Nigeria is expected to record increasing boast to its cashew nut production in coming years due to renewed focus by government and increasing demand for the commodity across developed countries and Asia.

The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Segun Awolowo stated this on Wednesday, at a workshop on cashew processing and Market Information Systems in Lagos.

The workshop which was organized by the African Cashew Alliance (ACA), USAID West Africa Trade and Investment Hub (WATIHUB) and USAID|Nigeria Expanded Trade and Transport (NEXTT) Project, unveiled the Cashew Marketing Information System (MIS) that was developed by ACA to reflect reference pricing for cashew traders and market analysts. Data gathered on the MIS can be sourced online, SMS, email or voice platforms with provision for the five major Nigerian languages.

On July 14, 2016, a wide range of cashew industry stakeholders and financial market actors will gather together in Lagos, Nigeria for the Access to Finance in the Cashew Value Chain Workshop. Initiated by the African Cashew Alliance (ACA) and supported by the USAID Nigeria Expanded Trade and Transport Project (NEXTT) and the USAID West Africa Trade and Investment Hub (WATIH), the workshop seeks to promote financial inclusion for cashew sector actors.

The one day event brings together USAID WATIH specialists, cashew market experts, banks and financial institutions, and financial advisors to discuss current obstacles and potential pathways to increased access to finance in the cashew value chain. In particular, the program will focus on methods for maximizing the potential of the Nigerian cashew sector to attract investment and ensure competitiveness.

As part of ACA’s ongoing mission to promote the global competitiveness of the African cashew value chain, the workshop was conceptualized as a means to link the cashew sector to financial institutions and increase the bankability of cashew processors.

The workshop comes at a moment when the industry is ripe for change. By ensuring that processers have access to the vital credit and working capital necessary to purchase raw cashew nuts (RCN), ACA is fostering the long-term viability of the African cashew processing industry.

Presentations from leading Nigerian trade experts; panel discussions between investment professionals; and personalized ‘Business-to-Business’ meetings with West Africa Trade Hub financial advisors, banks, and financial institutions will significantly enhance participant’s technical and strategic knowledge on accessing the financial opportunities for investment in the cashew value chain.

With support from USAID WATIH, ACA has worked closely with NEXTT, the National Cashew Association of Nigeria (NCAN), Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and other Nigerian partners to coordinate this event. ACA expects a successful and productive workshop with all of the esteemed partners, resource persons, and participants who have contributed to make this event possible.

The workshop will be held following the ACA Cashew Business Management & Market Information Systems workshop, also held in Lagos, on July 12-13th. This ongoing training for processors and market information specialists – hosted by ACA, with support from USAID WATIH – focuses on increasing capacity in the West African cashew value chain.

Capacity building, training and technical assistance on global industry practices, business management, quality and food safety regulations, environmental protection, market information and trends seek to further boost the competitiveness of African cashew sector actors.

ACA will continue its work in promoting and strengthening the African cashew industry during its 2016 World Cashew Festival & Expo in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau.

From September 19-22, 2016, hundreds of cashew industry stakeholders will gather to discuss the industry’s most pressing challenges and opportunities. AfDB Votes $175m For Agric Transformation Of N/West Nigeria

As instrument for consolidating its investments in the Nigerian agriculture sector, the African Development Bank (AfDB) has set aside the sum of $175 million for its Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Programme (ATASP-I) in Nigeria’s north-western states.

The country director, AfDB, Dr Ousmane Dore, made this disclosure at a meeting with the leadership of the North West region at the Kaduna State Government House.

Dore disclosed that the meeting reviewed the bank’s agriculture development strategy for the region, and also its ongoing and upcoming interventions in agriculture in Nigeria as they relate to the seven North West states.

Innovation Key To Success in Agriculture

Agriculture is the current rave in Nigeria. Just like in yesteryears when entrepreneurship became a fad because people could not readily get white collar employment; the shocking slide in oil revenues and the uncertainties it has meted on government contractors, suppliers, traders and the services industry now compels many to venture into agricultural production; with government sophistry leading the pack.

However, it is important to note that agriculture is not a new idea; it has always been with us. That was practically all our forefathers did. In the sixties, it was a significant contributor to income from exports and it is interesting to note that Nigeria is still profiled as an agrarian country with over 60 per cent of its people engaged in agriculture.

Nigeria’s Shea Butter Production Receives EU Support

Nigeria’s shea butter production has received the support of the European Union.

A statement from the Standards Organisation of Nigeria indicated that the European Union through its expert on Technical Barriers to Trade, African Caribbean and Pacific countries’ programme, had started plans to equip Nigerian women with the requisite skills and support to boost shea butter production.

According to the organisation, Nigerian agricultural and allied products now have a major boost in regional and international markets following a recent harmonisation of standards exercise carried out by the Africa Regional Organisation for Standardisation.

Bio-Fortified Cotton Can Revamp Moribond Textile Industries In Nigeria – Biosafety Agency

The National Biotechnology Development Agency said in Abuja on Wednesday that genetically modified cotton has the potential to revamp the country’s moribund textile industries.

The Director-General of the agency, Prof. Lucy Ogbadu, said this at a sensitisation workshop on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs), organised by the National Biosafety Management Agency (NBMA) for stakeholders.

She expressed regret that the textile industry, which was the second largest employer of labour in the 1960s, had gone moribund due to susceptible insect attacks on cotton plants.
