Two parallel congresses were held by the Peoples Democratic Party in Ibadan on Saturday with Seyi Makinde and Rashidi Ladoja leading each of the factions that held the two congresses.

The congresses, which were held to elect the state executives of the party, exposed the crack in the party despite the reconciliation of the Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee. Our correspondent learned that the party split after disagreement between the two factions over sharing of positions in the executive during a meeting held late on Friday night.

At the Makinde-led congress, held in the Oke Ado area of Ibadan, three key officers were elected, with Jacob Adetoro emerging as chairman while Segun Ogunlade was elected vice-chairman. Wasiu Adeleke also emerged as the faction’s secretary.

Sen Hosea Agboola; wife of the late Ibadan politician, Bose Adedibu; a former Deputy Governor in the state, Hazeem Gbolarumi; a former House of Representatives Majority Leader, Mulikat Akande-Adeola; Bisi Olopoeniyan and Taiwo Oluyemi were present at the congress.

While the two congresses were on, the monitoring team from the national headquarters of the party, led by the congress committee chairman, Liyel Imoke, met both factions at a neutral venue for several hours to discuss the rift but it ended in a deadlock, with the two factions failing to agree on one congress.

PoliticsSympathisers Besiege Tinubu’s House Over Son’s Death by afroniger(op): 9:20pm On Nov 02, 2017
Lagos – Scores of sympathisers have continued to besiege the house of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Sen. Bola Tinubu, Lagos, to commiserate the loss of his first son, Mr Jide Tinubu. Among the numerous people sighted on Thursday were; Tinubu’s political associates, businessmen and women, religious leaders, neighbours, friends, family among others.

A Lagos lawmaker, Mr Gbolahan Yishawu, representing Eti-Osa Constituency II at the Lagos State House of Assembly, described the death as “a loss too painful’’. “It is not a pleasant moment for any of us close to Asiwaju, to Lagos State and entire Nigerians. It is very sad. Nobody will wish his enemy to lose a child. “For the father and mother to have lost their child is very painful, but we have to keep glorifying God,’’ Yishawu said.

A Chieftain of Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, who described the demise of Jide as a big loss urged Tinubu to take heart. “This is a serious matter; a lot of hope has been dashed. It is not an easy thing. Only God can console the family,’’ he said.

The Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Opeyemi Oke, said in the condolence register that “it is with a great shock I received the news.’’ A childhood friend of Tinubu, Alhaji Akeem Danmola, said that “may God never allow this kind of death again to Asiwaju, it is too painful.’’

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) during his condolence visit, Alhaji Lawal Animashaun, the APC Divisional Chairman in Ikorodu, urged Tinubu to take heart. Animashaun said: “It is very painful but Asiwaju has to take heart. Nobody will like to bury his child but we cannot query the Almighty God.’’

Other sympathisers include: Elder Tayo Soyode, father of the Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, league of Imams, Yoruba Tennis Club, Onikan and Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede, Lagos State Chairman of NURTW.

Others were: Mr Femi Falana, a constitutional lawyer, Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo, delegates from Ondo State Government led by Mr Ifedayo Abogunde, the Secretary to the State Government among others. Mr Demola Oshodi, Personal Assistant to the APC national leader, received the sympathisers on behalf of Tinubu. Tinubu was said to have traveled out of the country Thursday morning. (NAN)

Yesterday, the South African police officers staged their own protest, accusing Nigerians residing in the council of intimidation and false accusation.

This is coming after Nigerians stormed the police station on October 11th to protest, after a 25-year-old Nigerian man identified as Ibrahim O. Badmus was allegedly killed by South African police officers at his home on October 10th.

Reports say South African policemen raided his home at Vanderbijlpark triangle on suspicion that he sells hard drugs. They handcuffed him and used excessive pepper spray on him. He passed out and died due to suffocation.

Here are photos from the protest from South African police who are accusing Nigerians residents of false accusation.

PoliticsIgbo Group Reveals Person Allegedly Behind Monkeypox Vaccine Hoax In South East by afroniger(op): 7:25pm On Oct 18, 2017
http://dailypost.ng/2017/10/18/igbo-group-reveals-person-allegedly-behind-monkeypox-vaccine-hoax-south-east/

A socio-activist group, Igbos for Nigeria Movement, INM, has identified Emmanuel Kanu, the younger brother of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu as the face allegedly behind the recent Monkey Pox vaccine hoax in the South East region of the country.

The group also urged the Federal Government through law enforcement agencies to stop IPOB from continuing to create panic across the country even after it has been outlawed as a terrorist organization.

INM further demanded a thorough investigation of any financial transactions between Igbos people in government and IPoB since this would amount to financing terrorism.

Mazi Ifeanyi Igwe, National President of Igbos for Nigeria Movement, who spoke in Abuja on Wednesday, lamented that the latest round of propaganda by IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, has done untold damage to the Igbo cause with his allegation that soldiers were forcefully injecting students with virus as the fear of vaccines createED by the hoax could potentially make parents avoid lifesaving vaccinations.

He called relevant security agencies to unravel the true identity of whoever is posing as Emma Powerful since no such entity has ever come forward at any of the various fora that had convened to discuss the marginalization of the Igbo nation.

According to him, “The brazen way whoever this character is continues to tell lies that terrorizes the populace, especially Igbos, is because he is using a fake identity. Look at the trauma he put parents through in the southeast with the hoax about the Monkey Pox virus and how soldiers were injecting school children with it, which turned out to be false but the panic spread across the whole place nonetheless. Now in future, parents will be reluctant to vaccinate their children against diseases like measles, polio and other preventable childhood killer diseases; it is Igbo children that will die as a result of this mischief of spreading fake news.

“The source of the fake news has been established as IPOB’s spokesperson, who goes by the alias of Emma Powerful. He signed the statements asking parents to take their children from school alleging that soldiers were forcefully ejecting pupils with killer viruses. It was the same terrorist that has been inciting IPOB members to attack anyone that goes out to vote in Anambra State governorship election in November. A large chunk of IPOB’s hate messages come from this faceless individual.

“The thing that is even more of concern is that it has been said severally that there is nobody like ‘Emma Powerful’ who is merely an alias for Emmanuel Kanu, the junior brother to that fugitive from justice and IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

“It will interest you to note that in the hours and days after IPOB members confronted soldiers on Operation Python Dance II, if one compares the utterances and interviews by Emmanuel Kanu with statements by Emma Powerful the conclusion would be to challenge law enforcement agencies to repeat the same exercise and arrive at their own conclusions.

“I therefore call on the relevant law enforcement agencies to draw on the relevant provisions of the anti-terrorism legislations in the country to unmask the identity of Emma Powerful to end his reign of terror that has caused unnecessary panic in our states,” Igwe demanded.

He noted that the federal government, the military and security services owe Nigerians explanations on how it was possible that a group that has been designated a terrorist organization by the court in line with the anti-terrorism law continues to issue statements like a legal entity.

Igwe further accused governors of the five southeast states of playing to the gallery with their proscription of IPoB since the group continue to freely operate in their jurisdictions after the proscription including issuing the statement that caused panic with a warning that a state of emergency may eventually be declared in the region because of their lukewarm attitude.

Meanwhile, the National President of Igbos For Nigeria Movement warned that IPOB will not stop causing problems in the southeast if certain political office holders and top businessmen do not stop funding the outlawed terror group.

He stressed that law enforcement agents must immediately conduct a thorough investigation of any financial transactions between Igbo people in government and IPOB since this would amount to aiding and abetting terrorism financing.

“The information we are getting about the extent of financing available to IPoB is worrisome because any group with that much money can easily destabilize any geo-political zone of the country. I do not expect that the Federal Government continues to allow this kind of criminal financing to continue since it is those of us from the southeast that will suffer the consequences if these people successfully implement their evil plot,” he said.

Calls put across to IPOB Spokesman, Emma Powerful to get his reaction failed. Also calls to Emmanuel Kanu did not connect.

i know tinubu and his battles for democracy and I respect him and regard him to be a foremost yoruba leader. But I'll take you back to the point I said this title is not meant for a politician. Its meant for someone rugged, unafraid and ready to loose everything and his life.
While i support the Alaafin's choice in this regard, I feel you are going too far in your characterizations of the criteria for the candidate selection of the title. I heard from the grapevine that the title was Tinubu's for the taking if he really wanted it. Besides, Gani Adams himself has confessed that he almost rejected it due to initial fear until he was persuaded to accept it.

It's like you are suggesting that Abiola and SL Akintola whom were politicians were poor choices on account of their being politicians? Did Abiola achieve more politically than Tinubu or Awolowo for him to have been more deserving of it than both men? Awolowo is arguably the greatest Yoruba politician till date who was persecuted and sent to jail for fighting for his people's interests. Are you saying that SLA was more deserving of the title when it was conferred on him than Awo then? You can express your opinion without diminishing the sacrificial attributes and pedigree of other potentially deserving candidates of the title just to prop up Gani Adam's selection.

•I'M POISED TO RECONCILE WITH YORUBA LEADERS I'VE DIFFERENCES WITH, HE SAYS

THE Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Otunba Gani Adams, said on Tuesday that the major reason why he opted to accept the chieftaincy title is to further promote the interest of Yoruba race.

Otunba Adams, who is also the National Coordinator of Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), said this while speaking with journalists in Lagos, on what prompted him to take up the war title conferred by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi 111.

This was just as Adams, who expressed the belief that his new position would moderate his radicalism, said he was determined to reconcile with most Yoruba leaders he had differences with.

According to the OPC leader, who said he was scared initially when approached to take up the title because of the mystery that surrounded the death of his immediate two predecessors, including the late Bashorun MKO Abiola, disclosed that he later resolved to take up the position as he became convinced that taken up the title would offer him the opportunity to further promote the culture and aspiration of the Yoruba race.

He said it took him two months to arrive at the decision, adding that he came to the decision after he had consulted many prominent Yoruba leaders as well as undertaking a spiritual consultation.

“It took me another two months consulting physically and spiritually, I consulted many Yoruba leaders, including Chief Ayo Adebanjo and Chief Olu Falae. And whenever I am in any Yoruba gathering, I do tell them I want to contest for the position and most of them gave me their blessings,” he said.

Speaking further, Otunba, while expressing the belief that his new position would moderate his radicalism, said he was determined to reconcile with most Yoruba leaders he had differences with, and was prepared to meet with them.

According to him, the leaders include the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the National Leader of OPC, Dr. Ferederick Fasehun, among others.

He maintained that, the position of Are Ona KaKanfo is always reserved for courageous young blood, charismatic and focused personality.

He said it was also meant for somebody who have the interest of the Yoruba race and is considered loyal to the Alaafin of Oyo.

PoliticsWe Must Restructure Before 2019 – Falae by afroniger(op): 8:34am On Oct 14, 2017
http://sunnewsonline.com/nigeria-doesnt-need-restructuring-lawal-kaita/

•Enough of injustice in Nigeria

Chief Olu Falae, the former minister of finance and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation(SGF) has cautioned that Nigeria must be restructured before the next general elections in 2019. The octogenarian who was also the joint presidential candidate of the Alliance for Democracy, AD and the All Peoples Party, APP in the 1999 presidential election believes that for the country to move forward, she must go back to the 1963 constitution. He made the remarks and more in this interview with WILLY EYA.

Recently, Nigeria celebrated 57 years of independence amid discordant voices on the vexed issue of restructuring and you are one of the Yoruba leaders who recently converged on Ibadan to take a position on the issue. Do you think all these efforts would eventually lead to restructuring?

You know I am a leader in the South West and at the National convention, I was elected as the leader of the Yoruba delegation. So, I am central to the Yoruba position. The Yoruba position is my position and it is the same position I canvassed in my book, ‘The way forward for Nigeria’ which I launched since 2005 in Lagos. What we mean by restructuring is going back to the Independence Constitution which our leaders negotiated with the British between 1957 and 1959. It was on that basis that the three regions agreed to go to Independence as one united country. So, it was a negotiated constitution. This is because, if the three regions were not able to agree, there would not have been one united independent Nigeria. But because the three regions at that time negotiated and agreed to package a constitution, that is why they agreed to go to Independence together. When the military came in 1966 and threw away the constitution, they threw away the negotiated agreement among the three regions, which was the foundation of a united Nigeria.

So, the military did not only throw away the constitution but a political consensus negotiated and agreed by our leaders of the three regions in those days. When we say restructuring now, we are saying let us go back substantially to that constitution which gave considerable autonomy to the regions. For example, each region at that time collected its revenue and contributed the agreed proportion to the centre. But when the military came, they turned it round and took everything to the centre. That could not have been accepted by Ahmadu Bello, Nnamdi Azikiwe or Obafemi Awolowo.

This constitution we are using was made by late Gen Sani Abacha and the military; and Abacha came from only one part of Nigeria, so he wrote a constitution that favoured his own part of Nigeria. That is why I am saying, let us restructure and go back to what all of us agreed before. That is the meaning of restructuring. The regions used to be federating units, but in today’s Nigeria, they would now be called federal regions because states have been created in the regions. So in the West, you now have federation of Yoruba states which would belong to the Nigerian union at the centre. So, it is not like the region of old with all the powers. No. It is now going to be a coordinator of the states in the zone. That is what we mean by restructuring. And the regions would have a considerable autonomy as they used to have. For example, for the younger people, they may not know that every region then had its own constitution.

There were four constitutions at independence –the Federal constitution, Western constitution, Eastern constitution and Northern constitution. That was how independent they were and every region had an ambassador in London. The ambassadors for the regions were called Agent General so that you do not confuse them with that of Nigeria then called High Commissioner. So, Nigeria had four ambassadors in London. The ambassador for Nigeria then called a High Commissioner was M.T Mbu. The ambassador for Eastern Nigeria then was Mr Jonah Chinyere Achara, Western Nigeria was Mr Omolodun and for Northern Nigeria, it was Alhaji Abdulmalik. There were four of them. That was the kind of arrangement we agreed to, but the military threw it away and gave us this over-centralised unitary constitution. So, we said this is not acceptable any more; we must go back to the negotiated constitution which gave considerable autonomy to the regions, so that they can compete in a healthy manner. For example, Chief Obafemi Awolowo wanted to introduce free education in the West and other regions said they could not afford it, but he went ahead to introduce it in the Western region. He said he wanted to pay a minimum of five shillings a day, while others were paying two and three shillings. He went ahead and passed the law, making five shillings the minimum wage in Western Nigeria.

There was no problem with that. In Western Nigeria, the constitution provided for a House of Assembly and the House of Chiefs. In Eastern Nigeria, there was no House of Chiefs because they did not think they needed one. There was no problem with that and that is the kind of Nigeria we negotiated in London, but that is different from what we have today. So, we are saying let us go back to that arrangement which all of us agreed at independence and not what Abacha imposed on us, which is very partial, unfair and one-sided. That is the meaning of restructuring; it is to restructure unfairness and give semi-autonomy to the federating units.

Why does the North seem reluctant to shift ground on this vexed issue of restructuring? Based on the arguments from various quarters so far, it appears the whole South and even the Middle Belt have reached a consensus on the need to restructure Nigeria as against the position of the core North which still believes that the status quo should remain.

The North has not spoken. But when you say the North, what do you mean? I ask this question because the Middle Belt which constitutes about nine or 10 states are on the same page with the South on restructuring. We had a meeting in Abuja last week and I was there where we agreed on restructuring. And the states represented there by their leaders, were about nine. They include Benue, Plateau, Taraba, Kogi, Adamawa, Taraba, Kwara, southern part of Bauchi, southern part of Borno and southern Kaduna. So, when you say the North, you must define what you mean because nine states out of the 19 in the North are in support of restructuring. It is the North West alone which is now in the minority and which have not announced its position. It is meeting and setting up committees and also our meeting in Abuja last week also set up a committee to engage the North West on this matter. The idea is to fully persuade them to go back to what all of us agreed at independence.

To some people, going back to the 1963 constitution may not work considering that so many things have changed in Nigeria. For instance, 36 states have been created unlike the period in question when we had only regions and not states. Don’t you think there is merit in their argument?

But I have told you that when we go back to the 1963 constitution, the regional government of today would be a federal regional government because of the creation of states. That is not an issue. For instance in the East, it would be a federal regional government of the East. It would be the same thing in the South West and other regions. Why should we not go back to that arrangement? That is what we agreed before. How do you expect us to accept the unfairness in this constitution which gave Lagos State only 20 local governments and gave old Kano State 77 local governments? Is that not injustice? That is unfair and nobody would accept that. No reasonable man can argue that the unfair unitary constitution that we have today should continue. But at the same time, those of us do not want Nigeria to break up. What we want is that all of us should remain in Nigeria, but it would be a more balanced Nigeria, where the ethnic groups are free to pursue their priorities. The South West in those days believed in free education and we had it.

Those who did not want it did not have free education. Chief Awolowo decided to have the Muslim Western Board to take care of the Western people going to Mecca. The other people did not have it. Fine! We decided to have a House of Chiefs and the East did not want to have one and there was no problem. That is what we need. Nobody should be forced to behave like another person. Uniformity does not mean unity. This is because we are different people with different objectives, cultures and values.

A heterogeneous society cannot operate a unitary government. Look at Britain that is our former colonial power, they are of the same race, colour, religion, language and culture and yet today, you have four governments in Britain. They include the parliament in Scotland, the Assembly in Cardiff, the Parliament in Northern Ireland and the Westminster defacto federal government. So Britain itself has gone into a federation although they are homogeneous. Here we have about 600 different ethnic groups, not the same culture, not the same language and you want to treat us as a homogeneous country and a unitary government. It is not possible. It does not make sense.

The question by a school of thought in the North is: why is the call for restructuring more vehement now that President Muhammadu Buhari who is of the Northern extraction is superintending over Nigeria.? Their argument is, why did the South not champion the call for restructuring when former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, both of the Southern region were in office?

Before Obasanjo was in power, in 1991 and 1992, we launched the request for restructuring. I remember the Press Conference addressed by Chief Anthony Enahoro. Former President Obasanjo was not near power in 1991. My book, The way forward for Nigeria’ was launched in 2005 and a whole chapter is on restructuring. They are only trying to tell lies and confuse issues but ask them, is it not true that we have an independent constitution and that their leader agreed to it and signed it. Are they more Northerner than the Sauduana of Sokoto, or are they wiser than him? So, they should not ask that sort of question and in any case, ask them why do they think I, a Yoruba man should agree to old Kano’s 77 local governments and Lagos State only 20 states. It is because they share revenue every month and they share it equally to the local governments. Kano has 77 and Lagos has only 20, why do you think we should accept that cheating? Who would tell me that kind of nonsense? Why don’t they believe on equity and fairness?

The money is coming from here. In any case, it should be clear that if Britain cannot run a unitary government, Britain with the same culture, language, religion and everything, and they now have four governments and they are asking for independence now, if they are asking for independence in a homogeneous country like Britain, why do they think that they can sustain a quasi unitary constitution imposed on us by a Northern military officer called Gen Sani Abacha? You have more questions to ask them than they have to ask you. I just want to conclude that restructuring is inevitable.

With the tension in the country now arising from all manner of agitations and particularly the crescendo for restructuring, what do you expect on the road to the next general election in 2019?

Look, who is talking of 2019? We are talking of restructuring now and you are talking of 2019. Most people are not interested in an election, if it is going to take place within this un-restructured Nigeria. The election would produce the same injustice and uncertainty. We must restructure before 2019.

These people are just playing word games. Devolution of powers in itself is a form restructuring so it's all semantics. All those that believe in restructuring, devolution of powers to states, or whatever, should meet and harmonize their positions. Whichever word they want to use, the fact remains that the system needs to be overhauled.

voiceofthetruth:
No, the real concern should be the constant mockery and vilification of innocent Igbo victims by Yorubas. How many times on this forum have we seen the Yorubas support and extricate the south African killers by laying all faults in the Igbos and insisting they deserve it. I'm just pointing out the facts, nothing more.
I understand where you are coming from, even though I don't support drug trafficking in any ramification, but I am not amongst those that mock igbo victims in South Africa because in the end their police don't give a damn about the tribe of their victims. I once advised Nigerians on a thread to get the hell out of that racist country when some wanted to protect themselves from mobs. I blame Nigerian government for abandoning their citizens in that country.

Stop this nonsense. It's not funny. While most of the Nigerians arrested and accused of drug trafficking in south Africa may proportionally be from igbo tribe, it is only to be expected that other tribes will also become collateral damage at some point. At the end of the day South african police don't care much whether a Nigerian is igbo, Yoruba or whatever when they want to carry out their raids. The real concern should be the fact that Nigerian lives are not worth much to south African police these days.
