Agriculture / How Youths Can Create Wealth & Income Trading Local Food Commodities. by agronewsng(m): 12:28pm On Aug 19, 2016
Nigerians spend as much as N25.2bn on feeding themselves on a daily basis according to a recent report released by NOI Polls.

The report stated that about 80% of Nigerians which is about 140 million of the nation’s population of 175 million spend at least $1 which is about N160 on food daily. This amounts to N22.4bn while the remaining 35 million people spend an average of half a dollar which is approximately N80 amounting to N2.8bn per day making a total average daily food spend of N25.2bn by the country’s general population.

Going by these figures, all the food consumed in the country in one year sums up to about N9.2tn, of which 14% of this which amounts to about N1.3tn is imported. This is an opportunity for massive investment for investors who are expected to seize the opportunities in food businesses.

The average Nigerian spends about 72.97% of his or her earnings on food

Out of this figure, more than 70% is expended daily on local food stuffs and commodities.

Among the most prominent of the local food stuffs and commodities daily consumed by Nigerians from all strata, age and tribe include;

Rice
Beans
Egusi
Ogbono
Sea foods (Cray Fish, Dry Fish, Stock Fish, Smoked Fish)
Palm Oil
Vegetable Oil
Vegetables
Yam
Garri
Tomatoes
Onions
Pepper
Plantain
Semovita
Wheat
Local Soup and Stew Condiments (Cut Across Different Tribes in Nigeria)
Local Vegetables (Oha, Bitter leaf, Ewedu leaf, Ugu, etc)

Most of these food stuffs and commodities are largely locally sourced and constitute more than 80% of the essential ingredients and condiments needed to make the average Nigerian day to day meals and dishes.

Most of these local food stuffs and commodities are largely purchased by Nigerians daily from the conventional traditional open air markets and neighbourhood stores.

A visit to any of these markets, readily found in neighbourhoods and within every estate will bring you to the shocking reality of the irresistible and helpless day to day rush by Nigerians from all classes and life strata (Mothers, working class, Men, Children etc) to lay their hands on one local food stuff or the other.

However, a close observation among the different food commodities vendors and local food stuffs shop owners would most clearly reveal to you that more than 95% of these traders and shop owners are actually aged and elderly women and in fewer cases men in their late 40s and early 50s.

As I chronicle the activities, trading experience, abundant wealth creation and income opportunities in these markets and commodities, the key thoughts and questions that keep occupying my mind daily are;

Why are the youths missing in the trading action?

Are the youths ignorant of the wealth and income potentials of these commodities and their trading?

Garden egg or Eggplant is an economic flowering plant. Garden eggs are found throughout Nigeria and cultivated domestically.

Garden egg is a highly valued delicacy in Nigerian society such that its importance cannot be overemphasized to consumers and farmers alike.
It represents fertility and blessing that why it’s common to find it served during wedding ceremonies in some communities.

The garden eggplant apart from being a source of vegetable also has numerous health benefits which are essential for the overall development of the human body. Its acceptability cuts across religious, tribal, cultural and ethnic groups in Nigeria, hence the wide usage of the garden eggplant.

Agriculture / How Snail Farming Can Thrive In Nigeria –expert. by agronewsng(m): 10:33am On Jul 21, 2016
Snail farmers in Nigeria should switch from their old ways and rear other species that are high in demand outside the country, Prince Adewole Adeyanju, an expert has advised.

Prince Adeyanju, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Wolegate Global Resources Limited, noted that Nigeria’s climate is very favourable to breed snail.
He noted that the old method of breeding snail, the species and time spent to recoup money invested in the business had made snail farming unattractive in the country.

Speaking with newsmen ahead of a one-day seminar on new techniques in snail breeding scheduled to take place in Lagos, Prince Adeyanju said, currently snail breeding did not attract much investors because of the duration it took to realise money invested in the business.

He said the duration of rearing snail in the country was 25 months, and that was why banks were not encouraged to give loan to snail breeders.

“Snail breeding is one investment that can yield quick gains if the farmer understands the modern techniques and type of species that are in high demand in Europe, USA and other developed countries,” he said.

Prince Adeyanju also said the snail species that Nigerian snail farmers were known for were not in demand overseas because the flesh of these snails was too hard.

He said, “Most snail farmers do not know this fact. It is high time we let them know this. They need to use modern techniques of snail farming and breed preferred species to earn dollars from overseas.

“This is the reason behind the one-day seminar on new method of snail breeding, to galvanise the idea and supply the technology, as applied to Nigeria,” he said.

He stressed that the preferred snail specie was in high demand and that it took nine months to rear and for recouping of investment to start, adding that it had high return on investment.

The snail farmer said the Helixaspersa Mulla specie grown in a structural ‘curtain method’ which gave the snail the right environment to breed well, was the best, adding that the method had a zero risk level.

Agriculture / Cashew Cultivation Tips. by agronewsng(m): 10:23am On Jul 21, 2016
CASHEW VARIETIES

There are three main varieties which are Brazilian cashew, Chinese cashew and Indian cashew. Brazilian cashew is mostly grown in Nigeria.

LAND PREPARATION AND PLANTING

Selection of planting material is most important in cashew cultivation. Cashew is highly cross pollinated and vegetative propagation is mainly recommended on commercial scale to produce true to type planting materials.

The field should first be cleared off its vegetation, after which it should be ploughed and harrowed. The nuts can be sowed 3 – 4 per hole or raised in nursery and transplanted in the field. After the establishment, the plants are thinned to one healthy and vigorous plant per stand.

Cashew can be propagated by seedlings, air layers and softwood grafts. Field establishment of air layers has been found to be poor. Hence softwood grafts, which give a high rate of establishment and early flowering, are recommended for planting
