Health / BE CAREFUL Cervical Cancer Is A Silent Killer by Afriglobalmedia: 4:32pm On Feb 06, 2018
What is cervical cancer?
Cervical cancer occurs when abnormal cells on the cervix grow out of control. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina. Cervical cancer can often be successfully treated when it is found early through a Pap test.

Causes of cervical cancer?

Cervical cancer is mostly caused by a virus called human papillomavirus (HPV), which can be gotten by having sexual contact with someone who has it. Although, it is not all types of HPV causes cervical cancer. Some of them cause genital warts, but other types may not cause any symptoms.

Many adults have been infected with HPV at one time or the other, but the infection usually goes away on its own. Sometimes it can cause genital warts or lead to cervical cancer. This why it's important for women to have regular Pap tests. A Pap test can find changes in cervical cells before they turn into cancer. If you treat these cell changes, you may prevent cervical cancer.

What are the symptoms of cervical cancer?

1. Abnormal vaginal bleeding such as bleeding between menstrual periods, after sex, or after menopause.

2. Pain in the lower belly or pelvis.

3. Pain during sexual intercourse.

4. Abnormal vaginal discharge

5. Bleeding after going through menopause

6. Longer or heavier menstrual periods than usual

Diagnosis of Cervical Cancer

1. Cervical cancer can be diagnosed using a Pap smear or other procedures that sample the cervix tissue.

2. Chest X-rays, CT scan, MRI, and a PET scan is usually used to determine the stage of cervical cancer.

All these tests could be done at any of our diagnostics centres

Cervical Cancer Prevention

Can cervical cancer be prevented?

1. The Pap test is the best way to find cervical cell changes that can lead to cervical cancer. Regular Pap tests almost always show these cell changes before they turn into cancer. This may help prevent cervical cancer.

2. The virus that causes cervical cancer is spread through sexual contact. The best way to avoid getting a sexually transmitted infection is to not have sex. If you do have sex, practice safer sex, such as using condoms and limiting the number of sex partners you have.

3. If you are age 26 or younger, you can get the HPV vaccine, which protects against types of HPV that cause most cases of cervical cancer.

Take advantage of our 25% (not decided) discount for all cancer test throughout the month of February.

Health / See What Carrot Juice Can Do For You by Afriglobalmedia: 3:46pm On Jan 31, 2018
Getting it down with carrot juice this week.

Carrots are an excellent source of vitamins, nutrients, and fiber. But you don’t have to eat carrots to receive these nutritional benefits. Drinking carrot juice is an easy way to add carrots to your diet. Here are Five reasons why you should add carrot juice to your diet.

1. Increased metabolism
Since carrot juice is filling and low in calories, substituting this juice and ditching sodas and other sugary beverages can help you drop pounds faster.

Carrot juice also increases bile secretion, which can increase metabolism — the rate at which your body converts energy into food.

2. Stronger vision
It’s often said that eating carrots is good for your eyes. It turns out there’s the truth behind this claim. Carrot juice is a good source of beta-carotene, a type of vitamin A, which is one of the most powerful antioxidants.

3. Improved skin disorders.
If you have a history of skin problems, such as rashes or psoriasis, adding carrot juice to your diet may improve the appearance of your skin. Carrots contain vitamin C, which has healing properties. It helps skin recover faster from external wounds and trauma.

4. Boosted immune system
A cold or the flu can stick around for one or two weeks, making it difficult (or impossible) to go to work or school. To strengthen your immune system and help your body fight off infections, add carrot juice to your daily diet and maintain your physical health.

5. Reduced cancer risk
Cancer develops when abnormal cells form and multiply uncontrollably. Since antioxidants help stop cell damage, carrot juice may offer protection against various types of cancers.

Health / 4 Reasons Why You Should Chew Your Food Properly Before You Swallow. by Afriglobalmedia: 12:38pm On Dec 21, 2017
4 reasons why you should chew your food properly before you swallow.

Healthy digestion and nutrient absorption begin with the simple act of chewing your food. When you chew your food properly, your body releases digestive enzymes in the stomach that helps to break down food so that your body can convert it into energy.
Here are the reasons why you should chew your food properly before you swallow

1. Activates digestion process
Digestion process begins with chewing: chewing your food many times, breaks the food into tiny particles and secrete saliva that further helps in breaking down the food. Saliva has enzymes that help digest starch and fats in your mouth.

2. Helps absorb more nutrients
When you chew your food multiple times, it becomes easier for your intestines to absorb nutrients from the food

3. Exercises your teeth
Chewing food thoroughly is a wonderful exercise for your teeth. The saliva secreted while chewing food cleans up bacteria from your teeth and prevents tooth decay.

4. Benefits your intestine
When you eat in a hurry, there are chances that large food particles remain undigested in your intestine, leading to health problems such as constipation, gas, and diarrhea.

Health / See Why You Must Quit Smoking by Afriglobalmedia: 1:55pm On Nov 02, 2017
Quit Smoking. Lung cancer is deadly.
Lung cancer is a malignant lung disease primarily caused by cigarette smoking. It often has no obvious symptoms until the disease is quite advanced, and has a low rate of survival.

Treatment for lung cancer mainly involves surgery and chemotherapy, while radiation therapy and targeted drug therapies may also be used.

Causes of lung cancer:

The development of lung cancer is strongly associated with cigarette smoking, about 90% of lung cancers are attributable to tobacco use. Tobacco smoke contains more than 4,000 chemical compounds, many of which are cancer-causing (carcinogens). Passive smoking, i.e. the inhalation of tobacco smoke by non-smokers who live or work with smokers, is also an established risk factor for the development of lung cancer.

Signs, symptoms, and diagnosis

Symptoms of lung cancer are varied and warning signs are not always obvious. Up to 25% of people who get lung cancer display no symptoms. In people who do display symptoms, they include the following:

A persistent cough and hoarseness

Shortness of breath, wheezing, and chest pain

Blood-streaked sputum

Chest pain

Frequent episodes of bronchitis or pneumonia

Weight loss, weakness, and fatigue.

Diagnostic Testing:

Most patients with lung cancer develop symptoms late in the course of the disease. When symptoms arise, several tests are performed to confirm the diagnosis.

Chest X-ray provides a basic image of the lungs.

Computed tomography (CT) of chest provides more detailed images than a chest X-ray.

Sputum cytology is a test that detects cancer cells in secretions from the respiratory tract.

Biopsies are usually obtained during a bronchoscopy, a procedure in which a flexible instrument with a camera is passed through the mouth and trachea into the lungs, and samples of lung tissue are removed for examination under a microscope.

When enlarged lymph nodes are present, a lymph node biopsy is performed to check for cancer.

Prevention of Lung Cancer:

The most effective measure that can be taken to prevent the development of lung cancer is to stop smoking. Reducing exposure to passive smoking is also an effective method of prevention.

Health / Loneliness: See What It Does To Your Health by Afriglobalmedia: 10:40am On Oct 26, 2017
In adults, loneliness is a major precipitant of depression and alcoholism. And it increasingly appears to be the cause of a range of medical problems, some of which take decades to show up.

Here are five major ways loneliness can affect your health

1. Heart Disease: Middle-aged adults who live alone have a 24% increased risk of dying of heart disease, according to a 2012 Harvard study. “Research has consistently shown lonely people have a higher risk of heart disease.

2. Depression: When you are lonely, your brain hormones associated with stress such as cortisol become active, which can cause depression

3. Physical and mental problems: People who are lonely have more physical and mental health problems than those who feel connected to others

4. Less sleep: Lonely people are light sleepers, tend to toss and turn more, and feel more tired in the mornings — which of course, can be hazardous to psychological and physical wellbeing.

5. Blood pressure: Loneliness raises levels of circulating stress hormones and levels of blood pressure. It undermines regulation of the circulatory system so that the heart muscle works harder and the blood vessels are subject to damage by blood flow turbulence.

Health / Having Cloudy, Dark, Bloody, Or Strange Smelling-urine? Find Out Why by Afriglobalmedia: 11:38am On Oct 19, 2017
The urinary tract is comprised of the bladder, kidneys, ureters, and urethra. A urinary tract infection (UTI) is an infection of any part of the urinary system. Most infections involve the lower urinary tract.

Urinary tract infections occur when bacteria enter the urinary tract through the urethra and starts multiplying in the bladder. However, the urinary system is designed to keep out such microscopic invaders, but sometimes, these defenses fail, and when that happens, bacteria may take hold and grow into a full-blown infection in the urinary tract.

Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infection

How do you know if you have a urinary tract infection?

To identify a UTI, keep an eye out for the following symptoms:

1. A burning feeling when you urinate.

2. A frequent or intense urge to urinate, even though little comes out when you do.

3. Pain or pressure in your back or lower abdomen.

4. Cloudy, dark, bloody, or strange-smelling urine.

5. Feeling tired or shaky

6. Pelvic pain, in women — especially in the center of the pelvis and around the area of the pubic bone

If urinary tract infection remains untreated

If urinary tract infection remains untreated its complications may include

1. Permanent kidney damage from chronic kidney infection due to an untreated UTI.

2. Risk in pregnant women delivering low birth weight or premature infants.

3. Urethral narrowing in men from recurrent urethritis

4. Sepsis, a potentially life-threatening complication of an infection, especially if the infection works its way up your urinary tract to your kidneys.

Diagnosis

If a person has recurrent UTIs, a doctor may request further diagnostic testing to determine if anatomical issues or functional issues are to blame. Such tests may include:

Urinalysis and Urine MCS

Diagnostic imaging - assessing the urinary tract using ultrasound

CT and MRI scanning

Radiation tracking, or X-rays

At Afriglobal Medicare, we advise patients with the above-mentioned symptoms to have a urinalysis, and Urine MCS test with us, this will help you know exactly what you are treating

Health / Digital Over Traditional X-ray In Medical Diagnosis – Advantages by Afriglobalmedia: 11:59am On Oct 10, 2017
Traditional X-ray methods broke the ground and have been used in medical diagnosis for over 120 years. However, technology has come a long way and its only natural things change in the field of medical diagnosis too.

Digital radiography provides so many advantages over the conventional film that it’s easy to see why practices are making the transition to digital dental X-ray systems in waves. X-rays tend to get a bad rap for radiation and health concerns – but when done digitally, there are many benefits;

1. Less Exposure to radiation:

Digital x-rays use no less than 70% radiation than traditional film x-rays. Digital image receptors are much more sensitive to low levels of radiation compared to film/screen, therefore require less quantity to produce a diagnostic radiographic image.

2. No chemical developers: Nobody likes dealing with harmful developing chemicals and fixing solutions. Digital radiography eliminates the need for automatic film processors, taking with it the odor, wait times and space they require.

3. Time and productivity savings: Beyond the convenience and patient comfort perks, digital x-ray technology displays viewable images in as little as three seconds, saving time for both the patients and technicians.

4. Achievability: Storage of images occurs on servers, rather than entire warehouses of archived hard copies that need to be manually purged every 7 years.

Using digital imaging is more environmentally friendly, as it alleviates the need for chemicals and film paper to be disposed of. These facts aren't lost on us at Afriglobal Medicare and that's why we put the best and environmentally friendly technology for the treatment of clients above all other considerations.

Health / Monkeypox: What You Should Know by Afriglobalmedia: 1:38pm On Oct 09, 2017
Are there rodents in your vicinity? Do you live in Nigeria or anywhere in West or Central Africa? Then you should know about monkeypox.

Yes, it was first identified in laboratory monkeys, hence the name, but it is transmitted to humans by rodents or primates and by a secondary human-to-human transmission.

So how do you get it?

1. It is infectious: The monkeypox virus is transmitted via contact with an infected animal’s blood, flesh, bite, or an infected human.

2. It is a virus: Viral infections are generally harder to treat than bacteria’s and the Monkeypox virus is a rare type.

3. It can cause fatal illnesses and quick deaths, especially in younger age groups.

4. It has NO treatment or vaccine but outbreaks can be controlled.

5. The incubation period is 5 -21 days: Symptoms typically last 14 – 21 days with severe cases occurring among children with longer virus exposure.

6. Monkeypox virus can only be diagnosed definitively in the laboratory by a number of different tests.

Symptoms

It manifests as various stages of rash and an intense weakness among other things.

Rashes, ranging from a few to several thousand, begins on the face, then palms and feet. The lesions (or rashes) later become fluid-filled blisters and lastly crusts which can affect the oral membranes, Instruments, eyelids, and eyeballs.

What do you do?

1. Cook animal flesh properly before consuming: Monkeypox virus remains active in infected primates or rodent even after their death.

2. Stay away from body fluids, lesions, respiratory tract secretions, or objects recently contaminated by Monkeypox patients.

Transmission occurs via droplets respiratory particles.

3. Don’t pick up stray animals especially if you live in the tropics.

4. Immediately quarantine infected animals or humans. Close physical contact is a significant risk factor and protective equipment must be worn while providing care for patients.

5. Regular hand-wash is encouraged.

Health / Be Careful Of Hypertension, It's The Silent Killer by Afriglobalmedia: 7:11am On Sep 26, 2017
Hypertension the silent killer.
High blood pressure is also known as hypertension. Blood pressure is the amount of force exerted against the walls of the arteries as blood flows through them.

According to businessdayonline health page, Hypertension prevalence in Nigeria is about 30–45%, but only about half of Nigerians know this, primarily because it rarely causes any noticeable symptoms and is usually detected only incidentally during a routine physical examination.
When hypertension is left untreated, it promotes atherosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries) and increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney damage and destruction of tiny blood vessels in the eye, which can result in vision loss.

For these reasons hypertension is often called “the silent killer.”
It is therefore important to check your blood pressure on a regular basis, at least 3 times year. If you have risk factors for high blood pressure, including being overweight, sedentary or if you have a family history of hypertension or heart disease, you should have it checked more often.

Causes of High Blood Pressure
Age: The older you are, the higher your risk of having high blood pressure
Family history: If you have close family members with hypertension, your chances of developing it are significantly higher
Obesity: Both overweight and obese people are more likely to develop high blood pressure, compared to people of normal weight.
Smoking: Smoking also reduces the blood's oxygen content so the heart has to pump faster in order to compensate, causing a rise in blood pressure.
Other causes can be alcohol intake, high salt intake, high fatty diets, etc.

Noticeable symptoms of High Blood Pressure
1. Headache - usually, this will last for several days.
2. Nausea - a sensation of unease and discomfort in the stomach with an urge to vomit.
3. Vomiting - less common than just nausea.
4. Dizziness - Lightheadedness, unsteadiness,
5. Blurred or double vision (diplopia).
6. Epistaxis - nosebleeds.

Culture / Stop These Habits To Save Your Life by Afriglobalmedia: 11:05am On Sep 07, 2017
These are some of the regular health destructive habits you may be doing unconsciously. Some of these habits may have adverse effects on your health without your knowledge. You will maintain proper hygiene if you cut these habits.
1. Picking of Nose in Public:
This is mostly done unconsciously in the public. You can pick your nose and wash your hands in your private and not in the public

2. Sneezing or coughing without a handkerchief or tissue:
Using a handkerchief could reduce the viral/bacterial load aerosolized and perhaps significantly reduce the risk of spreading the infection such as tuberculosis and other airborne diseases. Learn to cough or sneeze your upper sleeve, not your hands

3. Probing your fingers inside your ears during irritation: There is nothing more irritating and distracting than an itch in your ear. Anyone who has ever suffered from this common ailment knows how frustrating it is. It seems as though the only feeling of relief comes from scratching or probing with fingers or q-tips. While this may bring temporary comfort, it is actually a very harmful way to tackle the problem. It is therefore advisable to clean your ears with cotton buds. However, experts have warned excessive cleaning out your ears with cotton buds may also irritate the ear canal, and cause infection

4. Using the restroom without washing of hands: Thorough washing of the hands with soap and water following bathroom use is vital in preventing the spread of hand-foot-mouth diseases. Hands come in contact with many bacteria and other contaminants when using the restroom, touching surfaces touched by other people, handling raw eggs or poultry, or changing a diaper. If you don't wash your hands before eating or preparing food you can ingest these bacteria, which could cause severe illnesses.
