Health / Got Symptomsof Altered Consciousness Or Brain Disorder? You May Need An EEG Test by Afriglobalmedia: 4:12pm On Aug 29, 2017
Need an EEG Test? Don't Worry, We've got you covered.

An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a test used to evaluate the electrical activity in the brain. Brain cells communicate with each other through electrical impulses. An EEG can be used to help detect potential problems associated with this activity.

Why you may need an EEG
The EEG is used to evaluate various types of brain disorders, that may affect the brain activity such as:
1. Altered consciousness-such as stuporous, semi-comatose or comatose states.
2. Seizure disorders - especially atypical seizure variants in patients experiencing bizarre, distressing symptoms.
3. Brain Tumours, suspected
4. Head Trauma - injury where slowing or suppression of voltage production is due to a contusion or a subdural hematoma.
5. Headaches- such as with migraine syndrome
6. Brain Abscess - differential diagnosis of diffuse versus focal inflammatory disease.
7. Metabolic encephalopathy - where characteristic triphasic slow waves may be present.
8. Behavioural Disorders/Psychiatric evaluations.
9. Adolescent disorders - such as ADD, ADHD, depression or anxiety issues.
10. Intermittent Explosive Disorder - The disorder typically starts at age 14 and is often followed by other mental health problems
11. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - type of anxiety disorder
12. Anxiety & Panic Disorder
13. Bi-Polar Disorder
14. Restless Legs Syndrome
15. Shaken Baby Syndrome - is a form of child abuse which refers to brain injury that happens to the child.
The electrical impulses in an EEG recording look like wavy lines with peaks and valleys. These lines allow our doctors to quickly assess whether there are abnormal patterns. Any irregularities may be a sign of brain disorders.

Preparing for an EEG test at Afriglobal Medicare? here are the things you should know

1. Call us to know if we will ask you to stop taking any medications before the test.
2. Wash your hair the night before the EEG, and don’t put any products (such as sprays or gels) in your hair on the day of the test.
3. Avoid consuming any food or drinks containing caffeine for at least eight hours prior to the test.
4. We may ask you to sleep as little as possible the night before the test if you’re required to sleep during the EEG.

Health / What Is Lipid Profile Test And Why Is It Recommended? by Afriglobalmedia: 11:36am On Aug 09, 2017
Lipids are a group of fats and fat-like substances that are essential constituents of cells and sources of energy. Monitoring and maintaining healthy levels of these lipids is important in maintaining a healthy lifestyl.

The results of this test can identify certain genetic diseases and can determine approximate risks for cardiovascular disease, certain forms of pancreatitis, and other diseases. They are also often considered along with other known risk factors of heart disease to develop a plan of treatment and follow-up.

Depending on the results and other risk factors, treatment options may involve lifestyle changes such as diet and exercise or lipid-lowering medications such as statins.

Lipid panels are commonly ordered as part of a physical exam, along with other panels such as the complete blood count (CBC) and basic metabolic panel (BMP).

Lipid profile tests are of 7 types:
The different kinds of cholesterol and other fats in your blood are together called lipids.

Doctors measure and diagnose lipid problems with a blood test which you have to fast for some hours before it to make sure it's not affected by any food you recently ate.

A lipid profile usually gives results for seven different types
1. Total lipids
2. Serum total cholesterol: This test measures all of the cholesterol in all the lipoprotein particles
3. Serum HDL cholesterol: This measures the cholesterol in HDL particles; often called "good cholesterol" because it removes excess cholesterol and carries it to the liver for removal.
4. Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C): this calculates the cholesterol in LDL particles often called "bad cholesterol" because it deposits excess cholesterol in walls of blood vessels
5. Serum triglycerides: This measures all the triglycerides in all the lipoprotein particles, most is in the very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL).
6. Serum Phospholipids
7. Electrophoretic fractionation to determination percentage of
(a) Chylomicrons (b) LDL-low density lipoprotein (c) VLDL- very low density (d) HDL-high density

Your doctor may recommend you to Afriglobal Medicare for a lipid profile test during his health examination if:

1. You are Overweight or obese
2. You have been eating unhealthy diet
3. You have been physically inactive, that is not getting enough exercise
4. You are a male 45 years or older or a female 50-55 years or older
5. If you have Hypertension (blood pressure of 140/90 or higher or taking high blood pressure medications)
6. If you have family history of premature heart disease

If you have any questions about your cholesterol level, please ask us here or click here to chat with us: http:///2vm2NbW

Romance / Know Your Partners’ Health Status Before Marriage by Afriglobalmedia: 1:33pm On Jun 26, 2017
The knowledge of your intending partner’s health status is a major determinant whether that marriage should work out or not. It provides an avenue to make informed consent and enables you and your spouse to seek proper medical care early to prevent unnecessary stress and burden during marriage

1. Test for HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs): With the current prevalence of HIV and other STDs, it is important that spouses should request for their partners to be screened for these diseases before marriage

2. Test for blood group: Knowledge of your spouse’s blood group is important before marriage because of blood group incompatibility that may affect the fetus

3. Test for sickle cell gene: Sickle cell disease is a chronic and debilitating medical condition caused by a defect in red blood cells. It is advisable for sickle cell patients (SS) not to marry a carrier of the sickle cell gene (AS) because of the 50% chance of having a baby with the disease in each pregnancy.

4. Fertility Test: This May sound out of place or weird, but truth be told, a fertility test is another test that all intending couples should do before saying ‘I DO’. This is important because fertility issues can be addressed as early as possible without the unnecessary biological, psychological, social and emotional trauma associated with barrenness.

Testing for possible genetic /chronic medical conditions:

Marriage is a lifelong commitment with both partners looking after each another. Knowledge of possible genetic or chronic conditions of your partner wouldn’t be harmful, but it will go a long way in assisting both couples on how to best prepare for the challenges ahead

Family / Know Your Genotype. Don't Live In Ignorance. The Consequences May Be Fatal by Afriglobalmedia: 1:13pm On Jun 19, 2017
Be sincere. Since you have been in a relationship with your partner, have you found out his/her genotype?

Sickle cell anemia (SCD) is an inherited disorder of the hemoglobin in the blood.

Sickle cell anemia requires the inheritance of two sickle cell genes.

Sickle cell trait, which is the inheritance of one sickle gene, almost never causes problems.

The current treatment of sickle cell anemia is directed primarily toward managing the individual features of the illness as they occur.

How is sickle cell anemia inherited?

Sickle cell anemia is inherited as an autosomal (meaning that the gene is not linked to a sex chromosome) recessive condition. This means that the gene can be passed on from a parent carrying it to male and female children

To avoid sickle cell babies, know your genotype before you say yes to that handsome guy or that beautiful lady who you wish to spend the rest of your life with

Genotype and its appropriate suitor:
AA + AA = excellent
AA + AS = Good
AA + SS = Fair
AS + AS = BAD
AS + SS = Very bad
SS + SS = Extremely Bad.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) and thalassemia are inherited blood disorders. If you are a carrier of sickle cell or thalassemia, you can pass these conditions on to your baby.

When both parents are carriers

When both parents are carriers, each time they are expecting a child there is:

A one in four (25%) chance of the child not being affected – the baby will not have or carry the disease

A one in four (25%) chance of inheriting both unusual haemoglobin genes and having the disease

A two in four (50%) chance of inheriting one unusual haemoglobin gene and being a carrier.

So, We ask again. Be Sincere, since you have been in a relationship with your partner, have you found out his/her genotype?

Health / Excess Blood In Your Body? Don’t Keep It. See Health Benefits Of Donating by Afriglobalmedia: 11:06am On Jun 14, 2017
When was the last time you stopped to appreciate all the good stuff your blood does for you? Without it, oxygen would never reach your cells and carbon dioxide would be filling your blood vessels as we speak. The way you need blood to survive, the same way others need it too.

We don't just need to give blood in the event of tragedies or emergencies. Instead, it should be a normal and routine part of our lives. Regular blood donations mean that there will be sufficient amounts of safe blood in stock.

Health Benefits of donating blood

We often hear about the importance of donating blood as it relates to the recipients. Donating blood is not only good for the health of recipients but also good for the health of donors.

It is important that blood donation takes place in a hospital or a clinic or a blood bank, in the presence of medical experts

1. Health Check-up: You can donate blood only if you are fit enough to do so. Before every blood donation process, a series of health check-ups are performed on the donor, this will help you know your blood pressure abnormalities and diagnose some of the indolent diseases at the early stage before they get flared up and present with multiple medical problems

2. Reduce your risk of suffering a heart attack: Donating blood at least once a year could reduce the risk of a heart attack by 88 percent. It helps to keep the levels of iron in the body in check, especially in males which have shown to reduce heart problems.

3. Reduce your risk of developing cancer: Excess iron has also been associated with an increased risk of cancer. Patients who regularly donated blood had a lower risk of developing cancer than those who did not.

4. Burns Calories: One-time blood donation helps you shed about 650 Kcal. This can aid in your body weight control measures. However, depending on your health status and your blood hemoglobin, blood can be donated safely once in two or three months and not more frequently.

Family / Now That I Am Pregnant, What Are The Basic Prenatal Test I Should Take? by Afriglobalmedia: 12:26pm On Jun 13, 2017
There are a number of prenatal tests you will go through while you're pregnant, but the very first test you will take is the one that will tell you whether you're actually pregnant in the first place. To get off to a healthy start, it is important to know that you are going to have a baby as early into the pregnancy as possible.

Important Basic Test for Pregnant Women

1. Blood tests: This is to determine your blood type, Iron level to see if you're anemic, and Blood glucose level to check for diabetes

2. Rh factor: This is to check if your blood is Rh negative, and the father's is Rh positive, the fetus may inherit the father's Rh-positive blood, which could cause your body to make antibodies that would hurt your unborn child).

3. HIV, hepatitis B, and syphilis: These tests are important in order to avoid birth defects after delivery as well as whether you are immune to rubella since there is a tendency of coming down with this illness while pregnant, especially in the first three months of pregnancy

4. Diabetes: Between weeks 24-28, you will be screened again for diabetes because some women develop pregnancy-related diabetes, known as gestational diabetes.

3. A Pap smear: this will be done to test for early cervical cancer and sexually transmitted diseases such as chlamydia and gonorrhea

4. A blood pressure check: You will be screened you for high blood pressure, which can interfere with the blood supply to the placenta.

5. Ultrasound screening: This will help determine your due date more accurately, and also look for abnormalities in the fetus.

6. CVS: which is usually done between weeks 10-12 of the pregnancy, can be performed either by passing a thin tube from the vagina into the cervix to remove a sample of tissue from the chorionic villi which make up the placenta

7. At the end of the pregnancy, between weeks 32-36, you may be retested for syphilis and gonorrhea, as well as for group B strep (GBS), a type of bacterium that can cause meningitis or blood infections in newborn.

What Causes an Adult Brain Tumor?
Doctors do not know what causes primary brain tumors. However, several risk factors have been identified.

1. Some genetic diseases put you at risk for brain tumors. These include Turcot syndrome a condition characterized by abnormal cells and polyps causing genetic disorder
2. Radiation treatments for brain cancer can increase your risk of developing tumors.

How is an Adult Brain Tumor Diagnosed?
Afriglobal Medicare doctors use a number of tests to diagnose brain tumors.
1. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is used to scan your brain and nerve tissues. For this test, you lie down on a table that slides into a scanner.

2. Cranial Computed tomography (CT)
is a modern imaging tool that combines X-rays with computer technology to produce a more detailed, cross-sectional image of your brain. A CT scan of your head/brain lets your doctor see the size, shape, and position of structures that are deep inside your brain/head.

3. An electroencephalogram (EEG) examines your brain’s electrical impulses. We place flat metal disks on your scalp to see your brain’s electrical activity.

If you have or notice any symptoms of brain tumor, visit Afriglobal Medicare for diagnosis at No 8 Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ikeja, Lagos. Or call 016291000

It is very dangerous to health and very sweet to the mouth
GoldCircle:
@OP, Do you mean fizzy drinks? If so, then call 'em 'soft drinks'. That's what my people south of the Sahara call it.

As for me, I stopped all fizzy drinks back in 2009. I advise y'all to stop too. Making the right lifestyle choices today can save you alot of stress once old age comes.

Even HIV is one of them.
Grapay:
very very very necessary. a lot of signs and symptoms of a lot of health conditions do not appear at early stages. What can help you to detect them early enough is an annual health care screenings.

Yes, i go with your point. some signs could be very misleading, not until you visit a medical diagnostic center for screening. that is why I advice people to visit Afriglobal Medicare
karlz:
assuming you are healthy because you dont feel any signs could be misleading, hypertension, diabetes and "stroke" usualy dont give signs till its "late", so freq check up, though not necessarily yearly is good
Health / Is An Annual Health Checkup Necessary Even When You Are Healthy? by Afriglobalmedia: 10:45am On Jun 05, 2017
I am healthy, feeling good and strong. For so many years, I have not visited a diagnostic center to check my health status. although, some of my friends told me that some health conditions will not have symptoms until they have already caused permanent damage.

This drew me to this questions; Is an annual health checkup necessary even when you are healthy?

I need answers and reasons.

Drinking soda has far more serious issues than you may realize.

Studies have shown the negative health effects of drinking soda on your waistline and your teeth. Drinking soda, however, has far more serious health risks than many of us may realize.

1. Caffeine: Most sodas contain caffeine, which has been linked to certain breast lumps, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, and cancers

2. Obesity: Diet soda is calorie-free, but it won't necessarily help you lose weight. It was discovered that people who drank soda were more likely to be obese than those who didn’t, and for each serving of soda consumed daily, the risk of obesity increased 1.6 times

3. Lack of Nutrients: There is absolutely no nutritional value in soda whatsoever. Not only are there many harmful effects of soda, but there are not even any positive benefits to outweigh them. Soda is an unnatural substance that harms the body.

6. Soda increases the risk of diabetes: Drinking one or two sugary drinks per day increases your risk for type 2 diabetes by 25%.

7. Soda dehydrates: Caffeine is a diuretic. Diuretics promote the production of urine, causing you to urinate more frequently. When the body’s cells are dehydrated they have difficulty absorbing nutrients, and it also makes it more difficult for the body to eliminate waste.

8. Soda contains artificial sweeteners: While many people opt for artificial sugar to lower caloric intake the tradeoff for your health isn’t so sweet. Artificial sugars are linked to numerous illness and diseases including cancer.

9. Bad for the teeth: Drinking soda regularly can cause plaque to build up on the teeth and can lead to cavities and gum disease

Diet soda is calorie-free, but it won't necessarily help you lose weight.

Note: Some companies have phased out sodium benzoate, however, both sodium and potassium benzoate were classified by the Food Commission in the UK as mild irritants to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes.

Once you're able to break your regular soda habit and the drink loses its grip on you, it can be treated just like any other junk food: If you really love the taste, there's nothing wrong with an occasional indulgence.

If you understand that soda is essentially just sugar and artificial flavorings, then you can be smarter about when or if you're going to drink it.

Visit Afriglobal Medicare to book for a health check plan to test for High blood pressure, cancer, cavities and gum diseases, fasting blood sugar and other blood sugar tests which may have occurred a result of overly consuming Soda drinks.

Health / Give Up The Stick, Quit Tobacco Before It Kills You by Afriglobalmedia: 11:46am On May 31, 2017
As the saying goes "Smokers are liable to die young"
Cigarettes, cigars, pipes, and spit and other types of smokeless tobacco all cause cancer. There is no safe way to use tobacco.

Smoking shortens male smokers’ lives by about 12 years and female smokers’ lives by about 11 years.
Smoking not only causes cancer. It can damage nearly every organ in the body, including the lungs, heart, blood vessels, reproductive organs, mouth, skin, eyes, and bones.

Major health defects as a result of using Tobacco
Causes fatal diseases such as pneumonia, emphysema and lung cancer
Increased risk of gum disease and tooth loss.
Decreased immune system function
Increased risk of type 2 diabetes
Decreased sense of smell and taste
Premature aging of the skin
Bad breath and stained teeth
Increased risk for cataracts
Higher risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis
Increased risk of peptic ulcers

Available Health check plan
If you notice any health problems as a result of smoking or as a result of being overly exposed to smoke, see our doctors at Afriglobal Medicare for

1. Chest X-ray: This will help us know how much your lungs damage has already be done

2. CT Scan: This will provide better diagnostic images, allowing our doctors to detect problems, such as lung cancer, in earlier stages than with plain X-rays

3. Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) this will help measure the speed of your heartbeat and helps us determine if, and where, heart damage has occurred.

Facts about Smoking

1. Smoking during pregnancy has also been linked to a higher risk of birth defects and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)

2. Smoking can also affect sperm (which reduces fertility) and increase the risk of miscarriage and birth defects.

3. Smoking accounts for about 7% of all cancer deaths, including lung cancer deaths. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women and is one of the hardest cancers to treat.

Health / Careful! Don't Be A Victim Of Iritis by Afriglobalmedia: 10:53am On May 30, 2017
Careful! Don’t be a victim of Iritis

The iris is a circular, pigmented membrane that provides the eye its color and the opening in the center is the pupil of the eye. It is made up of muscular fibers that control the amount of light entering the pupil so that we can see clearly.
In some people, the iris can become inflamed. This is termed iritis.

Main Causes of Iritis

The cause of iritis cannot be determined. In some cases, iritis can be linked to eye trauma, genetic factors or certain diseases.

1. Injury to the eye: Blunt force trauma, a penetrating injury, or a burn from a chemical or fire can cause acute iritis.

2. Infections: Shingles on your face can cause iritis. Other infectious diseases, such as toxoplasmosis, histoplasmosis, tuberculosis and syphilis, can be linked iritis

3. Some drugs: Used to treat HIV infections can be a rare cause of iritis. Stopping these medications usually stops the iritis symptoms.

4. Diseases: People who develop certain autoimmune diseases because of a gene alteration that affects their immune systems might also develop acute iritis.

Symptoms of Iritis:

Symptoms of iritis can appear suddenly or occur gradually, and may vary from person to person.

1. Pain in the eye or brow region
2. Worsened eye pain when exposed to bright light
3. Reddened eye, especially adjacent to the iris
4. Small or funny shaped pupil
5. Blurred vision
6. Headache

Diagnosis for Iritis
With early detection, treatment can preserve vision. Eye drops will be prescribed, and treatment length varies on severity and cause of the iritis.
We also prescribe medicated glasses at our diagnostic center until medical treatment is completed.

When you visit Afriglobal Medicare, we may start by testing your vision.
This allows us to assess any differences in your vision between your eyes. It means that we can tell if the iritis is causing your vision to worsen.

After examination, if you have iritis, we will see some specific signs of inflammation in your eye that will allow us to make the diagnosis
You may also need further investigations if you have previously had iritis which may have affected your both eyes.

Tooth decay.
Did you know? Tooth decay is a common disorder, second only to the common cold. It usually occurs in children and young adults but can affect any person. It is the common cause of tooth loss in younger people.

How does tooth decay occur?
Bacteria are normally found in your mouth.
These bacteria change foods especially sugar and starch into acids. Bacteria, acid, food pieces, and saliva combine in the mouth to form a sticky substance called plaque. Plaque sticks to the teeth. It is most common on the back molars, just above the gum line on all teeth, and at the edges of fillings.

Plaque that is not removed from the teeth turns into a substance called tartar. Plaque and tartar irritate the gums, resulting in gingivitis and periodontitis.
Plaque begins to build up on teeth within 20 minutes after eating. If it is not removed, tooth decay will begin.

Symptoms
There may be no symptoms at early stage of the decay. If symptoms occur, they may include:
Tooth pain or achy feeling, particularly after sweet, hot, or cold foods and drinks.
Visible pits or holes in the teeth.

When to Contact a Medical Professional
Call your dentist if you have a toothache.
Make an appointment with Afriglobal Medicare for an examination if you have not had one in the last 6 months.

TO PREVENT TOOTH DECAY
1. Maintain oral hygiene
2. Brush the teeth or rinse the mouth with water after eating these foods.
3. Minimize snacking, which creates a constant supply of acid in the mouth.
4. Avoid constant sipping of sugary drinks or frequent sucking on candy and mints.
5. Use fluoride which is often recommended to protect against dental caries.
6. Sign up for our total health check plan which also include dental examinations

Food / Malnutrition: You Can Still Be At Risk Even If You Are Eating 5 Times A Day. by Afriglobalmedia: 12:04pm On May 25, 2017
Malnutrition: You can still be at risk even if you are eating five times a day.

Malnutrition is the condition that develops when the body does not get the right amount of the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients it needs to stay healthy

Malnutrition negatively affects brain development causing delays in motor and cognitive development. Malnutrition not only impacts growth in the short term but can also limit bone growth.

Signs of malnutrition include:

Impaired cognitive performance

Decreased IQ scores

Impair Learning abilities

Reduced social skills

Reduced language development for children

Reduced problem-solving abilities

Dangers of malnutrition:

1. It can lead to Iron deficiencies which can cause growth problems and problems with intellectual development, as well as a weakened immune system and greater exposure to those illnesses such as pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, measles and Aids.

2. It can cause Iodine deficiencies which can lead to irreversible brain lesions and mental retardation. Iodine deficiencies can also cause goiter (swelling of the thyroid), and some other thyroid problems.

3. Vitamin A deficiencies can cause blindness or death. Vitamin A (retinol) is found in animal foods such as liver, oily fish, or indeed in cod liver oil.

Malnutrition can lead to serious health problems if not checked. Ask us about a blood test to check for nutritional deficiency. #Afriglobal
