President Muhammadu Buhari has threatened to take serious action against Nigerians spreading hate speech on social media. Buhari made this known while delivering his speech on the occasion of Nigeria’s 59th Independence celebration Tuesday morning. He noted that: “Our attention is increasingly being focused on cyber-crimes and the abuse of technology through hate speech and other divisive material being propagated on social media. “Whilst we uphold the Constitutional rights of our people to freedom of expression and association, where the purported exercise of these rights infringes on the rights of other citizens or threatens to undermine our National Security, we will take firm and decisive action.” He therefore, called for all to exercise restraint, tolerance and mutual respect in airing their grievances and frustrations. “Whilst the ongoing national discourse on various political and religious issues is healthy and welcome, we must not forget the lessons of our past – lessons that are most relevant on a day such as this. “The path of hatred and distrust only leads to hostility and destruction. I believe that the vast majority of Nigerians would rather tread the path of peace and prosperity, as we continue to uphold and cherish our unity,” the President stressed. President Muhammadu Buhari this morning urged Nigerians to join hands with the present administration to entrench good governance, foster inclusive economic development, as well as defend and protect the nation from those working against its unity. In a nationwide broadcast to mark the 59th Independence Anniversary of the country, he said Nigeria will emerge “stronger from its present challenges and more resilient than ever.” The president, who called for all to exercise restraint, tolerance and mutual respect in airing their grievances and frustrations, described the ongoing national discourse on various political and religious issues as “healthy and welcome.” According to him, “Our attention is increasingly being focused on cyber-crimes and the abuse of technology through hate speech and other divisive material being propagated on social media. “Whilst we uphold the constitutional rights of our people to freedom of expression and association, where the purported exercise of these rights infringe on the rights of other citizens or threaten to undermine our national security, we will take firm and decisive action,” he said. The president added that, “The path of hatred and distrust only leads to hostility and destruction. I believe that the vast majority of Nigerians would rather tread the path of peace and prosperity, as we continue to uphold and cherish our unity.” Buhari said the implementation of the 2019 capital budget, which was only approved in June, would be accelerated to ensure that critical priority projects were completed or substantially addressed. “The Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning has been directed to release N600 billion for capital expenditure in the next 3 months,” he said. He expressed commitment to optimizing the revenues generated from the oil and gas sector as the government pushed to diversify the economy. The president said while working with the legislature, the Petroleum Industry Bill and amendments to the Deep Offshore Act and Inland Basin Production Sharing Contracts Act, would soon be passed into law to ensure government obtained a fair share of oil revenues, whilst encouraging private sector investment. The president, who said the vulnerable would not bear the brunt of policy adjustments, explained the reasons behind the disbandment of Economic Management Team led by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and replaced with Economic Advisory Council (EAC). “I recently constituted an Economic Advisory Council to advise me on inclusive and sustainable macroeconomic, fiscal and monetary policies. This independent body will work with relevant Cabinet members and the heads of key monetary, fiscal and trade agencies to ensure we remain on track as we strive for collective prosperity. However, we are also committed to ensure that the inconvenience associated with any painful policy adjustments, is moderated, such that the poor and the vulnerable, who are most at risk, do not bear the brunt.” Buhari said the Federal Ministry of Justice is working with the US Department of Justice to conclude a Memorandum of Understanding to expedite the repatriation of the US$300 million recently identified as part of the Abacha money-laundering case. He said the P & ID “arbitral award” had underscored the manner in which significant economic damage had been caused by the past activities of a few corrupt and unpatriotic Nigerians. “Our efforts to improve the power sector will complement other infrastructure investment projects under the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund, which is investing in the Mambilla Power Plant project, as well as key economic road infrastructure such as the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Second Niger Bridge and Abuja-Kano Expressway. The first set of these projects remain on track to be completed by 2022,” he said. Atiku, in a statement yesterday, said, “All is not well when Nigeria is now officially the world headquarters for extreme poverty and out of school children, yet the cost of maintaining those in government continues to grow, while the needs of the governed are not being met. “And certainly, all is not well when the media cannot freely express itself without the fear that those who wield the big stick would use it on them for saying things as they are,” he said. As Nigeria celebrate its 59th Independence anniversary, the President, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Dr. Samson Ayokunle, has tasked all Nigerians to see the task of nation building as a collective responsibility. In his anniversary message released on Monday in Abuja and signed by his spokesman, Pastor Adebayo Oladeji, he said he was among the people that believe that Nigeria can rise above her challenges and be a great nation in the world. According to him, it is true that Nigeria today is confronted with many challenges but with the cooperation of all, both the leaders and the led, the nation can rise above the challenges and be the great nation God designed it to be. “The situation of Jericho we have just read will be adopted to underscore the fact that no matter the level of barrenness or bitterness of life the citizens are experiencing now in our nation, a better tomorrow is coming. “But that is not what faith alone would do but concerted effort of all of us, through love for one another, development of a new heart of Godliness rather than criminality in various forms, impeccable leadership that comes out of patriotism and selflessness, responsible followership and authentic spirituality,” he said. He said that Nigeria is a nation that is greatly endowed by God with human and material resources. He also listed the problem with Nigeria as ethnicity, religion, corruption and poor welfare provision, lack of social amenities and infrastructures needed to encourage business activities; and mass unemployment which must be collectively addressed to find a lasting solution. He said that the problem in Nigeria is more than what political situation alone can solve, and that all must be involved, both the led and the leaders. “Let us put behind us all the divisions because God has decided to tie our destiny together in the nation called Nigeria. We need to accept that reality and decide to embrace one another. “We must work hard to make life better for our brothers and sisters. The time is now for Nigeria to rise as a nation through the collective effort of all of us,” he said. The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has called on Nigerians to unite and pray for the country as it marks her 59th Independence Day anniversary. In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Lanre Lasisi, Gbajabiamila said Nigeria has come a long way as an indivisible entity every citizen must work to protect. He also enjoined Nigerians to pray for the country and its leaders for the entrenchment of good governance and wellbeing of the people. He said prayers and unity of purpose will help the country remain one and tasked Nigerians to continue working hard to realise the mission and vision of the country’s founding fathers. “As we mark our country’s 59th Independence Anniversary, we must remain steadfast, united and prayerful for our country to remain one and overcome her challenges. “It is also incumbent on us all as citizens to pray for our leaders so that God Almighty will continue to guide them aright. Let’s all work together as one people. “In the face of some of the challenges confronting us as a country, we have no choice but to work hard to overcome them. As leaders, we are already doing that. But we need the support of the citizens to achieve that,” the Speaker said. Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/independence-day-gbajabiamila-urges-nigerians-to-unite-pray-for-country.html
