olaola17: Very true, please kindly help, the same applied to me this morning i was refused because that they are not sure i will be returning to my home country based on the following ground. 1) Travel history 2) purpose of visit 3)personal asset and financial status. Please what do i do? Do i request for a gcms note for better clarity? Same reasons as mine, just that current employment situation was garnished into my own. 1) Please did you apply as a married person? 2) What are the assets you declared in your name? 3) Did you tell them in your sop that you would be willing to supply additional document if required? 4) Are u gainfully employed? 5) Going for Bsc, Msc or Phd? 6) How does your background correlate with the program? I want to know the similarity between us that caused refusal. You should apply for GCMS asap. |

JustMellow: Hello agroNACT,
The new development in securing more funding is a welcoming improvement especially towards your financial status to acquire a much focused attention to actually study without thinking to work or panicking to see through your Canadian studies.
The area of your financial status "towards your Canadian/International studies" has been settled amicably but what you now have to focus on is your financial status "towards your family composition" esp if you married. If you ain't married, please ignore this advise of setting of a savings account or that of your spouse will suffice to deposit/save/transfer funds for the well-being or welfare of your family, it doesn't have to be huge maybe 2m - above. This could likewise be explained as an emergency or backup funds for the family to support the earnings of your spouse in your absence as she is gainfully employed.
In justifying your financial status towards your family composition, you can do this:
1. Attach your spouse's employment letter, payslips, CAC(if self employed). No need to include her bank statement to show the emergency funds transferred/saved but you can sound it convincing in your SOP
2. At least you can pay for 3 terms school fees for your kids(if any) then append the receipt to your application.
3. If reside in a lease, show rent payment receipt made/extended, if possible draw out a contract extension lease signed by your land owner and you.
4. If you do business, show evidence or draw a link of your spouse been in charge in your absence.
5. Get your spouse to write a letter of approval/support for your international studies and the provisions made/set aside by you that would cater for their needs and miscellaneous expenses in your absence. Herein, your spouse can then garnish from point 1-4 for you which should also correlate with your SOP.
Also, you done well to include a cosponsor, not that you won't be able to secure your SP as a self sponsored but its a right move getting a cosponsor whether a third party or not BUT I will advise you to change the title to a Sponsor because you is still self sponsored with a closing balance of 1.2m esp if you have a spouse, let the sponsor alleviate that burden.
The sponsor now don't need to pay or transfer a dim for your application purpose, what should be done is to state the responsibility to pay for your flight itinerary and other miscellaneous expenses upon your arrival to help you settle comfortably in the LOS. You might want to consider this:
1. In the LOS, your sponsor should intuitively construct points by points expatiating why the sponsorship and how come you, and what's the share from the benefits of such sponsorship.
2. He should avoid presumptuous/unsure/indirect words like "would/could/might" and rather replace them with "will/can."
3. Your sponsor should rather make a promissory commitment like: immediately your SP is approved or prior to the approval of your SP, that he will take responsibility of your flight and travel itineraries.
4. etc
The requited document for the sponsorship are:
a. Employment letter or CAC certification if self employed
b. Bank statement and other investment certificate(if applicable)
c. Payslips, reference letter, ID
d. Affidavit of sponsorship
e. etc
d. The sponsorship letter likewise your SOP should reflect your funding/scholarship and its sufficiency for your 1st semester tuition fees and living expenses. The funding should be given in the breakdown of how it was awarded, it would make more sense that just summing it up.
In terms of home ties, if you have no or don't have previous connection or work history with the company, don't do ask for an employment letter rather strengthen your home ties to your spouse and landed property, member of a social organization etc except you can improvise a tricky method to show a previous work history with the company.
It will also be advised to construct a LOE to address your refusal reasons to support your SOP.
Any family budget made to cover them in your absence should be a year except if you is capable to stretch it to 2yrs. Also, given that you won't be applying immediately as you awaiting for your gcms notes, try to keep the account you intend to apply with very active and the closing balance shouldn't stay the same - at least top it a little up. If you were to be reapplying immediately then it wouldn't have matter.
BTW don't change any previously stated information but you can rather add to it or reduce or include certain relevant documents.
Try to avoid including too many documents but given its a reapplication, you might also want to include any relevant documents that can buttress you application especially to make it convincing and satiating to the VO.
Good luck! Wow, what a detailed advice. Thank you so much. God will reward you for your kindness. I will work on it. |

Qudkom: Congratulations on your funding. However this only takes the burden off financially. So I'll advice you don't get complacent. You still have to prove;
1. Home ties 2. What you intend to do with the program in Nigeria. 3. Tidy up your family finances before applying. 4. Work on a Co sponsor*
About your family you have ro provide proof that your wife is working or self employed and to further solidify this pay up your: 1. House rent for a year if it is rented and provide the receipt. 2. If you have kids pay their school fees for a year and provide receipts 3. Fund a savings account about 1.5-2mill and claim it to be an emergency fund account should incase something pops up in your absence.
You also need to draft a compelling LOE to explain previous denial. Like I said earlier don't get complacent. Thank you so much for these. You are blessed |

URGENT! HELLO GOOD PEOPLE PLEASE ADVICE ME
I was recently refused (2 years Study Permit) based on Purpose of Visit, Travel history, Current employment situation, and Personal asset and Financial situation for fall term.
I applied earlier (without a co-sponsor) with just 1.2M NAIRA in my personal account (For flight) cus i got full funding of $23,400. Yesterday i won another funding, Saskatchewan Government scholarship of $16000.
The person i got as third party co-sponsor (If the "co" is ok in my case) just called me this morning that i should send him all what i need from him!
Please in order to keep it tight and simple this time...
1) How much is the "minimum" reasonable amount i should ask him to state to co-sponsor me, given the scholarship of $23400 + $16,000 i won. And his pledge should be toward what? (Flight, Tuition, Living expenses?).
2) Apart from the letter of sponsorship, what other less complicated documents should i ask him to send? He has a company and he is not someone i can demand too much from.
3) And please, is it ok if i get letter of future employment upon return from a company with official role similar to my MSc degree 4) How can i proof my wife will be fine financially when i leave her in Nigeria for two years?
I want to get things on ground while i await the GCMS note.
Thanks.

JustMellow: Its really hard pleasing these VOs and no one can absolutely predict are they scrutinize applications. Your application seems good but in the absence of your gcms notes to really ascertain the authentic facts, i will point fingers at the Purpose of Visit as the principal reason and your current employment situation which dragged your financial status into the fold.
Getting a full funding/scholarship isn't a guarantee for a straight approval as you may baffle why. An applicant's financial capability/status and financial sufficiency might sound similar but relatively different to an extent. In using your case to explain this: Financial Capability/status is based on the applicant's personal/sponsor's/cosponsor's available funds whilst Financial Sufficiency is based on the applicant's funding/scholarship which you were able to satisfy one and didn't in the other.
The VOs believe so much in a ready/available/liquid fund readily accessible than a promissory paper of intent/agreement even if it would be later available in the near future. Mostly, during eligibility review, these VOs make an applicant's funds part of their scrutiny in this stage.
Now, let's assume to think like a VO: what if your DLI spontaneously send in a sincere letter/email of apology that they won't be able to or continue to fund an applicant at this stage given to some unprecedented/unforeseen reaaon(s) and they are cancelling the scholarship/funding, were will such applicant now fall back to? this would throw the applicant into a state of critical confusion and into an immediate stance of depression, making such applicant a liability to the Canadian government. To what is obvious, the VO might actually be averting this, and wanting to see at least a financial sufficiency from the side of the applicant even if no commitment is done given the presence of the scholarship/funding.
Be as it may, the deeds has been done, let's look to the future which is very bright. My advise is:
1. Get a sponsor that has a good convincing closing balance, and get the sponsor to write LOS with how much to be pledged for your Canadian studies.(This is just for formality given the presence of your full funding and you don't need the sponsor to pay a dime).
Let the sponsor also pledge to pay for your flight itinerary.
2. Include your personal account of 1.2m which this time, it will be met for sundry/miscellaneous expenses. Do well to express it out in your SOP.
3. Too many unnecessary documents, trim it down a bit and in place of work experience, include your NYSC PPA letter - do well to also fill it in the IMM form. In this form, in the place of work experience, fill in your academic institutions attended till NYSC with dates and certificates as proof.
4. Rework your SOP, and any vital points and claimed assertions should be backed with proper evidence.
5. You can use your family property as an inherited property of yours, then use your father's date certificate to relate the facts of such inheritance. you can get a lawyer to prepare the documents. Your wife should be more in better position than extended family that can compel you return. This should be your home ties but you can build more on it.
6. Good luck! Wow! I am wiser. Thank you so much, i really appreciate this. your points have been noted. God will bless and favor you. |

justwise: Your exit from this section will be quicker than you can imagined Dear @justwise and @Schonebaby, I really understand your concern, and you are really not to be blamed, we really cannot easily trust one another or think that our neighbour has good intentions because of the scar that has been engraved inadvertently on our memories due to bad governance and which brought serious economic hiccups. As a result, the international communities view us under the lens of enormous doubt, unlike the times of Afe Babalola, Bennet Omalu, Chimamanda, Babalola Borisade (Late), Akinwumi Adesina etc. when good academic intentions and ambition could easily get you a Visa as a genuine student without the need to come from a Bill-gate-like Nigerian background. However, I have had personal chat and phone call with the Moniker (@Schonebaby) and the said Moniker did not ask me for anything, neither has the person mentioned an agent or trying to make business transaction out of my predicament. It seems like I caught the Moniker's attention simply because we are of the same discipline, though with a level of graduate degree higher than mine. It is on the strength of the above that i want to clarify the the Moniker (@Schonebaby) is a genuine person, with good intention to assist based on related experience with same spirit as that of a good Nairalander. I thank you @Schonebaby and @justwise for interest in my case. Nigeria must work and we must keep contributing to her progress without relenting. Sincerely, AgroNACT. |

sillysassysally: I have a friend whose situation was quite similar to yours. She got full funding for an MSc and her passport was semi-virgin (lol) the only time she had ever traveled out was to the UK when she was very little (like 4 years old). She was rejected on the basis of purpose of visit, travel history, personal asset (something very similar to yours). The second time she applied, she used consultants (Maple Education). Some of the things that i know she did differently includes: 1. Deferred her admission as she was already short on time 2. Wrote a banging SOP - I can send you the template she used 3. Even though she had full funding, she still used a sponsor (her dad) whose SOA could cover her cost of education
Like it has already been said, i would advise you to order your GCMS notes immediately as it'll give you more perspective to what the VO's line of thoughts are regarding your particular application. When you have done all your hard work, don't forget that "faith begins where facts and figures ends" - Omofar. I pray that what God has started (getting admission and full funding) would be perfected for you.

What will your wife live on? That might be the question the vo couldn't figure out and concluded that you are not a genuine student. PS.my opinion. Thanks so much. Opinion noted |

I hope u know if you leave before finishing NYSC, you have to do some underground runs for someone to complete it on ur behalf. That compulsory NYSC info is absolutely not necessary. However, I totally doubt that it was the reason for your refusal. They have about five major reasons for denial :funds, purpose of visit, travel history, home tie (indicating ability to come back after validity expires) and study gap +career progression. employment Is not particularly a deal breaker. You're matured and married. 1.2 million in your account is not reasonable in the eyes of the VO that handled your application regardless of the funding. Bracha: Everything I'll be writing here is my opinion from the little knowledge I have.
The money in your account is small; if they refused you based on funds, then your funds are low. Increase that amount or get a co-sponsor who would show their willingness to support you by either paying a part of your tuition or paying the money earmarked for the sponsorship. I'd advise they pay a part of your tuition. Even if they do pay a part of your tuition, you need more money in that your account.
I'd have said you should wait till after your NYSC to reapply but I suspect you're in a hurry because of that mouthwatering Graduate Assistantship you have there, so I'll say you should write a banging SOP addressing the rest; because of the NYSC and the employability reasons, I'll advise you remove that unemployed and put your NYSC place of employment.
I don't see the relevance of Nos. 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21. The documents that concern your extended family aren't relevant in my opinion. Your wife is the only family you need to prove as a home tie, and if you have children that'd even be better. Unless you're the one taking care of your mom, then you can explain that in your SOP/LOE.
The purchase agreement is for a family land, not a personal one, so why will that bring you back home? I'd have used the family land as a supporting document for funds (this is for online application) while in my SOP I'll write why that decision was made, going as far as to say that the land can be sold if I get short on money.
Work on your home ties please. Show how that degree will work for you here in Nigeria.
Please remember that these are my opinion. Someone else may have a contrary view. I wrote all the above based on my limited knowledge of the application process.
Godspeed. Thanks so much for taking your time to type me your opinion. Please, does it mean that there is no difference between "Insufficient fund" and "personal asset and financial status" refusal reasons? The fund i got is an award, to be paid when i resume. Its not something i will do Assistantship for before i get. The current place of employment i stated in my application is NYSC and i explained its a compulsory volunteer service for graduates who intend to work in Nigeria after graduation. I have taken note of the irrelevant documents i need to remove. Your opinion is highly appreciated! God bless you. |

sillysassysally: How is NYSC a red flag? i don't agree with this.
For me, I think he failed to convince the VO on two key things. 1. Purpose of visit - how well did he address this in his SOA 2. Intention to return to home country after studies - the OP is 31 and has no travel history. Also, how well did he show potential job prospects upon his return to Nigeria?
These are the things that come to my mind. Of course, GCMS notes would help put things into perspective. Thanks so much. I think i tried my best to explain the purpose of visit.
