President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday unveiled a new power target for the country, following the signing of an electricity road map agreement between the Federal Government and German-based Siemens. The signing of the implementation agreement was held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. The Director General of the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE), Dr. Alex Okoh signed on behalf of the federal government and the Chief Executive Officer of the Siemens, Mr. Joe Kaeser signed for the firm. The deal, our correspondent reports, was the product of a meeting President Buhari held with German Chancellor, Angela Merkel on August 31, 2018. Speaking after the signing, the president said the government’s goal was to deliver electricity to Nigerian businesses and homes. The president said: “My challenge to Siemens, our partner investors in the Distribution Companies, the Transmission Company of Nigeria and the Electricity Regulator is to work hard to achieve 7,000 megawatts of reliable power supply by 2021 and 11,000 megawatts by 2023 – in phases 1 and 2 respectively. “After these transmission and distribution system bottlenecks have been fixed, we will seek – in the third and final phase – to drive generation capacity and overall grid capacity to 25,000 megawatts.” He said with the strong commitment to the development of Mambilla Hydroelectric and the various solar projects under development across the country, the long-term power generation capacity will ensure adequate energy mix and sustainability in the appropriate balance between urban and rural electrification. “Our intention is to ensure that our cooperation is structured under a Government-to-Government framework. No middlemen will be involved, so that we can achieve value for money for Nigerians. We also insist that all products be manufactured to high quality German and European standards and competitively priced. “It is our hope that as the power situation improves, we will improve investor confidence, create jobs, reduce the cost of doing business and encourage more economic growth in Nigeria,” he said. The president said “Previous governments have explored state funded solutions through the ill-prepared National Independent Power Projects (NIPP). They also explored the installation of large emergency power projects. There was also the partial privatization of the power generation and distribution sectors. “These various interventions to solving the electricity problem have yielded an imbalance between the amount of power generated and the amount available for consumers.” He said despite over 13,000 megawatts of power generation capacity, only an average of 4,000 megawatts reach consumers. “Now, we have an excellent opportunity to address this challenge. This government’s priority was to stabilise the power generation and gas supply sector through the Payment Assurance Facility, which led to a peak power supply of 5,222 MW. Nonetheless, the constraints remained at the transmission and distribution systems.” In an interview after the signing of the pact, the CEO of Siemens, said the partnership will enable the country enhance its power delivery capacity significantly. He said the power target will lead the country to the next industrial phase. Also speaking to newsmen, the Director General of BPE described Siemens as a credible partner. “If you look at the amount of losses that is being experienced in the entire power sector, they are huge. “That is why we welcome this intervention and we believe that within the timelines that have been directed by Mr. President, we will be able to significantly improve power supply in the country,” he said. The All Progressives Congress (APC) says political actions of some members of houses of assembly in Bauchi State and Edo in the inauguration of the assemblies are undemocratic. APC National Publicity Secretary Lanre Issa-Onilu said the party would never allow such developments again and the impunity the actors enjoyed. He spoke to journalists in Abuja on Sunday night, noting that “it is a shame that APC controlled state would be involved in such acts with impunity. “I want to refocus the public through the media on what the issues are and there is one common issue for both Bauchi State and Edo — the improper inauguration of the houses of assembly. “In Bauchi with 31 members of House of Assembly, no fewer than 11 members convened and purportedly inaugurated the House of Assembly; that is taking us back. “In Edo, you have a situation where you have nine members, some of them in knickers, who convened and claimed to have inaugurated the House of Assembly’’. He noted that APC ought to have dealt with issues in Bauchi State and Edo all together if not that Bauchi State is controlled by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The story with the above title, which appeared in the Daily Trust of Friday, July 19, 2019, made an interesting reading. Before the story, Nigerians were only talking about what was happening at the centre, when state governors, who are closer to the people than the president, are getting away with so many things. We must remember that what the nation loses by the president’s delay in forming his team is, to a large extent, what the states are losing because of the governors’ poor mimicry of the president. I agree completely with what Dr. Chile Daniel Ngusha, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication, said. It is unfortunate that elected officials, who spend days campaigning to get into office, cannot form a team that they can work with, long after taking the oath of office. We certainly need a law in this country that will compel the president and governors to have a cabinet within a certain period. The Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, said the nation had spent about N2 trillion on constituency projects without commensurate development at the grassroots. Daily Trust reports that the ICPC recently started the first phase of tracking of constituency projects in 12 states of the federation in order to ensure quality projects delivery to constituents by their elected representatives. The states are Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Kogi, Sokoto and Kano. Others are Imo, Enugu, Lagos, Osun, Akwa Ibom and Edo, with at least five projects awarded between 2016 and 2018 in each of the states. The commission’s spokesperson, Mrs Rasheedat Okoduwa, in a statement in Abuja yesterday quoted the chairman as saying it at the induction of newly-qualified members of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors in Abuja. Owasanoye, while making emphasis on the ongoing tracking of constituency projects by the commission in 12 states, said that the exercise was not to witch-hunt anyone. He said that tracking the projects was an important assignment for ICPC as the nation had spent about N2 trillion on the funding since 2000 without commensurate impact at the grassroots. Owasanoye, however, said that ICPC would not hesitate to prosecute any contractor that has failed to deliver on the projects, including accomplices. The chairman said that ICPC commenced the Constituency Projects Tracking Group (CPTG) initiative to ensure proper implementation of funded projects at the various constituencies across the nation. He further said that the initiative was already yielding positive results as some contractors had gone back to site to complete unfinished projects. He, however, noted that the commission was collaborating with the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) in the on-going exercise. Daily Trust reports that an assessment visit to Bauchi State by the ICPC recently uncovered how political feud between former Bauchi State Governor Mohammed Abubakar and former Speaker of the House of Representatives Yakubu Dogara stalled the use of completed health centres in Dass, Tafawa Balewa and Bogoro, which formed the constituency of the former Number 4 citizen. At one of the health centres, located at Marti Bakin Kogi and Yaban Kufai community in Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area, the people said the centre, which was completed since 2016, has remained under lock and key with grass taking over the compound. They blamed the closure on the political disagreement between the former governor and the former speaker. Also recently, the ICPC announced that it had recovered some equipment worth millions of Nigeria meant for a cottage hospital in Essien Udim Local Government of Akwa Ibom State, under the constituency project. Some of the recovered equipment included two 15 KVA generators, a dialysis machine and infant incubators. The Akwa Ibom State ICPC Commissioner, Mr Shola Shodipo, who led journalists to evacuate the equipment from a private home and deliver them to the hospital, said the commission discovered that the items were meant to be delivered to the hospital in March last year. “In the course of our assignment, we discovered that three dialysis machines and other items for the Ukana Cottage Hospital were not delivered. We found only one in a private place, which was not delivered or installed in the hospital. “The items were found in that building that we went to. These machines and other equipment were meant to be delivered since 2018. We have taken the items to the appropriate location. They are supposed to help the community in health care delivery,” Shodipo told journalists. Daily Trust reports that controversy has continued to dog the constituency projects, with allegations that members of the National Assembly have turned themselves to ‘contractors’ rather than focusing on their business of lawmaking. It is also alleged that in the past that lawmakers were allowed to nominate companies, which they had interest on, to execute various projects in their constituencies. But the lawmakers see the idea as a legitimate attempt to “evenly spread projects in line with federal character.” Apart from civil society groups, one of the most virulent critics of constituency project is former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who was once quoted as saying: “You and I know what constituency projects mean. It is simply corruption.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/constituency-projects-n2tr-spent-since-2000-without-results-icpc.html

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue Sstate, at the weekend, appealed to the federal government to fulfil its pledge to resettle internally displaced persons (IDPs) living in various camps across the state. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo had said, in May last year when he visited the IDPs at Abagena camp along Makurdi-Lafia road in Benue state, that the sum of N10billion was approved by the National Executive Council (NEC) to rebuild destroyed areas in Benue and other states in the country. Ortom, who made the appeal when he received the President of Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Reverend Stephen Panya Baba, at the Government House in Makurdi, said the federal government needed to fulfil the promise. The governor said resources of Benue State had been overstretched in managing the IDP camps, adding that if the federal government redeemed its pledge, the funds would greatly assist the state in returning the affected persons to their ancestral homesHe further urged President Muhammadu Buhari to call for a National Dialogue Forum where Nigerians would frankly speak on issues affecting the country, particularly insecurity and proffer solutions. He recommended that security operatives should not ignore those beating drums of war as an interim measure to end the wave of threats and counter-threats from different sections of the country. Ortom however, condemned the latest order by the Fulani herders association, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, urging its members to defend themselves as he described the directive as capable of causing unimaginable violence. The governor wondered why the group would continuously make inflammatory statements but its officials are not invited for questioning even as he called for national prayers for peace in all parts of the country. He expressed hope that the current security challenges would soon be overcome. In his remarks, Rev. Panya Baba commended the governor for firmly standing with his people despite the security and political storm. He stressed that it was an indication that Ortom is a leader who truly loves his people. Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/ortom-begs-fg-to-fulfil-idps-resettlement-pledge.html

The Vice presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi has said he was ready to pursue the party’s mandate to its logical conclusion. Obi, who made the disclosure at the 8th stakeholders meeting of Anambra State chapter of PDP, titled “Repositioning for power and good governance” and held in Awka, said he was ready to lay down his life to ensure that Nigerians are delivered from hardship in the land. “I am ready to lay down my life to ensure that Nigerians are rescued from the hardship inflicted on them by President Muhammadu Buhari- led Government in the country. “I will fight for this mandate till the end. The person who is at helm of affair today ran for fourth time and nobody killed him. So, I am not afraid because when PDP was in power, it did not kill any body”, he said. Obi also said that PDP is a brand that every Nigerian wants to identify with because Nigerians have lost confidence in the ruling APC government. He said the only hope for Nigeria today is PDP, urging them never to lost hope in the party. Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/im-ready-to-lay-down-my-life-for-nigeria-peter-obi.html

The Ondo State governor, Rotimi Akeredolu and Senator Dino Melaye are not new to courting controversy—this time, it is about legalising marijuana (or cannabis). Both took a conference marking the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to chart their stance on whether Nigeria should legalise marijuana use. “There is no reason why Nigeria shouldn’t legalise marijuana,” said Akeredolu, in words presented by his special adviser, Boye Oyewumi. “Some African countries are already exporting medical cannabis worth billions of dollars.” Akeredolu had previously urged the federal government to consider legalising marijuana — citing its medicinal properties and market potential. “Ondo State is the largest producer of marijuana plants in Nigeria. We are not asking the government to set up bars where people come and abuse cannabis, rather we are asking the government to grant us license to cultivate medical marijuana for export.” Dr Williams Ebiti, a consultant at Milestone Rehabilitation Foundation, notes the medicinal benefits of marijuana but says staunch policy against it poses more harm. “Marijuana grows everywhere all over the country and the policy on drugs is even more harmful than the drugs itself,” he said. “Legalization of marijuana is not going to make it unavailable, but it’s going to make the Government have control over it, rather than put it in the hands of drug barons and cartel.” Senator Dino Melaye however, opposed moves to legalise marijuana, not minding its economic benefits. “There are other diverse areas that can generate revenue for the country, taking agriculture for an example,” he said in comments delivered by his personal assistant, Femi Obalemo. “The 10% of Nigerians consuming marijuana are endangering lives of the remaining 90% of the population,” he added. Up to 10.6 million Nigerians use cannabis — 9.3 million men and 1.3 million women- according to drug use statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics. The conference, by the Vanguard Against Drug Abuse, hosted a debate where participants insisted the country wasn’t mature enough to consider legalising marijuana. The federal agriculture ministry toes the same line. “Nigeria is not yet ready to move at this direction,” said Dele Olorunfemi, deputy director for extension and communication, representing the federal agriculture ministry at the conference. “We, Nigerians are good in breaking what seems unbreakable, the problem of legalizing marijuana at this time might cause it its regulations and enforcement. If we can get the enforcement right, then we can start thinking of legalizing.” https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/just-in-akeredolu-melaye-react-to-call-to-legalise-marijuana.html

“My husband was a kind and caring person, humble and generous.” Those were the words of Amina Aliyu, wife of late Aliyu Tijanni Abubakar, before she broke down in tears. They celebrated their second wedding anniversary in February, with a daughter who a little over a year old. Abubakar, 38, an indigene of Kaduna State, was killed in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan where he lived and worked in what appears to be a racist attack. He had attended and graduated from the International Alatoo University formerly known as Attaturk Alatoo University, a sister institution to Nile Turkish University, Abuja. He remained in Bishkek and founded an ‘English As A Second Language’ school called Cambridge English School, where he lectured students of all ages how to speak English. But he was reportedly attacked and killed by a Kyrgyz citizen on July 2, 2019 at the Bishkek city center. Abubakar had been in Kyrgyzstan for sixteen years. His sister, Nafisa Tijjani, said her brother went to Kyrgyzstan after secondary school, in 2003. “He did his university education there and graduated in 2007, but stayed back and established his school in 2009.” Abubakar, according to his younger brother, Abdurrahman who is also a student at the Alatoo University, was attacked following a taunting by a Kyrgyz local. The local followed him around, pointing, and taking pictures. At first, Abubakar ignored him, and crossed the street in an attempt to get away, but the man followed. An altercation ensued, with the local striking Abubakar at the head, making him unconscious. From the videos provided Daily Trust Saturday, some locals came to Abubakar’s aid and poured water on him to revive him, but to no avail. He was taken to the National Hospital in Bishkek but he died two days later. CCTV footage of his attack went viral on social media in Kyrgyzstan and this got the attention of the Kyrgyz Prime Minister’s office. The office immediately released a statement condemning the attack and offering to foot Abubakar’s medical expenses (Aliyu was still alive as at this time). The statement got the police into action as the murderer was arrested and jailed a day after Abubakar was hospitalized. He was buried according to Islamic rites on July 5, 2019 in Bishkek. On their last conversation, Amina said, “It was moments before he was murdered. We were on the phone, and he suddenly told me to hold on. I never heard from him again. All I got was the news of his death.” Aliyu’s family, including his widow, appealed to the Nigerian government for justice. Commending the Kyrgyzstan government, Nafisa Tijjani, a sibling of the deceased, said: “We highly commend the efforts of the Prime Minister of Kyrgyzstan. Immediately the story circulated, and the PM saw it, he gave instructions that the perpetrator be apprehended as soon as possible. Within hours, the criminal was caught, and put behind bars.” Meanwhile, a journalist based in Kyrgyzstan, Nurjamal Djanibekova in an article confirmed that the racial angle of the attack is being discounted by the police as they appear inclined to accept the alleged attacker’s testimony, in which he said he was speaking with friends via a live group chat and the late Abubakar mistakenly believed he was filming him without his permission. The suspect said Abubakar started insulting him, and later lashed out at him. The article stated that dark-skinned people living in Kyrgyzstan say they experience racial assaults regularly. .24 in one year, 6 countries From murder to executions, many Nigerians have been killed around the world in the past one year. Daily Trust Saturday takes a look at the disturbing trend. The recent deaths of two Nigerians in foreign lands have again triggered concerns in circumstances that might be xenophobic. In South Africa, Mrs. Elizabeth Ndubuisi-Chukwu, the deputy director-general of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria (CIIN) was found dead in her hotel room, while in Malaysia a PhD student, Thomas Orhionsefe Ewansiha, died in detention. Mrs. Ndubuisi-Chukwu died on June 13, 2019 at the Emperor Palace Hotel, Johannesburg, while attending a conference, and an autopsy released by the Director-General of South Africa’s Department of Health said she died of “unnatural causes consistent with strangulation.” In Malaysia, Thomas, the 34-year-old student of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology was arrested around Desa Aman Puri of Damansara on July 4, 2019 and died five days later in custody. Mrs. Ndubuisi-Chukwu’s death again brought to the fore incidents of some years ago, when many Africans, especially Nigerians, were attacked and their homes and businesses torched. In a reaction to the latest incident, Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, summoned the South African acting High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr. Bobby Moroe, and expressed concern that in recent past, 118 Nigerians were killed in unprovoked attacks, with 13 by South African police. He said Nigeria would no longer ignore such killings, and called on South African authorities to protect Nigerians. Also, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has come out to repeatedly decry the rate at which Nigerians are being killed abroad, for a myriad of reasons. Just on Tuesday, she paid a visit to the South African High Commission in Abuja with the brother of the late Mrs. Ndubuisi-Chukwu, Dr. Chidu Ndubuisi, to discuss with Mr. Moroe on thoroughly investigating the reasons surrounding her death and preventing the Nigeria/South Africa relationship from spiraling downwards. Mr. Moroe then revealed that the case had been upgraded to a high-level priority case, and his country will not allow anything to compromise the bilateral relations both nations enjoy. In the case of Thomas, the Director-General of the Malaysian Immigration Department, Datuk Khairul Daud, Ewanisha, claimed that he had a seizure while sleeping, after which he given special medical treatment before an ambulance arrived and was later pronounced dead. But a statement issued by the Nigerian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur stated that they had engaged the Malaysian immigration authorities on the death of the Nigerian and are awaiting the autopsy report. “Necessary steps are being taken towards with a view for redress and to prevent such occurrence in the future,” the commission added. Dabiri-Erewa also expressed her profound sadness over the passing of Thomas and urged the Nigerian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, to open an investigation. However, Thomas’ wife, Blessing, in a statement claimed that her husband was murdered in custody: “After my husband’s death, he was taken to a hospital where they carried out an autopsy. Both sides of his neck were cut down to his chest and lower abdomen. They tore the upper and lower parts of his body without our consent…It is suspicious and that is why we want to perform a fresh autopsy on him.” Also generating concern, is the murder of a lecturer in Kyrgyzstan, Aliyu Tijanni Abubakar, by a racist individual. It was learnt that there is no Nigerian mission in Kyrgyzstan, but the foreign ministry had reached out the embassy in Iran, with the case currently being handled by the officials there. The figures are alarming: Between December 2018 to date, 23 Nigerians were killed in five countries in questionable circumstances: Nwankwo Ilechukwu Mishak was stabbed in Ghana in December, 2018; Aliyu Tijanni Abubakar in Kyrgystan on July 2, 2019; nine Nigerians killed in a Libyan camp air strike this month; Ozumba Tochukwu Lawrence, shot in South Africa in July 2018; So also Okechukwu Chukwumeze on August 25, 2018 and Mr. Olushola Ayanleye on August 26, 2018. On April 6, 2019, Bonny Iwuola was stabbed in South Africa, and Gozien Christian also stabbed in South Africa in April; Tony Elochukwu, shot on April 24, 2019 in South Africa, while Samuel Nkennaya was mobbed on April 27, 2019. Ebuka Udugbo, killed by South African Police on April 28, 2019, the same with Maxwell Okoye on June 4, 2019. As the latest reports come in, more Nigerians at home are increasingly alarmed, even with the efforts of the Foreign Ministry. “President Muhammadu Buhari has instructed that the life of every Nigerian matters and is to be protected. We know that personally, you’ve done so much in this regard, communicating with our commission in South Africa. But on behalf of the government and the people of Nigeria, the family of the deceased, and for the sake of both countries, we demand justice,” Dabiri-Erewa had said to the South African High Commissioner. Whether that justice will be served, remains to be seen. – Data compiled by Haruna Ibrahim Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/nigerians-killed-around-the-world.html

President Muhammadu Buhari says media professionals and other stakeholders must correct and safeguard Journalism profession from the activities of fake news peddlers who are bent on destabilising the nation’s socio-political system. The president gave the challenge when he received the Chairman and members of the Board of Directors of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday. According to him, it is duty bound on the part of all media workers to fight against all vices threatening the profession to protect their reputation in the society. He said: “Journalism as a profession is primarily based on being truthful. With the growing increase in fake news the future of your profession is under threat. “Therefore, you must be ready to correct this and safeguard your professionalism and your reputation.’’ President Buhari, who observed that Information Technology is changing the world, however frowned at the use of technology to promote hatred and violence in the society. He also condemned the situation where images were being manipulated to give legitimacy to lies or airing voices on radio stations preaching falsehood and hatred. “Technology is an enabler for good. However in recent times we are seeing this platform more and more being used to instigate violent and hate. “Nowhere is this disturbing trend more apparent than in the various media platforms where fake news gaining momentum and is being used to divide and destabilize communities and indeed nations around the country. “We see images being manipulated to give legitimacy to lies. We hear voices on radio preaching falsehood and hatred. “Like I mentioned a few months ago at a world economic forum in Jordan – since digital information age is borderless this means we must be ready to respond with the best weapon we have – Truth,’’ he said. President Buhari, therefore, enjoined the board and management of the FRCN to develop strategies to counter fake news and misinformation in the society. He said: “In the case of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria you must proactively develop programmes based on truth, facts and broader national interests. “You should also have strategies to react to fake information and sensitise our citizens not to believe stories at face value especially when the source is unknown or not credible or where supporting facts are not available.’’ In his remarks, the chairman, FRCN board of the Directors, Malam Aliyu Hayatu, called for adequate funding of the corporation to enable it achieve its objectives. According to him, adequate budgetary allocation to the Corporation must be seen as addressing a security challenge which aims at bringing government closer to the people, with the aims of averting the high-jacking of the thoughts and consciousness of Nigerians by foreign radio broadcasts. “When this capability and associated requirements are satisfied, the FRCN should be in a position to record a much greater quantum of revenue than is the case presently “Mr President, funding FRCN should not be seen as a strictly business venture that is expected to provide immediate monetary return. “We at FRCN hope and indeed, strongly believe that the NEXT LEVEL agenda of the government of President Buhari, will include bequeathing to Nigeria a Federal Radio Network that will favourably compare with the best anywhere in the world. Mr President this is not an impossible task,’’ he added.(NAN) Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/fake-news-buhari-raises-alarm-says-journalism-under-threat.html |
About 40 percent of medical doctors in Nigeria are are unemployed, Chairman, Federal Capital Territory branch of the Nigeria Medical Association, Ekpe Phillips, has said. Ekpe, a gynaecologist at the Nyanyan General Hospital said this in Abuja yesterday at a roundtable discussion on accountability for maternal health in Nigeria organized by the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre, in Partnership with the National Human Rights Commission. He said: “Many of them are employed by private hospitals that are not even paying them enough because of the economy. We don’t have enough doctors and the ones we have are not being utilized. “The manpower issue is that government is not engaging the needed health personnel. We need to make the place conducive. As you build the primary healthcare centres, make accommodation available, electricity and make life conducive for the workers.” Executive Director, WARDC, Abiola Afolabi, said, maternal mortality could be successfully reduced “if we put women’s rights at the centre of the equation.” Read more: https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/40-of-doctors-unemployed-in-nigeria-nma.html |

Executive Secretary, Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme, Simeon Onyemaechi, says only five percent of Nigerians have access to the health insurance scheme. He said this in Awka yesterday at a presentation of the Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme. The Commissioner for Health, Vincent Okpala, said the nation’s health sector needed a drastic improvement to cater for the health needs of the citizenry. According to him, a situation where Nigeria occupies 187 out of 191 positions in the World Health Organization ranking is dangerous. Leader of the European Union to the state, Montserrat Pantaleoni, said the state needed an operational healthcare system to take healthcare to the next level. Soccer fans in Kaduna on Tuesday tasked Super Eagles to do everything possible to win their next match with South Africa and qualify for semi finals. The soccer fans, who spoke with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said the Super Eagles should approach the match with determination and play as a team. Isaiah Benjamin, Chairman, Sports Writers’ Association of Nigeria, Kaduna chapter, said although expectations were high, however, with a good play, the Eagles would be victorious. “South Africa is certainly not a team that can be taken for granted. The Super Eagles must put in more efforts to scale through to semi finals. “Indeed, the games are getting tougher, but with determination and team play, I see them emerging victorious,” Benjamin said. A Sports Analyst, Vincent Akinbami , expressed optimism that with team work, there would be a good outcome. “What was lacking in the team before was team work and team spirit, but so far, I will say they have been adjusting. “With the Egyptian fans behind us and the new spirit in the team, I see them scaling through. “Iwobi is beginning to know the responsibility bestowed upon him; the attackers too are building confidence. I see them beating South Africa and getting better with every match till the cup is won,” Akinbami said. Another Sports Analyst, Jide Bodunde, said the Super Eagles needed extra efforts to win the match. “On paper, you expect the Super Eagles to win, but football has gone beyond that. “Super Eagles had not defeated South Africa in the last five meetings. South Africa have had one win and finished the remaining four in draws. “I believe the Super Eagles will beat South Africa but it won’t come easy. A country that eliminated the host country (Egypt) and pre-tournament’s favourite in the presence of over 60,000 fans should be taken seriously. “They have players like Tacey Taw who loves scoring against Nigeria and Lorch who scored the goal against Egypt as their key men. They should therefore be closely watched,” he said. Bodunde expressed happiness with Odion Ighalo for rediscovering his scoring form which, he said, was good for the Super Eagles. According to him, Alex Iwobi is also one key player for the Super Eagles. “My biggest worry is our defence line. They were shaky against Cameroon, thereby exposing the goalkeeper, a situation that made him to concede two easy goals. “My prediction is 2-1 in favour of the Super Eagles,” the sport analyst said. A Football Fan, Abdulmalik Yusuf, said with determination, Super Eagles would win the match. “We are winning the match in spite of having a confused coach who, up till now, does not know his first 11. “The players should be determined and the outcome will be good,” he said. Yusuf said Nigerians were ready to support the team with prayers but appealed to the Federal Government to give them necessary encouragements to boost their morale. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Buratai, has said the only way the military and other security personnel can stay neutral in Nigeria’s electoral process would be in the use of electronic voting by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). He said this yesterday in Abuja at a post 2019 elections stakeholders’ round table organised by the Centre for Transparent Advocacy (CTA). Buratai who was represented by, Brig. Gen. John Ochai, said politicians exploits the abnormalities in the electoral system to perpetrate crimes, as it seems lucrative to them. According to him, security operatives usually deployed on election duties cannot afford to be aloof when their core responsibility revolves around ensuring law and order in any given situation. He said that one of the best ways to change the narratives would be in making electoral manipulation a futile activity. “We in the Army do our own post-mortem after every election and one of our findings is that one way of avoiding crimes on election days is in ensuring the futility of their actions. My opinion is that we should look at ways of using science and technology to make it futile to commit crimes, if you look at it closely, during elections, the usual targets are the INEC staff, their offices, result sheets but by the application of science and technology, it can be brought under control. “For instance, if thugs come and snatch result sheets with the aim of forging results, it will be futile for them because results would have been transmitted electronically to the appropriate quarter, which in this case is INEC server. “I would want to see a situation where election is done by voting with your phones. A time when Nigerians in diaspora vote from wherever they are, then there will be less opportunity for those who want to manipulate the process. On the day of election, you will see less of police on the streets and the military will remain in their barracks,” he said. But INEC’s National Commissioner, Haruna Mohammed differed with Ochai on e-voting solutions, saying that despite the obvious benefits of applying it, there was need for caution. According to him, Germany with all its technological advancement still does manual voting and that INEC was being wary of electronic processes because of the possibility of hacking into their systems. “INEC shares in this sense of technological solutions, for us its inevitable, but we need to be very careful, in elections we do not trust technology, technology has its own limitations, when we go there the nature of communication might change, this time they might hack into the site, the solution is in the attitude of Nigerians,” Haruna said. Earlier, the CTA Executive Director, Ms. Faith Nwadishi, said that the 2019 elections have come and gone, but critical stakeholders must continue to review, appraise the outcomes, learn from mistakes made and of course rejig the process ahead of the forthcoming elections and the 2023 elections which is about 1,199 days away. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), on Wednesday, said the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), whose senior Pastor, Biodun Fatoyinbo is enmeshed in a rape scandal, is not a member of any of the families that belong to CAN. The apex Christian association stated its stand in a statement titled “The position of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on the widespread allegations of rape against Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo of Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA),” that it was worried about recurrent allegations of rape and infidelity against some gospel ministers and other Christians. The position of the association, which was issued in a statement signed by the association’s National Director, Legal and Public Affairs, Barr. Kwamkur Samuel Vondip in Jos, particularly stressed that it was deeply concerned about the ongoing rape allegation saga arising from a confessional statement by a former female member of COZA, Mrs. Bisola Dakolo against Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo. “While efforts must be made to get to the root of the matter through thorough investigation, the association condemns totally, any act of infidelity either by a pastor or any member of the church of God. “Immoral relationships with anybody in the society are against the teachings of the Bible and the church and we urge all believers all over the country to run away from them because, as the Bible says and we strongly believe, adulterers and fornicators, God will judge (Heb. 13:4).” The statement urged security agencies and the judiciary to redouble their efforts in prosecuting the various cases of rape and other heinous crimes that are presently bedeviling the country without fear or prejudice. It further urged all ministers of the gospel to shun all appearances of evi,l especially unregulated closeness to persons in the church, adding that rape by every standard is sinful and an act of wickedness.
