A former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has called for synergy among the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary if the country must witness development. He made the call during a courtesy call by members of the Niger State House of Assembly at his Uphill residence on Thursday in Minna. The former leader opined that no state or country can develop in atmosphere of rancour between all arms of government, adding that a cordial relationship between them serves as the fulcrum that drives development. He commended the State Assembly for ensuring that no discontent brew between it and the executive arm in the state, saying the members have being leaving up to the expectations of the people. He noted that the legislators have been up and doing and have taking their duties seriously. “We have heard of states having a lack of synergy between the arms of government but in Niger state, that should not be your lot. Keep a good working relationship between the legislature, the executive and the judiciary. You have been doing that and I want you to keep it up,” he said. He urged them to initiate people-oriented programmes and projects and carry the people along. “You are closer to the people. It is your responsibility to know what the people need and carry them along all the time. Do not leave them outside your projects and programmes,” he said. Earlier, the Speaker of the Niger state House of Assembly, Honourable Abdullahi Bawa Wuse said they visited the elder statesman to seek his blessings and advice on how to pilot the affairs of the Assembly effectively. He acknowledged the leadership role Babangida had played outside his tenure as the President of Nigeria saying his fatherly role has ensured that Nigeria remains indivisible. “We are here to get the blessing of our father; this is because we know your concern and commitment to the development of this state and Nigeria. “Outside office, you have done so much more than you did while in office. Your role as a father in the nation has ensured that Nigeria remains indivisible,” he said. Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/ibb-calls-for-synergy-among-all-arms-of-government.html

President of the African Women Entrepreneur-ship Programme (AWEP), Mrs Angela Ajala, has said the association will soon launch a directory for women in export business. Ajala, who spoke at the sidelines of the MSMEs Day, recently, said the directory was to make it easy to reach women entrepreneurs. “We are bringing out a directory for women that are in export. Many times, people want to buy things from Nigeria but they don’t know where to go. Whether ginger, turmeric or garri, they don’t know where to go. The National Directory for Women in Export is going to solve that problem. “It will be placed in all embassies, commercial areas and relevant agencies like SMEDAN, NEPC, NEXIM, so our women can begin to get the visibility they need to get their products out there,” she said. Ajala said the directory, which will be launched at the Annual General Meeting of AWEP coming up next month, will have about 500 women and would be a one-stop shop for information of women into export business. The AWEP president also urged women to formalize their businesses so as to get visibility. “Women should begin to formalise their businesses to give them the visibility they need. Their businesses should be structured and registered with CAC. They want to see your management profile and audited account. All the things that are needed to give you proper structure and corporate governance should be in place,” Ajala said. Tech firm Andela, has announced that it will layoff over 250 junior engineers across Uganda, and Nigeria while Kenya may see 170 persons laid off before 2020. Jeremy Johnson, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Andela, made this known Tuesday in a statement titled “The Future of Andela”. He said “We will be letting go of approximately 250 Andelans in Nigeria and Uganda, with an additional 170 potentially impacted in Kenya, who we don’t believe we’ll be able to find meaningful work for over the next year”. Jeremy said that they are closing the ‘D0 program’ in Nigeria, Kenya, and Uganda. He explained that the layoff was because they couldn’t place the junior engineers. He said “We now have significantly more junior talent than we are able to place. Just as important, those junior engineers want, and deserve, authentic work experience that we are not able to provide. As a result, we’ve come to the conclusion that Andela’s next phase of growth requires a strategic shift in how we think about talent”. The layoffs come as the company announced its plan to hire another 700 experienced engineers by the end of 2020 in order to keep up with demand from its partners. President Muhammadu Buhari has charged the West African leaders to stamp out terrorism in the sub-region at this point in time. President Buhari gave the charge in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, in his speech at the Extraordinary Summit of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government on Counter-Terrorism. Buhari joined other ECOWAS leaders for the special one-day Summit, which was also attended by leaders of Chad and Mauritania. The president, who called on ECOWAS leaders not to allow terrorist groups destabilise the region, said terrorism had become a major security threat across the globe. “Our region has made commendable progress in the realization of its regional integration and we must not allow terrorist groups to destabilize our Community and undermine the aspirations of our people for a safe, secure and prosperous environment. “It is, therefore, our collective responsibility not to let up but to win the fight against terrorism and stamp out the scourge from our region,” Buhari also said. He warned, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media Media and Publicity Femi Adesina, that the activities of terrorist groups constituted a grave danger to peace and security in West Africa, the wider Sahel and the global community. Speaking on the experience of Nigeria in fighting the scourge, the president said: “As a major victim of Boko Haram terrorist activities, Nigeria has remained resolute in efforts to combat and eradicate them in all their forms and manifestations. “Our counter-terrorism strategy, which includes prevention, prosecution and reconstruction is also in full compliance with the Yamoussoukro counter-terrorism strategy adopted by ECOWAS Member States. “In combating terrorism and addressing the resultant humanitarian crisis, through regional and international collaboration, ECOWAS, as a Regional Economic Cooperation, would need in partnership with the African Union, to galvanise international support and solidarity to combat and defeat this menace in our region.” Buhari, who used the occasion to brief the regional leaders on the situation in the Lake Chad Basin and the operations of the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), described as tragic, the situation in Lake Chad Basin, historically a bastion of rich culture and civilization, an area abundant in natural resources providing livelihoods to tens of millions of people. He said the area had become an abode for terrorist groups and extremists whose primitive intent was wanton destruction of lives of innocent citizens and property as well as public infrastructure. The president said the achievements recorded so far by MNJTF in their operations remained an exemplary model of regional collaboration.
