What are they doing that Lagos isn't doing? Or what are they not doing that other states are doing?

Are we not in the same Nigeria?

PTF should visit nearby Kogi State on similar fact finding mission.

The 14-Day quarantine can be waived for them.

Crime / Forensics In Africa: Accepting Sophistication In Tackling Crimes by agentzico: 10:41am On Aug 13, 2019
Kidnapping, murder, sexual assault, theft, terrorism, banditry, drug and human trafficking, human right violations.
These crimes are among the topmost vices our society.

When will our police and other law enforcement upgrade their mode of operations in fighting crime?
It will not be bad for our police force to begin to deploy first rate forensic techniques in their investigations.

Perhaps there is need to build their capacities and intellectual orientation in thinking of crime-fighting as a science that requires searching and obtaining of evidence first, before making arrests.

African countries need to accept advanced technologies to effectively tackle crime.

Hence, the forensic community within and outside Africa are organizing a PanAfrican forensic event where experts, professionals of various fields can proffer scientifically tested solutions to the security and law enforcement community.

Events / The PanAfrican Forensic Conference 2019 by agentzico: 6:34pm On Aug 12, 2019
Many inmates in prison today are innocent of the crimes that they've been accused of.

Many citizens have been victims of police and other security assaults
Investigation after arrest without sufficient evidence is fast becoming the norm

Crime scene investigation (CSI) is still archaic in Nigeria and most African countries

When was the last time one saw a crime scene demarcated with the "Do Not Cross" yellow tape? Or how many times have we seen crime scene investigators use latex gloves to search for evidence?

Do you know that advanced climes use forensic applications to track human and drug traffickers?

Do you know that with forensics, terrorism activities like suicide bombings can be effectively tackled and the perpetrators caught?

Why are African countries yet to adopt forensics into normal investigation?

Rape cases are rampant, yet only a fraction of the victims get justice because our criminal justice systems have not been developed to effectively recover, preserve, process and interpreted the forensic evidence required to track, apprehend, prosecute and convict perpetrators.

It is for these problems and the quest to promote forensic science in Africa that the PanAfrican Forensic Conference is being organized.

This event is for forensic experts, students, lawyers and judges, human rights activists and civil society organizations, forensic and security related firms, security and law enforcement agents and forensic enthusiasts.

Crime / Enhancing Nigeria's Forensics Development: What It Takes by agentzico: 10:55am On Mar 14, 2019
Forensic Science has long been in existence with breathtaking discoveries accompanying its global development. Its growth has been in tandem with its diverse applications which transcends several industries and fields of study.

But the most visible application of forensic science has been in administration of justice, especially in proving the innocence or guilt of a suspect. Countries that have invested heavily on scientific innovations and technologies seem to benefit more from the utilization of forensics in strengthening their criminal justice systems.

Barring the back clashes that has trailed the misuse of forensics - mostly due to inability of stakeholders to understand its limitations, forensics has been a force for good. It has helped to exonerate several wrongfully convicted persons through techniques such as DNA Forensics and fingerprints analysis.

Yet, many countries are yet fully adopt forensic procedures and techniques into their criminal justice systems. Many factors could be responsible for that.

Even though, Nigeria is beginning to accept forensic evidence in some of its judicial procedures, an established framework to implement forensic methods at the core of its criminal and civil investigations is still lacking.

Therefore, the need to take bold steps to entrench forensics at core of every civil and criminal litigation, arises. This can only be possible when the steps highlighted below are considered:
1. A Forensic Science Accrediting/Regulation Body
2. Adequate Number of Fully Equipped Forensic Labs With Trained Personnel..

Crime / Forensic Science:Adopting Mordern Crime Scene Investigation Methods In Nigeria by agentzico: 9:12pm On Jun 18, 2018
How many innocent people have been erroneously arrested and continue to be detained for an offense they are not guilty of?

For how long will offenders of heinous crimes such as rape and murder continue to perpetrate their evil work unchecked without convictions?

Must we wait for the suspect to confess before we feel the case can be won? What if they stick to their guns that they are innocent? What then do investigators have? Lie Coercion? Torture?

When would real forensic crime scene investigatioyn replace this our 'Nigerian way' of investigating crimes?

Do we have what it takes to have functional Crimelabs with adequately trained DNA forensic scientists, fingerprinting experts, forensic psychologists, forensic pathologists and toxicologists, forensic digital examiners and the likes to actually get the required forensic evidence that would nail the culprits?
Maybe. Maybe not.

The time has come to do the needful and restore Nigerians' faith in the criminal justice system. How?

Crime / Crime Labs And Their Forensic Integrity by agentzico: 3:57pm On Jun 02, 2018
When flawed forensic evidence gets into court, the integrity of the criminal justice system becomes questionable. One place where forensic evidence can be exposed to bias and errors is the lab - the crimelab.
Crime labs are like any other scientific laboratories but differ only in purpose or use of results. A crime lab processes crime scene evidence to determine who the offender is, the nature of the crime and prodces the proof of innocence or guilt of suspects in a criminal case.
Objectivity in evidence analysis and interpretation is another distinctive feature of crime labs. When evidence, say a blood swab from the crime scene is brought into a crimelab, the lab scientists or technologists may never have to know from whom and where the DNA evidence came from. It is not their business, and even if they knew, they cannot state that knowledge in the lab report which would be presented in court.
Forensic scientists who provide forensic expert analyses and interpretations of evidential materials should be free from sentiments and put bias at arm's length, no matter the personalities involved or interest in the case. That is what brilliant lawyers should watch out for. The credibility and integrity of forensic analytic process should be maintained at all times.
Another important feature of crime labs is strict compliance with quality standards and protocols. One of the quickest and easiest ways to discredit forensic evidence in courts is the answer to the following questions;

Culture / When We Wrongfully Identify Someone As A Terrorist by agentzico: 7:36am On Sep 06, 2016
Do you know that there is an increase in the rate at which young people successfully carry out targeted terrorists attacks without direct coordination from terrorists organizations?
Terrorism experts call them, the “lone wolves”.

The sequence

It is much easier to classify people under the terrorism umbrella based on certain factors such as country, religion, ethnicity, mode of dressing and tongue.

When you see a man wearing a long flowing white gown, with a long beard and a round cap on top of his head, holding a black briefcase and walking into New York's JFK airport, what comes to our mind?

Imagine the frenzy among the security personnel. He immediately becomes a suspect! A terrorist! Why? His dressing. You can’t tell what a terrorist looks like by his dressing alone! Marc Sageman, an expert witness on terrorism cases revealed that the problem with profiling is that many people “might fit a profile but not act” while the real terrorist themselves “don’t fit a pattern”.

People bearing names like Abdullah, Aisha or Kareem are most likely to have face stricter scrutiny and raise more suspicions than those bearing names like Murdock, Charlotte or John. The possible reason?....
Kareem is most likely a Muslim. Why should the names given to us based on our beliefs and cultures be used as tool against us? Don’t we know that targeting people because of who they are is totally wrong and counterproductive?

Why should this level of suspicion hold for a person of Syrian origin and another person from Jamaica? What of between a South African and a Somalian? A Rwandan and an Algerian?

Changing techniques

Terrorists’ organizations have effected changes into their modus operandi to avoid detection and effectively hit their targets. They must avoid raising suspicion at all cost. Unlike before, their members are now difficult to identify. You can hardly declare that “this” or “that” man is a terrorist.

Then, it was possible to easily identify suicide bombers because the suicide vests they wear made them look odd in their dressing. Some were made to wear suits on top of these vests. They looked uneasy and sometimes sweating. Always looking intense and when they smile at you…even a two year old will scream at seeing the mischievous smile of the devil himself! That was characteristic of them.

But now, they dress I suits with lighter vests that we may not notice anything odd. They are now reaching out to the rich-young people with adequate literacy. The wiser, the better.

Read the 17 Revealing facts about suicide bombers

Though the traditional means of brainwashing new members such as community or group hangouts and worship centers are still being used, terrorist organizations have gone “cloud”. The mode of attracting and recruiting young people into their ranks is now online. They have set up websites with sufficient resources to make one ‘want to become a member’. And they succeed in it.

Sites like Youtube and Twitter have become free, easily accessible and handy tools for indoctrination and propagation of extremist ideologies. So, technology has now become a useful tool for planting and breeding the seeds of terror! Most disturbing is the fact that terrorist groups like ISIS and Boko Haram have proven very proficient in using the social media for their propaganda.

Now, since keeping long beards instantly makes one an eligible suspect, becoming clean shaven is not a problem. (“If that’s what you want…okay!”).

A scholar in security studies once warned his son who was studying in another country that now profiles young college students who keep to themselves and don’t make friends to “start making friends now or be marked a terrorist”. Imagine that!

Evaluating Effectiveness

How effective have these profiling been in really identifying the members of terrorist groups? In spite of the efforts employed by security agents to identify these agents of terror, how has the practice of using traits such as dress mode that is particular to certain cultures, religion, race or language really helped in reducing global terrorism?

Is it not possible that the world’s failure to address the root causes of al-Qaida led to the creation of ISIS? Don’t we think that the usage of these techniques no matter how discreet or tactical, has instead, led to increased apathy for governments fighting terrorism and sympathy for the terrorist groups?

Read the most potent ingredients of a human bomb

Shouldn’t we be proactive by attacking the root causes of terrorism? It is clear that fighting terror groups by arresting suspect members and bombing their bases is NOT the solution if terrorism and other forms of extreme violence are to be reduced and hopefully, exterminated. Terrorism profiling has not worked. The wrong persons are caught because of their looks and while the real culprits escape. Remember the Farouk Abdulmutallab's case in the failed Detroit bombing? How come was he able to breeze through airport security unhindered? He did not look like "one of them", did he?... even after being on a US watch-list for a period.

The focus of finding solutions and policy makers should be in asking:

Why are terrorists groups like Al Shabab in Somalia, ISIS in Iraq and Syria, Boko Haram in Nigeria and Cameroon doing what they are doing? What are the motivations behind those who engage in extreme violence or terrorism? What did they lack in living simple civilian lives that they gain in joining groups that inflict pain and fear on the vulnerable and innocent?

Terrorism is a response to an action…It’s a response to problems. Terrorists are responding to those problems. So much investment has been made in fighting against those responding to those problems. We have to face those problems and solve them now!

Crime / 17 Facts About Suicide Bombers You Should Know by agentzico: 9:54am On Apr 01, 2016
Imagine a world, a society without suicide bombers or terrorists!(I think it exists only on print.) What was the world like before terrorism...suicide bombing?
In a previous article about what motivates suicide bombers to go suicide bombing, it dawned on me that we need to know to an extent what happens just before a suicide bomber presses that bomb-plunger.

1. Since the 1980s most suicide bombers who complete their mission were secular.

2. Over 95 percent of terrorist attacks have a specific strategic goal... to compel modern democracies to withdraw combat forces from territories valued by the terrorists.

3. Less than 10 percent of terrorist organizations in the world use religion as their primary cause.

4. Poverty and lack of education are not the primary root causes of suicide terrorism.

5. The more educated members of terrorist organizations tend to take up roles involving intelligence, planning, recruitment and leadership.

6. Depressions, impulsiveness and emotional instability are common traits often suffered by would-be suicide bombers.

7. Revenge seekers are easily influenced into terrorism and becoming suicide bombers due to personal grief for the loss of loved ones.

8. The would-be suicide bomber is always made to believe his ideologies (his and that of the terrorist organization) are the same.

9. Before a suicide attack occurs, a target area, persons or infrastructure must have been identified and undergone surveillance by terrorist reconnaissance personnel.

10. Suicide bombers are now trained in alternative strategy for maximum impact if obstacles alter the original plan.

11. Most twin suicide attacks are carried out by partner suicide bombers who position themselves along the direction of human traffic escaping from the first blast scene.

12. A study showed that the extent of human injury from a suicide bomb blast depends on the shrapnel (amount of nails, metallic materials etc) usually wrapped around the explosive device for maximum impact.

13. The more evenly spread a crowd is, the greater the number of injured victims and extent of damage caused by suicide bomb blasts.

14. A lie once told to some child suicide bombers about the bomb strapped around them was that the bomb will not affect them, it will only kill the unbelievers.

15. The use of women and children in suicide attacks is now seen as the new most effective tactical trend strategic change by terrorist organizations because they are more likely to escape profiling from security agents than their adult male counterparts.

16. Terrorist organizations always capture the suicide bomber's "last will" suicide video as a no going back strategy.

17. Suicide bombers otherwise known as "smart bombs" because they can change tactics at the last minute.

My thoughts On Terrorism, Politics and Sports
You know, we Africans especially Nigerians are too "spiritually conscious". Almost everything na jazz..and we need to drop that mentality if we are to move forward.
Nairaland / General / Poop Volunteers Needed For Research Work! by agentzico: 3:41am On Jul 08, 2015
It was during my Forensic Botany discussion class yesterday that this idea came up. The lecturer was lamenting how people(most especially Nigerians) get so paranoic when it involves donating their ' natural assets' for research purposes or aid.

Take blood donation for instance. Sometimes, it takes inducements of cash or little grocery items like packets of milk, pastas and soft drinks to make them donate a pint of blood. This is even after knowing that their blood donation could save lives! Precious Human lives! In fact, most times, the inducements are accompanied with abeg (Nigerian pigeon english version of 'please....').

Now, you don't expect someone with such an overly suspicious mind to willingly volunteer his faeces  for research purposes. My faeces?  For what? No matter your convincing pleas and explanations of how advantageous their donation will further the cause of science..blah blah blah...you are on your own!

The average Nigerian man will imagine that you will use his poop for ritual purposes thereby hindering his progress or tampering with his destiny. Wow!

This was what my lecturer was complaining about. You hardly can find willing persons ready to give themselves up for scientific trials or research projects. Projects that have the potentials to positively change multitude of lives for the better. We should stop this mentality!

How do you know if your refusal to agree to be part of that research will not send many to their early graves? Don't you know that taking your time answer that 2-page questionnaire can help make a comprehensive statistics that could draw government's attention to a plaguing plight?
Its high time we changed our attitudes towards things that have potentials to contribute immensely and positively on humanity. We would really be the better for it I assure you.

After the facts have been ascertained, forensic analyses are needed to be carried out to:
1. Estimate the time of death
2. Determine the manner of death(how he died)
3. Determine the cause of death( what actually killed him)
These will definetly lead to those responsible plus collaborators
4. The motive behind the death
We need all of these to successfully prosecute and convict those responsible.
There is no justification for murder whatsoever!
