishment because we have mastered how to survive and not get eaten alive or dead by Sharks, get bitten to death by very large evil reptilian creatures, or get viciously struck to death by wicked bolts of lightening, we still stand a high chance of getting nixed by seemingly trivial things we do daily and take for granted.

Consider water intoxication for example. Who would ever think that ordinary water, with all its numerous healing and life-giving properties, has the capacity for assuming a poisonously lethal dimension? Yet, it is the truth that water can become very toxic to the body when excessively and hurriedly ingested. It can kill you dead!

So for those of us reading this piece who are obsessed with updating things, you may want to quickly update the famous "1001 ways to die" to include water intoxication to the macabre list....assuming the list does not already include water intoxication.
Now you are wondering, right? Asking, how is water intoxication even possible? Even when excessively and hurriedly ingested, how does death from it happen? How does water, the universal solvent of universal appeal, becomes a killing agent?
Just relax....let me explain.
What is water intoxication and how does death result from it?

According to wikipedia, water intoxication , also known as water poisoning or hyperhydration, is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain functions that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside safe limits by overhydration.
Confused, right?

Precisely what I expected. But just before you lose hope, let me demystify all the medical jargons in wiki's definition to bits that are easy to grasp and understand.

What wikipedia is saying in essence is this: when you drink too much water over a short period of time, it affects your brain and can kill you because the level of salts in your body becomes abnormal.
How exactly does this happen?

As it is widely known, the body is predominantly made up of water--- 60%. And this volume is the normal and tightly regulated by the thirst centres in our brains: when there is a drop in the water volume, we feel thirsty and want to drink water to up the volume back to the normal. And when we have been drinking too much, the thirst centre in our brains goes off so that we lose the urge to drink more water. That's how it works. Isn't God fabulous?

Now, you must understand that there are salts e.g Sodium, Potassium, etc ( also known as electrolytes) present in our bodies. These salts are important for our survival...a single drop or rise in their normal values can kill us in minutes. For the purpose of this piece, Sodium is the salt of importance here. Its normal body range is 135-145mmol/l. However, when too much water is in the body, the normal value drops, a condition known as hyponatraemia. And yes, even though there are other causes, drinking too much water over a short period of time causes it too. Its like you have only a teaspoon of sugar poured into a drum of water. You stir the drum of water encouragingly, expectant that by the time you take the spoon to the tip of your tongue you would taste sweetness. Let's be reasonable here guys... would you be able to taste sweetness from that drum? Good. Same thing happens in water intoxication. The sodium becomes insignificant...its effect completely neutralized. Very small salt lost in a sea of water. When this happens to you, just know that your enemies in the village are winning the war to kill you.

Naturally, the kidneys regulate body water by excreting excess via urination. That's why you piss a lot when you drink too much. But even the kidneys are not superkidneys. They do have a limit. And once the water becomes too much for them to handle, they become overwhelmed and they shut down!
That is not a nice thing to happen to anyone, not even your enemies in the village.
So let's bring the pieces together and see what becomes of the puzzle: you drink too much water over a short time + your body salt becomes low + your kidneys are overwhelmed + what? Cerebral oedema: Your brain becomes soft, buggy and mush because lots of water from the excess goes to the brain. You get a watery brain from drinking too much water over a short time, you know....quote me anywhere.

In case you are wondering why anyone, for goodness' sake, would drink so much water to the point of death, you are not a lone. I also wondered about it. But you see, so many people, in the name of appearing cool and making waves on social media do incredible things. Poverty also plays a role....just imagine I drop $5000 in front of you and dare you to gulp down, right away, a 25L gallon of water. Your eyes would light up, wouldn't they? Especially in this Buhari regime. Thats what poverty does to your mind....it makes you desperate and blinds you to fatal risks. You only see the dollars, not the risk. Many of the deaths attributed to water intoxication have often been the result of people pulling these incredible stunts.

Also, water intoxication is a very common occurrence among athletes. In trying to stay hydrated, some of them become intoxicated by drinking just too much in a short while.

As a final note, you may want to be careful and moderate the volume of water you drink. Usually, tragedy ensues when you drink it over a short period of time. So instead of finishing one gallon at a go, phase it out: finish it in, say 4hrs or 10hrs. Make it easy for your kidneys to excrete the excess. And you shouldn't, because of this article, decide to start drinking too little water neither: because you will meet an equally tragic and perhaps more painful end.
Drink the right amount at the right time. Follow your body's instructions and drink in proportion to your body's needs.

Until another time,
